Please join us for the grand opening of Encounter Studio, a new art/performance space in Potrero Hill. We're building a small theater and sound studio in a live/work space. The building used to be a soap factory, now it's all offices except for one other artist collective: False Profit are our neighbors.
Although the theater isn't finished yet, we have renovated the space enough to hold parties, film screenings, and music performances. Our 1,000 sq. ft. performance area can easily support an audience of 50 or more, with high-end video projection in a comfortable atmosphere. Now it's time to celebrate!
In the earlier part of the night we will have an artists' salon featuring our own work. Simran will have his "Haunted Garden" sound installation running. Hallie will perform interactive improv with audience participation. I'll show some of my evil mind control video art. There will be a couple other surprises along the way.
After midnight, there will be partying and dancing until whenever. We'll provide snacks and some alcohol, but it might not be a bad idea to bring reinforcements.

BART runs around the clock during the October 15th weekend

BART trains run Friday night through Saturday morning & Saturday night through Sunday morning
For the first time since the Millennium, BART trains will be running around the clock during the October 15th weekend to make sure Bay Area residents and workers can get between the East Bay and San Francisco while Caltrans shuts down all eastbound lanes on the Bay Bridge for overnight earthquake retrofit work.
Normally BART service ends around midnight. However, this weekend BART trains will zip back and forth across the Bay from Friday night through Saturday morning and then again on Saturday night through Sunday morning. The service will only be hourly, so please download the timetable of scheduled service.

HISTORY OF ALL NIGHT SERVICE
The last time BART offered overnight train service was between December 31, 1999 through January 1, 2000 for the Millennium celebrations.
Ironically, the time previous to that was also because of Bay Bridge construction work. BART was a lifeline for commuters and the economy after the October 17, 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake collapsed a portion of the bridge?s upper deck, shutting it down for a month while crews repaired the bridge. BART ran 24-hours a day for nearly the entire time the bridge was down.
WHY BART DOESN?T HAVE 24 HOUR SERVICE
BART does not provide regular 24-hour service because many essential maintenance activities can only take place when the system is shut down. This maintenance work is essential for both operational safety reasons and to ensure the longterm reliability of the system.
BART supplemental and extended service during the October 15th weekend has be made possible by funding from Caltrans.

A crucial element to slowing the military machine is helping individual GIs get out of the military! As CCCO has done since 1948, we are supporting individuals in their resistance and opposition to war. In particular, we are standing with a group of people —GI’s whose questioning and resistance are increasing and becoming better known
The GI Rights hotline is staffed by a network of organizations throughout the United States and in Germany. In 2004 we received 32,000 calls from people who needed help obtaining discharge from the military. Increasingly, people are also using email to contact us and we sent about 3,000 emails in response to email queries.
The hotline provides accurate, comprehensive, and objective information on draft registration, military discharges, civil rights in the military, and involuntary activation and deployment of military personnel. The work we do and the information we disseminate are known to enlisted people in numbers far greater then the thousands with whom we communicate personally.
We are seeking additional military counselors to volunteer on the Hotline. Tasks include answering live phone calls, returning phone messages, responding to email inquiries, and making referrals to relevant organizations and individuals. Volunteers make an initial one- year commitment of at least 2 hours of service per week.

Francisco's very own City of the Dead, so you can meet the living and

You're invited to the Italian Cemetery to get to know your local
dearly departed, pay your respects, and learn Tombstone Hold 'Em-the
secret poker game you can only play in a cemetery.
Instructions
1. Arrive at the Italian Cemetery (540 F Street, Colma, CA 94014, 2
blocks from Colma BART station) on Saturday October 15 between 1:30
PM and 2:00 PM.
2. Look for your host near the main entrance, under the white arch.
She'll be holding a deck of cards. She will have further instructions
and supplies for you.
3. Bring a single flower to place on a grave to show some respect,
and to signal that you're one of us.
4. Take a few minutes to explore the cemetery. Look for any poker
chips left on tombs. You'll need these to play.
5. Be sure to look for the grave of someone you can prove died on
your birthday. You can use that tombstone as a Joker during the game.
6. Tombstone Hold 'Em Tournament begins at 2 PM. Here's a tip: learn
the rules (http://www.lastcallpoker.com/allin/rules.aspx) before you
come. We'll have instructions on hand for any friends you bring along.
7. For non-poker players, there will be other creative, playful
things to do. And expect a few surprises.
8. The winner is crowned at 3 PM. No fancy prizes, but lots of

everyone can keep the chips they earn as a souvenir.

