ALERT: NEW EPA DEAL LETS FACTORY FARMS POLLUTE AIR WITHOUT RESTRICTION
The day after the inauguration, January 21, the Bush Administration signed an agreement that allows factory farms to freely violate any and all clean air standards for the next two years, and forgives these same companies from paying fines for past air pollution violations. In exchange for the freedom to pollute without any restrictions, the deal "requests" that factory farms agree to monitor their air pollution and provide that data to the government. Bush's "Dirty Air" agreement is outrageous, given that the Clean Air Act already requires factory farms to provide air pollution data, while also requiring facilities to adhere to clean air standards. One of the companies that will benefit the most from this arrangement with the Bush Administration is Tyson Foods, who also happened to be one of the largest donors to the Bush inaugural festivities. Fortunately there is a 30 day public comment period. Please make your voice heard. Take action here.

# Deconstructing the Rainbow Friday, January 28- Saturday January 29, 2005
9-ish to assemble, 10-ish to start FREE

So, Have You seen the awesome art installation at Adobe Books: all books rearranged by Berkeley artist Chris Cobb by color, versus title, topic, author, or any other sort of whimsy? If You haven't--see it! Now! Although it has stayed up for much longer than an intended 10 days, it comes down this Friday, 9-ish to whenever-ish. You haven't erected, but You can be there to help bring down. Oh, the fumes of aged books...and...me!
For, it is also a "10th year anniversary since my last birthday party" party. Wouldn't You like to celebrate my "10th anniversary since my last birthday party" party amongst books, cakes and well-meaning strangers? Well, You might not part until dawn break!

if you like me,
you LOVE cake
and if You don't like cake
You like books, right?
well, set them, left and
cause if You don't like me, cake or books,
It is hoped that You are a barbarian who pillages and ravages rainbows
according to subject matter inherent in each wavelength.

# BUILD WITH EARTH - eco-building workshop
Sat Jan 29 + Sun Jan 30 10:00 AM The LAUNCHPAD
3833 Martin Luther King Jr. Way, just North of MacArthur
Oakland, CA 94609 view map More Info: 415-218-2743
http://oakland.cityrepair.org/
Learn how to build beautiful houses and other structures from earth, using a technique called COB. Also called monolithic adobe, cob is made by combining clay, sand, straw, and water, then mixing it with your feet, and molding it with your hands.

Why learn how to build from cob? Why are cob houses better than stick-frame wood houses? 1, you can build one by yourself for really cheap; 2, it's healthy for people, and healthy for the planet; & 3, and best of all, you can sculpt the houses into beautiful, funky shapes!

This is an excellent opportunity to learn the basics of cob building, without having to leave the city. We will be covering siting, design, foundations, walls, and weatherproofing. When you leave the workshop, you should feel confident enough to build a cob structure in your own backyard!

Millions of people all over the world live in earthen homes, because they are affordable, healthy, and beautiful. Connect to your primal human self, and find out what you've been missing all this time.

Space is limited, so call early to register:

He was imprisoned and then released seven weeks later as a result of an outpouring of international pressure. Fr. Sun Jan 30, 3--4pm!!! SF Civic Center Plaza
Honoring our “Covenant of Compassion"
All faith traditions, as well as the intrinsic goodness of the human heart, compel us to stand firmly with our poor and homeless sisters and brothers in their hour of suffering.  This event will renew our compassionate spirit as we are dramatically reminded of the profound suffering of the thousands of individuals in San Francisco and throughout the Bay Area who have no homes.
 A dramatic event featuring:
 · Testimony of homeless individuals as told   through their own moving poems
 · Ritual response of religious leaders and rally participants
 · Songs by the renowned Vocolot Ensemble  · Sacred dance

Jan 31: Price of Aid Everyday the U.S. donates millions of tons of food to famine victims and other starving people in the world's poorest countries. The provocative documentary reveals the vast bureaucratic network of American aid agencies involved in the 'hunger business,' one in which rich countries benefit from the problems of poor countries and questions how America's well-intentioned foreign-aid program has spawned a self-serving relationship between humanitarian aid and American business and politics. Zambia, a country teetering on the precipice of famine, becomes a cause for a solemn discussion regarding the dignity of the people we seek to help. 55 mins, 2004

