Introduction to Permaculture — Come find out about using permaculture principles in your garden in this introductory class - great for beginners and intermediate permaculture designers. We'll cover the philosophy, ethics, and principles of permaculture. With a working permaculture garden tour. The class is taught by Christopher Shein. Christopher runs Wildheart Gardens, an edible & native permaculture nursery, design and landscaping business in Oakland. He teaches at Merritt College, and helps run other urban agriculture projects. Watershed Poetry Festival — Join former US Poet Laureate Robert Hass, Poetry Flash, the Ecology Center/Berkeley Farmers' Market, and Ecocity Builders at the twelfth annual Watershed Poetry Festival. Since 1996, thousands have gathered together with environmental and literary groups to celebrate writers, nature, and community. Along with Robert Hass, this year's featured writers include poets Michael McClure and Sandra Alcosser and cultural historian Rebecca Solnit. Also performing will be poet and eco-educator Chris Olander, poet and naturalist Maya Khosla, and youth poets from California Poets in the Schools and River of Words. Music is provided by Smooth Toad with G.P. Skratz, Andy Dinsmore, and Bob Ernst. Eco updates will be provided by Kirk Lumpkin from the Ecology Center and Kirstin Miller from Ecocity Builders. Jazzy Tomatoes at the Saturday Berkeley Farmers' Market — Jazzy Tomatoes-the third event in a series celebrating 20 years of the Ecology Center's Berkeley Farmers' Markets includes a Downtown Berkeley Jazz Festival Concert (10:30am-2:30pm) featuring headliner Mike Marshall with Brazilian pianist Jovino Santos Neto and delicious tomato dishes by Venus Restaurant (served noon-3pm, sales benefit the Ecology Center). Program Description: Downtown Berkeley Jazz Festival Concert with the Addison Street Band: A tribute to Steely Dan!: 10:30-11:15am, featuring multiple vocalists, guitars, keyboards, percussion, tenor saxophone, trumpet, bass, and drums. Kaz George: 11:30am-12:30pm, high-energy modern jazz with some of the finest high school age jazz musicians in the country. Kaz George, saxophone; Savannah Harris, drums, Danny Mertens, piano; Jonathan Stein, bass; and Ariel Vento, trumpet. Mike Marshall and Jovino Santos Neto: 1-2:30pm, Mike Marshall is one of the world's most accomplished and versatile acoustic musicians, a master of mandolin, guitar, and violin whose playing is as imaginative and adventurous as it is technically thrilling. Able to swing gracefully from jazz to classical to bluegrass to Latin styles, he puts his stamp on everything he plays with an unusually potent blend of intellect and emotion, a combination of musical skill and instinct rare in the world of American vernacular instrumentalists. The barriers between classical, jazz, and indigenous Brazilian music are obscured by Rio de Janeiro-born and Seattle-based pianist, flutist, composer, producer, and arranger Jovino Santos Neto. A member of Hermeto Pascoal's legendary band from 1977 to 1992. It is cubicle-style office space in a light, airy, open office in the same building the Ecology Center occupies. Space fits two desks. Planning for the Centennial of Berkeley's Parks Celebration — Activists and affiliates of Berkeley Partners for Parks are requested to participate in the Centennial of Berkeley's Parks Celebration (8/25/07 through 10/7/07) by including their paths, creek, community garden, and/or park in this to-be-defined calendar of events. BPFP and the City of Berkeley are co-sponsoring a month+ of grassroots events in Berkeley's public outdoor places! The Centennial will kick-off with a city-wide fair to honor 100 years of our first City Park -- San Pablo Park, to be hosted by the San Pablo Park Neighborhood Council. Art Exhibit: "Yosemite: Art of an American Icon" — Organized by the Museum of the American West, Autry National Center, in Los Angeles, the exhibition looks at Yosemite's changing visual identity and cultural role as a national and international destination, and the response by artists to its transition from an ideal of wilderness to a commercial and often congested venue. Film Fest: "Eco-Amok! An Inconvenient Film Fest" — The inconvenient truth is this: cinema has seen it coming for years. How else to account for the black-and-white bestiary that brought us ants the size of SUVs and buffed-up behemoths rising from the ocean floor? Or the more colorful contributions, like a grizzled bear as big as a phone booth, militarized piranhas with excited incisors, or a man-plant with its roots in horror? These are the queer consequences of messing with Mother Nature. From the fearsome fifties right up to the carbon-coughing present, cinema has ogled the aftereffects of ecological abuse and genetic jerry-rigging. Eco-Amok! takes on this prescient patch of filmdom to relish the monstrosities, as well as considering the causes for consternation. Whether the anxiety arises from rogue radiation, environmental spoliation, or genomic manipulation, a movie can be found to match the menace. There are rarities like Saul Bass's Phase IV, an acute account of ants with larger-than-life intelligence; Jack Cardiff's The Mutations, in which a crazed botanist tries to meld folks and foliage; Michael Lehmann's Meet the Applegates, a tale of terrorist roaches that want to inherit the earth, even if it's radioactive; and Rene Daalder's harrowing Habitat, a greenhouse with effects, in which CGI meets horticultural hell. Summer Day Camp: "This Land is Your Land" — For children ages 5-12. Two camp locations: one at Roberts Regional Park in Oakland and one at Tilden Park in Berkeley. This Land is Your Land Day Camp blends the exciting science and nature studies developed by Sarah Shaffer with art, music, hiking, swimming, and outdoor games. Counselor In Training (CIT) program for campers ages 11-15. Weekly sessions from June 18 through August 31. Theme for June 18-22: Go Green! Time: 9am - 3pm. Cost: $285/wk. Volunteer: Berryland on the Richmond Greenway — Please join the 5% Local Coalition for the August Foodshed Development Day on Saturday as we work together to rebuild a local food system. We will be continuing work on Berryland on the Richmond Greenway between 6th and 7th Streets near Lincoln Elementary in the Iron Triangle. The Richmond Greenway parallels Ohio and Chanslor Streets. Today Berryland is consists of 6 wine barrel planters planted with raspberry bushes.
