Tuesday August 7th at 4:00pm.
This is really important. Please forward the message below to as many folks as you can to help preserve an urban grove of trees in the Duboce Triangle neighborhood of San Francisco. This is crucial that the Board of Supervisors hear from as many folks as possible on this matter, as it is our last chance with our appeal process. Please send a group email to the attached list of Supervisors so they understand the community's position. Clearcutting mature trees in San Francisco is not acceptable and cannot be tolerated by the community. Please help take action now. With Respect, Jonathan
: EMERGENCY :
Help Save Urban Trees in Duboce Triangle Threatened by Hospital Expansion
Call on the Board of Supervisors to preserve the Duboce Grove from being clearcut
Demand a full Environmental Impact Review(EIR)
The fate of the Duboce Grove, a row of 30 mature trees on Noe Street in the Duboce Triangle, adjacent to Duboce Park, rests on an appeal before the Board of Supervisors this Tuesday August 7th at 4:00pm. The Duboce Grove was originally part of a landscaping mandate by the S.F. Planning Commision as a condition to the construction of Davies Hospital in the 1970s. These trees have grown 30-40 foot tall and form an urban grove which creates a greenbelt connecting Duboce Park to Market Street and buffers the residential neighborhood from the enormous hospital campus behind the grove. The Duboce Grove is currently scheduled to be destroyed to make way for the development of a Medical Office Building @601 Duboce Ave. proposed by the owners of the Davies Hospital, California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC), which was approved by the S.F. Planning Commission last month and appealed by the neighborhood and the hospital workers union. There is plenty of room on the Davies Campus to build the building behind the tree line so we are not trying to stop the construction of their building, just the placement. Please take action to help preserve the trees.
ATTEND:
Appeal Hearing: San Francisco Board of Supervisors Chambers, City Hall
Tuesday, August 7th 4:00pm –Be sure to get there early to get a seat. Sign up to speak.

Please call and also send an email and demand that a full Environmental Impact Review (EIR) be done on the CPMC's Medical Office Building at 601 Duboce Ave. and express your opposition to CPMC's destruction of this urban forest to each of the Supervisors:

Sample Letter (personalize and modify as you will)
Dear Board of Supervisors,
I am writing to you in regards to the appeal you have before you this Tuesday, August 7th regarding the Medical Office Building that CPMC is planning to build at 601 Duboce Avenue. I urge you to require that a full Environmental Impact Review be performed to assess all of the impacts that such a project has on the environment and the neighboring community. I especially feel that you must also act to permanently preserve all of the trees that comprise the entire perimeter of the Davies Campus. In the age of global warming, I think that it is deplorable that an institution of healing is considering the removal of oxygen–creating trees. Studies have been done that prove the healing value of trees and plants in health care facilities and I think that CPMC should not only be honored that they have such a valuable asset, they should showcase these trees by creating a Natural Healing Path to utilize this resource in the healing process. Please take the lead and make this requirement as the MOB that CPMC wishes to build can easily be set back behind the tree line, and still serve the medical community. Thank you for your service to the city of San Francisco. Respectfully,

talk & booksigning for "Storming the Gates of Paradise: Landscapes for Politics"
Tuesday, August 7 at 7 pm
Rebecca Solnit has made a vocation out of journeying into difficult territory and reporting back - as an environmentalist, public intellectual, and anti-globalization activist. "Storming the Gates of Paradise," an anthology of her essays from the past ten years, comprise a unique guidebook to the American landscape after the millennium - not just the deserts, skies, gardens, and wilderness areas that have long made up Solnits subject matter, but the social landscape of democracy and repression, of borders, ruins, and protests.
Rebecca Solnit is the author of ten books among them "Wanderlust," "Savage Dreams," and "Hollow City" as well as numerous articles for which she has received awards and accolades. In 2003, she won the National Book Critics Circle Award for "River of Shadows," as well as the Lannan Literary Award.

Join us for an International Day of Action in support of Tibet! We will meet 8/8 at 11 am at the Civic Center BART station to march to City Hall and then onto the Chinese Consulate at Geary and Laguna. China is using the Olympics to try and legitimize their cruel, military occupation of Tibet and San Francisco is the only city in North America to host the torch on its massively televised trip around the world. The mayor has said "human rights are irrelevant" to the Games and we will bring banners, stilts and other antics into the streets to tell him otherwise! Please join us and the people around the world who will be standing up around the world against the cultural genocide taking place in Tibet!

