Burning Man Update: The Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 11, Issue 14b Green Man
July 27, 2007

"Round two...fiyeeet!" This issue of the JRS is a big ol' bite of theme
related type stuff - still a regular JRS, and still broken out a la BRC
News/Participate, etc., but it's all stuff that happens to relate to the
Green Man theme - theme art, theme-related initiatives, the Green Man
blog, a contest for sharing green ideas...heck even green-theme events
(come learn about using bamboo tomorrow @BMHQ!). On deck: Health and
Safety JRS, Enviro JRS, regular ol' send-us-your-posts JRS...

Oh, did we say we'd send this next issue "tomorrow" when we wrote you
last? Because we meant to say we'd send it "as soon as we can stop
running around like headless chickens and actually find our fingers and
stay seated long enough to hit send my gosh how many days till the burn
what did you just say 36 days GAAAHHHHHHH!!!!" Or something like that.

More next week.

RENO DRIVE-THRU RECYCLING PROGRAM - READ THIS AND RECYCLE!

There's a long and multilayered story behind this first item, involving
several multi-year Burners, several regional managers of a Reno area
grocery store chain, a long-awaited visit to Burning Man, a decisison to
give a gift, cooperation from multiple communities, and months of hard
work to pull it off. It boils down to a story about a gift... and it's a
story that makes your post-playa ride home a lot easier and way greener.

Either way, we are grateful to the people behind this one for thinking
it up!

2007 Reno Drive-Thru Recycling Initiative
Saturday August 25 through Wednesday September 5 (Keystone location
operating until Sept. 9)

Open 24 Hours

In a multi-community effort to promote recycling, several Albertson's/
Save Mart supermarkets in Reno, Sparks, and Carson City will for the
first time be carving off a part of their parking lots and setting them
aside for recycling drop-off stations for our community, throughout and
following the Burning Man event.

All of these locations will be along burner-travel routes west and south
of Black Rock City (I-80, US-395, and Hwy 445), and open 24 hours
(including LABOR DAY, when most of the commercial recycling plants in
Reno are actually closed).

This recycling initiative is free, designed for your convenience, and
designed for maximum capacity, to help lighten up anyone's load to and
from BRC. Proceeds raised from these recyclables will be donated to
support environmental initiatives and education through the Gerlach High
School.

Check out what they're accepting: plastics (HDPE 1,2,4,&5), plastic
bags, glass, all metals (aluminum, tin, steel, iron, etc.), paper,
cardboard, and rechargeable batteries... even leftover bikes. Everything
except your dusty campmates, out of your backseat and off to be
recycled. All you have to do is drive into the parking lot and drop off
your recyclables in the dumpsters and bins provided.

Your recyclables will need to be as clean as possible before depositing
-- and, PLEASE, PLEASE, NO garbage dumping. Your participation and care
is very much appreciated! If this recycling initiative proves to be a
success, it can become a multi-year project for the Burning Man
community, according to these folks.

Think about it: Instead of guiltily chucking your recycling into a
dumpster or the landfill because you had to leave on Monday or in the
middle of the night, you can do the right thing with your recyclables
without ever leaving your car...and the Gerlach High School gets your
help maintaining their new solar panel donation and learning more about
alternative energies.

Perhaps you can see why we think this is so awesome.

*Special JRS bunny thanks to Nathan Heller, hardworking Drive-Thru
Recycling Project guru-advocate - not an employee or representative of
the stores, just a Reno area burner who wanted to help make a great
thing happen, so he went out and made it happen. Thanks, Nathan.

BURN CLEAN PROJECT - SUSTAINABILITY INFO FOR BURNERS!

"Burn Clean Project launches a new and improved version of our site to
bring crystal clear information to the Black Rock community on how to
sustainably energize our transport, camps, art & mutant vehicles. Lots
of biodiesel, biodiesel-friendly generator rental info, and green
transport options, oh my!

http://www.burncleanproject.org

Please check it out and forward this email along to all the burners you
know who could use the info...which may very well be every burner you know.

