Do not strain your eyes with close-up work.

# Come one and all to our "Disproving Astrology Party" @ The Cracktory THIS FRIDAY!
Friday, February 18 10:00 PM 1580 Custer Ave. SF West of 3rd St @ Evans
It turns out Richard, Jess, Cat, Fae, Jason, Diana, James and Keith are all Aquariuses (Aquarei?). If the fact that these radically different people have the same sign doesn't disprove astrology for you, well, I suppose you probably still believe in the Tooth Fairy(*)..
But "When?" you ask?! (hello?! It's written on the first line!) Friday! Friday! Friday! February 18th! Starting the very minute you get here!
And boy do we have some great entertainment lined up for you! Yes, we've got our own hot water Aquarian Aquarium(**), complete with fish, rays and sharks(***), as well as the usual assortment of wildlife in the hot tub! And for those of you doing the right hallucinogens we've got bubblewrap tentacle porn and an INDOOR MONSTER TRUCK RALLY(****)!
Don't miss out on this unique opportunity to wear that aquatic-themed costume you've been keeping in your closet! We encourage it! In fact, we insist!
The party is free, but please BYOB. Beautiful people bring their own alcohol! Really beautiful people bring enough to share!
So once again! Help us disprove astrology Friday February 18th @ The Cracktory (1580 Custer Ave)!
Oh, and NO SWIMMING in the radioactive creek!
Love, The happy workers at The Cracktory
(*) And no, I’m not talking the guy wearing a tutu who knocked your teeth out at Burning Man. Even *I* believe in him.
(**) This is assuming we actually get off our lazy asses and make it.
(***) Ok, so rays and sharks aren't fish? If it were up to me I'd say: If it lives in water and swims, it's a fish!
(****) If you actually see a indoor monster truck rally, let me know - I want to take what you're taking. This would be SO COOL! Meanwhile wheelchairs and tricycles will have to suffice
p.s. This message has not yet been approved by the Cractory Committee on avoidance of Virtue and encouragement of Vice.

Cost: $3 donation and Raw food dish to serve 8, per person

Please Join Us - Everyone Welcome! 6:00 pm start.
PLEASE try to be on time. We eat at 6:15 and our speakers generally start
at 7:00

Please bring a raw food dish of your choice to serve 8 people making sure to
review the guidelines for food below.
*********** Guidelines for Food ***********
Please prepare your dishes with raw, organic (at least pesticide/herbicide
free), vegetarian (vegan - no animal products) ingredients. Nothing cooked,
steamed, baked or otherwise heated above 105 degrees is appropriate for this
potluck. Dehydrated foods and dried fruits are fine as long as they have
been prepared within the temperature guideline above. Tofu and most seaweeds
are not raw foods. Please pay attention to what might go into your dish;
oils, vinegar, spices, salt...is it raw, healthy, etc. Could it be added
later at the potluck by those who want it?
Some attendees have been on the raw path for 20+ years so we must adhere to
these seemingly strict guidelines. There are some wonderful raw foods
cookbooks available at the local health food stores for new ideas, or you
can go to www.living-foods.com for lots of great recipes. Beautiful leafy
greens and veggies presented in a wide variety of (raw) ways are always a
winner. Be creative, enjoy yourself and have fun! If in doubt - leave it
out! Call or email if you need ideas or have questions.

Now you can send your friends to <http://WWW.MARINRAWFOOD.COM> for potluck
details.

