Basic Organic Vegetable Gardening - CLASS IS FULL � Do you have a big backyard and want to grow some food? Do you have a small balcony and want to grow some herbs? Come learn to start growing foods and culinary herbs for your kitchen. We will cover the basics of starting a garden, including selecting and starting your seeds, building good soil, watering plants, and managing bugs and blights. Taught by Herman Yee, an avid gardener who has worked in many community garden projects in the East Bay. He has practiced Biointensive and French Intensive Gardening and is excited to share his love of gardening with others. Bring sunscreen, hat, and sun protection if needed. Sustainability Programs that Reach Beyond the Choir � Join us for a presentation of the Low Carbon Diet Program and the Green Team Project. Susan Silber, Sustainable Living Programs Coordinator with Acterra, and environmental consultant Bruce Riordan will discuss ways for individuals to get involved with two exciting grassroots projects that reach "beyond the choir" and empower us all to live sustainably. The Green Team Project and Low Carbon Diet Program are two national projects that organize groups of people -- from groups of friends or neighbors to work colleagues and community groups -- to educate themselves and others about ways to adopt environmentally-friendly habits and behavior. It is the team process, accountability and workbooks that create a fun, nonjudgmental and educational atmosphere to support behavior and lifestyle changes. Learn about how and why these programs work, and how they can be a powerful method for involving the mainstream in the sustainability movement. We will be forming teams at the meeting, or find out how you can form a team and empower your own "Circle of Influence." The programs are designed for all levels -- from those who don't know what a CFL lightbulb is, to those who have have given up their cars and have composting toilets! Please come and join us. Benefit: "Save the Oaks" � Bay Area Coalition for Headwaters (BACH) presents Country Joe McDonald, performing his Tribute to Woody Guthrie at this fundraiser for the Campaign to Save the Oaks. "Someone needs to protect these senior citizens from being kicked out of their home," says Country Joe. "The idea of just chopping down trees to build things is an idea that no longer makes any sense. This is a space well-used by creatures and people for years and years, not to mention that the whole Memorial Stadium was probably built to honor World War veterans. The way to honor them is to leave it alone." Native Plant Gardening for the East Bay � Using East Bay native plants that are naturally adapted to our local climate and that require very little water to thrive is an easy way to have a beautiful garden and conserve water, especially during the summer months. In this class you'll learn about local native plants, about plant communities, and how to choose combinations that work well in the home garden. We'll also discuss the nuts and bolts of site preparation and planting. Class is led by Lyn Talkovsky, an East Bay landscape gardener for ten years who specializes in local, native plants. EcoHouse Event: "Chickens and Ducks in Your Garden" � Longtime chicken rancher Linnea Due has raised chickens and ducks in North Oakland and Mendocino County. She can help you decide which breeds are best for your situation, how to deal with predators, whether your chickens can free-range, and other chicken/duck lore. She may even come with a few chicks. Berkeley-Ukraine Partnership for the Environment � Ukrainian grassroots environmental activists visiting Berkeley in June will have a roundtable discussion with Berkeley's Center for Safe Energy Co-Founder Francis Macy, and John Stufflebean, Director of the Enviornmental Services Department for the City of San Jose on key environmental issues in Ukraine and ways in which we're working in partnership to address the globe's most pressing environmental challenges. Macy is a Russian specialist who has made over fifty working visits to the USSR and successor states since 1961. He has hosted many environmental leaders from Ukraine over the last twenty years. He received the Nuclear Free Future Life-Time Achievement Award for "building bridges between the Russian and American peace and environmental movements." Stufflebean worked in Ukraine with USAID in 2001, and has hosted Ukrainian delegates in the U.S. where he worked on collaborative efforts in city management and the environment. Postcards from Italia: Food, Land, and Culture � Join us for a talk and visual presentation that will take you on a journey to three areas in Italia that reveal origins, connections, parallels, and inspiration for California farms and gardens. Presented by John Valenzuela, horticulturist and Permaculture educator, we'll start in the central Hill towns of Umbria Tuscany, which has a rolling landscape similar to Sonoma and Napa. There we'll visit a spiritual community raising, preparing and serving a wide variety of crops. Reminiscent of the Big Sur coast, the next stop is the north coast of Liguria, the region of the Cinque Terre named after the five ancient fishing villages connected by foot paths that cling to the base of massive cliffs. This UNESCO World Heritage Site has an ocean preserve below, and a national park above, with thousands of nearly vertical acres terraced into a stair step landscape planted with tenacious olives, grapes, along with a variety of cultivated and wild fruits and nuts. Along the Bay of Napoli, in Sorrento, the Pergola protected lemon groves are