The story of HornAfrik, the first community TV and radio station in
Somalia. A decade after the disastrous US humanitarian intervention
in Somalia, HornAfrik, the first independent TV and radio station in
war-ravaged Mogadishu, was established by three brave Somali-
Canadians in the face of chaos and devastation. Their vision was to
forge a path to peace through freedom of expression, impartial news,
and debate. The station's talk shows have become incredibly popular,
providing a unique way for Mogadishu's marginalized residents,
including women's groups and human advocates, to speak out without
being silenced. It is a venture not without danger; HornAfrik has
been attacked more than once by angry warlords displeased with the
station's content. Despite the perils, the founders of HornAfrik
continue their broadcasts, creating a blueprint for the role of the
media in times of conflict.
Speaker: Natoschia Scruggs
Fulbright Scholar to Senegal, Natoschia will speak about the media,
war and the breakdown of civil society. Originally from NYC, she has
lived in Cote d'Ivoire for one year and has traveled throughout 8
African countries. She is currently a doctoral student in African
Diaspora Studies at UC Berkeley, and holds degrees international
relations (BA), political science and African Studies (MA) and
African American Studies (MA). She is also an intern with the Amnesty

Please join us for a forum discussion on sex-positive parenting.
This workshop is intended for parents who have chosen to be sex-positive and to share sex-positive values with their children. We live in a society with many mixed messages about sexuality. Many of us rejected our parents’ values in order to become sex-positive people. Now, raising children of our own, we find we are unsure how to communicate our values to our children and what information we should share or not share.
Because the event will be an open forum, we will address whatever issues individuals bring to the table. However, some of the general issues we are sure to discuss are polyamory; Paganism and alternative spirituality; interfaith unions; bisexual, homosexual, and heterosexual partnerships.
This event has arisen out of the concerns individuals have brought to the Center for Sex and Culture and the ideas of our current intern, Michelle Mueller. Michelle, student of the Graduate Theological Union, has a special interest in developing mentorship and sexual education programs for Pagan youth. Michelle co-founded a student Pagan group at Bryn Mawr College and was Assistant Coordinator for Teen Programs at Circle Sanctuary’s Free Spirit Gathering 2005. In the 2005-2006 academic year, Michelle intends to volunteer at UC Berkeley as a religious advisor for Wiccan and Pagan undergraduates. Although Michelle is not a parent, she enjoys mediating between Pagan or sex-positive parents and their teenagers.

A Legal Defense Seminar for Adult Entertainers, featuring Harvard educated criminal defense attorney Katya Komisaruk, will be held at the Center For Sex & Culture on Sunday October 16th.
WHO CAN ATTEND:
This is a private seminar that will be limited to 30 screened participants. You must be a sex worker/adult entertainer to attend this seminar. WHAT YOU WILL LEARN:
This seminar will teach adult entertainers about the laws of California as they relate to the adult entertainment business. Subjects covered include: what the laws are so that you don’t break them, how to handle encounters with law enforcement agents, safety tactics during arrest, how to use your right to remain silent and see a lawyer, resisting interrogation, arrest and search warrants, rights of non-US citizens, and reporting police misconduct. There will be lectures, Q&A sessions, role playing drills, and you will also get one-on-one time with the attorney who can review your personal ad and website copy.
COST & PAYMENT:
The cost of this all day seminar including lunch is $100. Lunch will be a catered vegetarian, vegan and raw food. You may purchase your ticket by cash or credit/debit card in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door and the event is expected to sell out.

Harold Brown, former cattle farmer turned farm animal advocate featured in the new, award-winning documentary "Peaceable Kingdom," will speak about the deleterious impacts of factory farming on the environment and the alternatives that exist. He will also present the benefits of moving away from animal agriculture to a plant-based agricultural production system.
Harold Brown was raised on a cattle farm in Michigan and spent half of his life in animal agriculture. Now, having metamorphosed from a "beef" farmer to a vegan farm animal advocate, he works to encourage farmers to adopt sustainable farming practices and "Put the Family Back in Farming."

Hookahdome is a seven-year-old Burning Man theme camp that offers a full-service hookah lounge with talented entertainment, a fire-lit Esplanade performance and dance area, and the Magic Flying Carpet art car. We have become happy members of the neighborhood around the 3:30 to 5:00 side of town. At Burning Man 2005, Hookahdome served thousands of BRC citizens, and hosted some of the most attended get-togethers and live performances.
This year, our artists and engineers continue to perfect the experience we'll offer up to the city. This party is intended to help fund some of the fantastic innovations we have up our sleeve for Burning Man 2006. All proceeds from your ticket price will directly help fund the expense of exhibiting the Hookahdome again in all her glory.

