Berkeley Farmers' Market Fall Fruit Tasting with Cooking Demonstrations � An opportunity to sample for free, all at one table, the whole delicious range of Fall fruit varieties at the Berkeley Farmers' Market. (Apples, European pears, Asian pears, persimmons, etc.). Cooking demonstrations starting at 11am with chef Amy Murray of Venus Restaurant, Berkeley. Amy Murray is a twelve year veteran of local, seasonal, organic cuisine and a member of the Slow Food Movement. Venus is a staunch supporter of California local, seasonal organic cuisine, with frequently changing seasonal menus. Amy says, "It is an honor to serve in the world of food. Traveling and tasting the distinct cuisines of the world is my biggest passion. I strive to feature the jewels of the moment, as brought to us through seasonal, organic farming, and to bring out the highlights of those flavors, incorporating what I have learned from other cuisine cultures of the world." Mary Vance, certified nutrition consultant, will present a cooking and nutrition demonstration. Mary specializes in flavorful dishes made with healthful, organic, and seasonal ingredients. Presentation: "The Green Scare" � Reminiscent of the Red Scare in the 50's when suspected communists and dissidents were hauled before hearings and asked to talk about their friends and colleagues, for the past year the federal government has been convening grand juries, sending FBI agents to knock on activists' doors, and has issued indictments on trumped-up charges in a round-up of environmental radicals on an unprecedented scale. Ostensibly targeting the Earth Liberation Front (ELF) acts of sabotage, many people unconnected with ELF are being targeted, and people are being sent to jail just for declining to answer grand jury questions. One such activist in Oregon remains in jail five months after receiving a subpoena, without being accused of anything. This is the first of the "Agitate, Educate. Films: "Bum's Paradise" and "Up Close & Toxic" � Shown in conjunction with the East Bay Environmental Training, "Bum's Paradise" tells the story of the Albany landfill community. After decades of being a garbage dump, The Albany landfill closed in 1986. Nature slowly reclaimed the land and various homeless men and women moved in. They built dwellings, became a community and lived free from the public scorn and scrutiny that commonly plagues the homeless in America. Workshop: "Home Greywater" � Learn about and help create the first permitted residential greywater system at the Berkeley Ecohouse. Learn about the principles and process of safely irrigating with waste water. Teacher; John Russell, greywater designer. Hand's on: bring gloves. Book Signing for "Mad Sheep" at Berkeley Farmers' Markets � The great local organic farmers and prepared food vendors of the Saturday Berkeley Farmers' Market plus a book signing with Linda Faillace author of MAD SHEEP: The True Story Behind the USDA's War on a Family Farm (Chelsea Green Publishing). Larry and Linda Faillace saw a niche they could fill by importing high-yield dairy sheep from Europe, selling their lambs, and making cheese from their milk. Linda and Larry carefully researched and untangled all the regulations regarding the importation of sheep and soon had a thriving entrepreneurial business. Then, one day, corporate greed and government corruption colluded to bring their operation to a screeching halt. Mad Sheep is Linda Faillace's outrageous true story of how the USDA slaughtered her family's sheep to assuage fears over mad cow disease even though no sheep in the world has ever contracted mad cow disease. While raising three children with her husband, Larry, Linda Faillace worked as a secretary, store clerk, lab technician, songwriter, piano teacher, and astrologer, before embarking on a labor of love in sheep farming and cheese making. Sacred Site / Shellmound Peace Walk in the North Bay and East Bay � Indian People Organizing for Change along with Vallejo Intertribal/SSP&RIT invites all to join in a journey of walking and prayer to remember our ancestors that lived on this land for thousands of years. Traditional Native American leaders and Nipponzan Myohoji Buddhist will lead the walk. We will walk and pray with our ancestors in areas where Shellmounds and sacred sites have been desecrated by development. Needed for the walk: a good attitude, your own water bottle, utensils, bowl, plate and cup. sleeping bag and small tent if you have one (we will be camping at least one or two nights), clothes for all types of weather, including rain gear, money for Ferry, (Oakland to San Francisco) and any other incidentals that you may need. East Bay Environmental Training Program � The East Bay Environmental Training program is a six-week immersion course designed to provide participants with a sustainability and justice framework for understanding local and global environmental issues. The course will introduce participants to the urban environment of the East Bay, as well as to local organizations and people active in social change work. Sessions will include presentations by speakers, as well as field trips, discussions, course readings, student projects, and an evening film series. The course begins with an introduction to ecology, environmental justice, sustainability, and environmental health. Subsequent session topics will include food and agriculture; water; air and toxics; waste and consumerism; energy, transportation, and global warming; housing, land use, and sprawl. We'll look at both the problems we face and the solutions people are working on or thinking up. Our hope is that participants leave having become activated, inspired, and better equipped to engage as advocates for protecting and restoring the environment and its people. Call to reserve a spot! Voter Registration Party: "The League of Pissed Off Voters" � The League of Pissed Off Voters and SF's hottest Hip Hop and Reggae/Dancehall DJ's will light up Club Six in the spirit of education, progress, and the power of our generation. Get down to "The Foundation," the League's second annual night of hip-hop, education and participation. These awards were created to celebrate the people, organizations and initiatives that are improving our community's environmental health, economic vitality, and quality of life. Awards will be presented at Green Gathering III, a reception on the evening of Thursday, 11/9/06 in the Lipman Room of Barrows Hall on the UC Berkeley Campus. More than 150 business, government, community and education leaders, as well as local media, will attend. Bioneers 17th Annual Conference � The Collective Heritage Institute, AKA Bioneers, was founded by Kenny Ausubel in 1990. Bioneers was conceived to conduct educational and economic development programs in the conservation of biological and cultural diversity, traditional farming practices, and environmental restoration. As Paul Hawken has noted, sustainability is simply the midpoint between destruction and restoration. The goal of Bioneers is restoration, addressing the interdependent array of economics, jobs, ecologies, cultures, and communities. Location: Marin Center, 10 Avenue of the Flags, San Rafael.
