Did you see that table of contents? Wow.
We're well on our way to the playa now, folks! Following the blog? See what's happening TODAY in Black Rock City as we prepare for your arrival.
http://blog.burningman.com/category/building-brc/
About this time of year, people inevitably ask the same questions over and over, so here you go:
Q: How's the playa surface?
A: Generally really good ... there are a couple playa serpents and some soft spots around, but there's also lots of great, well-packed playa. But the thing is, the spot where the event is held is large and varied. There are rough spots and there are some smooth spots.
Q: Will it be dusty?
A: Yes.
It's always dusty, no matter what. Plan for dust. Goggles, dust masks, the whole shebang. There is never Not Dust, and although most of the time things are pretty clear, you should expect at least the briefest few moments of whiteout conditions from time to time. Yep. You read the Survival Guide, right? http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/
Q: What's the weather like?
A: See for yourself: http://bit.ly/na4roi (of course, it can change in an instant, especially in the high desert)
Q: What's the weather forecast?
A: Here you go: http://bit.ly/pcpCd3
The Man burns in 16 days people! Holy moly!!!!!

BRING AN FM RADIO WITH YOU TO THE PLAYA FOR BMIR
Burning Man Information Radio, BMIR 94.5 FM reminds you to bring an FM radio with you to the playa. BMIR is the official radio station of Burning Man and is your source for a wide variety of music, news, weather info, artists interviews, event and theme camp announcements as well s official announcements from Burning Man and much more. It's also where you tune in the event of an emergency or severe weather for official instructions.
BMIR is on the air right now, and you can listen at http://www.shoutingfire.com or http://www.bmir.org but they will begin broadcasting live from the playa, 24/7 early on the afternoon of Wednesday 8/24. Use this link to launch it on your mobile device during your drive http://bmir-ice.streamguys.com/live.m3u
Tune in for their pre-gate show on Sunday night starting at 6PM.
Want to promote your camps events? The BMIR Production Office is open every day during the event from 12N to 4PM. Come by and they'll help you create a recorded promo or you can drop off something that you have pre-recorded. BMIR is right in Center Camp. Here's a map with BMIR marked http://tinyurl.com/3l3y5fd
On Burn nights BMIR has the latest official information should there be any delays due to weather. When it comes time to leave BRC tune in to BMIR for updated Exodus info. They will tell you when it's a good time to leave BRC, info on pulsing and how long you can expect to be in line before you hit the pavement.
Now if you just can't make it to the playa this year, tune in to BMIR on the internet.
See you in the desert!

BE AWARE OF TICKET SCAMS
This week we got a few verifiable reports of Burning Man ticket scams and counterfeits happening from nefarious ne'er-do-wells, and we want everybody to be aware of them. If you're looking to buy tickets from a third party, please read this, and pass it on to friends who are doing the same:

DO NOT MESS WITH YOUR EARLY ARRIVAL PASS
The Burning Man Placement team writes:
"This message is specifically intended for the recipients of Early Arrival Bar Code Passes:
We have seen an increase in requests for Early Arrival Bar Codes passes and we are seeing instances where they are being treated as collateral and being traded, sold or given away. In the past, projects have been, well, er, "burned" by folks from who traded a promise of setup labor in exchange for an early arrival pass, and then left the project high and dry, short of labor and out of passes. Don't go there.
This year the early arrival bar codes passes will reflect the name of your department, art project, or the name of your Theme Camp.
The early arrival bar code passes are not transferable.
This year all individuals arriving early will be expected to have their torn ticket and their early arrival bar code pass with them at all times until the event begins, to confirm your authorized early presence on playa.
If we discover misuse of the early arrival bar codes, the associated batch of early arrival bar codes can be voided for that project and early arrival will be denied, placement voided and this will be documented in our system for future reference. Trading, selling or giving away your projects early arrival bar code pass(es) is not acceptable. Please do not do it."
And yeah, ouch.

D.A.'S PLAYA RESTORATION QUICK TIP OF THE WEEK #4- MAGNET SWEEPERS
D.A. writes:
"Hey Gang! Keep Black Rock City beautiful! Use a magnet sweeper when picking up metal fasteners and debris off of the playa! Why be on your hands and knees picking up all those nails and screws from tear-down and metal shavings that come from welding and grinding when you can simply roll a magnetic sweeper over your targeted areas and have it do the work for you.
http://moopmap.blogspot.com/2009/07/moop-method-use-magnet-sweeper-for.html
Thanks for leaving no trace:) see you on the playa!