# 2/19: The Changing Face of American Intelligence (alameda)
Reply to: jrufo@sbcglobal.net
On February 19th, The Alameda Public Affairs Forum will present a program on “The Changing Face of American Intelligence”. The program will be presented by Dr. Barry Schutz, a former analyst at the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency, The Rand Corporation and the Dept. of State’s Bureau of Intelligence and Research. Dr. Schutz has also been a professor of politics, international relations, and African Studies, in the U.K. and Africa, as well as the United States, and is currently Visiting Scholar at the Center for African Studies at Stanford University. The forum will be held on Saturday, February 19th, from 7 to 9 PM, at the Home of Truth Spiritual Center, 1300 Grand Street, in Alameda. It is free and open to the public.
Since its inception, the CIA has had the propensity to act like a "rogue elephant." However, right-wing governments have clearly stressed the operational mode over the analytical. The Bush II government, with total control of the legislative branch, is in the process of completely militarizing the operational side and neutering the analytic side. The tiny and exclusively analytical State Department Bureau of Intelligence and Research (INR) has always been a dissident intelligence voice against the more politicized CIA. Will this continue under Condoleeza Rice? Dr. Schutz will present a thorough discussion of these issues.
The audience will have time to ask questions about and offer comments on the Intelligence issues following the presentation.
This is the sixth in a series of programs presented by the Forum. "Informed discussion of issues is essential to a healthy democratic politics" said Dr. Arthur Lipow, chair of the organization. Future forums will be announced.

Global Women Strike/SF sent us this message:
We are writing to invite you to the next planning meeting for the 6th
GLOBAL WOMEN'S STRIKE for the San Francisco Bay Area during the
week of International Women's Day (March 8, 2005). The planning
meeting will be on Sunday February 20, 11am at Crossroads Women's
Center, 333 Valencia St, Room 350, San Francisco. (On the third floor,
left at the top of the stairs, than right and follow the main hall,
signs will be posted.)
This year the Strike will focus on demanding:
A Living Wage for All our Work &
Pay Equity in the Global Market
End Poverty and War! Invest in Caring Not Killing!
(See below for the demands of the Strike. Letter to follow soon.)
As many will know, the Strike started in 2000 with women taking action
together on or around the 8 March. It has grown every year since,
especially in countries of the Global South. Grassroots women in over
60 countries have demanded that society Invest in Caring Not Killing,
that the money squandered on war be spent instead on what our
communities need - beginning with payment for all caring work. For
us opposing war and ending poverty are inseparable, and that begins
with paying those who care.
Men's support and participation internationally has been coordinated
by Payday, a multiracial network of men, which is organizing with
women and men who are Refusing to Kill: refusing the military and its
lethal and repressive work, from the US and UK to Israel and Eritrea
. . . The Strike has also spread the word about the armed forces in the
Bolivarian Revolution of Venezuela which are working with the
community to grow and distribute food, build housing, and in other
ways caring for, not shooting at, the community.
Everyone is welcome at the meeting. This is a chance to strengthen all
the organizing people have been involved in, and to make the
independent voice of the grassroots, women and men, heard over the
warmongering and witch-hunting of the Bushes, the Blairs and their
babes. Let's make it a Happy New Year!
We hope to see you on February 20. Bring a snack to share, and please
let us know if you will need childcare or can provide rides.

Crossroads Women's Center, PO Box 14512, San Francisco;
Tel/fax: 415-626-4114 Email: sf@crossroadswomen.net
* * * * * Demands of the Strike:
* Payment for all caring work - in wages, pensions, land & other
resources. What is more valuable than raising children & caring for
others? Invest in life & welfare, not military budgets or prisons
* Pay equity for all, women & men, in the global market.
* Food security for breastfeeding mothers, paid maternity leave and
maternity breaks. Stop penalizing us for being women.
* Don't pay 'Third World debt'. We owe nothing, they owe us.
* Accessible clean water, healthcare, housing, transport, literacy.
* Non-polluting energy & technology which shortens the hours we work.
We all need stoves, fridges, washing machines, computers, & time
off!
* Protection & asylum from all violence & persecution, including by
family members & people in positions of authority.
* Freedom of movement. Capital travels freely, why not people?

Money, belligerence, slavery, sex, law, manipulation, finding yourself, neutrality, love &
mastery.

Standing in Peace: How to find yourself in a world at war. Led by Marcia Doerr, educator & legal
expert.

A talk on Learning the art of neutrality when it comes to standing in the world of international
law, as a sovereign human being and taking full freedom and responsibility as a peace maker.
Marcia goes into Law history, including how the legal basis for law changed in the civil war; into
territory on the credit and debt system and how the government "borrows" money from the federal
reserve using our birth certificates as collateral; into the difference between substance and
credit - that you have both a real self and a commercial self; into the international commercial
code, which stands above the law of nations.

