This is it! The final JRS of the year! Well, the Burn year, that is. We're all here on playa, getting the place nice and spiffy, eagerly awaiting your presence and profound gifts of creativity. It's GORGEOUS out here ... the playa surface is wonderful, and the weather's been great (which is to say hot and then cool, dusty and then clear, windy and then still...) and the artwork is incredible.

Keep in mind that it's ALWAYS DUSTY and weather can change in an instant ... prepare for everything, for reals!

We've received quite a large number of post requests for this JRS, and building BRC takes precedent now: we just can't get to all of them and won't be able to post any more BRC JRS requests for participants for 2011. If you'd like to get your event or activity out to your fellow Burners, come on down to Playa Info in Center Camp and add it to the Playa Directory. And, of course, in the case you're looking for what's going on, check out the Directory!

We are so incredibly excited ... it's all happening, people! We can't wait to see you all here, rockin' it.

The Man burns in 9 days (OMG single digits!)! SEE YOU VERY SOON.

*** NEW! NEW! GUIDELINES FOR PERSONAL CAMERAS - NO PERSONAL USE TAGS IN 2011 ***

Burning Man has created policies and agreements to enact a special zone for the use of cameras in Black Rock City. These policies are aimed at protecting participants' right to privacy and preventing the commodification of our event and we appreciate all our participants have done over the years to help protect this special zone.

We've continued our quest to keep updating these policies in keeping with the times, while maintaining our ability to protect Black Rock City and its inhabitants. While we've never required registration for personal still cameras, all Video Cameras for personal use must physically register for permission to shoot moving imagery in Black Rock City.

For many years this process has been achieved by filling out a Personal Use Agreement upon entry, stating intent to use imagery only for personal use (friends and family), and affixing an approval tag to the camera indicating this registration has been completed.

NEW INFO: Starting this year, these personal use video cameras will still fill out the permission form, but they will NOT RECEIVE TAGS.

Over the years as technology has evolved, the number, size, and type of personal cameras (and the ways we share imagery online) have transformed this legal landscape -- so much that placing actual tags on these types of cameras has become outmoded and even impractical (where to affix a tag on an iPhone, exactly?). Therefore, we have opted to keep the agreement but eliminate the tag.

The same legal net of protection is afforded for BRC by the terms and conditions (http://tickets2.burningman.com/info.php?i=2386) that *every* participant agrees to by their entry to the event. This prevent the use of ANY image for widescale public distribution or commercial purposes without expressed written permission from Burning Man.

For video, we also enact the added protection of the Personal Use Agreement, which requires video camera users to state their intentions only to share for personal purposes, and to notify Burning Man before making any further uses.

We anticipate a period of adjustment as we all educate each other about this new method - we've become accustomed to watching out for tags on EVERY video camera, but now, the only tags present will be those on professional cameras. Please remember as you watch your fellow participants using cameras this year that NO personal cameras will carry camera tags - if someone's shooting without a tag, it doesn't mean they haven't registered, and they're still required to get written permission to do anything with that footage beyond personal use.

Otherwise, only professional cameras will carry tags. Professional media also wear a laminate that identifies them as members of the press. Media Mecca, Playa Info, and the Civic Info Kiosks located around the city will have posters displaying the 2011 Media Tag looks like so you can identify when a camera aimed at you is tagged with professional credentials.

As stated in the Terms of Use, even if a camera user is shooting only to show their friends and family, they should still observe the right to privacy of their fellow participants, the same as we expect of the press and anyone else taking images in BRC. EVERY PARTICIPANT should be aware of the "Rights and Responsibilities for Media and Participants" at http://burningman.com/press/pressRandR.html, whether they'll be behind the camera or in front of it.

Also new for 2011: personal use imagery may be licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution Non Commercial Share Alike license, as outlined in the Terms and Conditions linked above - but *only* if your images do not contain nudity! As with all other camera use in BRC, you agree to ask permission and otherwise uphold your fellow participants' rights inside of Black Rock City. For more information on this license for 2011, see our Burning Blog post from January: http://blog.burningman.com/?p=10906&preview=true.

Finally, since with the loss of camera tags and Personal Use Agreement forms we are losing a potential avenue to identify lost camera owners, Retro from Community Services suggests that you take a shot of your contact info and leave the image on your camera or phone. This really helps with lost and found return efforts!

**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**

DOWNLOAD THE "IBURN" IPHONE APP

Download this year's iBurn iPhone app, and enjoy a full playa directory on your smartphone (no Android version currently). Look for 'iBurn2011" in the app store and install from there. A password to unlock the app will be made available via the app after the gates open at 12:01am Monday.

LOST AND FOUND PRO-TIPS

From the volunteers who work the lost and found:

"Label all of your stuff if you want it back. We have yet to see the experiment where a Burner loses something deliberately just so they can get the thrill of standing in the lost and found line to get it back. Think you are too good to lose something? Tell it to the wind when you are out of camp. But we who work lost and found get a real charge out of reuniting you with your lost stuff. Label your stuff, and I mean all of it. Use those sticky address labels, and add your phone/email/camp address.

Also, since with the loss of camera tags and Personal Use Agreement forms we are losing a potential avenue to identify camera owners, we suggest you take a shot of your contact info and leave the image on your camera or phone. This really helps with lost and found return efforts!

The Lost and Found Mother."

DId we just say that camera thing twice? Oh yes we did. So do it!

**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**

FREE LOCKSMITH ON THE PLAYA!

