Bush Calls for Broader Military Disaster Response Role 16 Sep 2005 The
military will have a broader role in disaster response, based on
aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Dictator Bush said in a nationally televised
address Sept. 15.

Friday morning (power) line By Brian Williams 16 Sep 2005 "And yet last
night, no more than an hour after the President departed, the lights
went out. The entire area was plunged into total darkness again, to
audible groans. It's enough to make some of the folks here who witnessed
it... jump to certain conclusions. It is impossible to over-emphasize the
extent to which this area is under government occupation, and portions
of it under government-enforced lockdown. Police cars rule the streets.
They (along with Humvees, ambulances, fire apparatus, FEMA trucks and
all official-looking SUVs) are generally not stopped at checkpoints and
roadblocks. All other vehicles are subject to long lines and snap
judgments and must PROVE they have vital business inside the vast roped-off
regions here."

Doctor says FEMA ordered him to stop treating hurricane victims 16 Sep
2005 In the midst of administering chest compressions to a dying woman
several days after Hurricane Katrina struck, Dr. Mark N. Perlmutter was
ordered to stop by a federal official because he wasn't registered with
the Federal Emergency Management Agency. "I begged him to let me
continue," said Perlmutter, who left his home and practice as an orthopedic
surgeon in Pennsylvania to come to Louisiana and volunteer to care for
hurricane victims. "People were dying, and I was the only doctor on the
tarmac (at the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport) where
scores of nonresponsive patients lay on stretchers. Two patients died
in front of me."

Katrina aid from Cuba? No thanks, says U.S. 14 Sep 2005 In separate
Washington press briefings, both the White House and State Department
spokesmen this week downplayed the Cuban government's offer to send some
1,600 medics, field hospitals and 83 tons of medical supplies to ease the
humanitarian disaster. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack
asserted last week that the Cuban medical brigade would probably not be
needed since there has been a "robust response from the American medical
community."

Higher-than-expected death toll seen in clustered New Orleans corpses
16 Sep 2005 Tentative optimism that New Orleans' death toll from Katrina
might be far lower than first projected has given way to somber reality
over the past 36 hours as search and rescue squad turn up bodies by the
dozen in the hardest hit areas of the city.

FEMA under fire as delays hit Katrina recovery 16 Sep 2005 The U.S.
agency that made a mess of rescue operations when Hurricane Katrina
ravaged New Orleans and the Gulf Coast now is coming under fire for slow
distribution of aid to storm survivors.

Displaced oil workers get new homes 15 Sep 2005 Compared with many
others forced from their homes by Hurricane Katrina, residents of
Sugarville have comfortable new houses, complete with amenities like soft beds,
DVD players and full refrigerators. St. James, LA "Sugarville" is
actually a huge dirt lot on the grounds of the Royal Dutch Shell Sugarland
Terminal in this southeastern Louisiana town. The "houses" are Fleetwood
Enterprises trailers supplied by the Federal Emergency Management
Agency to house oil workers and their families displaced by the storm that
devastated the U.S. Gulf Coast.

44 oil spills found in southeast Louisiana --Largest is nearly 4
million gallons, most big ones are on Mississippi River 16 Sep 2005 More than
500 specialists are working to clean up 44 oil spills ranging from
several hundred gallons to nearly 4 million gallons, the U.S. Coast Guard
said in an assessment that goes far beyond initial reports of just two
significant spills.

Gov't Increases Medicare Premiums Again 16 Sep 2005 Senior citizens and
the disabled will have to pay a monthly Medicare premium of $88.50 next
year for doctor's visits and other services. The $10.30 increase
amounts to 13.2 percent. [Boy, that should be a real *help* to the poor
people in the Gulf Coast! ***NOT.***]

Not the New Deal By Paul Krugman 16 Sep 2005 "It's a given that the
Bush administration, which tried to turn Iraq into a laboratory for
conservative economic policies, will try the same thing on the Gulf Coast.
The Heritage Foundation, which has surely been helping Karl Rove develop
the administration's recovery plan, has already published a manifesto
on post-Katrina policy. It calls for waivers on environmental rules, the
elimination of capital gains taxes and the private ownership of public
school buildings in the disaster areas... There's every reason to
believe the reconstruction of the Gulf Coast, like the failed reconstruction
of Iraq, will be deeply marred by cronyism and corruption."

Follow the money for the real story By Molly Ivins "...[T]he first
winner out of the gate on Katrina is Halliburton Co., whose deserving
subsidiary Kellogg, Brown and Root already has been granted a $29.8 million
contract for cleanup work in the wake of Katrina... Since Joe Allbaugh,
who was Bush's campaign manager in 2000, announced that he was leaving
FEMA in December 2002, it appears he has been busy making sure
reconstruction contracts in Iraq go to companies that give generously to the
Republican Party."

Katrina already costing the federal government tens of billions of
dollars, more than 8 in 10 Americans are very or somewhat concerned that
the $5 billion being spent each month on the war in Iraq is draining away
money that could be used in the United States, according to the latest
New York Times/CBS News poll.

U.S. rejects Syrian statement, threatens "serious consequences" 16 Sep

President Hugo Chavez took Dictator Bush to task in front of a global summit
for waging war in Iraq without U.N. consent and won rousing applause for
his critique. "There were never weapons of mass destruction but Iraq
was bombed, and over U.N. objections, (it was) occupied and continues
being occupied," Chavez said.

Ex-Taliban officials, warlords on Afghan ballot 16 Sep 2005 The
presence of warlords and ex-Taliban officials on the ballot when Afghans vote

already done that.]

MPs may force retreat by Clarke --Cross-party concern over detention
and definition --Compromise expected to avert Commons revolt 17 Sep 2005
Charles Clarke, the home secretary, is braced to make further
concessions on his latest anti[pro]-terrorism bill in the face of guaranteed
resistance to its most sensitive clauses from MPs and peers who are
determined to amend or - if necessary - defeat it... The shadow home
secretary, David Davis, said he was also keen to defend the ancient Magna Carta
privilege of habeas corpus - that a prisoner be brought to court
quickly, not held for months on end.

Backlash will scupper anti-terrorism Bill in the Lords, say critics 17
Sep 2005 A legal and political backlash was growing last night against
the Government's new anti[pro]-terrorism laws, which include provision
for jail for "glorifying" terrorists. [Glorifying terrorists? Oh. I
guess Karl Rove and the executive producers of Faux News would be locked
up for a very long time.]

Hurricane Katrina rescue operation. "Instead of pushing the funding up, they

I think Bush is just about the poorest president [sic] we've ever had.
You'd have to go back before I was born to find a worse one."

Virtual martial law in the Big Easy By Peter Fimrite 08 Sep 2005 "I did
not actually count the number of automatic weapons pointed at me, but
there were at least five, and I was certain they were all locked and
loaded, or whatever that military phrase is signifying that a gun is ready
to blow a hole in somebody. "Step out!" commanded the black-helmeted
man in the middle of what appeared to be a tactical formation. He was
pointing a laser-like flashlight attached to his machine gun at me...
There are National Guard, police and Army checkpoints every few blocks.
SWAT teams, soldiers and military squads from as far away as Puerto Rico
patrol the downtown streets, stopping anyone they see... It is
essentially martial law in the Big Easy and being outside without a press pass
can be dangerous, if not deadly. Hearst Corp. hired six armed military
contractors, led by former Navy SEAL Chris White, to protect the house
and journalists, presumably from looters, but also from arrest by police
or the military." [A must read]