JUNGO ROAD DRIVING ADVISORY
We missed this one in the Transportation edition.
Those of you driving to Gerlach through Humboldt County, please be advised: do not take JUNGO ROAD. Jungo Road is the dirt road from Winnemucca to Gerlach, also known as "High Road", and as Nevada Road #2048.
Humboldt Roads and Service have asked us to advise you not to take this road unless you want to get stuck. The road is dirt, cared for only once a year (in early spring) and is a notorious RV/Car trap. Please take other roads that are better cared for and paved, such as I-80w through Winnemucca. From Winnemucca, drive on I-80w for 132 miles, then you will see signs for Wadsworth/Pyramid Lake. Take a right onto Highway 447 and travel 68 miles north until reaching Gerlach. It will take you 3.5 hours without traffic, but just imagine how much time a busted flat on JUNGO will cost you. Travel safe! I-80 will get you to the playa!

I-80 DESIGN-BUILD TRAFFIC CONTROL ALERT
Stop on Red - Go on Green
Construction ramp signals will be operational on the on-ramps at the locations below as part of the Nevada Department of Transportation’s $72 million I-80 Design-Build Project from Robb Drive to Vista Blvd. beginning Wednesday, July 6, 2011 during peak hour commutes.
• Keystone Ave. to I-80 eastbound on-ramp
• Center St. to I-80 eastbound on-ramp
• Wells Ave. to I-80 eastbound on-ramp
The construction ramp signals are a basic traffic signal consisting of only a red and green light (no yellow). They will be operational during peak hours and other times as needed. All cars stop on a red light, and one car at a time is released per green light and allowed to enter I-80.

Ah! We were looking for these, and couldn't find them. Luckily, Steven Silverman pointed us in the right direction. These videos are SUPER VALUABLE to watch to learn how to interact with law enforcement and protect your rights. WATCH THEM! He writes:

BURNING MAN EXHIBIT IN THE RENO AIRPORT
Thanks to the hard work of Reno-based friend-of-the-arts Maria Partridge, and Patrick Ford of BMHQ, folks traveling through the Reno Airport will be given a hearty welcome (or parting farewell) by an exhibit about Burning Man! The exhibit photographically follows Burning Man from its early days on Baker Beach all the way through Black Rock City 2010. You'll also be able to check out playa artifacts, tickets, news, and films throughout our 25-year history. A special surprise also awaits you at baggage claim.
Enjoy!

TIME TO BURN IPHONE APP NOW AVAILABLE
Terry writes:
"The 2011 version of the 'Time To Burn' app is now live in the Apple app store. It is my gift to the burner community and is absolutely free. The app includes the event database so that it can be used to search and browse through the events even while on the playa, in Airplane mode.
Playa dust is extremely hard on electronics. If you bring an iPhone/iPad/iTouch to the playa keep it sealed in a ziplock bag at all times!
What's new in this version:
*The event database has been updated for 2011, and includes over 3000 events spread over the week. Search and browse in a variety of ways: Looking for a gifted breakfast on Tuesday? Easy! Want to browse just the classes and workshops? Now you can!
*The playa locations are now included for 80% of the events. (Due to camps not being at known locations before the event, this is as good as it gets!)
*The app can now add events into your personal calendar for you, with automatic alerts/reminders. Don't miss that fabulous Tutu Tea Party at Misfit Circus because you were distracted by HeeBeeGeeBee Healers!
*An update system has been built into the app, to allow me to update the app's internal event database very close to the burn. You will find the 'update now' button in the 'About' section of the app.
*Special search shortcuts to find LGBT events, and other events recommended by me and my friends."

"www.Burningwindow.com has been updated to include 2011 camps. Over 300 websites are now included in the window. The purpose of the website is simple... burningwindow.com frames our Black Rock City community without advertising and provides a search engine that searches only the websites in the frame without advertisements in the results. Please submit your BRC links through the burningwindow.com website.

ROCKSTAR LIBRARIAN'S 2011 BURNING MAN MUSIC GUIDE
Rockstar Librarian Kate is awesome. And lucky for us, she's back. She writes:
"Share it & Shake It!
I've spent the summer researching, emailing, Facecracking and, yes, down right stalking as many of the sound camps as I can to get their line ups to create this year's guide to the sweetest beats on the playa.
The 2011 Burning Man Music Guide will be available for download on Tuesday, August 23rd. I'll bring hard copies to give away again this year. If you'd like to donate toward the printing costs, you can do so at http://tinyurl.com/4ydkpvn
"Like" my Rockstar Librarian Fan Page now to get instant access to the guide when it goes live and a few extra treats along the way, too.