Feb 7: Argentina: Hope in Hard Times joins in the processions and protests, attends street-corner neighborhood assemblies, visits workers' cooperatives and urban gardens, taking a close-up look at the ways in which Argentines are picking up the pieces of their devastated economy and creating new possibilities for the future. A spare narrative, informal interview settings, and candid street scenes allow the pervasive strength, humor, and resilience of the Argentine people to tell these tales. These are their inspiring stories - of a failed economy and distrusted politicians, of heartache and hard times, of a resurgence of grassroots democracy and the spirit of community - told in resonant detail. 74 mins, 2004

Feb 14: For Man Must Work The 20th century has seen the creation of colossal wealth and exploding economies. But the days of industry providing mass employment are over. In the global economy, human resources are being replaced by technology. We are moving from a mass labor force to an elite corps concentrated in the knowledge sector. Will this change result in a sort of economic apartheid in which a third of humanity is made redundant? Will this revolution mean the end of work as we know it? The film raises crucial questions and suggests rethinking the future. Filmed in the United States, Canada, France and Mexico, the film shows how living and working conditions are deteriorating for many people. Besides personal stories, we also hear from experts such as Vivianne Forrester, author of The Economic Horror; Jeremy Rifkin, American economist and author of The End of Work and others. 52 mins, 2001

Feb 21: Trading Democracy Bill Moyers reports on Chapter 11 of North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) which multinational corporations who are using to challenge democracy. Chapter 11 is only one provision in the 555-page NAFTA - negotiated to promote business among the US, Canada and Mexico and was supposedly written to protect investors if foreign governments tried to seize their property. But corporations have stretched NAFTA's Chapter 11 to undermine environmental decisions, sue local governments, overturn decisions of local communities in cases that are heard before international trade tribunals that make rulings in secret. 58 mins, 2002

Feb 28: End of Suburbia: Oil Depletion and the Collapse of The American Dream With brutal honesty and a touch of irony, The End of Suburbia explores the American Way of Life and its prospects as the planet approaches a critical era, as global demand for fossil fuels begins to outstrip supply. World Oil Peak and the inevitable decline of fossil fuels are upon us now, some scientists and policy makers argue in this documentary. What does Oil Peak mean for North America? As energy prices skyrocket in the coming years, how will the populations of suburbia react to the collapse of their dream? Are today's suburbs destined to become the slums of tomorrow? And what can be done NOW, individually and collectively, to avoid The End of Suburbia ? 78 mins, 2004

March 7: Velorution: One City's Solution to the Automobile - When the USSR collapsed, Cuba lost 80% of their oil supply. This movie documents how they bought 1.2 million bicycles, switched 5 bus factories to bicycle manufacturing, educated riders on how to ride, changed the city of Havana to accommodate bikes, posted bicycle signs, did job swaps to reduce length of commutes and in the process created more human interaction and community A truly inspiring video. 30 mins, 1996

Also on March 7: Greening of Cuba - When trade relations with the socialist block collapsed in 1990, Cuba lost 80% of its pesticide and fertilizer imports and half its petroleum - the mainstays of its highly industrialized agriculture. Challenged with growing food for 11 million in the face of the continuing U.S. embargo, Cuba embarked on the largest conversion to organic farming ever attempted. Told in the voices of the women and men - the campesinos, researchers, and organic gardeners - who are leading the organic agriculture movement, The Greening of Cuba reminds us that developed and developing nations alike can choose a healthier environment and still feed their people. 38 mins, 1996

March 14: About Baghdad - In July of 2003, exiled writer and poet Sinan Antoon returned to his native Baghdad with a team of independent filmmakers, artists and poets to document the effects that decades of oppression, war, sanctions and occupation have had on his city. The result is a fascinating mosaic of opinions, perspectives, desires and memories that offers a picture far more complex than the limited one presented by mainstream US media. ABOUT BAGHDAD pays tribute to the brave people of Baghdad as they struggle to come to terms with the tragic fate of their beloved city. 90 mins, 2004

