"What About W."
and
"New Rulers of the World" A documentary film by John Pilger. 'Global economy' is a modern Orwellian term. On the surface, it is instant financial trading, mobile phones, McDonald's, Starbucks, holidays booked on the net. Beneath this gloss, it is the globalisation of poverty, a world where most human beings never make a phone call and live on less than two dollars a day, where 6,000 children die every day from diarrhea because most have no access to clean water.

THE COMING WEEKS IN MARIN
AND BEYOND

MITF Presents -
Mexico: Intensified Repression Spurs Solidarity
Oaxaca and Chiapas Report Back
Direct from the fronts in Oaxaca and Chiapas, Mexico, Bay Area human rights activist and Marin Interfaith Task Force board member, Carolina Dutton will report on the increased number of kidnappings, disappearances, and beatings of APPO (Popular Assembly of the People of Oaxaca) members and the New Year's solidarity conference with the Zapatistas and the people of the world in Chiapas. She will discuss the impact of these events on the economic and political conditions in Mexico.
The presentation will include recent video footage and slides documenting the four-day Zapatista encuentro. In attendance were over 2000 supporters representing 48 countries from Europe and Oceania as well as from the Americas. Carolina will also provide documentation and discuss testimonies of individuals who were recently tortured by Mexican "security" forces in Oaxaca. People were illegally detained, beaten, and sometimes killed while peacefully protesting their loss of land, forced displacement, low wages and their extreme poverty.
The program will be presented on Friday, February 2, 7:00 PM at The First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael. This event is sponsored by Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas. A $5-10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Wheelchair accessible. The 8000 UN troops are a proxy force for the US, French and Canadian soldiers who overthrew Haiti's government in a 2004 coup. *** STOP UN 'Peacekeeper' Massacres in Haiti
*** Free All Political Prisoners
*** End Foreign Military Occupation of Haiti
*** Respect Haiti’s Sovereignty – Return President Aristide
The foreign military occupation of Haiti continues. The 8000 UN troops are a proxy force for the US, French and Canadian soldiers who overthrew Haiti's government in a 2004 coup. UN troops and police-controlled death squads routinely assault communities that support the Lavalas grassroots democracy movement. They are responsible for killings, sexual abuse, beatings, house burnings, arbitrary arrests, and prolonged, illegal detention of people without any charges.
The grassroots movement in Haiti has called for coordinated international protests on February 7, to raise the demand: All foreign occupation forces must leave Haiti now!
Let us act now in solidarity with our Haitian sisters and brothers, whose unbreakable spirit, in the face of severe repression, won’t stop.

Fri., February 16, at 7:30 PM
Nicaragua and the IMF:
What are the socio-economic issues facing Daniel Ortega?
Through oral and visual presentations, Bay Area human rights activists will illustrate findings from their trip to Nicaragua in November. The delegation was sponsored by Jubilee USA and Witness for Peace, two groups dedicated to fighting poverty and injustice in Latin America and the Caribbean. Delegates met with non-governmental organizations, heard from community representatives, and saw first hand what IMF policies actually mean for the people of Nicaragua.
Learn about the effects of the International Monetary Fund’s structural adjustment programs on Nicaragua's efforts to overcome poverty and what influence Daniel Ortega's return to the presidency could have on these issues in the coming months.
The program will be held on Friday, February 16, at 7:30 PM at the First United Methodist Church, 9 Ross Valley Drive (at Fourth Street), San Rafael. It is sponsored by Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas, Bay Area Debt Cancellation Coalition, and Nicaragua Center for Community Action. A $5-10 donation is requested.