"Making a Killing" follows two army newspaper reporters assigned to write a puff piece on the construction of an American funded hospital in Iraq. But as the facts unravel, it soon becomes clear that there's corruption, death, music and mayhem lurking behind this benevolent seeming humanitarian project. It is Michael Sullivan's hit adaptation of George Orwell's 1984, which has been touring nationally and internationally

What you need to bring:
1. An electric teapot - it should have a lid so that steam only comes out of the
spout. And If it has an auto shut off (most do) try and figure out a way to override
it (tape or string or something) because you want it to be able to keep boiling
and releasing steam.
2. At least 1 package of Kanekalon Hair (from any local beauty supply)
(One package makes about 10 dreads and it takes about 60-80 to do a whole head)
3. A towel or two (kitchen size is ok)
4. (Optional, but quite helpful) a small pair of needle nose pliers (these are used
to hold the small ends of the dreads near the steamer so you don't get burned
by the steam)
****Class size is limited so make sure to RSVP early.
Cost $40 per participant
or $35 per person for two people signing up together

Globalize This! SFCoordinating Meeting
Saturday, August 11 at 1:00 p.m. At Revolution Cafe in the Mission on
22nd Street at Valencia.
Globalize This! is a new group looking to coalesce activists,
community organizers, and other organizations in the Bay Area in
opposition to corporate globalization and so-called 'free trade'
agreements.
Free trade institutions such as the World Trade Organization (WTO)
and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and treaties such as NAFTA
and the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) are protecting wealth
and solidifying the power of multinational corporations at the
expense of the environment and workers around the world.
Globalize This! SF seeks to coordinate activities, events, actions,
and public forums that will help raise awareness about the negative
impacts of neo-liberal policies (i.e., pro-corporate globalization),
develop innovative campaigns to build a diverse activist base and
deliver concrete results in the struggle against the corporate
globalization agenda, and work in solidarity with other anti-
globalization groups world-wide.
It's about fighting against so-called 'free trade' and
'globalization' (think, the WTO, IMF, NAFTA, CAFTA, and the FTAA,
among others). It's about opposing policies that grant greater powers
to wealthy international investors and large corporations. It's about
struggling against international pharmaceutical companies that want
to use 'free trade' agreements to protect their patents and prevent
poor people from getting the medication they need.
And it's about fighting for workers' rights, the environment, the
rights of indigenous peoples throughout the Americas. It's about
defending poor people's access to free and affordable medicine and
health care. It's about protecting our natural resources from
corporate plunder, and it's about refocusing the global debate on
human need. It's about globalizing our citizenship to see our own
interconnectedness with all peoples of the world.
It's about being creative and defiant. And it's about being an active
force of change.
It's about making a difference in the time that we are given on this
planet.

Sunday evening 8/12, 7 pm -- PLEASURE AS SPIRITUAL PRACTICE
Most spiritual traditions -- both Eastern and Western -- take a dim view of pleasure. In Tantra, however, pleasure can be used as a tool for spiritual growth. Consciousness is the key to transforming mundane pleasure into something more profound. In this workshop, we will explore both the theory and practice of bringing consciousness to pleasurable experience and help you begin exploring your pleasure more fully and intentionally.
Mark Michaels (Swami Umeshanand Saraswati) and Patricia Johnson (Devi Veenanand) are co-authors of The Essence of Tantric Sexuality (Llewellyn Worldwide) and Tantra for Erotic Empowerment: The Key To Enriching Your Sexual Life (Llewellyn Worldwide, March 2008). A devoted married couple, they have been teaching Tantra and Kriya yoga together since 1999. Their teachings have been featured in numerous publications, including The Village Voice, Redbook, Now Magazine, Jane and Breathe. Senior students of Dr. Jonn Mumford, Michaels and Johnson have been named lineage holders of the OM Kara Kriya® system for the Americas and Europe. Both have studied Bhakti Yoga with Bhagavan Das, Tantra with Dr. Rudy Ballentine, and have been featured in Dr. Judy Kuriansky’s The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Tantric Sex

Living Green in Today's Consumer World
Tuesday, August 14th - San Francisco, CA: Join us as Lawrence Axil Comras, CEO and President of Green Home Environmental Store, offers a presentation on what it means to be green in our consuming patterns. He will address how we can deepen the level of what we each are already doing to make changes in our everyday lives. His online green products store grew out of the recognition that consumerism is one of the primary forces harming the world but it's also a force that can help save it. When we recognize this enigma and respond by buying well-designed, environmentally superior products, we can all make a difference in our own lives and beyond. Today, there's a green alternative for just about every kind of product on the market, and these kinds of changes can continue to happen as more people make the connection between their personal health and their personal environment. By the filmmaker who later p
Humanist Hall 390 27th St @ Telegraph and Broadway Oakland
http://globalexchange.org/getInvolved/bayarea.php
The title of this film is a Hopi Indian word meaning "life out of balance." The film was ceated between 1975 and 1982 as an apocalyptic vision of the collision between two different worlds: urban life, dependent on technology, versus the natural environment that all life depends on.
So often we perceive our world, our way of living, as beautiful because there is nothing else to perceive. In our globalized world of high technology, all we can see is one layer of commodity piled upon another. The "original" is the proliferation of the standardized. Copies are copies of copies. There is almost no ability to see beyond, to see that we have encased ourselves in an artificial world that has remarkably replaced the original, nature itself. We do not live with nature any longer; we live above it, but off of it. Nature has become the resource to keep our artificial, new world alive.
$5 donations accepted. Before and after the film, everyone's invited to indulge in our Humanist Tea House.

