Bill of Rights Defense Committee - (BORDC)
Meet Nancy Talanian, founder of the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (BORDC), and James X. Dempsey, Policy Director of the Center for Democracy and Technology (CDT)
Nancy Talanian will talk about how BORDC’s work has transformed concern, outrage, and fear over new laws and policies into a coordinated national movement, and she will outline BORDC’s ambitious plans to restore civil liberties and human rights in the future. Jim Dempsey of CDT will join Nancy to address post 9/11 legislation issues such as PATRIOT Act oversight and warrantless domestic surveillance. Jim, who is a member of BORDC’s Advisory Board, is a legal expert on electronic surveillance, privacy and national security who testifies regularly before congressional committees. He is a co-author, with David Cole, of Terrorism and the Constitution.

As Congress and the mainstream media are distracted by the new troop escalation in Iraq, little attention is given to the much more consequential reality that we may be only a few months, weeks, or even days away from a new and potentially more horrifying war.
At this summit, a wide range of organizations and activists are coming together to take a serious look at how, together, we may be successful in preventing an attack on Iran. See the end of this message for a partial list of organizations that have confirmed their attendance in this summit.

The Social Justice Center of Marin Board of Directors graciously invites you to join us in celebrating the life of Valmar Schaaf on Saturday, March 17, 2007 from 2-4pm. We will gather at Falkirk Cultural Center which is located at 1408 Mission Street in San Rafael.A program in honor of Val will take place from 2-3pm, and refreshments will be offered from 3-4pm.
Falkirk Center is wheelchair accessible from the rear entrance.
As an activist, Val was involved in countless causes and groups for much of his life. He worked with unions, peace & justice groups, anti-war groups, pro-Palestine groups, etc. He and his wife Evelyn spearheaded the Living Wage Ordinance project in Marin County most recently, which set an increased minimum wage for In-Home Support Services workers, private contractors with the county who have $25,000 contracts minimum, and county employees who weren't covered by any union contract. He was a board member of the Social Justice Center of Marin for many years, and was an active member of Media Action Marin up until his death. Val was always calm & reasoning, even in the midst of controversy around him. His advice was ever straight to the point and without pretense. He has left a legacy of tireless, deeply devoted activism as a glowing example for all of us to emulate. He will be greatly missed.
In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to make a contribution in Val's name, to the "Social Justice Center of Marin". If you choose, you can designate that the funds be used for the two task forces that Val most recently worked on, just write "Media Action Marin" and or "Living Wage Ordinance" on the "Memo" line on the check. On March 17–18, 2007, tens of thousands of people will be marching in the streets of San Francisco in what will be the largest antiwar protests since 50,000 people demonstrated in September 2005. March 17–18 will be Global Days of Action against war and occupation with demonstrations taking place in hundreds of cities around the world to mark the fourth anniversary of the start of the "shock and awe" invasion of Iraq. Anti-war organizations are calling for mass demonstrations in Washington, D.C., Los Angeles, San Francisco, Seattle, Chicago and other cities and towns throughout the United States as anti-war actions take place throughout the world on this global day of action. MPJC urges that everyone in the antiwar movement come together in unity against the criminal actions of the U.S. government. In San Francisco, the march and rally will take place on Sunday, March 18. (The annual St. Patrick's Day Parade is taking place on Sat., March 17 in SF.)

"¡Salud!," Healthcare film, Screening in Marin
¡Salud! ? a new feature documentary by Academy Award nominee Connie Field ? explores the curious case of Cuba, a cash-strapped country with what the BBC calls 'one of the world's best health systems.' And for 40 years, Cuba's taken it to the road, their doctors in demand by other struggling nations. Cuba's volunteer corps now posts 28,000 health professionals in 68 countries. Cuban medical schools enroll 30,000 students from other developing areas, an unprecedented undertaking for any country. The film probes the motivations of international students at Havana's Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) where a bold paradigm shift is producing doctors committed to public service. Through these stories and testimony from experts around the world, ¡Salud! traces the opinions and competing agendas that mark the battle for better global health.
Dr. Kay Taylor, a Bay Area gynecologist, will introduce the program. Dr. Taylor retired from Kaiser in 2005 to organize a volunteer medical service called Prevention International: No Cervical Cancer (PINCC), which provides mobile one-visit care to women in need. Dr. Taylor has worked in Central America with graduates of the Cuban Medical School; and PINCC’s team visited Cuba at ELAM’s invitation in November 2006, toured their medical facilities and discussed future opportunities to work with their graduate doctors.
The film will be shown at The Redwoods Presbyterian Church, 110 Magnolia Avenue, Larkspur, This event is sponsored by Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas and is a fundraiser to support PINCC's ongoing work. A $5-15 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. The venue is wheelchair accessible.

More than 100 US students are currently studying to become doctors in Cuba at the Latin American School of Medicine in Havana, Cuba. The students come from the humblest areas of the US where medical care is scarce and expensive.
They pursue the dream of a lifetime, thanks to Cuba’s generous offer of 500 full scholarships which includes: tuition, books and room and board.
Upon graduation, they will honor their commitment to practice medicine in underserved areas in the US.
The ultimate goal of this collaboration is to set up a pipeline that will return well trained, community-oriented Black, Latino, Native American and Asian doctors to serve medically underserved communities in the US.

The filmmaker's subjects are patriotic young Americans - ordinary men and women who heeded the call for military service in Iraq - as they experience recruitment and training, combat, homecoming, and the struggle to reintegrate with families and communities. The terrible conflict in Iraq, depicted with ferocious honesty in the film, is a prelude for the even more challenging battles fought by the soldiers returning home – with personal demons, an uncomprehending public, and an indifferent government.
