Getting news alerts is helpful in a couple ways.
First, it brings relevant news stories from around the world, and,
while news from afar may not seem relevant to our near backyards, the
same damned trends have been set loose around the world.
Second, the chance to review what news media are reporting is
diagnostic of public awareness. One trend I see or think I see is
that the media have jumped ahead of the conservation community in
bringing the consequences of global warming to the public, and that
the public may therefore be moving far ahead of the political
leadership. Lance
Organic Consumers Association (OCA) survey needs your info!
Organic standards for personal care products (e.g. lotion, shampoo, toothpaste, cosmetics, etc.) are currently being developed by a task force. The OCA is fortunate to have a staff person serving as a voting representative for consumers on this task force. Unfortunately, they are the only voice for consumers on this task force made-up almost entirely of industry representatives. Please take this short 19 question survey to help them know better how to vote in a manner that creates a standard that protects your individual needs and desires, as a consumer of personal care products. You can have an important and effective hand in helping to sculpt organic standards simply by taking this quick anonymous survey now.

Event Type: Screening
This compelling documentary tells the story of an unlikely team of young activists and old lefties who unite around environmental activist Judi Bari's legal battle against the U.S. government. Director Mellis is the daughter of veteran civil rights lawyer Dennis Cunningham, who started out representing the Black Panthers and the Weathermen. Judi was an Earth First! leader whose car was bombed in 1990. Authorities claimed that she bombed herself, and she was arrested as a terrorist—charges that were later dropped. Convinced it was a ploy by the FBI to discredit her, Judi decided to sue. Cunningham took on Judi's case, and after 12 years Judi Bari v. the FBI finally got a court date. The film eloquently depicts the painfully short yet extraordinary life of Judi Bari as well as a piece of U.S. history that everyday grows increasingly resonant.

Police Commission Hearing on Government Surveillance
Wed Jan 17 5:30pm 2007 New Surveillance Cameras Proposed for 16th & Mission and 7 Other SF Locations
http://indybay.org/newsitems/2007/01/15/18347244.php
San Francisco's Police Commission will hold a hearing about government surveillance on Wednesday January 17th. The Police Commission has supported the installation of cameras because it says that “the community wants them.” ACLU of Northern California is encouraging concerned community members to testify that "the community wants REAL solutions, not empty political gestures that put our civil liberties at risk."
ACLU-NC says that the expanded video surveillance program should be rejected because cameras do not reduce crime, cameras threaten privacy and free speech rights as the government is allowed to track what people are doing and where they are going, and lastly, that cameras are expensive. ACLU-NC suggests that the funds proposed for the surveillance cameras could be better spent on more effective crime-reduction measures such as increased foot patrols, community policing, or better lighting. The hearing on January 17th will take place in SF City Hall, Room 400, at 5:30pm. Flyer ACLU-NC is asking for people to let them know that they will be attending. Organizations such as the SF Surveillance Camera Players have in the past conducted tours of cameras in the city.

Please come to the Police Commission Hearing!
SF Police Commission hearing re. installing more surveillance cameras
WHEN: Wednesday, January 17th @ 5:30 PM
WHERE: San Francisco City Hall, Room 400. Take any elevator to the 4th floor.
BACKGROUND
The police commission will decide whether or not to approve the surveillance cameras at each of the 8 locations. The Board of Supervisors passed a Video Surveillance Ordinance last year in an effort to reign in the proliferation of cameras. The ordinance places the burden on the agency proposing new cameras to demonstrate that “the potential to deter criminal activity outweighs any concern asserted by the affected community." Only after making such findings may the commission approve camera placement.
The Police Commission considered the cameras at 6 of these locations in November, but did not make any findings about the cameras effectiveness and provided insufficient notice to the community. Because of the insufficient notice, the issue is being re-heard.
At the last hearing, there were FAR more supporters of cameras than opponents, and although one Commissioner referred to the cameras “a placebo”, the number of people at the hearing in support of the cameras convinced the Commissioners to vote for them.
We need you – and anyone you can bring with you – to come testify that you don’t want the city to install more surveillance cameras.
ABOUT THE HEARING
The police commission will begin to discuss the cameras at 6 PM tomorrow. We STRONGLY recommend arriving by 5:30 PM so that you can get a seat – there will probably be a lot of people at the hearing.
Each person has three minutes to present their testimony to the Police Commission, but you DON’T have to speak for three minutes! Given the number of people that may be at the hearing, the Commission may limit public testimony to two minutes per person.
The Commission will be tracking how many people speak in support and in opposition, so your testimony can be as simple as “My name is Nora Dye, and I oppose the installation of more surveillance cameras in San Francisco. We should be spending our money on techniques that actually work, like increased foot patrols and better lighting. I urge you, the members of the SF Police Commission, to oppose the installation of more surveillance cameras.”
You can write down your comments or just speak – the commission hearing is relatively informal.
INFORMATION ABOUT WHY WE OPPOSE THE CAMERAS
- Studies have found that public video surveillance doesn’t significantly reduce crime -- especially violent crime in city centers -- or make people feel safer
- This technology represents an invasion of our privacy and offers the potential for new forms of abuse. Although there are some regulations on the use of cameras and footage in SF, those regulations may be changed and are insufficient to prevent members of the public and law enforcement agencies from accessing video footage.
- The supposed pilot program that began over a year ago has never been fully evaluated. More cameras should not be placed without a comprehensive evaluation of existing cameras.
- A British study of surveillance cameras showed that the cameras were used to target people of color, women, and those who look or act "slightly different" disproportionately. One in 10 women were monitored entirely for voyeuristic reasons.
- From Scotland to Sydney, studies have shown that the installation of video cameras does not prevent crime. At best, the crime simply moves from where the cameras are to where they aren't.
- Community policing programs, not cameras, prevent, reduce, and solve crime. While video cameras only provide the illusion of deterring crime, improved lighting alone, for example, has been show to reduce crime on average 20%.