Sat Aug 25: Really Really Free Market Noon-Dusk Dolores Park
A Really Really Free Market is like a potluck for whatever you want to give or take away. Have you ever brought one dish to a potluck and gone away with a full belly and a balanced meal? Everybody brings something and goes away with more.
We all have skills, ideas, objects, smiles, talents, friendship, excitement, discussions, and many other things to share. If we bring them all together at the Really Really Free Market, we can provide more balanced and full lives for everyone. As a community we have many more resources than we do as individuals. If we share our resources we won't need to buy as many new ones. This uses fewer of the Earth's resources, and fewer of our working hours, leaving us more time to devote to ourselves and our communities. Would we all work forty hours a week at one job if we didn't feel we had to? What if instead we worked at improving our individual skills and talents and shared them with each other? We would all spend more time doing things we enjoyed. The Really Really Free Market is an attempt to put these ideas into practice for four hours every month and then spread the seeds everywhere - share, share, share.
Please help us keep the Really Really Free Market a 100% FREE and non-commercial event. Once a month, let's come together and forget about trading, bartering and money. Leave the business cards at home and remember the joy of giving for the sake of giving. Help us keep Art SF clean. If no one takes what you brought, please bring it home with you.

Mon Aug 27 Eve of FULL MOON and FULL LUNAR ECLIPSE
Dark Side Of The Moon Poetry Slam and Pink Ffloyd Pajama Party Monday, 10 pm to 5 am
Come out, come out and express your wildly creative muse with Silicon Village for a poetry slam, dance party and lunar ritual in celebration of the full lunar eclipse. Gather at the HotD stage and Coyote Bar on the Silicon Village Plaza at 10 pm to wax poetic. At midnight we gather on art cars and bikes in front of the SV Archway for a convoy to the trash fence, where we'll hook up with the Playa-wide dance party. Noise permitting, we break at the apex of the eclipse for a moon celebration and ritual, led by the Temple of All Gods. Wear your pajamas to bounce and boogie on our furry air-mattresses.

There is going to be a total lunar eclipse on the night of the 27th of
August and the very early morning of August 28th. It should start about
11:00 to 12:00 PM on the 27th and end about 3:AM on the 28th. We will be

Sep 8 + 9 Bay Area Pet Fair and Adoption @ Marin Center, San Rafael
http://www.bayareapetfair.com 20 North San Pedro Drive.
The Bay Area Pet Fair and Adoptathon is coming up in one month. Non-
profits get a free table (but must donate two hours of volunteer time
to the Fair), perhaps you can get a non-profit to let you show some of
your cats with theirs...or maybe if you tell them you are working on
your non-profit status they will let you participate. I was there last
year with Mickaboo and the event was very well-attended.
The web site for the event is:

SEP 21 Fall Equinox

9.21 Reverse Trick-or-Treat Woo Hoo! The SFShenanigans crew is up to it yet again!
We are going to be dressing up in our best "classic" Halloween costumes, carryin' around and givin' out candy to riders on the BART trains.
You are invited to come Treat-or-Tricking with us at 6PM on Saturday July 21st!
We will be meeting on the BART platform at Civic Center station, on the end closest to the Embarcadero. Bring you, your friends, your costumes, and candy to give out to all the good little (or big) girls and boys on the BART trains!
We'll Treat-or-Trick until our candy supplies give out. After that, knowing us, we're gonna end up at a bar.
PS. If you happen to find the mother-lode of cheap candy in the city, send us an email: MasterNaught @ gmail.com

Justice Joseph Story, Constitution of the United States, Justice Potter Stewart

"This provision (the 4th Amendment)
speaks for itself.
Its plain object is to secure
the perfect enjoyment of that
great right of the common law,
that a man's house
shall be his own castle,
privileged against
all civil and military intrusion."
-- Justice Joseph Story

"No person shall be held to answer for a capital, or otherwise
infamous crime, unless on a presentment or indictment of a Grand Jury...
nor shall any person be subject for the same offense to be twice
put in jeopardy of life or limb, nor shall be compelled in any Criminal
Case to be a witness against himself, not be deprived of life, liberty,
or property, without due process of law, nor shall private property
be taken for public use, without just compensation."

At the very core stands
the right of a man
to retreat into his own home
and there be free
from unreasonable
governmental intrusion."
