Happy Spring everybody!
Keeping this short, since the rest of this JRS is so long. We've got information about low cost tickets, tickets in general, the 2010 Afterburn report, storage for Burning Man projects near the event site, theme camp layout plans, job opportunities, classes, yet more Burning Man art out in the world, art grantees, fun upcoming events, funding your project, even an ultramarathon ... AUGH! The mind reels. The cherry on top is NK Guy's amazing photo gallery from Burning Man 2010.
One thing we WILL add here is a plug for the Burning Blog ... if you haven't checked in there lately, there's much more to it than news about Black Rock City!! We're really proud of the evolving mix of perspectives and voices from all around our culture, all year long. Check it out:

LOW INCOME & SCHOLARSHIP TICKETS SOLD OUT
We have experienced record demand for Burning Man tickets this year, and demand for our low cost tickets was also high. As a result, our allocation of low income and scholarship tickets are now sold out, and the programs are now closed. Please do not mail in your application if you haven't already. Any applications and payments received after all tickets are awarded will be returned to sender as quickly as possible.
MAIL ORDER AND PENDING LOW INCOME TICKET PROCESSING TIME: We are sorry to report that are we STILL buried in applications - hard to believe for the first time ever, thousands were sent in during the first two weeks! Our small office is chugging along as quickly as possible with great volunteers but the estimated processing time for Low Income and Scholarship applications is probably 8 weeks at this point. Do not fret! No news is good news at this point because we are letting people know immediately if they are not receiving a Low Income or Scholarship ticket. Please hold off on contacting us right now. If you do not hear back within 8 weeks of mailing in your application, send us an email and we will look into things. We thank you in advance for keeping your patience pants on!
More information, and links to buy tickets on our ticket page:

AND SPEAKING OF BURNING MAN TICKETS....
Like we said just now...ticket sales are brisk! Old and new friends alike are announcing their intentions, registering projects, signing up to volunteer...heck, there are almost 200,000 of you Liking Burning Man on Facebook! And yes, tickets are moving quicker than they ever have before.
Wheee, right? Sure, it’s exciting and inspiring, and we're certainly happy for our friends who might have had to sit it out in '09 or '10.... but let's face it: it's important to be careful about how the event grows. The rate of ticket sales affects not only infrastructure and population, but has more nuanced implications to newbie acculturation, community intimacy, and an overall cultural balance.
For whatever reason, early interest this year is like never before, and since we don't do proactive PR, it's hard to say why the spike in interest, or what it means for overall ticket sales for 2011. But we've stated that the final tiers are not unlimited but are "while supplies last" and we are reminding you of that now-- and if we *were* to reach a point of limiting tickets, it would have big implications in such an intensely participatory culture. To be sure, we don't want anyone left out in the cold.
That's why y'all JRS readers, our core community of peeps, will be first to hear about changes and updates to ticket availability. Keep your eyes peeled here! No changes are planned just yet, but we will say that as things look today, if you're on the fence (you know what we mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a6WAi0ssLGs) then this is your official hint that it would be wise to begin considering which side of the fence you and your co-conspirators plan to come down on in the end.
And hey, perhaps we all want to make a pact to ease up just a wee bit on the telling everyone we meet that they "just HAVE to go to Burning Man!!!!" ...wait, wait, ok, maybe not that drastic -- you always bring such nice friends. But geez, 200,000 Likes is, like, a lot of Likes.
Rites of Passage here we come!

BURNING MAN'S 2010 AFTERBURN REPORT
It's here! The Afterburn is Burning Man's annual report, detailing the events and activities that went into making Burning Man 2010 happen, as well as documenting our efforts to spread Burning Man culture around the world.
The staff of the Burning Man Project work very hard to pull these reports together every year (thanks to them!), and we hope you enjoy learning about what this dedicated crew of talented people are doing behind the scenes to forward this incredible project.

BURNING MAN OFFERS NEARBY STORAGE TO ARTISTS AND THEME CAMPS
We are excited to announce a new storage option for Black Rock City projects, intended to help our participants, artists and theme camps with year-round storage near the event site!
Burning Man is offering participants the option to purchase a 20 foot shipping container, to be used for fee-based storage with annual delivery service to and from the event.
The hoped-for goals of this program are to promote cooperation amongst participants to share containers, minimize fuel consumption of repeat overland shipping each year, and improve safety on the highways by reducing the amount of large-scale hauling headed into BRC each year.
This option may also allow participants to build on and improve on previous years endeavors -- leading to grander camps, projects, and creative ideas all around. We look forward to watching how this option might enhance and expand what's possible in Black Rock City!

