MMWD Meeting

Dear Friends,
MMWD has begun spraying roundup in the MMWD watershed as a means of controlling certain noxious weeds including star thistle and broom.
Many Marin residents, including myself, believe this is absolutely unacceptable.
Please join us in demanding that the MMWD stop spraying herbicides and pesticides on MMWD lands.
Marin County already has an extremely high incidence of cancers including breast cancer and we ABSOLUTELY DO NOT NEED additional cancer-causing agents in our drinking water and our bodies.
Pesticides run off of hillsides during winter rains and end up in stream and lakes, which supply our drinking water; any spraying above the elevation of Kent Lake is therefore unacceptable.
MMWD has successfully managed broom and other invasive vegetation with fire and other control methods for years and we would like those methods to be used instead of herbicides.
The new managing director of MMWD used to work for the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. From what I have seen he is strong advocate of pesticide/herbicide use.
I personally do not trust Monsanto or other pesticide manufacturers and do not want ANY of their products in my drinking water nor in my or my family's bodies.
Join us at the MMWD Board meeting and tell the MMWD board that you want them to immediately halt the use of dangerous chemical herbicides and pesticides in the MMWD watershed.

MPJC endorses Maggiore, Egger
for hotly contested Fairfax Council seats
The Marin Peace and Justice Coalition at its monthly membership meeting on August 1, 2005 endorsed Frank Egger and Mary Ann Maggiore for Fairfax Town Council. The vote among the roughly 25 members present was seemingly unanimous.
Maggiore, a coalition member and Fairfax Planning Commissioner, told the activists her personal motto is "vision into action." She was a catalyst in getting the commission to begin including sustainable living in the town general plan and is working on getting 100 cars off Sir Francis Drake Blvd. in the morning by coordinating access to private off-street parking spaces in the downtown area close to bus stops for those who haven't been able to take public transportation because it is too far away.
She supports infill development (building on parcels now vacant) to provide affordable housing, but is against destroying hillsides or ridgelines. She is also a big supporter of Community Choice Aggregation, which the County of Marin is considering and San Francisco has passed, which will allow the purchase of electrical power from "green" suppliers. Every year she stops using her automobile for six weeks in order to not burn fossil fuel, she says.

The United Farm Workers invites people of good will to join our second boycott of Gallo wine in 32 years. Together we will convince America's wealthiest wine making family to do the responsible thing by stopping the exploitation of their workers. The Gallos deny the majority of their farm workers benefits and grievance rights. The Gallos abuse, cheat and deny these workers benefits, job protections and humane living conditions in the heart of California's fabled wine country. The Gallos say they have no responsibility for the miserable conditions endured by their vineyard employees because they are "temporary workers". Haiti Under Siege
The Aftermath of July 6 Haiti Massacre

Members of the Haiti Action Committee will show film footage taken the day after the July 6 massacre that focuses on interviews with victims’ families.
Speakers Pierre Labossiere, Dave Welsh, and Doug Spaulding will discuss the country under siege, the ongoing repression of the poor, and the U.S. and U.N. participation in the atrocities. Mr. Welsh led a labor/human rights delegation that was in Haiti at the time of the July 6 massacre. The film documents the deaths of some of the more than 27 people murdered by U.N. “peacekeeping” troops. Most of the dead were women and children who were shot in their heads, many in their own homes.
Marin Interfaith Task Force on the America is co-sponsoring this event with the Haiti Action Committee. A $5-10 donation is requested. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Refreshments. Wheelchair accessible. For more information, go to http://www.mitfamericas.org.

The 3rd Annual Youth Empowerment Summit
San Francisco State University
On August 9th, 2005, high school student organizers from Making Waves wll bring together over 200 youth along with some of the leading Bay Area youth development agencies and artists to SF State. The Summit is FREE to youth and will provide workshops and panels in the areas of Social Justice and Youth Activism, followed by an Arts Festival featuring some of the hottest performers and artists celebrating culture and consciousness.

Salmonid Restoration Federation and the Trees Foundation will sponsor the 8th annual Coho Confab August 12-14, 2005 at the Wolf Creek Education Center in Redwood National Park in Humboldt County. The Confab is a symposium to explore watershed restoration and learn techniques to enhance recovery of salmon and steelhead. The Confab brings together community members, landowners, activists, scientists, and restoration ecologists for a weekend of innovative skills-building workshops, tours of restoration projects, community networking, and fun.

