cell phone findings: industry vs non-industry studies

Studies of health risks of cell phone use that are funded exclusively by
industry are substantially less likely to report statistically significant
effects. Compared to studies funded by public agencies or charities,
industry funded studies find adverse effects approximately 1/10th as
frequently. This pattern is consistent with research funded by the tobacco
and chemical industries.

HOW TO disable your new, RFID-laden US passport

Smash the crap out of it with a hammer. No, seriously. Snip from
Wired Magazine tutorial:
All passports issued by the US State Department after January 1 will
have always-on radio frequency identification chips, making it easy
for officials – and hackers – to grab your personal stats. Getting
paranoid about strangers slurping up your identity? Here’s what you
can do about it. But be careful – tampering with a passport is
punishable by 25 years in prison. Not to mention the “special”
customs search, with rubber glove

May also be possible to stick it in the microwave to fry the RFID?

i have one. the RFID is in a strip along the center seam of the back cover.
if you bend the crap out of it, pulling the cover back and really bending the strip,
it should kill the chip. from "normal" wear and tear....

Don't forget the only successful coupe to overthrow the govt was hatched
in the FBI HQ. Deep Throat, the guy who orchestrated the plan and gave
Woodard all that info to bring down Nixon was a disgruntled Lt Director
of the FBI who was getting even for being passed over as J Edgar
Hoover's replacement when Nixon chose Webster. They can't be trusted.
Rich Martin

Rich,

Spoken like a republican still bitter about Nixon's ouster.

In fact "deep throat" was motivated by his concerns about the direction and underhandedness Nixon got his well earned shabby reputation for.

Woodward is an intelligence asset and Watergate was a "limited hangout" sort of expulsion.

Kennedy's murder was a real coup, and there have been others, and multiple attempts, Reagan's shooting, multiple attempts on Ford, etc. in modern days.

Bush Sr. and Rockefeller sure wanted to be president, didn't want to wait for a little formality like an election when there were more direct methods.

So, some people say.

As improbable as it may be, I am still wanting to realize an image/vision I had of friends & strangers (in white) encircling Lake Merritt on a full moon with floating (white) candles across night waters. Only later I realized molten wax is likely an ecological hazard. But despite the holding of candles compromise, the vision remains vivid.

Our next full moon is 1/3 6:58 pm.

Clinton Fein: Torture

Clinton Fein's latest exhibition, Torture, is a shocking and defiant exploration of America's approach to torture under the Bush administration.

A series of staged and digitally manipulated photographic images recreate infamous torture scenes from Abu Ghraib prison in Iraq, transforming diffuse, muted and low-resolution images into large-scale, vivid, powerful and frightening reproductions.

Fein focuses on the choreography and sexualization of torture, which includes images of prisoners, stripped naked, wearing hoods or sandbags as they're forced to stand in excruciatingly uncomfortable positions, simulate sexually degrading acts, and are subject to egregious humiliation. The horrifying images, stylized with fashion-photography lighting, radiate a profound beauty and eroticism that is all at once seductive, disturbing and unsettling.

This engaging evening offers basic Authentic Communication tools that
help participants deeply transform their lives, and help them discover

The Art of Authentic Communication

Communication impacts every relationship in our lives: our work
relationships, our friendships, our intimate relationships, and our
relationship with ourselves. By understanding the art of authentic
communication, we can learn to shift from disconnection and conflict,
to greater understanding, collaboration, and fulfillment. Through this
understanding we can find the thriving lives and relationships we are
hungering for, and be the change we wish to see in the world.

- Matthew Blom and Karl Steyaert
Instructors of The Art of Authentic Communication

Here's just a portion of what you'll learn:

• Four powerful steps to communicating more effectively at home, work,
or school

• One word that makes life miserable for everyone

• How to free yourself from taking things personally

• How to bring compassion and peace to your daily interactions while
simultaneously getting more of what you want

According to Einstein, "No problem can be solved from the same level
of consciousness that created it." The information in this course
offers key insights into a new level of consciousness, one which
thousands of people have found extremely powerful.

IMPEACH or secede
Helicopter Photo 11am
I'm SO there - hopefully it won't be pouring rain! Hope to see you there, too! I believe impeachment is one of the most critical components of the Constitution, meant to steer us clear of self-serving despots who think they are above the law and who are doing the opposite of serving the people. It's not partisan, or frivolous and it's not too late to protect our democracy, our safety and future generations!
Rant over, thanks. Peace.

IMPEACHMENT FLASHMOB (1,200 people plus helicopter)
Sat, Jan 6, Ocean Beach, San Francisco, 10:30 a.m.

On Saturday, January 6, 2007 (just two days after the new US Congress convenes), 1,200 people will gather for a (Park Service-permitted) impeachment event in Nancy Pelosi’s back yard -- on Ocean Beach in San Francisco.

Early that morning, in 100-foot letters stretching 450 feet across the sand, volunteers from the Beach Impeach Project will outline the message:
I M P E A C H !
At 10:30 a.m., the 1,200 attendees will arrive and lay their bodies down inside the message’s lettering. At 11 o’clock a helicopter will arrive overhead and photographers will record the 1,200 bodies in the sand -- “IMPEACH!” -- with the San Francisco skyline and the Golden Gate Bridge in the background.

News editors will have compelling photos for the next morning’s Sunday papers; the nation and world will have convincing evidence of how badly the American people (even Ms. Pelosi’s own constituency) want their leaders held accountable for the Iraq disaster; and the impeachment movement will have powerful visuals to go with the words and chatter swirling in the air for months and months now.

To participate, please take 60 seconds to register yourself and your friends. If 1,200 people register in advance, this will be not just a frolic at the beach, but a NEWS story (the media are already interested). Also, I can communicate via just one email with all who are registered, instead of 1,200 emails.

Please take 60 seconds to register:
-- go to http://www.volunteerforchange.org
-- hit "View the event calendar"
-- go down to "Saturday 1/6/07 -- Beach Impeach Project" (we're that day's only event)
-- follow the signup directions (takes about 60 seconds)

Danger Ranger's 16th Annual Post Yule Pyre

Saturday, January 6, 2007 7:00 PM
Carousel Diner 2750 Sloat Blvd @ Great Highway/ Ocean Beach SF, CA

An annual San Francisco tradition occurs at this time of the year, when the last stand of sidewalk fir trees is logged by the Friends of the Rootless Forest and then piled up on the beach for some very rapid composting. Saturday, January 6th. Meet at the Carousel Diner, 2750 Sloat Blvd at 7:00 PM. (Look for the giant Doghead in the middle of the street.) We'll hang out for half an hour and then head west when the coast is clear. Bring a christmas tree and libations. No glass containers on the beach, you assume the risk, no one is in charge, your mileage may very. And remember; "When fire is outlawed, only outlaws will have fire."