ANNOUNCING BRAF'S 2011 GRANTEES!
The Grant Committee of the Black Rock Arts Foundation is thrilled to announce the winners of the BRAF 2010 Grant Cycle. BRAF has awarded a total of $55,000 to 12 projects, worldwide (note: remember, BRAF funds artworks in the REST of the world during the rest of the year -- not the funded art you'll see in BRC, listed above! We really are everywhere!)
Our 2011 Grantee projects integrate art and daily life in exciting new ways, each uniquely in their own. Some surprise us with an unexpected, intimate experience with a work of art where you’d least expect it, while others challenge community members to discover themselves as artists and collaborators. These projects range from delightfully playful to quietly contemplative, from fantastically surreal to innovatively practical, but all aim to empower communities through the experience of art, and raise the bar of what public art can achieve.
Read more about these truly inspiring artists and projects at http://www.blackrockarts.org/grants/2011-grant-recipients
Keep an eye on our blog and watch these projects grow at http://blackrockarts.blogspot.com
Love our Grantees? Support BRAF’s Grants to Artists Program by making a donation to BRAF at http://www.blackrockarts.org.

BLACK ROCK SOLAR SEEKING BOOKKEPER / EXECUTIVE ASSISTANT
Black Rock Solar is looking for a full-time Bookkeeper/Executive Assistant for our San Francisco office. Black Rock Solar installs low or no-cost solar systems for non-profits, schools, Native American tribes and rural communities. We also have a strong educational and outreach focus, including promoting solar-powered art. BRS has longstanding ties to the Burning Man event, and currently shares office space in San Francisco with Burning Man. Our installation work is currently in Northern Nevada and we have an office and a construction crew based in Reno.
For more information about this position, visit http://www.blackrocksolar.org

MORE ART FOR RENO - SPIRE OF FIRE
The folks over at the Black Rock Arts Foundation tell us:
"Congratulations, Reno! Thanks to the efforts of BRAF Advisory Board Member Maria Partridge and BRAF Board Member Crimson Rose, the City of Reno has awarded BRAF another grant to bring yet another sensational work of art to our downtown exhibition location.
Look for our next Reno Civic Arts installation, Spire of Fire by Reno artists Steve Atkins and Eric Smith, on display from June 15 - Nov. 15, 2011.
We at BRAF thank the City of Reno for their ongoing support. Their generous grant covers over half the cost of installing Spire of Fire! But we still have a considerable amount of funds to raise to make this project a reality.
To make a donation towards the installation of Spire of Fire, and to read more about this exciting, dramatic work of art, visit http://www.blackrockarts.org/projects/braf-reno "

OH DAMN WE FORGOT PISS CLEAR
As we were listing Burning Man books in the last issue of the JRS, we STUUUPIDLY forgot to include "Burning Man Live", aka the Piss Clear Anthology! So here we are, mentioning it. In case you don't know, Piss Clear used to be the playa's ultimate alternative newspaper (which is to say, absurdly good porta-potty reading material).
Adrian, who is to blame for Piss Clear, bless him, tells us that "Burning Man Live" now comes with a free, unplayafied issue of the new "BRC Weekly," i.e. "I Missed Doing A Playa Newspaper But I Couldn't Call It Piss Clear Because Then The Book Wouldn't Be A Complete Anthology!"
Want it? Yeah you do. Here: http://amzn.to/hN6E97

THE CRUCIBLE OFFERS COURSES IN ELECTRONIC CONTROL OF FLAME EFFECTS
Our friend Steve Young sends us this about a course at The Crucible in Oakland that miiiight just be of interest to Burners. Call us crazy.
"Entry-Level
In this hands-on flame effects and electronics class you will learn how flame effects work, how to design and build them safely and how to use a Arduino microcontroller to create complex fire sequences and interactive behavior, while building your own 'poofer' fire sculpture.
Topics that we will cover include solenoid valves, sensors and programming interactivity. You will also learn how these same techniques can be used with other fluids such as compressed air and hydraulic fluid, often used in robotics and kinetic sculptures. This class is a perfect 'next level' for any artist who wants to control their art in exciting and interactive ways.
There are no prerequisites for this class, though exposure to basic electronics and programming is helpful. A laptop computer is highly recommended but not required. Personal projects are welcomed. You will take home your final project and are welcome to add to it. This is a complementary course to 'Flame Effects for Art'.
Sign up for the Flame Effects for Art class at the same time as this class and receive $40 off Flame Effects for Art.
*Young Adults age 16+ must request approval and register to take this class by phone at 510-444-0919 ext0
Cost: $425.00 (Tuition: $210.00, Studio Fee: $215.00), Members: $404.00"