Nice one:

"Charisma will be stationed at Nexus camp offering free locksmith services for anyone who needs them. Anything unlocked, bike locks removed, some keys made. Nexus camp, look for the RV with locksmith signs."

**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**

BE SUPER CAREFUL DRIVING ON I-80 THROUGH RENO

We drove this ourselves the other day, and Jeff speaks the truth ... he writes:

"I was wondering if you could please try to drive home a warning to all those driving thru Reno on I-80 from CA. I had to drive on it today at lunch. I-80 around the downtown area is only two lanes each direction, quite narrow, and there are concrete barriers on both sides with no shoulder. Every year I see burners involved in accidents on I-80 and this year will be even more dangerous with all this construction. Anyone driving RVs and trailers and towing art cars and all that fun stuff should exercise extreme caution. Please throw out some extra warnings to everyone. Thanks,
-Jeff"

**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**

AND SERIOUSLY...

Slow down on the way in. Once you leave your house, you are already at Burning Man. There is no need to rush - observe the posted speed limits on the highways leading to Burning Man. We want you in one piece.

**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**

SAGE ADVICE FOR PET OWNERS LEAVING THEIR PETS HOME WITH A SITTER

Michelle writes:

"If your pet has a tag, change it. The new temporary tag should have the number of the pet sitter. There is no point having your number on it while you are incommunicado in a tutu with no pockets to hold the phone that gets no reception.

Also, make sure you email recent pictures of your pet and any distinguishing marks to the sitter should they need to make up any lost notices if required. This will help them as they will already feel pretty crap about the missing pet.

Yes, I have had experience with this.

Have fun out there kids.

Michelle"

**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**

DON'T BREATHE TOXIC SMOKE!

While you should NEVER ... EVER put toxic materials in a fire at Burning Man or anywhere else ... sometimes these things happen. Here's a good reminder / suggestion:

"I just read your third (?) to last post re: Healthcare/Emergency Services/etc. Thank you very much by the way! Umm, I was wondering if you could post a note/Public Service Announcement in yer next BManUpdate about people BEING CAREFUL ABOUT INHALING THE SMOKE COMING OFF OF FIRES LIKE BURN BARRELS, BURNING ART, ETC. (sorry about the all-caps, but i think it's important, y'know). Every year, we go out to the playa, and then inhale toxic smoke because we wanna keep warm, or we wanna talk to that cute gal/guy in the sexy-bunny suit, and to get close to them we sidle up by the fire, directly in the smoke stream of treated wood/plastic/etc. {ED NOTE: PLEASE PEOPLE, DO NOT PUT THESE THINGS INTO FIRES! - AG} when all we have to do is move a couple feet away, around, etc. (and move them too, if they wanna...) Yah, we're all gonna be downstream of fires at different times, but at least we can be AWARE of it and TAKE ACTION to mitigate any harm. That way we can still be warm, can still flirt (perhaps more :), and save our lungs, not get cancer, etc. etc. Much LOVE to my Burning Man family from Brian the Camp Nexus Bee!

Thanks for everything, see you on the playa!"

**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**<>/**

SHOWERS & LIVE ENTERTAINMENT AT THE EMPIRE STORE

We're assuming that the live entertainment is not related to the showers. Sherry writes:

"The Empire Store will have showers on site this year. Also there will be live entertainment and food on Sat night Aug 27th."

Ian writes:

"I'm excited to share with you a new interview I directed with Marco Cochrane, the sculptor behind last years "Bliss Dance." He gave us a look at his new piece for this year "Truth is Beauty" and his thoughts on art, Burning Man, and the theme: rites of passage.

I would love for you to share it with the Burner community. Here's the links:

PYRAMID LAKE FLAG AND FOOD DRIVE NEEDS YOU!

The folks at Comfort and Joy camp write:

"I'm writing to ask your camp to join the Burning Man 'Good Neighbor' campaign, by donating your leftover food to Pauite tribal charties as you pass through their Reservation.

For many of us, it's not Burning Man without Indian Fry-bread on the way in & out. Most travelers to Burning Man drive through the towns of Wadsworth & Nixon on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, which is famous for beautiful land and tasty food served by friendly people (like Elaine & her family, below). The Tribe is very welcoming to Burning Man and very hospitable to travelers. Don't just drive through, stop to enjoy up some fresh hot food... and support the tribe by filling up your car's gas tank.

Post-Burn PYRAMID LAKE FOOD DRIVE

Tell your Kitchen People - you can donate leftover playa food on the Reservation on your way home from the Burn. Donate non-perishable camp food to local Paiute tribal charities helping foster children & victims of domestic violence. As you drive through the Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation, Look for Comfort & Joy's bright Day-Glo flags decorating Taco Stands in Nixon & Wadsworth to easily find drop-off points for Food Donations... and amazing fresh Tacos.

FOOD DRIVE Dropoff Locations: Look for the Flags!

(1) Nixon: Bunny's Tacos
Serving Frybread / Veggie Tacos
Downtown Nixon - Approx 60 miles south of Gerlach
(Also be sure to visit the Tribal Mueseum in Nixon)

(2) Wadsworth: Elaine's Stop
Serving Indian Tacos / Frybread / Taco Salad
1 Mile North of I-80, Exit 447

Be sure to support the tribe by buying gas & stopping for a Taco - they're delicious! You can also donate unwanted Bikes to the tribe at these licensed food vendors. All food + bike donations are collected directly by tribal members & benefit local foster youth and the Tribal Senior center.

For more information see Comfort & Joy's blog post: http://playajoy.org/?p=4392