In other Rockstar Librarian news...
This year, I will co-host BMIR's pre-gate opening radio show! Listen Sunday, August 28th, starting at 6pm. Whether you're waiting in traffic or home in your living room, listen to live interviews with camp gurus and DJs from Hookahdome, Rites of Zion, Opulent Temple, Distrikt, Nexus and Osiris as well as some surprises, too!
Dying for a taste of the music hitting the playa this year?
Visit my blog to download music podcasts and sets from many of this year's sound camp DJs to listen to on your trip Home.

BRAD TITZER IS BIKING TO BURNING MAN - FROM KENTUCKY
This is pretty cool (in the ambitiously insane category). PopRocks writes:
"Brad Titzer, one of our Salon Soleil campmates, is biking to Burning Man. From Louisville, Kentucky. For realz!
2200 miles all-in-all...Kentucky-> Indiana-> Illinois-> Missouri-> Kansas-> Colorado-> Utah-> Nevada-> HOME
I believe he is currently in Missouri (or maybe Kansas). His planned arrival date is Monday or Tuesday, and we'd love it if all the citizens of BRC would give him a big "Huzzah!" as he bikes triumphantly into the city.
Best,
PopRocks

CENTER CAMP CAFE COFFEE SHOP WANTS YOU!
The Coffee Shop in Center Camp Cafe is still accepting volunteers of all kinds! We really take Radical Inclusion to heart and, if you're willing to work with us, we'de like to find you a volunteer position for you. There's really nothing like the hustle of running through the lines, so that people don't have to wait so long and nearly every position that we have is a member of a smaller team and a member of a bigger team, too! So, you get to not just meet a few new people, but work with them and, well... That just creates a special bond. We're a unique team, because of these things and we'd really like you to join us---because what we're about, at our very core, is creating a community space, where everyone is welcome. We'd like you to feel welcome, too. Please take this opportunity to join us behind the counters.
Roles:
The counter is staffed with cashiers, experienced baristas, runners, brewers and a huge range of little things that need doing; Cashiers work it at the counter, taking orders & making change. Baristas *must* have prior experience and be able to make espressos, lattes, & cappuccinos in all their many variations on a standard machine. Runners keep things running smooth behind the counter, filling ice coolers (yes! Getting ice out of the ice truck at noon in the desert!), pouring the cold drinks (lemonade, ice chai or coffee), and keeping your barista stocked. Every role has it’s benefits and every role is crucial to the café! Do whatever you feel called to do!
Hours:
We are open 24/7 throughout the event, from 3pm Monday, August 29th, through 3pm Monday, September 5th. The coffee shop is staffed in four hour shifts that start at 7, 11, & 3 around the clock - that’s both AM and PM. So whether you’re an early riser, or a night owl, we’ve got something for you!
Contact:
We'd love to schedule you up for some shifts in our café! Please keep in mind that the late night shifts are always the hardest for us to fill, so if you're up for it please take one of those on. They're lots of fun! Watching the sunrise from behind the coffee shop counter is nothing short of bliss! (Especially the mornings after a good burn...)
So what we need from you is simply send a message stating that you want to work, to Xander, our Volunteer Scheduler at xander@burningman.com).
Tickets:
We do not have any tickets to give out to even the best volunteers. We're sorry. We would love to give tickets to everyone (really, we would) but we do not have any. Please do not ask. It makes us sad when we have to say NO, because so much of what we love about what we do is saying YES.

LITHUANIAN BURNERS INVITE YOU TO PARTICIPATE
Check this out ...
"We, the Blukis Camp, a group of Lithuania Burners, artists, and performers invite you to participate in the filming of our documentary! We’ll be carrying out a Pagan ritual from Lithuania and other Indo-European countries of dragging a Blukis—a huge tree stump, symbolic of underworld spirits--through the various communities of Black Rock City in a symbolic gesture to free the sun. We’ll then burn the Blukis stump at the end of Burning Man. We hope to drag the huge (one passenger seated) tree stump (on wheels) through the Playa and various theme camps, role-playing in the spirit of the ritual, sharing its magic with others, while filming participants who would agree to take part in our performance. We also welcome you to join us at Blukis - Burning Stump camp (located on 7:00&Coming Out).
By dragging the stump, participants symbolically welcome the new light, burn their fears and emotional baggage, and are, in a sense, reborn through this ritual. If you and your theme camp would like to participate in the ritual and in the creation of our documentary, please complete this short survey so we know how to find you on the playa: http://tinyurl.com/blukisritual.
SEE YOU IN THE DUST!!
Blukis - Burning Stump Camp Team"

