Jack Rabbit Speaks
Volume 11 Issue 3
December 23, 2006
On and off info at the bottom...
Greetings readers! It's been a while, yes it has. We love it how when we
don't post for a few weeks, you guys worriedly ask us if you've been
removed from the list by accident... makes us feel just swell to hear
that you miss your Burning Man news. But fear not! Remember, the JRS is
an irregularly produced newsletter, (keyword: irregularly) so you
haven't missed anything...this one's issue #3 for the 2007 event cycle,
just in time to send you off with a little playa-dream-inducing food for
thought to carry you through those long hours "talking" politics with
your Uncle Ralph while lounging around full of egg nog in your sexy new
handknitted snowflake sweater from Cousin Barb...or whatever you're doing.
It being the end of the year, experienced burners are starting to get a
little antsy, since mid-January's our traditional start date for ticket
sales. There have been some questions...the answer is January 17, but
for now that's all we can tell you, except watch this space for some
writing on the subject. We've also had folks asking us about how to get
tickets to "Sea of Dreams" on NYE...it isn't a Burning Man event, but
over the years this fab-a-lous Anon Salon party has become "the" hot
ticket for New Years for burners in San Ferdisco, which must be why
y'all keep asking us for information. You're welcome.
It's also time to open up the grant cycle for Burning Man art for 2007's
"Green Man", and we can't wait to see all the incredible, thoughtful,
exciting art that's going to be created this time...and the sooner the
better, since folks have a bad habit of waiting to submit until the very
last minute...get a jump on your creative jones and start thinking up
your proposal now. And hey, if you haven't read the theme this year,
*really* read it, may we suggest that now is a fabulous time?
http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm07_theme.html .
OK, enough. Let's get started, AND let's wrap 2006 with a couple of
looks back at photos from the '06 event, under BRC news...and then let's
look forward to one of the most powerfully fascinating Burning Man
events yet! We'll be back tomorrow with a second special-issue JRS
including a special announcement about the future of fire on San
Francisco's Ocean Beach, so be sure to check your email before you head
out into the holiday week.
Posted live from snowy Salt Lake City...happy holidays!

2007 ART GRANT PROPOSAL CYCLE OPEN
Hey future Burning Man artist...it's time! Burning Man is now accepting
art proposals for the 2007 event, and will be doing so until February 1,
2007. Your submission to apply for a grant must follow our Submission
Guidelines (which we've just revised!)
http://www.burningman.com/installations/art_guidelines.html
Please read these carefully and be sure to submit everything required;
we will not accept incomplete proposals for review. Please do not wait
until the last 24 hours of the deadline to submit your proposal. The
grant committee will be able to review your proposal much more carefully
if you send it in during the month of January, or in early February.
More time to consider your proposal results in a much better
understanding of it.
This year's theme, the Green Man, is detailed here:
http://www.burningman.com/art_of_burningman/bm07_theme.html .
Although theme-relatedness is not a requirement, we tend to favor work
that connects with our annual theme. This year work using alternative
technology, recycled materials and clean energy is highly encouraged.

CONFESSIONS OF A BURNING MAN:
2002's "Confessions of a Burning Man" is now available at the Burning
Man marketplace on DVD.
"A visual and auditory journey, Confessions of a Burning Man is a
feature-length documentary/art film that follows four first-timers--as
they experience Burning Man. Their personal journeys are windows into
the heart of Black Rock City. With stories captured in 2001 and 2002 by
an international team of filmmakers on over 100 hours of film and video
footage, Confessions of a Burning Man is a unique contemporary spiritual
quest set in an epic desert location."
Confessions is also notable as the first Burning Man film to offest its
environmental footprint through the purchase of carbon offsets.

BLACK ROCK ARTS FOUNDATION UPDATE 2006
Leslie Pritchett of the Black Rock Arts Foundation has an update for us
at the end of the year - check out what BRAF's been up to and how you
can get involved in its exciting mission!
"It's been a big year for our little Black Rock Arts Foundation, an
independent non-profit formed just five years ago to bring the art and
spirit of Burning Man to places beyond Black Rock City. In 2006 we made
great strides in establishing the foundation as a vehicle for social
renewal and as a means of creating new opportunities for interactive art
to flourish in communities across the country and around the world.
Please consider a year-end donation in support of an exciting roster of
interactive art projects now underway and planned for the coming year!
It's easy to donate online at: http://www.donatetoblackrockarts.org
In 2006, we supported 12 new public and civic arts projects, including:
* 'Quadrapass', a community-crafted, fire-burning sculpture being made
for the 'Africa Burns' festival in Cape Town, South Africa.
* the public exhibitions of Michael Christian's 'Flock', Dan Das Mann
and Karen Cusolito's 'Passage', and Pepe Ozan's 'Monicacos de Esperanza'.
* 'ScrapEden', a series of community-built sculptures made from
reclaimed materials and designed to inspire people to recycle and reuse.
A call for proposals for the pilot project, ScrapEden SF, will be coming
your way shortly and seeds are already spreading through regional groups
around the country.
For more info about these and many other foundation supported public art
projects, please check out our web site:
http://www.blackrockarts.org
This year we set a bold fundraising goal of $250,000, and we're nearly
there! We received our first major government grant from the SF
Department of the Environment to pilot the ScrapEden project and another
major grant from the James Irvine Foundation so that we could extend our
Civic Arts program to new communities within California. In 2007, we
will expand our grant programs and develop new opportunities for artists
and community groups interested in creating interactive public art. The
momentum we have generated cannot continue without your help.
Please support the Black Rock Arts Foundation with a tax-deductible
year-end contribution:
* Make a Donation
* Become a Member or Give a Gift Membership to a Friend
* Donate Stock or a Vehicle (for info call the office at 415.626.1248)
You can donate online at: http://www.donatetoblackrockarts.org
Or, send contributions to:
Black Rock Arts Foundation
1900 3rd Street, First Floor
San Francisco, CA 94158
The Black Rock Arts Foundation is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit,
Federal Tax Exempt ID #91-2130056, and donations are tax-deductible.
Thank you very much for your great help and support!

