Emergency Protests Against Planned Troop Escalation
Tue Jan 9 2007 (Updated 01/10/07) Protests Planned For Bush's Troop Surge In Iraq
George Bush is expected to give a major policy address on Wednesday, January 10, to outline his new strategy for Iraq; it is increasingly clear that he is likely to announce that he will be sending more troops.
On Thursday January 11th anti-war protests are planned across the country. In Palo Alto, community members will gather at El Camino Real and Embarcadero Road, to protest against "this amplification of an outrageous and illegal failed war that has already resulted in the deaths of over three thousand U.S. troops as well as hundreds of thousands of Iraqis". In San Francisco, there will be an anti-war march starting at 6pm at the Montgomery Bart Station. Many other anti-war events
http://indybay.org/newsitems/2007/01/09/18345330.php
are planned around the Bay Area, including protests in Oakland, Berkeley, Alameda, El Cerrito, Mountain View and Benicia.

With the dawning of a New Year, the Urban Alliance for Sustainability (UAS) will be reaching new heights and a broader audience. As of January 2007, the UAS Green Movie Night will move from the lovely SOMA Creativity Center
http://www.somacreativitycenter.org to the larger accommodations of the Little Roxie
http://www.roxie.com
Through an exciting collaboration with New College, UAS will be hosting a mix of insightful films, documentaries and commentaries on the second Thursday of each month, from 6 to 9:00pm. Local organizations working on the UAS sustainability theme of the month will be featured and the movie will be followed by an engaging, solutions-oriented discussion with the audience. What's more, the conversation will continue into the night a few doors down at ELIXIR, who are graciously offering green movie night attendees $1 off any organic beer, wine or mixed drink with ticket stub http://www.elixirsf.com
UAS thanks SOMA Creativity Center for a wonderful 2006 Green Movie Night series filled with inspiration, stimulation and community. ABOUT THE FILM
Kilowatt Ours Reveals the Consequences of Our Coal Powered Economy.
The film opens with Vice President Dick Cheney's energy policy speech in which Cheney makes the claim that America needs nearly 1900 new power plants in the next 20 years to meet projected electricity demands.
From here, filmmaker Jeff Barrie takes viewers on a journey from the coal mines of West Virginia to the solar panel fields of Florida, as he discovers solutions to America's energy related problems.

Human Be-In 40th - Sunday January 14, 2007
Hello Friends,
Just a thought here: were we revved up for a January Digital Be-In, I suppose we would be doing it this Saturday in conjunction with Sunday's 40th Anniversary of the Human Be-In.
The first true public Digital Be-In was #4, held on January 14, 1992, which was the exact date of the 25th Anniversary of the Human Be-In, and this was the event that literally took on the legacy of the Human Be-In, at least as far as it related to the digital media revolution. Timothy Leary, Allen Cohen and Chet Helms, key conspirers of the Human Be-In, were all involved with our cyberculture event from that point on.
Originally held in January in conjunction with Macworld Exposition, last year the 14th Digital Be-In was held for the first time on Earth Day, April 22, 2006, with the theme Planet Code (see
http://www.be-in.com We are tentatively scheduled for Earth Day again this year.
But there is no major event planned this weekend to commemorate the potent “Gathering of the Tribes” that seems in retrospect to have been a “trimtab” shift in personal/social consciousness that led to major shifts of all kinds through the unfolding Summer of Love across the planet. There is a small event happening Tuesday in (a Q&A with SF Chronicle music reviewer Joel Selvin; see below), which I plan to attend and offer some video footage of the Human Be-In (as part of a 10th Anniversary DVD of 1997’s Digital Be-In 9).
Maybe we should all just show up at the Polo Fields Sunday at Golden Gate Park? And/or Ocean Beach... After all, its been 40 years and the Be-In vibe and ideas live on in our distributed network of events like the Digital Be-In, Burning Man, Earthdance, etc. The Human Be-In was on a Sunday too. Pretty cool.
Perhaps something will emerge....
In any event, 2007 promises to be quite magical indeed!
Happy New Light Goz PS -
Here’s a reasonable overview of the Human Be-In on WIKIpedia:

The Gathering of the Tribes and Summer of Love Be-In
Tuesday, January 9, 2007
With Joel Selvin, San Francisco Chronicle Senior Pop Music Critic
Kanbar Hall
Jewish Community Center of San Francisco
3200 California Street at Presidio Avenue
Dig out the tie-dyed tee-shirts from the back of your closet, put some flowers in your hair and join us for Joel Selvin’s insights on The Gathering of the Tribes and Summer of Love Be-In.
Joel Selvin has been providing his San Francisco Chronicle readers with fascinating accounts of the Bay Area music scene for the past 30 years. Who better to tell us of the heady flower power days of the Haight-Ashbury when San Francisco was the center of the Beat Generation?
On January 14, 1967, 20,000 youngsters of all ages made a pilgrimage to Golden Gate Park for the Gathering of the Tribes for the Human Be-in. It was a seminal event that presaged The Summer of Love. What was this event? Why did it happen? Why was it impor tant? And what was its role in creating the era we call the Sixties?
To answer these questions, Joel Selvin will be our host for a special night of conversation and reminiscence over the figures that shaped the culture, music and events of 1960s San Francisco. Joel is the author of Summer of Love and has covered pop music for The Chronicle since 1970.
Please join us for a reception at 7:00 PM.

ART LOUNGE 2007: Calling artists, scientists and environmentalists!
Join us for a reception at Burning Man HQ Friday, Jan 26 5-8pm,

ART LOUNGE 2007: Calling artists, scientists and environmentalists!
Join us for a reception at Burning Man HQ Friday, January 26th from 5-8pm
1900 3rd St, 2nd Floor (between 16th and Mariposa) San Francisco.
Purpose: To bring artists, scientists and eco-heros of various shapes and
sizes together in a social atmosphere with the Burning Man staff, to
honor their
contributions and inspire cross pollination in the year ahead as we
figure out exactly
what "Green Man" means to us!
Taking "green" into consideration means thinking about the effect each of
your decisions has on the environment and choosing the least harmful/most
beneficial option possible. Specific things to take into consideration
include materials being used, energy consumed, and waste produced. We
aren't
saying let's NOT burn art and we don't wish to dillute the intensity of the
creative expression at Burning Man. But we do want to inspire a sense of
ownership of the entire creative process from creation to destruction and
back in ways that inspire social change on and off the playa and
potentially
lead the way to new forms and concepts of art making.
Are you wondering how to power your art installation using alternative
energy?
Do you have knowledge of a new or green technology that might be of
interest
to artists?
Please join Burning Man staff and volunteers for a wine and cheese
reception
honoring artists, scientists, and members of our newly formed "Greening The
Burn Group" and let's see what conversations spark in the year ahead!
Members of the Art Dept and other Burning Man staff will also be on hand to
discuss the overall art process with you and see what's on your mind!
Please RSVP to special-events@burningman.com if you will attend.
Hope to see many of you there!