Also, we are organizing the BIOBUS (space) Shuttle with the
uber-fabulous bus diva Betty Biodiesel to transport burners from Reno to
BRC and back in a beautiful biodiesel-fueled bus (with a brand spanking
new engine!). All burners who donate $50 to the Biofuels4Schools
Campaign will be granted a roundtrip reserved ride from the Reno airport
or train station to the playa and back. A stop-off at the Wild Oats and
special water transport options will be available. Please write
connect@burncleanproject.org to get on the announce list. We will
provide a schedule with 20 spaces per day which you will reserve your
rides through and then you will proceed to a PayPal page for a place to
donate. The reservations will begin (if all goes well) Monday July 16th
in the evening. More details will be listed on the BCP site as they
become available.

If you have any relevant contributions for the website, please send them
to connect@burncleanproject.org

RIDESHARE IS TOPS! LET'S MAKE RIDESHARE AND HAVE A NICE TIME!

YES, that's right: it's the Burning Man Rideshare calendar!

http://rideshare.burningman.com

The scientists have spoken: the biggest climate impact of Burning Man
really is in our travel to the event. OK, so we stay parked once we get
there...but we can still do our best to minimize the impact. So c'mon,
if you're already driving, be smart (and greener) and share the cost,
the driving, and the sting of the return to the "real world" with a new
friend. Cast your lot with someone else in your area who's already
headed out, or share some space in your own car or truck. No empty
passenger seats in 2007!

and speaking of Rideshare and not wasting seats...

RENO TO PLAYA RIDESHARE RIDES AGAIN

From Rick Brown, beloved Reno Regional Contact:

"Hiya Burners:
Twin City Surplus (Twin City Surplus (1675 E. 4th St., Reno,
http://www.twincitysurplus.com) is again allowing us to use their
facility as the Reno to Playa ride share rendezvous location. If you
need a ride to the playa during the week of the event, Twin City is the
place to wait. If you are traveling to the playa and have extra room
please swing by there to pick up somebody who may be waiting. It is
easy freeway access between the Wells Ave. and 4th Street exits on I80
and you may make a new friend.

DON'T call Twin City to inquire about rides. They don't know anything
at all about the ride share program other than it brings in business to
their Burner friendly establishment.

Every year prospective riders write and ask 'What are my chances of
getting a ride?' I have to tell them 'Duh, I don't know.' If you have
participated in the ride share, either as a rider or driver, please drop
me (reno@burningman.com) a note and tell me about your experience. May
be this year I'll have something more useful to offer if you do.

-Rick Brown in Reno"

ENVIRONMENT SECTION AT BURNINGMAN.COM - IT GROWS...

Busy little enviro-bees have been working hard to bring more content to
the Environment section at Burningman.com, geared specifically at
providing the Green-Man-est information we can find about preparing for
that big thing in the desert.

ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT MOOP!!!! PERFORMANCE PLAYA CLEANUP

Hey, did you know that each of us is asked to spend at least 2 hours
helping to clean the public areas of Burning Man in addition to cleaning
up our own camp? Well, we are. The JRS claps wildly, hops up and down,
and cheers for this idea for putting in your two hours and being part of
an art event at the same time:

"Join MAECAMOOP (mythical and endangered creatures against moop) in a
performance playa cleanup. We are meeting at the Man ashes on Sunday to
form a mythical line of bodies to walk the playa together, gathering
MOOP and "cleaning art" as we go. Wear your favorite animal/mythical
creature costume and clean the land you have used all week. Bring
container for the moop collecting and most of all.. have a really good
time caring for the land that supports us!!

Sunday 11am at he Man ashes.

BONES WANTED ! HELP REVIVE THE HISTORIC BONE TREE SCULPTURE

Dana Albany writes:

"The Bone Tree needs your bones!!!

