The Arctic Wildlife Refuge is under attack -- a sneak attack. We need your
help right now to stop oil drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge before
it's too late.

In the next two weeks, President Bush and his pro-drilling allies in
Congress may try a sneaky backdoor trick to pass their controversial
proposal to drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge by
inserting it in the must-pass federal budget bill.

In March, some members of Congress will try to approve Arctic drilling by
hiding their proposal in the federal budget bills -- the only bills that are
exempt from filibuster or extended debate. This sneaky attempt not only
defies the democratic process, but it reveals the fundamental weakness of
the push for drilling: proponents of drilling know they cannot pass this
through the normal legislative process, so they are resorting to a
procedural tactic to prohibit an open and honest debate.

A lot is riding on this decision. This incomparable wilderness is home to
more than 250 animal species, including wolves, grizzlies, caribou, and
millions of migrating birds. Unfortunately, it is also the target of an
intense, relentless lobbying campaign by the oil industry.
Unless we stop them, this world-class wilderness will become a vast oil
development field.
We need you to help make some noise! If we can draw enough attention to
this issue, we can stop oil industry allies in Congress from getting away
with this attempt to slip Arctic drilling into the budget bill.

drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge.

Dear Member of Congress,

I'm very concerned about rumors I've heard that some pro-oil industry
members of Congress are planning to use a sneaky maneuver to try to open the
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge up to drilling.
I urge you to stop any and all attempts to insert Arctic drilling in the
upcoming budget legislation. Inserting Arctic drilling into the federal
budget not only defies the democratic process, but it reveals the
fundamental weakness of the push for drilling: proponents of drilling know
they cannot pass this through the normal legislative process, so they are
resorting to a procedural tactic to prohibit an open and honest debate.
Not only is the Arctic Refuge an important wild place that we must preserve
both for the animals and plants that call it home now, but also for future
generations of Americans. Drilling in the coastal plain of the Arctic
Refuge would do permanent, irreparable damage to this wild place and its
inhabitants.
Even if the biodiversity, uniqueness, and beauty of the Arctic Refuge were
not an issue, drilling in the Arctic Refuge is not the answer to America's
energy problems. All reports show that the Refuge would yield less oil than
the US consumes in a single year, at best. Furthermore, any oil would not
even be available to consumers for another ten years!
There are smarter ways to address our energy needs such as using existing
technology to make our cars and trucks more efficient, and investing in
cleaner, renewable forms of energy like wind and solar power.
I ask you to do everything in your power to prevent drilling in the Arctic
National Wildlife Refuge before it is too late to protect this special and
wild place.
Thank you for your help and your time.
