Wow. Just WOW. What a Burn that was!
Incredible art, incredible mutant vehicles, incredible people doing incredible things ... it just never stopped! And even with a record 51,454 people populating Black Rock City in 2010, it didn't feel crowded ... it felt ... cohesive.
You all really brought it this year, and it showed ... your passion, dedication, openness, unbridled creativity and community spirit made Black Rock City what it was: the most amazing, inspiring city on Earth. Seriously - and we don't take this lightly - BRC 2010 was truly one of the best years ever.
And now, today? We've (mostly) hustled ourselves home and back to our desks to debrief, de-dust, and whoa, what do you know, start thinking about - gulp - next year. But we're not ALL back at our desks yet ... and today we'd like to give a big shout out and heartfelt thanks to the hard-working crew of Department of Public Works who have been on playa since early August, and will stay on playa until October 9th for final restoration. Thank you DPW for making it all possible!
And thank YOU for doing your part to Leave No Trace (you did, right - including putting in your two hours of restoration somewhere besides your own camp? Yay, you!) and everything else you did that showed us you really take the Civic Responsibility/Participation principles (http://burningman.com/whatisburningman/about_burningman/principles.html pretty seriously. Well done, BRC.
As we kick off Volume 15 of the JRS, we look forward to another year of keeping you informed about year-round Burning Man community, culture, news, opportunities to participate, and important event information -- with a little fun thrown in for good measure.
And we'd like your help with telling the story of what we are, all year! If you'd like to share with our readers what YOU'RE doing to bring Burning Man principles into your community year-round -- in ways large or small -- we'd love to hear it! Send an email to jackrabbitspeaks@burningman.com, and put POST REQUEST in the subject line so it doesn't get lost in the shuffle.
Finally, it was wonderful meeting all of you fine folks out there this year. It's great to see who's on the other end of the "Send" button. Thanks, and remember, the Man burns in 345 days!

POST-PLAYA TIPS
You're back in the real world. You're staring blankly at the wall. Then you glance furtively at the pile of playafied camping gear, wigs, and tutus crammed in the corner of your room. Then you stare at the wall some more. Until the vision of your playa dust-encrusted car crosses your mind. You wince.
"Where do I start?" you wonder.
It's OK. We've assembled a collection of helpful post-playa tips to help you clean your stuff, your car, yourself, even your brain. We've even got some tips about getting yourself ready for next year. Yep, this is us, loving you.
http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/postplaya.html
This page is linked from there, but we think it's probably one of the more important points: one great cure for post-playa blues is to connect with other Burners. Here's how:
http://burningman.com/blackrockcity_yearround/connectwithburners.html
**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**
FEEDBACK LOOP: TELL US WHAT YOU THINK!
It's time to debrief from Burning Man 2010, and we want your feedback about your Burning Man experience to factor into our planning for 2011!
The staff reads every word that gets sent in, and your feedback becomes a part of our annual staff retreat process.
Note: we do respond to some feedback emails with personal responses, but even though we do read them all, we don't respond to every message personally. Those subjects that generate a lot of public comment are addressed in the Q&A section of the annual Afterburn Report. Detailed info here:
http://www.burningman.com/blackrockcity_yearround/feedback.html
While we're always open to your feedback, we'll be closing up the formal Feedback Loop process around the beginning of October to head into our debrief meetings, so please act fast. Stand up and be heard!
**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**
LAW ENFORCEMENT FEEDBACK
Did you have or witness an encounter with law enforcement on the playa? Whether it was positive or negative, we want to know about it. We use this information to work year round with law enforcement officers to improve our relations, improve their interactions with our community, and to ensure your constitutional and civil rights are being protected while in Black Rock City. And we can't be successful in that effort if we don't have your stories.
So please, take a moment to download, fill out and mail us a Law Enforcement Feedback Form (PDF), here:
http://www.burningman.com/on_the_playa/le_feedback.html
**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**
LAWYERS FOR BURNERS
If you got arrested or received a citation on playa, don't feel like you're in it alone. A grassroots, volunteer organization called Lawyers For Burners may be able to help you out with finding a lawyer and/or legal advice. Visit their website for more information:
http://www.lawyersforburners.com
Tip: to contact LFB, fill out their Feedback Form (linked from the left hand column), and they'll be in touch.
**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**
LOST AND FOUND
Did you lose something on playa and want it back? Find something, and want to return it to its rightful owner? Don't despair - hundreds of happy Burner-and-stuff reunions have been successfully achieved post-event, so check here before you call your beloved possession gone for good:

SATELLITE PICTURE OF BLACK ROCK CITY 2010
The GeoEye-1 satellite flew over Black Rock City, and took a picture of our fair metropolis during the event on Thursday at 11:41am. It's quite a sight.
Here's the shot they took, a high-resolution version of which you can download and play with:
http://twitpic.com/2p2bpz
This page will teach you how to fly over it in Google Earth:
http://bit.ly/ch8qRy
Now, for you satellite nerds, just know that "GeoEye-1 has the highest resolution of any commercial imaging system and can collect images with a ground resolution of 0.41-meters or 16 inches in the panchromatic or black and white mode. It collects multispectral or color imagery at 1.65-meter resolution or about 64 inches, a factor of two better than existing commercial satellites with four-band multispectral imaging capabilities. While the satellite collects imagery at 0.41-meters, GeoEye's operating license from the U.S. Government requires re-sampling the imagery to 0.5-meter for all customers not explicitly granted a waiver by the U.S. Government."
We're sure that all means something very important. For more information, if that just wasn't enough for you, visit:
http://launch.geoeye.com/LaunchSite/about/

2011 ART THEME: RITES OF PASSAGE
As soon as the Man burned, we published the art theme for 2011: Rites of Passage. Here's the short version:
"There are moments of crisis and frisson in our lives which inform us that we've somehow crossed an inner threshold and are changed. Thus moving from one state of being into an unknown other is not a facile transformation; it obliges us to face our innermost insecurities, and it requires faith, a willingness to leap off the ladder of ordered existence. Our theme this year invites participants to join with others in creating rites of passage."

BRC WEEKLY -- BLACK ROCK CITY'S INDEPENDENT NEWSWEEKLY -- POSTED ONLINE!
The inimitable Adrian Roberts writes:
"This year's debut issue of the BRC WEEKLY -- also known as the newspaper formerly known as "PISS CLEAR" -- has been posted online as a PDF, for your off-playa reading pleasure. Check it out here:
http://brcweekly.com
The "Piss Clear" team returned to the world of playa publishing this year for the first time since 2007 with a brand-new newsweekly, jam-packed with articles, rants, lists, and tons of interesting Black Rock City-releated content.
For those still pining for those old issues of "Piss Clear," you'll be happy to know they've all been compiled into book called "Burning Man Live," available directly from editor Adrian Roberts at: http://pissclear.org "

SURVEY: SEEKING INPUT ABOUT YEAR-ROUND STORAGE FOR BURNERS IN NV
Burning Man is currently looking at ways to help our participants, artists, art cars and theme camps with storage in and around Gerlach, NV. We would like to promote cooperation amongst participants to share storage, minimize fuel consumption caused by repeat shipping each year, and improve safety on the highways by reducing the amount of hauling. This short survey will help us better understand the community’s storage needs.

Thank you for participating in our survey.

HARVEYWOOD SIGN FOLLIES
Steven Clark writes:
"Please post a blurb about the fun we had with the HARVEYWOOD sign on the playa this year 2010.
A link to the story about how the sign was pranked and photos of all the variations is located here:
http://www.salamandersociety.com/harveywood/
The whole affair ended up in great fun and hilarity. As the artist I grew to appreciate how fluid and liquid the art flows out on the playa.