BRC POST INTERNATIONAL POST OFFICE DELIVERS PLAYAGRAMS
The Postgoddess writes:
"The BRCPO 2.Oh in The Black Rock City International Post Office Village, 9:00 Plaza, wants everyone to send E-Mail Playagrams!
Send messages to your friends, enemies, campmates, family and even strangers at Burning Man. Follow the directions at http://brcpo2oh.weebly.com/e-mail-playagrams.html and we, the hard working Posties of the BRCPO 2.Oh, will tirelessly comb Black Rock City to find your dusty Burner loved/hated one and deliver your carefully planned, 120 character, text message sized e-mail playagram! Send your message by Tuesday, August 30th, at 11:00PM PST and send the best playa gift you can send without ordering an O-gram directly from our camp in the 9:00 Plaza. (Which we highly recommend.) If you want to be more certain your e-mail playagram is received, you should suggest to them that they swing by the BRCIPOV (across 9:00 from Ice-9 in the 9:00 Plaza) for their gift from you. Please note that E-Mail Playagrams should absolutely not be used to convey urgent or emergency messages. The BRCPO 2.Oh cannot guarantee delivery. E-mail Playagrams are for entertainment purposes only, mostly our own, but if you or your recipient have fun that that's cool too.
In addition to E-Mail Playagrams, patented O-Grams and good ol' fashioned playa mail, the BRCIPOV also has Ritual Delivery Services, Eurotrash, The Portrait Passage post card making, a very special events USPS cancelation stamp for all off-playa mail and more. Check out all the ways you can go Postal at http://brcpo2oh.weebly.com/participate.html.
Looking forward to dusty stampalicious fun!

The Postgoddess

THE BLACK ROCK BEACON SEEKS VOLUNTEERS TO HELP WITH THE PAPER
Mitchell writes:
"The Black Rock Beacon Is Back!
The Black Rock Beacon is proud to announce its lucky 7th year serving the Playa with tasty porcions of news, views, and bacon-related tidbits to inform and enliven your Rites of Passage at Black Rock City. We're aiming to produce five issues of our daily newspaper this year, full of real news, occasionally satiric views, and lots of obscure references to the gateway meat.
We’re looking for a few good volunteers to round out our staff: if you write, edit, draw, do (computer) layout, take pictures, want to deliver the paper and get enormous schwag opportunities, or help us run the machinery that makes it all possible, please let us know by email before the event or by dropping by for our 10:30 a.m. meetings on the Playa in our conveniently located digs at 1:30 & the Inner Circle of Center Camp, right across from the Cafe.
Contact information is on our website at www.blackrockbeacon.org, where you can also leave a donation if you like our newspaper and want to support our work.

CRITICAL TITS RIDES AGAIN!
Liz writes:
"She is 16, she is beautiful and she is yours. For the 16th year, women will ride from the Man at 4:00 on Friday. This is your Rite of Passage, your coming of age, YOUR RIDE. Join us on our raucous, topless joyride around the playa - from the Man to the Woman (TRUTH IS BEAUTY). At the end of the ride, honor yourselves and your sisters in a simple ritual of celebration and gratitude for the feminine.
It takes the whole community to create Critical Tits, the largest performance art piece on the playa.
Participate:
Ride with thousands of your sisters!!!
Volunteer:
We need water providers and help with parking (contact us: info2011@criticaltits.com) and we need big hearts and grounded spirits to hold the space for the ritual at the end of the ride.
Art cars:
Please embrace the ritual and allow our chants to soar without your music. It's only an hour.
Put down your camera
Be part of the ritual:
Men, and non-riding women, bring your heart to hold the sacred space where you stand with your back to the ritual and your heart to the open playa while you invite others to participate in honoring and celebrating women. Non-riders, gather at the Woman at 3:45 on Friday in your finest white and silver playa attire. Honor and appreciate with your sisters and brothers.
We love you and cannot wait for our sweet 16 ride. "

BREAK DANCERS, MCEES AND GRAFFITI ARTISTS WANTED!

"We've decided it is time to bring a little bit of classic hip hop to the playa this year. Rapper's Delight is a classic (80s-90s) hip hop theme camp and bar where we'll be celebrating the four pillars of hip hop: djing, mcing, break dancing, and graffiti art. All week long we'll have a graffiti wall where you can paint, and if you are feelin' fresh you can drop some rhymes. We'll also have a pro break dancing floor, so those of you ready to rock had better bring your best moves. We'll be hosting a rap battle on Wednesday night, and a break dancing battle on Friday night, so if you'd like to participate, come on by!
If you'd like to do a performance at our camp, email us, we'd be glad to have you. Also feel free to email us with questions, or just general enthusiasm, and check our Facebook page for updates on the camp. We'll be at the 4:30 Plaza - hope to see you there!