From French director Henri-Georges Clouzot. Capturing the moment and
the mystery of creativity, for this film, Picasso created 20
artworks, ranging from playful black-and-white sketches to widescreen
color paintings. Using inks that bled through the paper, Picasso
rapidly created fanciful drawings that Clouzot was able to film from
the reverse side, capturing their creation in real time. This month
commemorates Picasso's 124th birthday.
9PM: FELA KUTI - MUSIC IS THE WEAPON (1982)
Fela Anikulapo Kuti (1938-1997) was a Nigerian colossus, a prolific
singer-composer who played keyboards, trumpet and saxophone. Fela hit
upon what he called Afro-beat, a seductive, explosive groove wherein
highlife and Yoruba folklore were fused with American jazz, R&B and
funk. This new sound, charged with searing anti-colonial lyrics,
became the vehicle for political dissent. Fela was repeatedly
harassed and jailed due to his political views. By the time of his
death from an AIDS-related illness, he had transformed African music
for all time. This film overflows with fervent live performances,
frank interviews and exudes genuine Lagos street credo circa 1982.

a Florida-based farmworker organization
(Gerardo has worked in the fields since age 11, first as a peasant
farmer in Zacatecas, Mexico, and later in the fields of Florida. He
joined the CIW shortly after his arrival in the U.S. in 2000 and has
become a dynamic community organizer and nationally-recognized human
rights leader.)
BACKGROUND:
After nearly four years of a tenacious and growing national boycott,
Taco Bell and its parent company, Yum Brands, finally agreed to take
responsibility for the sweatshop conditions in their supply chain.
On March 8th of this year, Taco Bell signed an historic agreement to
"work with the CIW to improve working and pay conditions for
farmworkers in the Florida tomato fields."
This ground-breaking agreement set several important precedents,
including the first-ever direct, ongoing payment by a fast-food
industry leader to farmworkers in its supply chain; the first-ever
enforceable Code of Conduct for agricultural suppliers in the fast-
food industry (which includes the CIW as part of the investigative
body for monitoring worker complaints); and market incentives for
agricultural suppliers willing to respect their workers' human
rights, even when those rights are not guaranteed by law.
The boycott victory was celebrated by supporters from former
President Jimmy Carter to former guitarist for Rage Against the
Machine, Tom Morello, who said of the agreement, "This is a major
victory for the workers and demonstrates that by standing up and
standing together, we can overturn any injustice. By standing up and
standing together, we can change to world." The US. Congressional
Hispanic Caucus remarked, "This is a truly historic agreement,
marking perhaps the single greatest advance for farm workers since
the early struggles of the United Farm Workers."

poorest towns took on a corporate giant larger than McDonald's...and
won! Learn how they organized an aggressive national campaign of
creative actions and mass mobilizations that never wavered, grew
stronger with the commitment of youth, religious and union allies,
and finally convinced the world's largest restaurant company to
change the way it does business forever.

On Friday, October 21, 2005, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosts the
monthly Third Friday's Art Reception in his City Hall office, Room
282. This month's featured artist is Tim Gaskin.
Tim Gaskin is a third-generation San Franciscan, pop artist, and
television and print journalist. He has been influenced by left-coast
politics, the sexual revolution, television, magazines, fashion, the
HIV/AIDS pandemic, local art, and dance music. Gaskin uses his art to
transform and enhance the environment of others. His work has been
called "inspired pop art, each seeking the balance of nature and flow
of energy with just the right mix." His Superstar Collection includes
strikingly vibrant Warhol-esque portraits of contemporary pop-culture
icons. Gaskin is also the producer and host of Comcast's first LGBT
show OUT Spoken.

Chet Helms was one of the founding fathers of the psychedelic movement from the 1960's. As promoter for the "Family Dog", Chet developed the concept of the modern rock concert and was one of the founding fathers of the 1960's peace movement that swept the nation and made waves around the world. Chet was also the catalyst that brought together Janis Joplin with Big Brother and the Holding Company, which helped shape the San Francisco sound. Without Chet Helms, as many have said, there would be no Grateful Dead, no Jefferson Airplane, no Big Brother and the list goes on and on. He promoted other acts like the Charlatans, the Great Society, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Peter Tosh, The Clash and countless others. Chet Helms continued promoting pivotal concerts through four decades. In the 60's at the Avalon Ballroom, Family Dog at the Beach, S.F. Golden Gate Park, Denver Dog, and Crystal Ballroom in Portland.