LESSER-KNOWN BURNING MAN 2010 COVERAGE
As usually happens, we've seen a good amount of press about this year's Burn, and we thought we'd pitch you some of the ones you might not see in the mainstream.
Here's an excellent description and beautiful photos of Burning Man from first-timer Pedro Sagüés. http://bit.ly/bLqaCi
This is an interesting perspective about Burning Man as a reputation economy, from The Walrus Magazine, out of Canada. http://bit.ly/9OFeMA
And here's a nice write-up and pictures from Flavorwire. http://bit.ly/9uomeB
We're also inordinately fond of this "Fool's Attempt to Describe Burning Man" by newcomer Robin Esrock: http://bit.ly/aNSlEV

BURNER OUT OF WATER: A SOCIAL EXPERIMENT
Bethany Epiphany writes:
"Burner Out of Water: What started as a social experiment for those not able to attend Burning Man has evolved into a place for sharing how we keep connected to the feelings of Black Rock City all year long.
A very wise person, mid-Burn week on BMIR asked "why are we always compressing and decompressing? Can't we just stay compressed?" Well...?
Check out http://burneroutofwater.weebly.com to see what fellow Burners did when not residing in Black Rock City and be inspired to live as outrageously as you did during Burn week all year long. Share your ideas, stories and photos at burneroutofwater@hotmail.com to motivate fellow Burners. How can we bring the art, camaraderie and spirit of the playa into our everyday lives all year long?"

SAFER SEX AT BURNING MAN
Julia writes:
"Did you just get back from the playa? If so, let's talk about sex!
Please take 5 minutes to fill out this survey and then forward widely to friends. Some of the questions are personal, but the survey is completely anonymous, and your honest answers could help make Burning Man a safer and healthier place to get it on.

SUPPORT A PROJECT 2010 SUMMARY
One of the reasons you saw so much incredible artwork on playa in 2010 was that YOU, our community, stepped up and donated $109,176 to support a wide variety of projects this year. You can see how it all panned out on our Support a Project page:
http://www.burningman.com/participate/supportaproject/
Of course, that's a mere fraction of the total amount donated through other sources, ways and means, so THANK YOU!!

SAN DIEGO DECOMPRESSION - SAN DIEGO, CA - OCT 15-17
San Decompression 2010 - YOUtopia
http://sddecom.com/
San Diego Decompression is the San Diego Burning Man Community's post-Burning Man Decompression event where we celebrate the vibrant creative and communal elements of San Diego and the surrounding areas.
San Diego Decompression is a 3 day/2 night camping event that will take place on the La Jolla Indian Reservation Campgrounds. There will be no glass containers of any kind allowed on-site, and no vending, with the exception of firewood and ice.
The theme for this year is YOUtopia.
YOUtopia is a fantastic place, a place of your dreams. It is perfection and balance, Challenge and growth.
YOUtopia is your place, the place that you make. YOUtopia is your perfect world. The best of every thing. The best of anything.
YOUtopia is your creation and your art. YOUtopia is YOU. YOUtopia is Love and inspiration. Growth into the ideal you. It is Imagination. The place where the dark you is accepted, and the best of you is nurtured.
YOUtopia is usually fun, sometimes a little scary, but always full of acceptance for who you are. In YOUtopia your fear and love and anger and hope are reflected in your art and your being.
YOUtopia teaches. YOUtopia is your community It is the place that you build. YOUtopia is safe. The home that you love. The family that you join and all that you are. You are your YOUtopia.
We invite you to show us your idea of YOUtopia – is it a future wonderland of machines that serve your every whim, or a fantasy land of elves and dwarves? Would you rather create something you want to see in your every day life or that ridiculous sculpture you have always had at the back of your mind? Maybe you will explore the dark side of dystopias such as 1984 or post apocalyptic horrors, or even the rebirth of civilization, a little bit wiser than the first time around?