BURNCAST MAYHEM
BURNcast is the podcast devoted to the Burning Man community...the
latest green-related BURNcast is up and available:
BURNcast #022
http://nospectators.com/index.php?page=burncast
Length: 21:34
Size: 10.5 mb
In this episode we speak to Los Angeles Decom organizers GeoFrey,
Alayha, Kachina Katrina and Blue about efforts to green LA Decom and how
to look at Burning Man in a greener light. Recorded October 14, 2006.
Kachina Katrina is the force behind the greening of LA Decom. Her main
project is Evolutionary Center ( http://www.evolutionarycenter.net/ ), a
theme camp that has emerged out of the Greening Burning Man movement
that is focused around creating a more sustainable Black Rock City culture.
See how Kachina made LA Decom go green!
http://www.la-burningman.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogsection&i
d=5&Itemid=34
It should be noted that Blue suggested that the rules of the 3-Playa
Community drinking game from drinking to the word "community" to the
word "green". Although we at BURNcast drink to that, we think our
listeners would pass out before they reached the end of this episode.
Needless to say, we're sticking to "community".

FLAME EFFECTS FOR ARTISTS CLASS JAN 6 and 7, 2007: San Francisco
Attention all artists who wish to incorporate fire aspects into your
art...this class is for you!
January 6th and 7th San Francisco will be the site of this exiting
2-day seminar that is designed for the artist who is interested in
incorporating flame effects into their art.
On the first day we will have a classroom day where we will discuss
NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) guidelines including NFPA
54 and 58 the LP gas codes as well as NFPA 160 Flame Effects Before a
Live Audience. We will examine the physical properties of LP gasses
and get some hands on time with fittings and parts. We will finish
the day by taking a look at some typical designs for Flame Effects
including accumulators, free burning effects, pilot lights, etc. We
will have plenty of demonstrations and hands on materials as well as
the legendary clear propane cylinder.
The second day will be a shop day when the Box Shop, one of the Bay
Area's centers for fire artists, will host us. Our helpers will be
members of the Flaming Lotus Girls who are proud sponsors of this
incendiary workshop. With their help we will put what we have learned
to action and create a one of a kind flame effect from what we have on
hand. Write to fuelmaster@gmail.com if you have elements you may like to
incorporate.
This class will be fun for the artist who is thinking of incorporating
a small flame element into their work as well as the more experienced
fire artist wanting to take your work to the next level.
Leading this weekend will be Dave X, Fire Safety Manager for Burning
Man, and his friend Erik Smith Chief Inspector for the State of Nevada
Board for the Regulation of LP Gas. Shop assistance will be provided by
members
of the Box Shop and the Flaming Lotus Girls
The cost of this 2-Day class will be $90.
Printed materials and a crappy but filling lunch of burnt hot dogs and
whatever cheap sodas we can get will be provided, weather permitting.
Come and join us for this weekend to hang out with other fire artists
and have a blast (no pun intended). We have room for 30 and will be
taking walk up registration the day of the event room permitting, but
the class may fill. Send us an e-mail pre-workshop to ensure a place
in this exciting seminar.
Please let us know if you are planning on attending by e-mailing
fuelmaster@gmail.com

ANON SALON SEA OF DREAMS IN SAN FRANCISCO NYE
As always, the biggest, most diverse and culturally creative New
Year's shows are the Sea of Dreams shows raised by our friends
at Anon Salon.
The full city block long Concourse Center may be a little short
on intimate getaway corners, but if you want to kick off the new
year in a spectacular and beautifully costumed fashion, there's
really no other option.
Anon's creative team is pulling in some serious playa-tested
deejays in Tipper and Bassnectar, and on Anon's LunaSea stage,
there is ZAP MAMA both nights - a truly incredible band
featuring the regal Marie Daulne and her powerful band of
afro-groove musicians and vocalists. And from Seattle, the
delightful Circus Contraption.
And another world unto itself is the String Cheese Incident
experience. If you were there last year...
But really, it's the whole thing - the art, the interactivity,
the costumes, the vibe - belly dancers ... burlesque ... circus ...
acrobatics ... stilters ... puppetry ... DIY art making ... sculpture
garden ... art galleries ... interactive art installations... body
painting ... face painting ... live art!! And ring in the New Year
with Circularious, an interplanetary circus opera spectacular!
