GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION JANUARY 26, 2008 Register your action at: http://www.wsf2008.net
The Peoples Movement Assembly of the US Social Forum invites you to join the people of the world for a GLOBAL DAY OF ACTION

Civil Rights Panel and Community Speak-Out FREE Open to public
Jan 26 12pm to 2pm 1730 Oregon Street (below MLK Jr. Way) Berkeley
Co-Sponsored by Copwatch & Disabled People Outside Project
PUBLIC FORUM UNITES LOCAL ACTIVISTS
As the Berkeley City Council prepares to consider a controversial report on "Evidence Theft Issues within the Berkeley Police Department", community activists are organizing a public forum to increase awareness about the reports findings. The Berkeley City Council is scheduled to vote on the report at their meeting on January 29th. If adopted, the report would require many corrective actions, including disclosure (after two years of stalling) of how much drugs were actually stolen in the 2006 drug scandal and other measures to prevent such theft in the future.
Although Chief Hambleton has said that he believes that it would be too costly to determine how much drug evidence was stolen, some activists believe it is crucial information that could indicate whether other cops were involved.
Concerned about an overall shift in the political climate of Berkeley that includes repeated violations of the Public Records Act, discriminatory laws and enforcement against youth of color and homeless people, and the crippling of the city’s Police Review Commission, activists are joining forces to demand that Berkeley City government restore the city’s reputation for defending civil rights and open government. Speakers Include:
Kris Worthington, Berkeley City Council member
Osha Neumann, Attorney and former Police Review Commissioner
Melvin Dixon, Commemoration Committee for the Black Panther Party
Andrea Prichett, Copwatch, Subcommittee on Evidence Theft Issues
Mike Diehl, Activist and advocate for homeless rights
James Chanin, Attorney, former Police Review Commissioner

Our resources include dance, rhythmic step routines, affirmational cheers, cheer-tahn (call and response), improvisation and shamani-quasi healings. All current members of the Cheerleaders work in the healing arts, and have a particular gift for inspiring others in a unique way. Wed Jan 30 7pm Tuolumne River Presentation (Palo Alto)
Please join Peter Drekmeier, Tuolumne River Trust's Bay Area Program Director, for a presentation in Palo Alto on the Tuolumne River and our efforts to protect it:
Tuolumne to the Tap January 30 (Wednesday), 7pm
Located at Acterra, 3921 E. Bayshore Rd., Palo Alto
Directions: http://www.acterra.org/about/locations.html
About the Tuolumne
From its headwaters high in the mountains of Yosemite National Park, the Tuolumne River cascades 162 miles west before joining the San Joaquin River and flowing north into the San Francisco Bay-Delta. Designated a “Wild and Scenic River” in 1984, the Tuolumne offers unparalleled outdoor recreation opportunities, hosting thousands of hikers, whitewater boaters, anglers and family campers each year.
The Tuolumne River is now under threat. Despite dramatic declines in Chinook salmon and steelhead trout, The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission has proposed diverting an additional 25 million gallons of water per day from the River (enough to fill 1,000 swimming pools every day). With more than half of the Tuolumne already diverted for urban and agricultural uses, it’s time to focus major attention on water conservation, efficiency and recycling.