We are offering this class free of charge, by invitation only.

STANDING IN PEACE, HOW TO LIVE WITHOUT FIGHTING

An afternoon with Marcia Doerr, legal expert, educator

For 144 years, since Abraham Lincoln, the North American continent has been a nation "occupied"
by the expression of "war powers" and its resultant "commerce."

Let's discuss the implications of how that relates to YOUR life today.

* Learn how you can "choose" between being a debtor or a creditor

* Do you prefer to be a Sovereign or a Taxpayer (deal with the IRS)?

* Are you a Private or a Public "person"?

* Configure yourself to be a Traveler or are you a Driver? Guess which
 one pays traffic fines!

* The meaning of Honor/Dishonor in law (and in daily life).

* How do you find your Self and resolve the fundamental conflict when your heart wants Peace in a
world at war?

*******************************************************
"Know yourself, know your adversary, and Victory is assured."

Contact: Douglas MacDonald, CLA Organizer
What: Regional Organizing Drive to Stop Educational Cuts! Oakland Education Association President Ben Visnick to join Benicia and Vallejo Teachers, Staff, Parents and Workers in an Open Forum to Save Our Schools
Where: John F. Kennedy Library, Joseph Room, 505 Santa Clara Street, Vallejo, CA
When: Sunday February 20, 2005 1-4 PM
Ben Visnick is President of the Oakland Education Association (OEA) and has been a key organizer against the cuts and school closures in the Oakland Unified School District. Currently, the OEA is organizing a broad coalition including teachers, parents, staff, inter-faith organizations and a variety of labor unions including the ILWU, SEIU and UFCW in order to stop the de-funding of Oakland’s schools. The State Administrator for Oakland has recently suggested a “public/charter” hybrid model district wide. Such privatization efforts have proven disastrous in communities throughout the country and simply create a two-tiered education system that fosters social fragmentation rather than common experience. Marketing, rather than educational improvement becomes a chief concern and focus of resources.

The Uhuru Solidarity Movement and the Uhuru Africa Club sponsors a film and discussion for Black History Month on Civil Rights, Black Power, African Liberation and the role of white solidarity.
Grass roots video footage covering the Civil Rights and Black Power Movements brings us up to the year 2005 on the struggle of the black community and African people world wide for freedom and liberation.
From the leadership of Rosa Parks during the Montgomery, Alabama bus boycotts of the 1950's to the rise in popularity of Malcolm X and the Black Panthers, the struggle for black freedom endures the attacks of the U.S. government under COINTELPRO. The Movement survives now in the midst of police containment, decades of a "war on drugs" and the massive imprisonment of African people in the United States.
Learn about the vison and programs of the Uhuru Movement and the role of Uhuru Solidarity in building a world where African and all oppressed peoples can benefit from the fruits of their labor and have access to their land and resources.

 MONDAY, FEBRUARY 21 7:30 p.m.
Unitarian Church 505 E. Charleston Rd, Palo Alto $5
Bill Moyers reports on Chapter 11 of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which multinational corporations are using to challenge democracy. Chapter 11 is only one provision in the 555-page NAFTA - negotiated to promote business among the US, Canada and Mexico and was supposedly written to protect investors, if foreign governments tried to seize their property. But corporations have stretched NAFTA's Chapter 11 to undermine environmental decisions, sue local governments, and overturn decisions of local communities. The cases are heard not in open court, but before international trade tribunals that make rulings in secret. The program details a system of private justice that is enabling companies to obtain covertly what they have failed to achieve publicly in national legislatures or courts. 58 mins, 2002

