WHEN: Thursday, January 21st from 7-9PM
WHERE: Jellyfish Gallery, 1286 Folsom Street, near Ninth
You must RSVP if you wish to attend to special-events@burningman.com

This event is a social mixer for artists who created work for Burning Man
last year and/or are planning art projects this coming year. Your creative
spirit gives so much to Black Rock City and the world, that we want to thank
you for your inventiveness and resourcefulness. It is also for Art
Department volunteers who assist artists on the playa with a dedication
and creative energy all their own. We hope this will be an opportunity to
meet one another and spark increased creative cross-pollination and
collaboration.

Please join the Burning Man staff, members of the Art Department and ARTery
volunteers, for a little reception for our yearly gathering in
appreciation of YOU.

At approximately 7:30pm there will be brief introductions and a short talk
about this years theme: "Metropolis".

To attend, please RSVP if you wish to attend to
special-events@burningman.com. It's an intimate space, and we need an exact number to plan for.

Thanks and hope to see you there!!!

PS. This is not the place to review Burning Man art grant proposals with Art
Staff, though staff will be on hand who can answer basic questions regarding
the process. Remember the deadline to submit art grant proposals for Burning
Man this year is February 1st. Everything you need to know is here:

Algae Lab Workshop
Sunday, January 31st, 11am-6pm

http://algaelab.org

Hello fellow algae-philes!

The last time we announced these workshops there was a lot of excitement -- but then we had to postpone. Finally, we are truly ON, and we have something special to share with you: the chance to become an algae farmer right away in your own home...

It's the Personal PhotoBioReactor! We have built the first one and are testing it out. In the next workshop series, I'll teach about algae and algae farming in general, then about my experiences growing particular species, including spirulina in my home. You can go home with everything you need to start growing live, fresh spirulina, harvesting it, and significantly supplement your diet with this superfood.

If you want to grow other species in your PPBRs, or if you have more room & want to grow on a larger scale for food or fuel, we'll support that as well. Everyone will be encouraged to share their experiences, advice, and questions on the ALGAELAB.ORG site.

For those who live far from the Bay Area, there will be How-To's and instructional materials so you can build your own...

The first workshop will be Sunday, January 31st, 11am-6pm, in Berkeley, CA. $150, or $250 to take home your own personal PBR. Hope to see you there!

For more info, visit http://algaelab.org. To sign up, email workshops@algaelab.org.

In green glory,
Dr. Aaron Baum

P.S. I am working at NASA these days, on a project extending the OMEGA concept:

DUST & ILLUSIONS, A Documentary. 30 YEARS OF BURNING MAN

Thursday, February 11th

After 9 months of sold out screenings through the states, and a success at San Francisco Documentary Film Festival, here is the 1st of a series of screenings in San Francisco & Bay Area. The Director, Olivier Bonin, will be in attendance for Q&A.

TICKETS: http://dustandillusions.com/blog/san-francisco-screening-feb-11th-2010

ABOUT THE FILM: From a group of friends organizing underground activities in San Francisco in the 70s, Burning Man has become the largest countercultural event in North America. But is it still counter-cultural? Has the larger world caught up with the event and slowly erased the original ideals?

Dust & Illusions, Olivier Bonin’s fascinating documentary takes a privileged glimpse at the history and future of Burning Man, one of the most important (if not the most important) counter-cultural movements of the last 3 decades.

Bonin provides a thoughtful and critical overview of the event’s transformation from a humble guerilla art project on San Francisco’s Baker Beach to a major corporation that funds artists, fosters a year-round virtual community, and builds Black Rock City in the middle of nowhere on a yearly basis. If you’ve never been to the playa, DUST & ILLUSIONS will give you an excellent idea of exactly what you’re missing, and veteran burners will see the direction the event is headed (for better or for worse). Don’t miss it.

Housing Needed for BM Regional Summit

Happy New Year, Bay Area Burning Man Friends!

We are pleased to announce that the Burning Man Project will be holding the Fourth Annual Regional Leadership Summit here in San Francisco. Each year, we invite Regional Contacts and other community leaders from across the world to the Bay Area to share ideas and connect with one another and with local Burners and staff. We are asking for your help. We are seeking hosts for our out-of-town Burner guests who will be in town Thursday, March 4th through Sunday, March 7th.

The Summit will be held in downtown San Francisco close to the BART. If you live in an area close to public transportation and can accommodate our guests, please let us know via summithousing@burningman.com. You can expect that some visitors will arrive as early as Wednesday evening, March 3rd (though MOST attendees will arrive in SF during the day on Thursday the 4th and on Friday morning the 5th) and you can expect your guests to leave either Sunday evening the 7th or Monday, March 8th in the morning.

We find that giving the Regional Contacts and other guests the opportunity to stay with a member of the community adds so much to their experience and makes them feel more welcome then they would if they were going home to a hotel or motel each night in between activities.

Though we're not sure exact numbers of attendees or their exact arrival dates and times yet, we wanted to put out a call to get a idea of how many visitors we'll be able to match up with local hosts during the Summit weekend.

Please email us at summithousing@burningman.com and let us know the nights you would be able to host visitors, how many guests you might be willing to put up, where you live, and your proximity to public transportation. This information will allow us to start moving forward with planning.

Once we've received official registrations, we'll ask for more specific details about your place---public transit options, pets, etc.

Many thanks,
The Burning Man Regionals Committee
