The San Francisco Bay Flyway Festival is the only 3-day birding festival in
San Francisco Bay. Our attendance has grown steadily over the last few years.
In spite of the rainy weather last January, more than 3,000 attending the
Saturday Family Wildlife Exploration Expo and as many as 3,000 attended Friday,
Sunday, and the regional outings. The indoor activities are in Building 897 and
many of the tours leave from the parking lot in front of the building. Saturday
activities run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday hours are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Please
note that you are strongly encouraged to staff both Saturday and Sunday.
Although we do allow either Saturday or Sunday only participation by exhibitors,
due to Sunday news coverage of Saturday at the Festival, the folks who come out
on Sunday expect the same number of exhibitors as Saturday. If you haven\'t
stayed over to Sunday, you are missing out on a second day of enthusiastic
potential supporters.

Ecological and social crises are caused by an economic system dependent on
accelerating growth. This self-destructing political economy sets goals in terms
of corporate profits. A revolution is underway as people realize that our
needs can be met without destroying our world. Future generations will look back
at the epochal transition we are making to a life-sustaining society, the
Great Turning. It is gaining momentum, through the actions of countless
individuals and groups around the world. To see this as the larger context of our
lives clears our vision and summons our courage.

Eco-philosopher Joanna Macy, Ph.D., is a scholar of Buddhism, general systems
theory, and deep ecology. She is a leading voice in movements for peace,
justice, and a safe environment. Interweaving her scholarship and four decades of
activism, she has created both a ground-breaking theoretical framework for a
new paradigm of personal and social change, and a powerful workshop methodology
for its application. Her wide-ranging work addresses psychological and
spiritual issues of the nuclear age, the cultivation of ecological awareness, and
the fruitful resonance between Buddhist thought and contemporary science. This
work is explored in her books Despair and Personal Power in the Nuclear Age,
Dharma and Development, Thinking Like a Mountain, World as Lover, World as Self,
and Coming Back to Life: Practices to Reconnect Our Lives, Our World (with
Molly Young Brown, New Society Publishers, 1998).

Mon. Feb. 5 7 pm Seaflow Monthly Meeting - Sausalito

Seaflow, 1062 Ft. Cronkhite, Sausalito
415-229-9366 maryjorice@seaflow.org www.seaflow.org

Dozens of southern resident \"killer\" whales have been reported in our
vicinity this week between San Francisco and the Farallone Islands. Researchers
believe that they have traveled from Puget Sound to hunt salmon along the
California Coast. Further investigation reveals that the orcas are also here to
announce (attend?) Seaflow’s monthly community meeting, this Monday at Seaflow\'s
seaside office at Ft. Cronkhite. Do join the pod!

We have two additional and extraordinary Pacific Northwest dwellers who are
journeying to share music, myth and merriment with us. Don’t miss the \"killer\"
performance by this multi-talented duo, Judith Kate Friedman and fiancé Daniel
Deardorff (see below).

Monday\'s monthly meeting will also feature several presentations on the
latest accomplishments and challenges on the ocean noise front. We will provide
time for discussion and for questions.

Meeting Highlights:

•The Defense Department recently exempted the U.S. Navy from the Marine
Mammal Protection Act (MMPA), setting itself outside a law that has been a linchpin
in conservation efforts to protect marine mammals from harassment and death.
This bold move by the Navy followed an important California Coastal Commission
(CCC) meeting in Long Beach, where the Commission ruled that it would require
the Navy to adopt mitigation measures to reduce harm to marine life during
its mid-frequency active sonar training exercises off the California Coast.
Seaflow Program Director Ingrid Overgard and Science Advisor Michael Stocker gave
presentations at the CCC hearings. Michael will talk about the Commission’s
precautionary position, as well as implications of the Navy’s MMPA exemption.

•Seaflow recently hosted a meeting of our North American Ocean Noise
Coalition (NAONC) at our Ft. Cronkhite offices. The NAONC was founded by Seaflow, in
collaboration with other groups, to bring together national organizations to
work for safe and quiet oceans. The Jan. 25th meeting brought together
scientists, legal and policy experts, and environmental activists to strategize on
ways to work together to address the most pressing ocean noise issues. These
issues include the Navy\'s exemption from the MMMPA, and political and educational
strategies to maintain the current moratorium on offshore oil drilling along
the Outer Continental Shelf. The need for additional acoustical research to
inform policy decisions was also explored. Rona Weintraub, Seaflow board
member, will share some of the highlights of the meeting.

•Postcard writing this month will focus on thanking California Coastal
Commission (CCC) members for their stewardship of our ocean. We may also write our
elected representatives to request leadership in addressing the Navy\'s
exemptions to the MMPA.

•Learn about upcoming events including Seaflow’s upcoming Baja trip, (Does
one of the last spots have your name on it?), as well as volunteer
opportunities to support Seaflow\'s work.
