DREAMS (Ahlaam) Iraq – film
Rafael Theatre
This impressive debut from writer-director Mohamed Al-Daradji is the first dramatic feature filmed in Iraq after Saddam Hussein’s fall. Set in and around a Baghdad mental asylum destroyed by American bombing, it vividly focuses on three people trying to piece their lives back together in the maze of a nightmarish urban landscape. As critical of the old regime as well as the snipers and the occupation, this visually potent film was made under astonishing conditions that mirrored the plight of the characters: During production, crew members were abducted by both insurgents and American forces. In Arabic with English subtitles. (Iraq/UK/Netherlands 2005) 110 min.
Thurs., January 25, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

“Occupation: Dreamland” In January, 2004, in Al-Falluja, Iraq, a documentary film crew follows an infantry squad of the 82nd Airborne, US Army. Cameras accompany the squad of seven on day and night patrols, as they watch their backs, kick down doors, search for weapons, interrogate women, detain a few people, and listen to the complaints of locals. At their barracks, a former Baathist retreat called Dreamland, the men talk: about why they enlisted, civilian prospects, feelings about the war and Iraqis, where they were when a comrade died a few weeks before. We see them wait for translators and try a few words of Arabic; we hear their frustrations. We watch them pressured to reenlist. Tensions mount in Falluja.
“Star Wars In Iraq” is a new investigative report by Maurizio Torrealta and Sigfrido Ranucci. Is the U.S. using new experimental "Tactical High Energy Laser" weapons in Iraq? According to official Pentagon sources, military vehicles equipped with this laser device have been used in Afghanistan to explode mines. According to two reliable military information sites – Defense Tech and Defense Industry Daily - at least three such vehicles are being used in Iraq as well and some people report having seen them.
