6.30 pm Thursday, Oct. 11 Our Daily Bread + We Feed the World
Screening at the Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street in Berkeley
Welcome to the world of industrial food production and high-tech farming! To the rhythm of conveyor belts and immense machines, the film looks without commenting into the places where food is produced in Europe: monumental spaces, surreal landscapes and bizarre sounds – a cool, industrial environment which leaves little space for individualism. People, animals, crops and machines play a supporting role in the logistics of this system which provides our society’s standard of living.
Our Daily Bread is a wide-screen tableau of a feast which isn’t always easy to digest – and in which we all take part. A pure, meticulous and high-end film experience that enables the audience to form their own ideas.
We Feed the World is a film about food and globalization, fishermen and farmers, long-distance lorry drivers and high-powered corporate executives, the flow of goods and cash flow–a film about scarcity amid plenty. With its unforgettable images, the film provides insight into the production of our food and answers the question of what world hunger has to do with us.
With San Fransico area breadbakers: Steve Sullivan (founder Acme Breads); Julie Cummins (CUESA); Phoenix Pastaficio; and Eduardo Morell (Morell’s bread)

October 11: Juvies
This documentary explores the juvenile criminal-justice system, and the increasingly controversial practice of sending youth offenders through the adult system. Focusing on a group of twelve young offenders chosen randomly to participate in a video-production workshop at Eastlake Central Juvenile Hall in Los Angeles (where they await trials as adults), the film compares their crimes and sentences, explores their feelings about the experience of juvenile hall vs. adult prison, and examines the media's role in affecting public
opinion about youth offenders and how they should be handled. (2004)

Eye Gazing Party - West Coast Debut Tuesday, October 16, 7:00 PM
The Tantric Temple (Potrero Hill, SF)
For single women and men in their 20s and 30s $10
http://www.eyegazingparties.com
"New York's hottest dating trend" --Elle Magazine
Michael Ellsberg and Destin Gerek invite you to the West Coast debut
of Eye Gazing Parties. These parties have been happening all over the
world, and now they are coming to San Francisco!
The eyes are the window into the soul, so it's a lot easier to have a mesmerizing conversation with someone new after you've spent two minutes looking into his or her eyes. That is the simple idea behind Eye Gazing Parties. Banal chit-chat about employment status, the location of your apartment, or where you're from is not a great way
to spark a captivating connection with an alluring new person. Eye contact is.
Here's how it works: An even number of singles meet in an attractive space over drinks and world beats. After a fun mini-lesson in the art of eye contact, the group splits into pairs, and each pair spends two minutes looking into each other's eyes, no talking, with inviting beats in the background. The pairs switch up every two minutes, for a total of around half an hour. Then there is a party afterwards, with drinks flowing and luscious beats vibing. The eye gazing has an electrifying effect on the party; simply put, two minutes of eye contact is the Cadillac of ice-breakers. Come try out the exciting new way to meet single souls!
Eye Gazing Parties were founded by Michael Ellsberg in NYC in 2005, and have been covered by the New York Times, CNN, Good Morning America, and major media around the world. People who attend them report having profound experiences with many new and exciting people at each event.
The party is co-hosted by Destin Gerek ( http://www.EroticRockstar.com )
and is held in the stunning Tantric Temple ( http://www.tantrictemple.org ),
founded and run by the incomparable Bast ( http://www.undercoverpriestess.com ), who will also be there.
If you would like to attend, please RSVP to Michael at press2007@eyegazingparties.com (no need to follow the invite instructions on the Eye Gazing Parties website). He will send you the address. Please only RSVP if you are set on attending, as the success of these parties depends on maintaining an even balance between men and women, and cancellations or no-shows throw this balance off.
Feel free to invite your friends--have them RSVP directly to Michael (press2007@eyegazingparties.com)
and have them mention your name. Thank you! Michael and Destin

