Native Americans at risk from toxic military leftovers
More than a century ago, the U.S. slaughtered a bunch of indigenous
folks and put the rest on reservations in the most arid, isolated,
undesirable parts of the American West. A new study shows that many
closed military sites in the Lower 48 states -- including bombing
ranges, weapons-testing sites, and waste dumps -- are close by those
reservations, possibly putting Native Americans at disproportionately
high risk from the toxic materials and unexploded bombs left behind.
According to a Defense Department report, the abandoned bases are
home to "hazardous materials, unexploded ordnance, abandoned
equipment, unsafe buildings, and debris." The feds estimate that
unexploded ordnance contaminates up to 50 million acres in the U.S.
and, at current rates, would take centuries to clean up. Seems
environmental racism isn't confined to low-income urban areas.

CALL TO ACTION: Moving the Agenda for California Women 2005
SBC Media Center 370 Third Street (at Harrison) SF
http://globalexchange.org/getInvolved/bayarea.php?uid=3367
Opening Reception, Circle of Courage Award to House Minority Leader
Nancy Pelosi, and a Conversation with a panel of California Women
Legislators Saturday, December 4, 2004, 8:30 am – 5:30
-Reviewing the status of California women and girls for Beijing + 10
-Crafting a 2005 Strategic Plan for California women and girls
Join with a group of women leaders, representing California-based
grassroots organizations, women’s commissions, elected women from all
over the state, and special guests working with the global women’s
community to adopt a 2005 California-focused action plan for addressing
the issues facing women and girls. Using the 1995 International
Platform for Action, adopted in 1995 by 189 countries in Beijing as a
guide, participants will assess California’s progress towards meeting
the goals of the global plan and develop strategies for moving forward
in the coming year.
The California Women’s Agenda, a project of the Women’s Intercultural
Network (WIN), convened similar meetings in 1996, which created the
first CAWA State action plan. In the year 2000, CAWA submitted a
(Beijing + 5) document to then Secretary of State Madeleine Albright
for inclusion in the national progress report forwarded by the Clinton
Administration to the United Nations. Another report to the UN is due
in March of 2005 and CAWA and the state Commission on the Status of
Women have joined together for this CALL TO ACTION to provide a vehicle
for the participation of more women and girls in developing a
meaningful report.
Check the websites of the CAlifornia Women’s Agenda http://www.win-cawa.org
and the Commission on the Status of Women http://www.statusofwomen.ca.gov

special guests. Register on-line NOW, or please send an e-mail to the

# Fri Dec 3 SF Golden Gate Park Stroll/Beginners' Delight
/Bats Galore in San Francisco 6:45 p.m.
Cast off the dreaded work week and come seek a mysterious partner in
this winter eve's outing, wandering through SF's Golden Gate Park as
we celebrate the first US flag raising, Mitsuo Fuchida's birth, and
the first neon tonight, in a level hike that should take random
directions before we adjourn to our optional liquid and/or solid
repast at a local coffee house. No guarantees on mating, but
passable weather and good company is practically guaranteed. We'll
break somewhere to sip beverages at an appropriate location, and look
for bats flying over a lake. Flashlights, beverages in thermoses,
anything else you tend to need in the dark, and sturdy footwear not
bad ideas. Distance and difficulty perfect for beginners. Rain
doesn't cancel.
DIRECTIONS: If you opt out of self-carpool location #6 at 5:30 p.m.,
meet us under the stone lions at the SE corner of Fulton and 8th
Aves. at 6:45. From the south, 280, take Hwy 1/19th Ave. exit, stay
in right lanes at the 19th Ave./Juniperro Serra split to continue up
J. Serra to Sloat, left and continue to the Great Hwy, right. Go
past the park and the remodeled windmill and turn right on Fulton.
Fulton is the northern border of Golden Gate Park and extends from
the ocean to the Opera House. Full directions, maps, etc., at

# 12/4: Protest Animal Cruelty! (pacifica)
Chickens are inquisitive and interesting animals who are thought to be
as intelligent as cats, dogs, and even primates. When in their natural
surroundings, rather than on factory farms, they form friendships and
social hierarchies, recognize one another, care for their young, and
enjoy a full life of dust-bathing, making nests, roosting in trees, and
more.
PETA is asking KFC to eliminate the worst abuses that chickens suffer
on the factory farms and in the slaughterhouses of its suppliers,
including live scalding, life-long crippling, and painful debeaking.
The more than 750 million chickens killed each year for KFC are
tortured in ways that would result in felony cruelty-to-animals charges
if cats or dogs were the victims, but KFC still refuses to make
changes. As the leader in the chicken industry, KFC has a
responsibility to ensure that the chickens raised for its buckets are
protected from the worst cruelties.

choices may be needed at solstice but probably not. Hike begins at

points for bringing along particularly weird Xmaz gifts for our