BURNING MAN ULTRAMARATHON
Yep, the crazy people are doing it again. Perhaps you're one of them? In all seriousness, we love this particular scion of Burning Man's increasingly eclectic culture. They write:
"Second annual running of 50 kilometers in Black Rock City!
We know it's far away, but it's time to start training for Wed, August 31st.....
Get the ultimate high at Burning Man - RUNNERS' HIGH!
Join other runners in the second annual Burning Man ultramarathon. We'll be running 50 kilometers in a looped course around beloved Black Rock City. Run in costume, run in running spandex, run with your heart, run without your mind...however you plan on doing it, come on out!
Start training, and pass the info on to other runners. If you aren't sure if you can do the thing, come on out and try anyway! Many runners did this as a first 50k or got a PR (that's geeky running talk for "Personal Record," or their best time ever!).
It's fun, it's flat, it's fast, it's got great scenery (mountains AND Black Rock City and all its beautiful inhabitants), impromptu cheering squads...
To sign up, or for more info, email Cherie at cherylish@yahoo.com, visit our FB page: http://on.fb.me/hn2OlC or our website: http://sites.google.com/site/burningmanultramarathon/home
If you are attending, please email cherylish@yahoo.com with:
* Name
* Email Address
* Address (off-playa)
* Date of birth & Gender
* Emergency contact info (both off and on playa)
VOLUNTEERS WANTED FOR THE ULTRAMARATHON:
Can't run? Don't want to be bored while watching on your lover/best friend/sister/enemy? Come on and help out - pour water, time runners, hug sweaty runners! Volunteers are eagerly accepted - please email cherylish@yahoo.com to let us know you'd love to help out!

CALL OUT FOR VIDEO FOOTAGE FROM BURNING MAN 2005
Apparently MacGyver couldn't wriggle his way out of this particular conundrum. Heh. He writes:
"Hello Fellow Burners. We need your amazing footage!
We are creating a documentary of the festival in 2005 with footage shot by the participants themselves. Our camp was called The Chain of Thought Video Experiment. We handed out video cameras to fellow burners and told them to shoot something for 30 seconds and pass the camera on to someone else. We acquired thousands of great Burning Man moments this way and have edited them together into a feature documentary. It has turned out great, kind of a day in the life at Burning Man, with so many points of view. The only problem is that some things just were not covered or were captured on the dozens of tapes destroyed by the dust. That can happen on the Playa ;)
So we are putting a call out for any footage that was shot that year by anybody. We are especially in need of footage of the temple burn, Playa art, art cars day and night and people (You can see) at night. But in the spirit of the experiment we will consider anything interesting. If your footage is included we will give you a credit at the end of the movie. For now we are gathering footage from the 2005 festival, however...
Because the concept of a participant captured film has worked so well, we will put out a second call for footage and create documentaries of other years in the same way. Kind of a Community Camera Time Machine. So if you have great footage from other years, stand by for the next announcement!
We are anticipating showing the film in festivals and eventually distributing it. So if you want to send footage that includes recognizable individual people, and your camera was only registered for personal use, you will need to have model releases or have the ability to get them.
If you would like to be involved, contact me at communitycamerabm@gmail.com and we will get to work on including your footage in this great documentary.
Thanks and see you on the Playa!
Mike Deprez - Aka MacGyver"

FEED THE ARTISTS - FROM THE PLAYA TO THE REAL WORLD
Our friend Keith over at Feed the Artists (FtA) writes:
"Feed the Artists is a communal art grant that enriches Burner community ties through food gifting. The program has literally fed thousands of artists since 2007, and inspired radical collaboration amongst diverse groups of Burners. FtA has grown quickly at Burning Man, as many have come to embrace the program’s four primary goals:
1. To support artists in the Burning Man community
2. To create healthy and meaningful interactions between artists, theme camps, and their peers through bonding, collaborating, and sharing resources for the benefit of the entire community: Radical Collaboration.
3. To elevate the role of food on the playa to an art form.
4. To allow the power of these shared values to generate a self-sustaining tradition at Burning Man, then the Regional Burns, and then to the World beyond.
Over 1500 artists were fed in 2010 by over 50 theme camps, who stepped up and participated in the program.
For 2011, FtA will evolve by:
1. spreading its wings to encompass the Regional Burns,
2. facilitating more theme camp participation,
3. facilitating more FtA meals throughout Burn week, and
4. promoting more mobile food gifting.
The keys to accomplishing this will be:
1. raising the funds necessary to modify our online reservations system to accommodate multiple events, and cover our other expenses (our first Kickstarter campaign of 2011 has already begun)
2. recruiting of volunteers with website design and maintenance skills and print graphics skills so we can modify our website and produce the materials necessary to make this transition happen smoothly, and
3. making sure all the Regional Event teams are aware of FtA and how they can use it to augment the sense of community that is developed at their events (we’ll have a table at the upcoming Convectional Caucus!).
We've refined a great system, have a clear plan and vision, and have eager crew members that want to make it as easy as possible for theme camps to feed artists. What we need now from the Burner community at large, in order to reach our goals, is:
1. Donations to our Kickstarter campaign (http://kck.st/epFbKa)
2. Volunteers with graphics & web design/build experience
3. Contact with Theme Camps who are interested in participating in 2011, and
4. Contact with Regional Burns who would like to host their own FtA programs
Through the support of our friends at the Burning Man Project and everyone in the broader Burning Man community, we know that we can continue to take the FtA program from strength to strength, and bring a program that was born and incubated at Burning Man out to the default world! Join us, and help us in our noble quest! It all starts at our website: http://www.feedtheartists.net
