MONDAY, NOVEMBER 1
7:30 p.m.
Unitarian Hall
505 E. Charleston, Palo Alto
(Wheelchair accessible)
$5 - $10 suggested donation

“Political Advertisement 2000” features ads from the 1950s to the present, including the 2000 campaign. As filmmakers Antonio Muntadas and Marshall Reese trace the development of the TV spot, what emerges is the political strategy and manipulative marketing techniques of the American televisual campaign process. “Political Advertisement 2000” includes many rare spots, some never before seen. Edited without commentary, the ads showcase an endless stream of candidates, from Eisenhower to Al Gore, who are sold like commercial products.

The film will be followed by an open discussion led by Elliot Margolies, Executive Producer at the Mid-Peninsula Community Media Center.

Sponsored by Peninsula Peace and Justice Center, Peace Umbrella of Unitarian Universalist Church of Palo Alto, and World Centric.

Professor Zimbardo will apply a social psychological analysis to the abuses committed by American soldiers to prisoners in Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison. Zimbardo will focus on the situational influences that seduce good people into behaving in ways that are alien to their traditional morality. Zimbardo is Professor of Psychology (Emeritus) at Stanford University; his Stanford Prison Experiment was a classic demonstration of the power of the situation over individual behavior.

The progressive media event of the year and a defining moment in the modern resurgence of film as an alternative channel for news, perspective and informed commentary.