explored, with views of Vesuvius and Capri Island. Then along the rugged Amalfi coast, the vertical seaside village of Positano reveals its hidden gardens, looking like the model for Sausalito or Laguna Beach. These areas shows a diversity of unique and abundant local food landscapes, cultural traditions, and religious heritage and provide many parallels for our own farms and gardens. Cultural Evening with the Indigenous Permaculture Program � Come join the Indigenous Permaculture Program for a presentation of our work in El Salvador and on the Pine Ridge Reservation and learn how indigenous people throughout the continent are stewarding the land for sustainable communities. The IPP has just returned from El Salvador after a one week immersion training to advance rural community development. We'll show slides of the community's appropriate technology stoves, rainwater catchment system, compost toilets, and tree reforestation project, as well as show slides from our most recent trip to the Pine Ridge Reservation. Plus, there'll be Aztec Dance, Native Drum, and native healthy food. All donations benefit the IPP's work. The Indigenous Permaculture Project links people in the Bay Area with Indigenous communities and traditional environmental knowledge. If you can't make the event but would like to make a donation, please contact us at the Ecology Center. All proceeds will help fund the work. It is cubicle-style office space in a light, airy, open office in the same building the Ecology Center occupies. Single and possible double desk locations are open. The building is located in West Berkeley, in the area referred to as the "Left Bank." Other tenants that share the space include small environmental nonprofits and projects. Drip Irrigation: Do-it-yourself, Save Water � Drip Irrigation is a form of landscape watering that utilizes low-flow and conservation principles, with very little water wasted to runoff, over-watering, or evaporation. It is also a system design that is versatile and efficient. This class will cover such topics as: * the benefits and limitations of drip irrigation; * the basic tools and supplies needed to install your own drip irrigation system; * the role that pressure and flow play in drip irrigation systems; * the cost of drip irrigation systems. This hands-on class will "de-mist-ify" residential watering systems. Taught by Jon Bauer, longtime irrigation system installer and gardener. Sponosred by the Alameda Countywide Clean Water Program. EcoHouse Workshop: Local Medicinal Herbs and Your Health � Learn the benefits of herbs and their use in western herbal medicine from a practicing Bay Area herbalist. Take an herb walk around the local community gardens and leave with a cutting of an easy to grow herb and tincture. We will discuss the use of herbs in health care, their growth habits, their distribution throughout the wild, and the practice methods through which medicine is extracted from them. Home Graywater Systems & EcoHouse/ Graywater Tour � Learn about the first permitted residential constructed wetland graywater system at the Ecohouse. We will discuss the principles and process of safely irrigating with shower, bathroom sink, and laundry waste water. Volunteer: "Scrub Canoes with Save the Bay" � Join Save The Bay education staff at our season cleanup and get the chance to win a free canoe or kayak trip, not to mention free lunch! Local non-profit Save The Bay leads canoe field trips on San Francisco Bay for about 5,000 youth and adults each year, teaching about the ecology and importance of the bay. After a busy spring season, we need you to help us: scrub down canoes, organize education materials, and help make minor repairs on our equipment. Save The Bay educators will provide all instruction, tools and guidance for the cleanup. No experience necessary, but volunteers should be able to lift heavy objects and do physical work. Volunteer: Weed Watchers � Weed Watchers go on weed scouting hikes in spectacular locations throughout the Golden Gate National Parks to identify weeds as they first invade. Discovering weeds before they become well-established is critical to reducing damage to ecosystem integrity, preventing the loss of habitat for rare plants and animals, and preventing costly natural resource management. Join staff and other volunteers to identify the priority weeds of the park, use digital cameras and GPS units to record sightings, and go on excursions to look for the weeds. The hikes vary in length and difficulty, but last approximately 3 hours. The focus of the walks are identification, not weed removal, so the outings are perfect for families, retirees, and those who just want to learn more about the plants of the park. Energy Commission Workshop: Increasing Energy Efficiency and Renewables in our Homes and Businesses � It's cheaper to save energy than it is to buy it. This workshop will explore cost-effective ways to reduce Berkeley's greenhouse gas emissions through increased energy efficiency and investing in renewable sources of energy locally. Last November, 81% of Berkeley residents voted for Measure G. The Measure targets an 80% reduction in Berkeley's greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, and directs the city to develop an emissions reduction action plan in partnership with the community. Volunteer: "Bair Island Canoe and Restoration" � This canoe and restoration trip will explore Redwood City's Bair Island, a unique bay gem with a history that includes use as a salt pond, a cattle grazing farm and now protected as part of the Don Edwards National Wildlife Refuge.