# No military recruitment in our schools!
 From: caroseligman@aol.com
Notice to students, teachers, parents who oppose military recruitment in the
schools:
Please join with peace activists to speak out at the S.F. Board of Education
meeting on Feb. 22nd, 7 p.m, at 555 Franklin St., 2nd floor (near Golden
Gate).
We passed Proposition N in S.F. by 63%. It called for the immediate
withdrawal of all U.S. troops from Iraq. But S.F. high school students are
being actively recruited by the U.S. military on campus through direct
recruitment and through the Jr.ROTC program. Many recent City graduates are
currently serving in Iraq. This must end. Schools must not be used to
recruit youngsters to kill or be killed in this illegal, immoral war!
Please help spread the word. Let us know if you will speak at the Board
meeting.
E-mail Bay Area United Against War at: giobon@sbcglobal.net

Draft Resolution for San Francisco Board of Education

Cut Ties with the Military

WHEREAS, the United States military is actively recruiting high school
students into the military to fight in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, many young San Francisco high school alumni are presently serving
in
military units fighting in Iraq; and

WHEREAS, it is San Francisco City policy by virtue of Proposition N, to
bring
all U.S. troops home from Iraq now; and

WHEREAS, over 1,500 U.S. soldiers and at least 100,000 Iraqis have been
killed in this war and over 10,000 U.S. soldiers and unknown thousands of
Iraqis
have been wounded; and

WHEREAS, the hundreds of billions of dollars spent on the war have robbed
our
children of resources that should be spent on education and other human
needs; and

WHEREAS, military presence in our schools legitimizes the message that
violence is acceptable; THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT:

It shall be the policy of the San Francisco Board of Education to support
cutting all ties with the United States military, including, but not
limited to:
Ending military recruitment on campuses; ending the Junior Reserved Officer
Training Corps (JROTC); and ensuring that all students and parents are
informed
of their right to deny military recruiters access to their names, addresses
and telephone numbers.

Out, the Making of a Revolutionary:
Convicted of the 1983 US Capitol Bombing, and 'conspiring to influence,
change, and protest policies and practices of the United States government
through violent and illegal means", Laura Whitehorn, an out lesbian and
one of six defendants in the Resistance Conspiracy Case, spent 14 years in
prison. OUT is the story of her life and times - five tumultuous decades
of struggle for freedom and justice. Planting a bomb in the US Capitol
Building was the culmination of a lifetime of radical protest for
Whitehorn, and 14 years in federal penitentiary have only solidified her
stance as a committed American revolutionary.

Torture, illegal detention and other human rights
abuses have always been weapons used by the United
States government to crush dissent and social justice
movements. Today, the criminalization of people of
color in the US, mass illegal detentions and
deportations of Arabs, Muslims and immigrants, torture
in Guantanamo, Abu Ghraib and in US prisons are
evidence of a terrifying escalation in US repression
both at home and abroad.

What can we do? Our strength lies in building on the
experiences of those who resist: here in the US, in
Latin America, Palestine, the Philippines, the
Caribbean, and in countless communities throughout the
world. The International Human Rights Initiative was
conceived by a strong diverse coalition, including US
political prisoners, to help unite the emerging global
resistance movement.

# David Harris presents his new book...
THE CRISIS: The President, The Prophet, and the Shah
1979 and the Coming of Militant Islam
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 24 7:30 p.m.
First Presbyterian Church
1140 Cowper Street, Palo Alto
$7 http://www.peaceandjustice.org
DAVID HARRIS presents his compelling new book, The Crisis: The President, the Prophet, and the Shah - 1979 and the Coming of Militant Islam. David Harris is the legendary antiwar activist who went to jail for draft resistance in the 1960s. Formerly a contributing editor at the New York Times Magazine and Rolling Stone, he is the author of seven previous books, including The League, Dreams Die Hard, The Last Stand and Our War.
A quarter century ago, a group of Iranian students swept into the United States embassy in Tehran, overpowering the Americans there and taking them hostage. The crisis that ensued would last for 444 days. It would define the Carter presidency and help give rise to the Reagan administration. It would begin as a rebellion against one brutal dictator and end with another in place. It was the turning point, the moment when radical Islam first rose up against America-the beginning of a clash that continues to define our times today.
Now, for the first time, drawing on unprecedented interviews with American, Iranian, and European participants, acclaimed historian David Harris tells the full story of those 444 days. Harris's gripping narrative races from Washington to Tehran to Paris to Panama, tracking a dying shah, a flailing Carter, an ascending Khomeini, the disastrous Desert One rescue attempt, and the lives of the Americans held in blindfolds amid a revolution like none other.
With The Crisis, David Harris has written an essential work of modern history that is also a breathtaking narrative of passion, politics, and faith.