March 21: Friendship Village - An award-winning documentary about an international group of veterans who are building a village in Viet Nam for children with Agent Orange-related disabilities. Built on a former rice paddy near Hanoi, the Friendship Village stands not only as a symbol of peace and reconciliation, but as a testament to the potential for all people to come to terms with the past, heal the wounds of war, and create a better world. Veterans from the USA, Vietnam, France, Germany, Japan, Great Britain and Australia are attempting to mitigate the ongoing effects of the toxic herbicide sprayed during the war. Their efforts are a powerful example of how average people can still make a profound difference in our increasingly globalized world. As such, the Vietnam Friendship Village has the potential to change not only the lives of the children who live in it and the men who build it, but all who come to understand its mission. 50 mins, 2003

# Sat Feb 5 9 PM - 2 AM FLYING PIG SEX DISASTER FUNDRAISER
@ THE SHIPYARD in Berkeley, 1010 Murray Street
Come see the pig fly!  Come see the other pig do things to the first
pig that are illegal in several states!  Come see the pig(s) burn!
The fat will drip and the pig will split and the coins that YOU put inside the
pig will create a lovely musical symphony of metal and hog butter on a
giant donation plate.  BACON! SEX! MONEY! DON'T MISS THIS!  BRING US
YOUR CHANGE AND WE WILL CHANGE IT!

Yes, the people behind this have acually constructed a giant metal pig.
It will be stuffed with money (my money, your money, the jingly kind)
and mated with a second pig for no good reason at all.  Suspended high
above the majestic skyline of Berkeley, it will take a magical Peter
Pan-type flight around ! the Shipyard, possibly to the accompaniment of
bluegrass mash ups, and then it will be set aflame and immolated in its
own pigginess.  Coins will drop magically from its belly and cascade
onto a resonant metal plate.  The pig dies, but offers itself up as the
ultimate sacrifice to the good people at Coin Star Inc.  The pig who
saved art!  Hooray for the pig!

BRING YOUR SPARE CHANGE AND PUT IT INSIDE THE PIG!  I know I have like
50 bucks worth of pennies in a closet somewhere.  What am I ever going
to do with it?  Hey, what if I PUT IT INSIDE A BURNING PIG?  WE give
the
money to artists, YOU take home memories (and perhaps the odor of
rendered pig fat) that will last a lifetime.

Come witness flaming PIG MAGIC and more: crazy hillbilly MUSIC will be
provided for your entertainment (if watching a fucking flying burning
pig drop money out of its ass isn't enough,) BAR where you can DRINK.
BOOZE.  I SAID THE WORD.  BOOZE.  Come and spin the HYPERWHISKEY WHEEL
OF TERRER and win some crap... or learn a painful lesson. DONATE to
BORG2 and have a great time doing it... and possibly a headache.  And
much more to be announced!

VEGETARIANS AND/OR PETA MEMBERS:  NO ACTUAL PIG WILL BE HARMED DURING
THIS EVENT.  AT LEAST NOT BY US.

# "Smart Dust & Silicon Swarms:
The Brilliant New World of  Mobile Sensor Nanomesh Networks"
Sunday, February 13, 2005  1 - 5 p.m. at
Round Table Pizza
Banquet Room on 2nd Floor
5160 Geary Blvd. (at 16th Ave.)
San Francisco, California

Philip Langton
Nikola Tesla is widely acknowledged as the father of Robotics, but even Tesla might pause in awe to ponder some of the potential applications of technologies Philip Langton is working to develop.  His research could eventually lead to scalable nanomesh net applications such as: smart shipping labels that report damage, spray on computers or a robo-insect air force.

How will smart dust particles talk to each other?  What are the most likely nanomesh products to reach consumers soon?  Might we see a computer in a can in 3 years?    What are the costs and dangers of this new technology?  Mr. Langton has some fascinating answers to share.

Philip Langton is a second-generation Silicon Valley engineer / inventor expert in Optical Frequency Identification Devices (OFID), Micro-Electro- Mechanical Systems (MEMS) and process control manufacturing,   Philip recently received the first patents (US #6553481 and #6772239) ever issued for a self-, one-time only, programmable (SOTOP™).  single-circuit secure memory device (SCSMD).

