ALERT: NEW EPA DEAL LETS FACTORY FARMS POLLUTE AIR WITHOUT RESTRICTION
The day after the inauguration, January 21, the Bush Administration signed an agreement that allows factory farms to freely violate any and all clean air standards for the next two years, and forgives these same companies from paying fines for past air pollution violations. In exchange for the freedom to pollute without any restrictions, the deal "requests" that factory farms agree to monitor their air pollution and provide that data to the government. Bush's "Dirty Air" agreement is outrageous, given that the Clean Air Act already requires factory farms to provide air pollution data, while also requiring facilities to adhere to clean air standards. One of the companies that will benefit the most from this arrangement with the Bush Administration is Tyson Foods, who also happened to be one of the largest donors to the Bush inaugural festivities. Fortunately there is a 30 day public comment period. Please make your voice heard. Take action here.

How effective is international aid in helping the people it claims to serve? A new documentary entitled, Heart of the Congo, explores this question and more. In Heart of the Congo, a handful of aid workers try to help Congolese refugees who have lost everything at the end of a five-year civil war. Heart of the Congo premieres in San Francisco on January 28 at the Herbst Theatre. Following the screening, enjoy a reception for Action Against Hunger, and participate in a conversation about humanitarian aid with filmmaker, Tom Weidlinger, Action Against Hunger-USA¹s executive director, Anne-Sophie Fournier, and author Adam Hochschild. Learn how to build beautiful houses and other structures from earth, using a technique called COB. Also called monolithic adobe, cob is made by combining clay, sand, straw, and water, then mixing it with your feet, and molding it with your hands.
Why learn how to build from cob? Why are cob houses better than stick-frame wood houses? 1, you can build one by yourself for really cheap; 2, it's healthy for people, and healthy for the planet; & 3, and best of all, you can sculpt the houses into beautiful, funky shapes!
This is an excellent opportunity to learn the basics of cob building, without having to leave the city. We will be covering siting, design, foundations, walls, and weatherproofing. When you leave the workshop, you should feel confident enough to build a cob structure in your own backyard!

Workshop facilitator David Sheen has been building structures from earth in the U.S., Canada, and Israel since 2001. David apprenticed at the North American School of Natural Building with Ianto Evans, Linda Smiley, and Michael Smith, of the Cob Cottage Company, the pioneers of 20th century cob and authors of The Hand Sculpted House. Currently, David is teaching cob building in the Bay Area and working to revitalize West Oakland with ecological and artistic place-making projects. Several other experienced Bay Area natural builders will co-facilitate the workshop.

Fr. Jean-Juste is one of Haiti's most respected human rights advocates. On Wednesday, October 13, 2004, Haitian police forcibly entered the St. Clare Catholic Church Rectory in Port-au-Prince and arrested him without a warrant while he was feeding 600 hungry children a meal his congregation serves twice/week. He was imprisoned and then released seven weeks later as a result of an outpouring of international pressure. Fr. Jean-Juste is a prominent activist for social justice and the rights of immigrants in Haiti and the United States. He has been one of Haiti's most eloquent, persistent and influential voices for peace over the past two decades.

On February 16, 2005, the world's first global warming treaty will
become effective. The treaty requires industrialized countries to
limit, by 2008-2012, their annual emissions of greenhouse gases to
the atmosphere to 5.2 percent below 1990 level of emissions.
The United States is the largest emitter of greenhouse gases in the
world. Governmental leaders of the U.S. did not ratify the Kyoto
Treaty. Consequently, the United States is not subject to the
requirements of the Kyoto Treaty. Seventy-one countries ratified the
treaty, as of January 20, 2005.
Meanwhile, Earth's globally averaged land, ocean and atmospheric
temperatures have continued to increase, especially since about 1980.
Scientists have reported that temperatures across the globe rose an
average of 1.1 degree Fahrenheit over the past century, with the rate
of change since 1976 at roughly three times that over the past 100
years. A large majority of the world's scientists attribute the last
30 years of warming to rising accumulations of heat-
trapping "greenhouse gases" in the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases such
as carbon dioxide - the most abundant of the greenhouse gases -
remain suspended in the atmosphere upwards of 100 years, with each
year's emissions accumulating with the previous and the subsequent
years of emissions.
In 2003, U.S. emissions of greenhouse gases totaled 6.94 billion
metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent, which was 0.7 percent
higher than 2002's total U.S. emissions and 13.4 percent higher than
1990's total emissions of 6.12 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide
equivalent (U.S. Energy Information Administration, "Emissions of
Greenhouse Gases in the United States 2003", December 2004).

# Interdependance Day Week End - A New Global Holiday Launch

We are inviting together a team of like-minded souls who wish to cooperate to produce an amazing global transformational event in mid-March.
Interdependance Day is a celebrating of the inherent connection of All That Is and the Expression of a Universal Culture based on the realization that All is Related and Mutual. We are inviting Creators of all type to join together to make a most Inspiring Evocation of our Collective Spirit.
Core to Buddhism is the realization that everything arises as an interdependent whole, that there is no separation. It is this illusion of separation that is the source of suffering, the ills of the world or "samsara". Realization and Embodiment of Interdependence is in like measure core to Our Original Expression.
To this end we have recently started a new tribe, the "Interdependence Day" tribe to coordinate the creation of this event. You are invited to join us, too.
Our tribe format is based a self-organizing model/experiment using tribe.net, as a collaborative "software" venue to organize and implement the launch in March of Interdependance Day.