6.30 pm Tuesday, Oct. 18 Fed Up, Fowl + Pollen Nation + Islands at Risk (four short films) UCBerkely
Using hilarious and disturbing archival footage and featuring interviews with farmers, scientists, government officials, and activists Fed Up! presents an entertaining and informative overview of our current food production system from the Green Revolution to the Biotech Revolution and what we can do about it. Fed Up! explores the unintentional effects of pesticides, the resistance of biotechnology companies to food labeling, and the links between government officials and major biotechnology and chemical companies.
Fowl is a short documentary examining how chicken has become central to the revolution in how we produce our food. The film looks at how society has become disconnected from what we eat and how our food system has become dependent on fossil fuels.
Pollen Nation follows the journey of third generation beekeeper Jeff Anderson from the honey harvest on the High Plains to the warm winter-feeding grounds of California. It also explores the history of human interaction with bees, from ancient Egyptian beekeepers to professional bee brokers in the 21st century.

October 18: Crónicas (Part of our monthly Movies en Español series)
Oscillating between furor and languor, rage and repose, Crónicas mixes ethnography with media critique, questioning the nature of truth in reportage, the media's power to effect (and affect) that truth, and the queasy complicity and mutual fascination between interviewer and subject. Inspired by a gruesome real-life trio of South American serial killers (among them Luis Alfredo Garavito, who shocked Colombia with the murders of about 140 children), Crónicas follows Miami tabloid TV correspondent Manolo Bonilla (John Leguizamo) and his crew (Leonor Watling and José Mar Yazpik) as they report on one such killer in Babahoyo, Ecuador, failing Journalistic Ethics 101 in the process. The film is aided a strong sense of place; sorrow's descent on Babahoyo feels as perpetual and all-consuming as the torrents of rain that drench the region, and the town itself—much of it suspended over water on ramshackle bamboo bridges—threatens to collapse from its own psychological detritus. Lights Out San Francisco is a grassroots community group organizing a citywide energy savings event on Saturday, October 20, 2007, from 8-9 p.m. On this night, we invite the entire city of San Francisco, including schools, businesses, city and federal government agencies, churches, and individuals to turn off all non-essential lighting to save energy. The Bay Bridge, Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz and much of downtown will be turning off their lights.
Lights Out San Francisco http://www.lightsoutsf.org is taking the message of energy conservation to the streets!
Please join us for a bus tour of the city this Sunday, October 14th. Lights Out San Francisco (LOSF) Steering Committee member Jens-Peter Jungclaussen
http://www.dasfrachtgut.com has graciously offered not one, but BOTH of his veggie oil fueled buses for us to use this Sunday. Our plan is to transport friends and volunteers around San Francisco, stopping at different neighborhoods to pass out energy-efficient CFLs and information about LOSF.
We want to extend a very special invitation to our friends at the Friends of the Urban Forrest to join us on Sunday. Please be sure to RSVP to Brendan at Brendan@lightsoutsf.org, as space is limited! All the details are below. Thanks!
Who: Peter, his buses, volunteers, and you!
What: Passing out CFLs and info, asking businesses for permission to put up LOSF posters in their windows. There will be music and water provided, but please feel free to bring food and libations. If you choose to drink, we trust you will do so responsibly, as you will be representing LOSF.
When: Sunday, October 14th. 10:30am until we feel like we're done. You may stay as long as you like, but there will be occasional drop offs at public transportation stations if you'd like to leave before we stop.
Where: Meet at the LOSF office at 2548 Mission St. (between 21st & 22nd), where there will be a brief orientation.
Any questions? Call the LOSF office at (415) 643-5673

We are also distributing 110,000 free energy-efficient compact fluorescent light bulbs (CFLs) throughout the city. Look for our booths at events (www.lightsoutsf.org/events.html) or stop by our office (2548 Mission, next to Medjool) to get your free energy saving lightbulb. Our goal is to raise awareness and educate San Franciscans about the small changes they can make to fight climate change.