Parking is available on the street or for $ 2 per hour in the garage nearby behind ROSS Dept. Store.  For more information about the San Francisco Tesla Society, call (415) 931-2593, or visit us online at http://sftesla.org

# February 16 is Global Warming Awareness Day
On February 16, 2005, the world's first global warming treaty will
become effective. The treaty requires industrialized countries to
limit, by 2008-2012, their annual emissions of greenhouse gases to
the atmosphere to 5.2 percent below 1990 level of emissions.

The United States is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the
world. Governmental leaders of the U.S. did not ratify the Kyoto
Treaty. Consequently, the United States is not subject to the
requirements of the Kyoto Treaty. Seventy-one countries ratified the
treaty, as of January 20, 2005.

Meanwhile, Earth's globally averaged land, ocean and atmospheric
temperatures have continued to increase, especially since about 1980.
Scientists have reported that temperatures across the globe rose an
average of 1.1 degree Fahrenheit over the past century, with the rate
of change since 1976 at roughly three times that over the past 100
years. A large majority of the world's scientists attribute the last
30 years of warming to rising accumulations of heat-
trapping "greenhouse gases" in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases such
as carbon dioxide - the most abundant of the greenhouse gases -
remain suspended in the atmosphere upwards of 100 years, with each
year's emissions accumulating with the previous and the subsequent
years of emissions.

In 2003, U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases totaled 6.94 billion
metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which was 0.7 percent
higher than 2002's total U.S. emissions and 13.4 percent higher than
1990's total emissions of 6.12 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide
equivalent (U.S. Energy Information Administration, "Emissions of
Greenhouse Gases in the United States 2003", December 2004).

February 16, 2005 is being recognized as "Global Warming Awareness
Day" in the United States. Recommended actions for people in the U.S.
to take on Global Warming Awareness Day 2005 can be found by

Redefining Our Relationships
A RADICAL LOVE WORKSHOP
with Wendy-O Matik
Author of the book, Redefining Our Relationships- Guidelines for Responsible Open Relationships
$10 – $20, sliding scale
http://www.wendyomatik.com
This is a daring and provocative how-to workshop on radically defined relationships and alternative lifestyles. Wendy-O Matik talks about what she has lived and experienced: open relationships. She believes that open relationships reduce the hazards that accompany unhealthy co-dependency. Open relationships challenge us to confront our jealousy and possessiveness. Committing to a relationship not mapped out by our parents or society or Hollywood means tearing down the very foundation of status quo and conformity. It means redefining and rebuilding your own version of an alternative relationship based on your needs and your values.
Loving openly and freely in this day and age, whether you're straight or queer, is a political act. We are conditioned by out-moded social norms that limit our perceptions and shackle us to unhealthy cycles of dissatisfying relationships. Yet we live in a time where we can choose our own gender or redefine our own sexual identity. Isn't it safe to assume that we also have a right to decide what kind of relationship is more suitable to our lifestyle? Declare yourself a revolutionary activist of the heart. Find out how you can expand your potential to love, and radicalize your lifestyle!
Check out the East Bay Express article about Wendy-O here:

# Interdependance Day Week End - A New Global Holiday Launch
Sunday, March 20 12:00 PM
http://www.phisolama.com/interdependencehome.htm
We are inviting together a team of like-minded souls who wish to cooperate to produce an amazing global transformational event in mid-March.
Interdependance Day is a celebrating of the inherent connection of All That Is and the Expression of a Universal Culture based on the realization that All is Related and Mutual. We are inviting Creators of all type to join together to make a most Inspiring Evocation of our Collective Spirit.
Core to Buddhism is the realization that everything arises as an interdependent whole, that there is no separation. It is this illusion of separation that is the source of suffering, the ills of the world or "samsara". Realization and Embodiment of Interdependence is in like measure core to Our Original Expression.
To this end we have recently started a new tribe, the "Interdependence Day" tribe to coordinate the creation of this event. You are invited to join us, too.
Our tribe format is based a self-organizing model/experiment using tribe.net, as a collaborative "software" venue to organize and implement the launch in March of Interdependance Day.
