National Nutrition Month at the Berkeley Farmers' Market � Sponsored by the Ecology Center (bringing you the Berkeley Farmers' Market and Farm Fresh Choice) and "Eat Better Today" (a statewide project of the Ecology Center promoting nutrition to food stamp recipients and encouraging food stamp recipients to shop at local farmers' markets that accept the EBT food stamp card), Berkeley Community Gardening Collaborative, Berkeley Unified School District, and the California Nutrition Network (a state program promoting healthy active families through the daily eating of fresh fruits and vegetables). Author Event: "How to Shop Consciously: The Better World Shopping Guide" � One of the Ecology Center's most popular authors, Dr. Ellis Jones will join us to discuss socially and environmentally responsible consumerism. Dr. Jones has followed his popular The Better World Handbook with an organized, highly useful handbook that grades every product on the shelf from 'A' to 'F'. His pocket-sized Better World Shopping Guide is the culmination of 15 years of research, in which Dr. Jones compiled a database of every reliable source of information available on corporate behavior and synthesized the information into a single report card for every company. The Better World Shopping Guide also includes a summary of the essential information about particular product categories, profiles of the best and worst companies, practical buying tips, and online resources. Celebrating the Environmental Leadership of Cesar Chavez and the Farmworkers' Movement � Come reflect on the life and legacy of Cesar Chavez. We'll show the film "Fight in the Fields" which tells the story of Cesar Chavez and the history of the farmworkers' struggle. Locally produced, this award winning film includes archival footage and interviews with those involved in gaining rights and improving the working conditions for those who toil to produce the food we eat. Information will also be on hand about the movement today, and current campaigns to protect workers, their health, and the environment. Finding Inspiration from Wild Places for Your Native Garden � Come join us for a beautiful and useful presentation by Pete Veilleux, of the native landscape firm East Bay Wilds. Using inspirational photos of local wild places, Pete will show us how to figure out what and where to plant by exploring local wildlands for similar conditions. He'll tell us about his work caring for a piece of land in the Santa Cruz Mountains for an order of nuns which is partially redwood forest (some of the largest known on private lands) and partially ceanothus/manzanita/canyon live oak chapparal. He'll use this example and others to talk about "aspect" and explain what causes differences in growth areas that are situated right next to each other, and how we can use this information to grow our own beautiful garden landscapes. Seeds and the Privatization of Life, with Ignacio Chapela � In these times when the future of our food is falling more and more into the hands of large corporations, learn about the importance of saving seed diversity and about the local projects that are putting control back into the hands of local gardeners. Basic Composting Workshop � Join the Ecology Center's resident Master Composter, Carrie Bennett, for a free Basic Compost workshop (at Elephant Pharmacy) and discover amazing resources in your own backyard. With ordinary yard and kitchen trimmings, home composters can make a free soil booster. Using homemade compost will cut down on the amount of fertilizer and water we needed in your garden. Compost makes soil more fertile and helps gardens and lawns become healthy and lush. Composting is easy -- anyone can learn to compost by following some basic steps. Give a compost pile about six months and get back a crumbly, sweet smelling compost that looks and feels like soil. Home composting is good for the environment, good for your yard, and easy to do! Summit: "Bay Area Solutions to Global Warming" � Transportation is responsible for half of all greenhouse gas emissions in the Bay Area. While new technologies can help reduce emissions, they will not solve the problem. We must make it easier, even desirable, for people to drive less. The Bay Area can lead the way by creating walkable neighborhoods connected by fast, convenient transit. Volunteer: "Restore Wetlands in Palo Alto" � Save The Bay is partnering with the City of Palo Alto Baylands Nature Preserve to restore wetlands at the mouth of San Francisquito Creek. We will continue planting native plants until the winter rains subside. Later in the spring and early summer we will focus on removing non-native plants like fennel, mustard, pepperweed, and thistle.