Supervisor Mirkarimi's 3rd Friday Art Opening: Artful Aging
On Friday, January 19, 2007, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosts the monthly Third Friday’s Art Reception in his City Hall office, Room 282. AgeSong, in conjunction with Supervisor Ross Mikarmini, invites the public to enjoy this FREE event which presents the opening of an art exhibit of works by the residents of AgeSong, a senior community in Hayes Valley. The unique quilts handcrafted by 17 artists will be on display. The opening provides an opportunity to meet the artists and speak personally to them about their work.
This show will be dedicated to Harriet Tubman, an African American icon known as "Moses" to her people for her work with the Underground Railroad leading slaves out of bondage to the North. Ninety-nine years ago, in 1908, Harriet Tubman established the first home for the elderly and indigent blacks. Located in Auburn, New York, this has since become known as The Harriet Tubman Home. Her vision and concern for the elderly continues today in assisted living communities throughout the world and specifically in AgeSong’s Hayes Valley Care and Laguna Grove Care.

Founded in the summer of 2004 by three women, the magazine has already garnered lots of press attention as well as winning the coveted Utne Independent Press Award for “Best New Title of 2005 after only three issues. $pread actively confronts various stigmas surrounding sex work, raises awareness of legal and political issues affecting sex workers, and encourages support for the rights of all people working in the sex industries."

ART LOUNGE 2007: Calling artists, scientists and environmentalists!

ART LOUNGE 2007: Calling artists, scientists and environmentalists!
Join us for a reception at Burning Man HQ Friday, January 26th from 5-8pm
1900 3rd St, 2nd Floor (between 16th and Mariposa) San Francisco.
Purpose: To bring artists, scientists and eco-heros of various shapes and
sizes together in a social atmosphere with the Burning Man staff, to
honor their
contributions and inspire cross pollination in the year ahead as we
figure out exactly
what "Green Man" means to us!
Taking "green" into consideration means thinking about the effect each of
your decisions has on the environment and choosing the least harmful/most
beneficial option possible. Specific things to take into consideration
include materials being used, energy consumed, and waste produced. We
aren't
saying let's NOT burn art and we don't wish to dillute the intensity of the
creative expression at Burning Man. But we do want to inspire a sense of
ownership of the entire creative process from creation to destruction and
back in ways that inspire social change on and off the playa and
potentially
lead the way to new forms and concepts of art making.
Are you wondering how to power your art installation using alternative
energy?
Do you have knowledge of a new or green technology that might be of
interest
to artists?
Please join Burning Man staff and volunteers for a wine and cheese
reception
honoring artists, scientists, and members of our newly formed "Greening The
Burn Group" and let's see what conversations spark in the year ahead!
Members of the Art Dept and other Burning Man staff will also be on hand to
discuss the overall art process with you and see what's on your mind!
Please RSVP to special-events@burningman.com if you will attend.
Hope to see many of you there!

This special presentation, "The Falling Age of Puberty in U.S. Girls: What We Know, What We Need to Know," will be held in San Francisco January 31.
As a known risk factor for breast cancer, early puberty is cause for concern. So what's causing it? What can we do to reverse the trend?
The Breast Cancer Fund is proud to host Dr. Steingraber, a noted ecologist, cancer survivor and expert on environmental links to cancer and reproductive health. She is also the author of Having Faith: An Ecologist's Journey to Motherhood and Living Downstream: An Ecologist Looks at Cancer and the Environment.