We thank the Friends of the Urban Forest associates for joining us in this effort. Visit here to pledge to turn off your lights from 8-9pm on October 20, and join the City of San Francisco in conserving energy and protecting our environment.

Volunteer to get the word out about this important energy initiative in your community! Email volunteer@lightsoutsf.org. Volunteer now!

6.30 pm Wednesday, Oct. 24 The Power of Community + Crude Awakening UCBerkely
Crude Awakening tells the story of how our civilization’s addiction to oil puts it on a collision course with geology. Shot on location at oil fields in Azerbaijan, Venezuela, the Middle East and Texas, the film visits with the world’s top experts and comes to a startling, but logical conclusion – our industrial society, built on cheap and readily available oil, must be completely re-imagined and overhauled.
With Panelists: Monica Moore (Pesticide Action Network, North America) and Miguel Altieri (Prof. of AgroEcology, UC Berkeley) Willow Rosenthal (City Slickers Farms) Antonio Roman-Alcala (Allemany Farm)
Discussion theme: What will Agriculture look like post-peak oil?

October 25: The Wind That Shakes the Barley
Ireland, 1920. Damien and Teddy are brothers. But while the latter is already the leader of a guerrilla squad fighting for the independence of his motherland, Damien, a medical graduate of University College, would rather further his training at the London hospital where he has found a place. However, shortly before his departure, he happens to witness atrocities committed by the ferocious Black and Tans and finally decides to join the resistance group led by Teddy. The two brothers fight side by side until a truce is signed. But peace is short-lived and when one faction of the freedom-fighters accepts a treaty with the British that is regarded as unfair by the other faction, a civil war ensues, pitting Irishmen against Irishmen, brothers against brothers, Teddy against Damien... http://critical-mass.org Bring: bike, helmet, Headlamp, costume.
I sure would like to see the ride group together and remain a mass,
thereby minimizing impact on traffic and pissing off fewer motorists.
I would like them to block cross traffic JUST at the intersection ahead of the mass;
NOT 3 intersections ahead.
We could make room for cars to make right turns at corked intersections.
I think we should be visible and fun, and not upset or inconvenience people.

Mark your calendars. Jan L. showed this movie to a number of us back in June. It is excellent!

7:30 pm Tuesday, Oct. 3O SNEAK PEAK of King Corn UCBerkely
Don’t miss one of the year’s most important and entertaining films! With all the talk surrounding Michael Pollan’s newly infamous The Omnivore’s Dilemma, this movie has come at the perfect time! It’s the smarter, hipper Super Size Me for a hopeful new age in which people have realized that our current state of agriculture is in big trouble.
King Corn is a feature documentary about two friends, one acre of corn, and the subsidized crop that drives our fast-food nation. In King Corn, Ian Cheney and Curt Ellis, best friends from college on the east coast, move to the heartland to learn where their food comes from. With the help of friendly neighbors, genetically modified seeds, nitrogen fertilizers, and powerful herbicides, they plant and grow a bumper crop of America’s most-productive, most subsidized grain on one acre of Iowa soil. But when they try to follow their pile of corn into the food system, what they find raises troubling questions about how we eat – and how we farm.
With panelists: Michael Pollan (author, The Omnivore’s Dilemma, The Botany of Desire), Aaron Woolf (film maker), Ian Cheney +Curtis Ellis (film stars).
Discussion theme: Corn, farm subsidies, rural communities and the Food Bill.
Screening at the Hillside Club 2286 Cedar Street in Berkeley. This film will open at the Shattuck theater on November 2nd.

Eugene Debs, Josef Stalin, Melians

"They have always taught and trained you to believe it to be your patriotic duty to go to war and to have yourselves slaughtered at their command. But in all the history of the world you, the people, have never had a voice in declaring war, and strange as it certainly appears, no war by any nation in any age has ever been declared by the people."
-- Eugene Debs