Be a part of Burning Man History! Flash Hopkins and Dana Albany are
restoring the Bone Tree sculpture that originally appeared on the playa
in 1999. It is a timeless, poetic sculpture that has obvious relevance
to this years "Green Theme". The Bone Tree is a 27-foot-tall, mobile
sculpture. To view, go to http://www.burningman.com Image Gallery and search
under 'bone tree.' The sculpture has been at the BM work ranch for 8
years and needs attention and repair! We need all the bones we can
get!! If you have or know of a large quantity of bones, we are willing
to travel within California, Nevada, Oregon, etc. to collect them for
this project. Exotic bones also welcome. If you have a few, bring 'em
with you! Anyone with lots of bones or an inside lead as to where to
find them, please contact us at danaalbany@juno.com.

Thank you and with much appreciation!!!"

PROJECT SWIRL - REPLACE YOUR BULBS AND BE PART OF PLAYA ART

Gecko says: "In the environmental spirit of this year's Burning Man, we
unveil Project Swirl. And you can participate--it's really easy! We're
encouraging as many people as possible to replace their old, inefficient
incandescent light bulbs with new, durable, very efficient, and very
very swirly CFL bulbs. The project goal is to replace a grand total 1000
incandescent bulbs with CFLs before Monday, August 27th, 2007, the first
day of the burn. All details are here:

http://crispyneurons.com/wiki/Project_Swirl

I will present the final results on the playa and create a sculpture to
to honor the project participants, which will go in the Red Light
District. Replace just one bulb and you'll help reduce electrical load
and pollution, fill less landfills and lower your electric bill all at
once. It's cheap, it's easy, it benefits you and the world... Can you
beat it?

Thanks in advance,
Gecko"

Last we heard, Gecko was halfway to this goal and you can help bring it
on home...great idea, Gecko!

CONTRIBUTE AND SPEAK FOR NATURE: ADD YOUR VOICE TO THE BELLIGERENT BLOOMS!

MORE truly creative projects to squeal and clap about:

"The Belligerent Blooms need your audio contributions!

The Belligerent Blooms are a garden of cranky electro-mechanical
flowers, accosting passers-by with their deeply rooted beliefs. We need
*your* unique voices to contribute to the cacophony.

Consider what you'd say if you were a belligerent bloom -- share your
experiences as part of nature, opinions about humanity in general or
Burning Man participants in particular, or any other flowery invective
you have to offer. Try to keep the comments short and pithy. Get a
giggle, challenge world views, add your voice! Above all, be belligerent!

Contribute your flowery invective by sending mail to
belligerent.blooms@gmail.com and including .wav (preferred) or other
audio files. Putting your quips in separate files will greatly please
the gardeners.

Then visit the Belligerent Blooms at the 'Blacklight Aquarium' theme
camp on the playa and hear the flowers sp(r)out your submissions."

ASTOR PLACE IMAGINED IN BRC!

We included this one in the Theme issue because to us it sounds like a
very "Green Man '07" contemplation to imagine a neighborhood, such as
Astor Place, reimagined as a neighborhood "taken back from the cars and
given back to the people!"

project URL: http://www.openplans.org/projects/astor-playa

"Astor Place (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Astor_Place) is a famous
plaza in the East Village of New York City. We're planning on building
a replica in Black Rock City, including the fabulous Cube, the Astor
Place Subway entrance/hut, and several Brownstone Stoops. But we want
to improve on the permanent Astor Place, to show how good it really
COULD be, if it were taken from the cars and given back to the people;
we'll be including a stage, bocce ball courts, benches, and other
smaller structures to play on.

WooHoooooo!!! BRING BACK STOOP CULTURE!!!

