Caren Andrews, respected art instructor from The Friends School, will lead a special art project for children ages 6-12 and Janet Bishop, SFMOMA Curator of Painting and Sculpture, will be on hand to discuss the exhibit, participating artists and their work.

2. Arbor Day Thanks to Volunteers
Arbor Day 2007 was a rousing success thanks to the enormous contributions from both FUF volunteers and the Bayview community. Saturday March 10th brought together neighbors, volunteers, and young people from the local community to plant over 90 trees in and around Willie Brown Jr. Academy. The school and the surrounding neighborhood now enjoy many new young trees bringing a beautiful shade of green along with numerous other benefits. Featuring tree planting, a pruning workshop, games, and educational activities, the day offered many opportunities for people to engage and learn about urban forestry and the local environment. The dedicated efforts of FUF volunteers and the many organizations that came together to make Arbor Day a success will have a lasting impact strengthening the community and bringing awareness to the benefits of a healthy urban forest. 3. Youth Tree Care Volunteer Training Day - April 21
Friends of the Urban Forest is again offering the opportunity to learn early tree care with the Youth Tree Care Team. This is a great chance for beginners to learn the fundamentals of early tree care from young people who know about and care for our urban forest. Volunteers will assist directly with scheduled tree care led by our trained Youth Tree Care Team, making this a wonderful hands-on opportunity. We will be working in the Potrero Hill neighborhood Saturday, April 21st. If you are interested in joining us and learning how to care for your newly planted FUF tree please contact Reed Milnes at reed@fuf.net to RSVP.

4. Alice Griffith gets a tree nursery
Friends of the Urban Forest and Girls 2000 are currently working to complete a new tree nursery at the Alice Griffith housing development. Already hosting newly potted trees, the nursery is in need of your help. On Saturday, April 28th FUF will be hosting a second work day to install the irrigation system to sustain these future street trees. Hoping to have a completed drip system, the goal of the day is to leave the trees with an operational water system to ensure that the trees being fostered there will develop into ideal sidewalk residents. 5. Esta Gallant Kornfield - Former FUFer Passes Peacefully
Esta Gallant Kornfield, former Education Coordinator for FUF, died peacefully at home Saturday morning, surrounded by people she loved. She organized many interesting workshops for FUF, including the original Feng Shui lecture in 2000, and wrote many articles for our newsletter. She and her dog Tyler were always a welcome addition to our office. Her seven years of breast cancer tumult were hard work, but she lived those years as she lived her whole life, fully and smiling. She continued to paint, bicycle, garden, teach, parent, meditate, travel, design landscapes, volunteer, and so much more, until very recently. We miss her.

6. Neighborhood Organizer Tip
If you are a neighborhood organizer or interested in becoming one, here is a tip to make your planting a success. For more information on organizing a tree planting for your neighborhood please contact Suzanne Gavin at (415) 561-6890 or at Suzanne@fuf.net.
TIP: Blanket the neighborhood with flyers. Creating a flyer that you can leave at a neighbor's door will help make sure that you make contact with everyone. Even if there is no answer a flyer will make sure that your planting information gets to potential planters. Be sure to include your contact information and reasons why a tree is a positive and economical addition to the neighborhood.

7. Above and Beyond for Tree Care
Thanks to Tom Baumgartner of Zephyr Real Estate for supporting our tree care workday in Potrero Hill on March 24th! Tom rented a truck, got mulch for the trees, and hosted our hard-working volunteers for lunch in his beautiful garden. His support really made the day! 9. Better Streets Plan Kick-Off
The City is launching a Better Streets Plan that marks a new approach to street and sidewalk design. Beginning April 6, and over the next six months, people throughout San Francisco will have the chance to share their ideas and priorities for making our streets safer, greener, and more attractive and accessible.
The public is invited to attend an April 5 kickoff workshop at 5:15 in the City Hall Light Court.
Meetings scheduled for April include:
April 16, 6 - 8 pm, West Portal Playground Clubhouse, 139 Lenox Way
April 18, 6 - 8 pm, Rochambeau Playground Clubhouse, 250 25th Street
April 19, 6 - 8 pm, Eureka Valley Recreation Center, 100 Collingwood Street
April 24, 6:30 - 8:30 pm, SOMA Eugene Friend Recreation Center, 270 6th Street
With the community, city planners will develop streetscape design recommendations that could be applied to different type of streets, and that will include such things as lights, furniture, landscaping, bulb outs, crosswalks, audible pedestrian signals, more landscaping, and other features.