Protest CareerBuilder Fair -
Stop using Chimpanzees in Commercials,
Apes on television and in the movies have something in common with their human costars—their wide, toothy grins. The apes, however, are “smiling” in terror. To them, acting is strange, upsetting, and often torturous. During the 2005 Super Bowl, CareerBuilder.com released four commercials featuring chimpanzees made to act like humans. PETA contacted CareerBuilder, as well as the advertising agency that created the commercials, Cramer-Krasselt, to explain to them about the abuse great apes endure who are used for commercials, but we have received no response from either company.

A number of individuals in Marin County have created an exploratory group in anticipation of gearing up for a local campaign in support of Instant Runoff Voting (IRV) and/or choice voting.
We are inviting individuals or group representatives interested in election reform and in particular IRV ranked voting to get together for a brainstorming/planning/organizational meeting.
We will discuss and evaluate several proposals for action at the city and county level, including possible introduction of IRV at College of Marin and/or Dominican University, public forums, contact with elected officials, seeking endorsements of SB 596, etc.

Animal Place and Viva!USA are creating California’s first statewide network in support of farmed animals. These Activism & Campaign Training (ACT) workshops will be held in three northern California cities in 2005 and will help participants understand the treatment of farmed animals and vegetarianism.

7th Annual 911 - "Bring 'em Home"

“Bring ‘em Home” is this year’s theme to remind us that the best way to support the troops is to bring them home right now.
In addition to the main stage, the festival features an open-air art gallery of visual artists, a healing arts tent offering massage and yoga, guerrilla theater, a DJ tent, green commercial vendors and food booths, an eco village, kid’s zone, bicycle coalition, recycling program and a diverse array of social, environmental and political organizations tabling. New to the festival this year, an action sports area to include an ecologically built half pipe. 2005 will be the fourth year that the event will be broadcast live on PACIFICA radio station KPFA. Thousands will march on Saturday, September 24 in Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles. MPJC urges Marin's antiwar movement to come together for a united demonstration by joining together and marching together.
The demands of the demonstration -
While we organize around the demand for the immediate and unconditional withdrawal of the U.S. from Iraq, it is essential that the movement show the connection between the war in Iraq and all the other fronts of the U.S. government's war for Empire, including the struggle of working and poor people in the United States.

Want to learn more about the environment, take action and find out how you create a more sustainable world? Join 100 young people from across Marin and around the Bay area – as well as environmental leaders, educators and organizations - at Next Generation’s second annual Green Your School conference, hosted by the San Domenico School.
Have fun, meet people and learn about solar power, organic food, fair trade clothing, recycling, gardening, green transportation, eco-friendly buildings and other exciting environmental solutions. Connect with organizations including Next Generation, the Marin County Bicycle Coalition, the Marin Conservation Corps and the Marin Food Systems Project, and gather the resources and inspiration you need to make changes at your school.
The conference will also include a hands-on volunteer project involving organic gardening and a creek restoration, and an after party for youth participants. In addition to workshops and activities for young people, there will be special opportunities for environmental educators and advocates to connect and share ideas.
Where: At the San Domenico School, 1500 Butterfield Rd. in San Anselmo.
Cost: $27.50 - includes organic lunch and dinner. Need-based scholarships and group discounts available.

Join hundreds of college and high school students from around the country as we discuss and debate the future of this movement -- and plan to reclaim our schools from recruitment for an unjust war.
The last year has seen an amazing surge of counter-recruitment efforts on campuses across the country - with students kicking recruiters off campuses from Seattle Central Community College and UC-Santa Cruz on the West Coast, to Southern Connecticut State University and City College of New York on the East Coast, and a whole host of schools in between.
Students have found myriad ways of taking the military to task for the lies it tells us, for the bigotry of its 'Don't Ask Don't Tell' policy, and most of all, for asking our generation to become cannon fodder in an occupation the majority of Americans oppose. As young people increasingly reject being recruited, according to Major General Michael Rochelle, the US Army's recruiting commander, "Today's conditions represent the most challenging conditions we have seen in recruiting in my 33 years in this uniform."
It's time for students to figure out how to take this movement even further. This October, join hundreds of college and high school students from around the country as we discuss and debate the future of this movement -- and plan to reclaim our schools from recruitment for an unjust war.

PeaceNovato Summer Vigils

Remembrance Project: We are folding a paper crane for every American soldier who has died in the Iraq war. We will carry the cranes, each with a soldier's name, in the Novato Fourth of July parade. The Project will continue until the war has ended.
