Book of the Week
The Butterfly Boy.- Laurance Yep based this book on the writings of Chuang
Tzu, sometimes called the Butterfly Philosopher, who lived in China during the
troubled times at the end of the fourth century B. C. This is a tale of a boy
who sometimes thinks he is a butterfly. His strange behavior puts him in
uncomfortable situations and he is often ridiculed by others. When his homeland is
invaded by a cruel lord, his people live in fear. Odd as he is, the boy does
not fear the lord--only laughs at him. The lord's first thought is to punish the
boy, but then he comes to believe the boy is either a prophet or madman and
he lets him go. Winter arrives early and the lord and his soldiers perish in
the snow. Following this, the villagers come to honor and respect the boy.

Other cities where the festival-styled event will tour include New York, Los
Angeles, Chicago, Atlanta and Washington DC. Among the celebrities who have
confirmed their participation is Afeni Shakur (activist and mother of Tupac
Shakur); others to be announced at a later date.
MansMark Africa is creating a day of action where participants will be
encouraged to play an active role to stop the violence in their communities and
throughout the world. Attendees will also learn about child abuse and child
abduction and how to make a difference each day. Drum Call invites the public to
join this compassionate gathering of drummers and peace activists. The event will
feature drummers from a wide variety of regions, prominence and influence -
together playing songs inspired by Babatunde Olatunji.
The mission of the event is two-fold: 1) to promote solutions that will stop
violence, and 2) to raise funds for missing and abused children. Several crime
prevention organizations will be on hand to educate participants on their
daily role as community members working together to solve these problems.
The event will include numerous activities geared toward children: the
creation of child identification cards, introductory drumming classes, finger
printing, inflatable jumpers and other activities.
Drum Call will start with an opening drum roll, prayer, refreshments and the
opening performances. This will be followed with a word from mothers who have
lost their children due to acts of violence and mothers of missing and abused
children. Then, at exactly 1 pm Pacific Time, we invite all drummers across
the globe to beat their drums in synch as a symbolic gesture of support for
victims of violence and the plight of all missing and abused children and their
families.
Mission / Purpose
All participants in the Drum Call to Stop the Violence Save the Children
event, including guests, organizations, sponsors and vendors, are expected to
leave the event fully committed to help to stop violence, aid in the recovery of
missing children, and protect abused children. The event will raise awareness
and funds for organizations dedicated to promoting peace and the recovery of
missing and abused children.