love-in-action.  She can be imagined as "Mother Teresa goes to Burning Man,"

of children, gardens, butterfly costumes, horses, geese...  The kids have a
nationally reknowned theatre troupe, and have performed at the National
Opera in Lima.
Kia is from the U.S. and is an ultra-hip medicine mama whom I have witnessed

Redefining Our Relationships
A RADICAL LOVE WORKSHOP
with Wendy-O Matik
Author of the book, Redefining Our Relationships- Guidelines for Responsible Open Relationships
$10 – $20, sliding scale
http://www.wendyomatik.com
This is a daring and provocative how-to workshop on radically defined relationships and alternative lifestyles. Wendy-O Matik talks about what she has lived and experienced: open relationships. She believes that open relationships reduce the hazards that accompany unhealthy co-dependency. Open relationships challenge us to confront our jealousy and possessiveness. Committing to a relationship not mapped out by our parents or society or Hollywood means tearing down the very foundation of status quo and conformity. It means redefining and rebuilding your own version of an alternative relationship based on your needs and your values.
Loving openly and freely in this day and age, whether you're straight or queer, is a political act. We are conditioned by out-moded social norms that limit our perceptions and shackle us to unhealthy cycles of dissatisfying relationships. Yet we live in a time where we can choose our own gender or redefine our own sexual identity. Isn't it safe to assume that we also have a right to decide what kind of relationship is more suitable to our lifestyle? Declare yourself a revolutionary activist of the heart. Find out how you can expand your potential to love, and radicalize your lifestyle!

# The Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America's San Francisco
Bay Area chapter will again be participating in the San Francisco St.
Patrick's Day Parade and is once again organising an Anti-Imperialist
Contingent as part of its participation.
The parade is taking place this year on Sunday, March 13th. While we never
have many details this much before the actual parade date, the contingent
will undoubtedly assemble between 10:45 and 11:15 a.m., somewhere south of
Market and, of course, details will be forthcoming once we know them.
The focus of the Anti-Imperialist Contingent this year will again be on
ending the occupation of Iraq and of Ireland, and the slogans we are putting forward are:
British and American Imperialism, Out of Iraq! Out of Ireland!
No War but the Class War!

# March 15th, 2005, will mark the ninth year of the International Day
Against Police Brutality (IDAPB). It first began in 1997 as an initiative
of the Black Flag collective in Switzerland, with the help of the Montreal
Collective Opposed to Police Brutality. The date was chosen because on
March 15th, two children, aged 11 and 12, were beaten by the Swiss police.

Panel Including Ward Churchill Cancelled in New York
02/01/2005 ACADEMIC FREEDOM QUESTIONED WHEN CRITIC OF US GOVERNMENT INTERVENTION CAN'T SPEAK AT SMALL COLLEGE
February 1, 2005: University of Colorado Boulder Professor and longtime American Indian activist Ward Churchill has come under increasing criticism recently because of his view of why the September 11th events happened and could occur again. Prof. Churchill was scheduled to speak at Hamilton College in New York state this Thursday, and family members of people who died in the 9/11 incidents have been protesting his right to speak. Hamilton's website this afternoon indicated that the panel, "Limits on Dissent", has been cancelled due to "safety concerns," even after the event had been moved to a larger building. Churchill's speeches, essay, and book entitled "On the Justice of Roosting Chickens" earned national media attention in the leadup to the cancellation of the event. On January 31st he resigned his post as Chair of the Department of Ethnic Studies at the University of Colorado, but not his teaching position. Churchill is scheduled to speak at the San Francisco Anarchist Bookfair on March 26th