To make this succeed, we need your help. We are looking for New York
City-centric art to place around our structures, and performers of live
music and smaller acts that would like to perform on our stage for the
good people of BRC. We encourage you to use our cityscape as your
canvas.... You can have a parade, capoeira circle, dance lessons,
protests, etc. The art could include things that you would see on a New
York City street, like fire hydrants, street/ bus stop signs, mailboxes,
pigeons, man hole covers, rats, stencil art, etc.

(If you happen to be in New York, however, please do not REMOVE any NYC
property. Especially the rats and the manhole covers.)

If you have some art to contribute, or are otherwise interested in
supporting this project, please contact AstorArt@energyconnectingart.com."

RECYCLE CLOTHES AT THE BLACK ROCK BOUTIQUE

"Black Rock Boutique needs your help... Recycle your Clothes. Each year
the boutique strives to give away as much fabulous, furry and freaky
clothes as we can get our hands on...It's been a lean year for the
boutique, so we're asking everybody to donate as much playa wear as they
can, so we can keep the citizens of Black Rock looking fabulous. We
especially need green clothing for our Green Day party (Saturday). We
also host a daily fashion strut, and would love to have other theme
camps,live bands, and performers collaborate.
Contact eric@affinityrealty.net with questions."

YOUR WORLD-CHANGING IDEA ON DISPLAY: A CONTEST

We know that part of what's amazing about Burning Man is the
connectivity we share together on the playa through self-expression and
art. That's what the Green Man theme is about this year, especially --
sharing ideas and information with each other through creative interaction.

Through the Green Man theme and long before, Burning Man has had the
good fortune to connect with people at news organizations whose ethics
and values are also very devoted to changing the world through
connectivity and the sharing of information. We've met Burners from two
such projects - Treehugger.com and Current TV - in recent years, and
appreciate what they're doing. So what happens when Burners from
organizations like TreeHugger, Burning Man, and Current TV cross paths?
We exchange ideas and information, of course. Which makes us realize,
the people we connect to everyday (hey, that's you!) must have some
pretty good ideas, too. And that's when we came up with this contest --
an effort to help drive your world-changing idea out of your
imagination, into life, and onto the playa to be shared with Black Rock
City.

The Question

Got an idea that could help solve the world's most pressing
environmental issues? Something that would revolutionize the way we
drive, eat, build, live, build, or...something else? Want to share it
with the world? Your idea could be featured at Burning Man this year.
Your open-source project will be displayed alongside other breakthrough
ideas and technologies addressing important issues such as climate
change, pollution, green building design, and much, much more. The
winner will win two tickets to Burning Man, and the project will also be
featured on CurrentTV during their "TV Free Burning Man" coverage of the
event. (Check out previous "TV Free Burning Man" episodes at
http://www.current.tv/burningman/ .)

The Big Idea
The main requirement for submissions is simply that the project be
open-source. That is, you'll give everyone at the event a chance to
access your idea freely, then theoretically assess, dissect, remix, and
build upon it. In doing so, you become part of the mash-up of all of the
environmentally-oriented art, science, and breakthrough technologies
that will be on display at this year's 30,000-square-foot Green Man
Pavilion. We want to place your idea among some of the most innovative
open-source ideas in the world, letting you share the thoughts that can
help shape our future.

The Details
Send a digital representation and explanation of your idea to
contest@treehugger.com by August 11. (Got questions? Sean's also your
guy at this alias.) Our preference is for 3-D models, but just because
you haven't yet built a prototype of your Solar-Powered Robot That Will
Save the World doesn't mean you can't enter; we'll happily accept your
2-D renderings as well. Only got a sketch of that car that runs on
organic banana peels? No problem, Dr. Brown, as long as we can
understand the concept, that's okay, too. The winning entry will be the
one that best helps solve an environmental problem. Now go on, get going!

Judging
A panel of judges from TreeHugger, Burning Man, and Current TV will
choose the winning entry, which will be announced two weeks prior to the
event.

Thanks for reading. Now, Participate!

Indeed, 75 WPM may be too fast for the JRS brain to keep up with the JRS
