Humanist Hall on Tuesday, December 5th. He will trace the course of the
virus and discuss the role that humans have played in this developing
crisis. The event is free, open to the public, and will include a
question-and-answer session.

What: "Surviving the Next Pandemic: Bird Flu and Other Emerging
Infectious Diseases" with Michael Greger, M.D.
Date: Tuesday, December 5, 2006
Time: 7:00 p.m. - 9:00 p.m.
Place: Humanist Hall, 390 27th Street, Oakland
between Broadway and Telegraph.

Dr. Greger is currently the Director of Public Health and Animal
Agriculture at the Humane Society of the United States. He is author of
the recently released “Bird Flu: A Virus of Our Own Hatching,” and has
presented at the National Institute of Health, the Bird Flu Summit and
the Conference on World Affairs. In August 2006, he participated in a
Department of Homeland Security Pandemic Influenza Tabletop Exercise,
in addition to speaking at countless conferences and universities
worldwide.

In an engaging multimedia presentation, Dr. Greger will discuss how
Avian Flu has evolved from a
harmless intestinal virus in wild ducks into a deadly virus that may
prove to be the next worldwide killer. He will explore what role
humans, through our interaction with animals, have played in the course
of the disease. In the face of this potentially catastrophic pandemic,
Greger will discuss what we can do to protect ourselves and our
families from this virus, and how we can prevent the development of
similar viruses in the future.

"The book is timely, well written, and very comprehensive from any
reader’s perspective."
—Julie Gerberding, M.D., Director, U.S. Centers for Disease Control