FIRST-DEGREE BURNS: TRANSMISSIONS FROM THE PLAYA
Arthur writes:
"Arthur Graham has launched 40 transmitter books on a reconnaissance mission to the fiery playa planet! With the goal of establishing contact between the alien species inhabiting Black Rock City and the default world, his hope is to collect as many transmissions as possible during the week of the 2011 event. So be on the lookout for those black & yellow composition pads orbiting around the man -- Your stories, quotes, questions, comments, jokes, recipes, and doodlings are the data he is after!
How many transmitters will make the rigorous journey back to the default world with their messages intact? How many will regrettably burn up before re-entry? There is simply no way to know.... Only one thing is sure: All notebooks that find their way back to Arthur Graham will have their pages scanned into a free eBook and gifted via download to the farthest reaches of the cosmos.
For more information on Arthur Graham and the FDB project, please see http://www.arthurgraham.blogspot.com/."

CAMP CONDUIT GIFTING SUN HATS & BONDAGE ROPES
The Mad Hatters write:
"What is a Rite of Passage without a fabulous new hat to accompany it? Camp Conduit comes to Burning Man bearing gifts for the masses--hundreds of sun hats that we've been collecting all year (and some belts and other accessories, too). Try them on to your heart's content, and pick out whatever you like to take with you. We have mirrors, so play and have fun! We can help you pick out the perfect complement for your Playa attire, from wide-brimmed sun protection to nighttime-warmth fuzzy goodness. We'll even add a chin strap to keep your new fashion accessory firmly anchored to your head in the wind. Then, if you wish, we'll take a lovely photo of you sporting your new chapeau--and with your permission, we'll add it to our Facebook page after the event, so you can nab a copy of it online.
We're also gifting short lengths of hemp rope for those on-Playa bondage classes. We have lots to give away, and we'll be happy to teach you a knot or two while we're at it. Don't forget to ask for a tour of our alternative energy usage and grey water recycling, and feel free to grab one of Camp Conduit’s free bumper stickers as well. Look for our tall white dome (next to a long, tall silver tunnel), in the 3:00 and F vicinity during the day. If we're not in, feel free to rummage through the accessories in our public dome, and pick out a hat--or several!
See you on the Playa!

The show includes various surprises, turns by musical and comedic acts-- even former Vice President Dick Cheney, it's rumored, may put in an appearance. But most performers are you who show up to take a turn on our runway. A Burning Man Tradition, performed in sun, storm or rain. OFF-PLAYA EVENTS
If you're not able to make it to the playa this year, consider gathering your friends up and hosting a Balsa Man event ... or find an existing Balsa Man event in your region. While these aren't official Burning Man events per se, they're certainly fun ways to conjure up some of the playa spirit on a micro-level. And any chance to connect with fellow Burners is time well spent.

Many regional groups also host 'orphaner' events (check regionals.burningman.com for burners in your area) or webcast viewing parties. Or host your own!

AMAZING PANORAMIC PHOTOS OF BURNING MAN 2010 FROM BRAD TEMPLETON
Brad writes:
"I have a new gallery of giant panoramas of Burning man 2010. The first interesting thing is that these are my largest yet, some running over a billion pixels. You'll see shots of the whole city, of the Man and conclave before the burn, twilight, the temple and more.
What is also new is I am now displaying them with a flash "zoom" viewer that lets you zoom in on any point and pan around. It's particularly amazing if you remember to click the "fullscreen" button in the upper right corner and use your arrow keys and mouse scroll wheel.
All these can be found at:
http://pic.templetons.com/brad/pano/bman10.html
There's also a link to the gallery of normal size photos of 2010.
In addition, I have converted many of the old favourite panoramas, going back to 1998 to the zoom viewer, so you can see these shots at full resolution for the first time off the playa. But they will be on the playa at the 9 o'clock plaza -- see you there. There are two galleries with the best of 13 different years:
http://pic.templetons.com/brad/pano/bigburn.html
Has the big 360 degree view of every BRC 98-10, and
http://pic.templetons.com/brad/pano/bestburn.html
Has some of my favourite shots for all the years. And http://www.templetons.com/brad/burn/ has links to all the old stuff."
