Topic: "Surviving the Next Pandemic: Bird Flu and Other Emerging Infectious Diseases"
Leading public health authorities now predict as inevitable a pandemic of influenza, triggered by bird flu and expected to lead to millions of deaths around the globe. The influenza virus has existed for millions of years as an innocuous intestinal virus of wild ducks. What turned a harmless waterborne duck virus into a killer? In an engaging multimedia presentation, Dr. Michael Greger traces the human role in the evolution of this virus. In the face of the coming pandemic, Dr. Greger reveals what we can do to protect our families and what human society to can do to reduce the likelihood of such potential catastrophes in the future.
Michael Greger, M.D., is a physician, author, and internationally recognized professional speaker on a number of important public health issues. Pet Noir Release Party Tuesday, December 5, 7-9PM
Cartoon Art Museum 655 Mission St @ 3rd / 4th St. SF, CA 94105
The Cartoon Art Museum and Manic D Press are pleased to celebrate the release of "Pet Noir: An Anthology of Strange But True Pet Crime Stories."
This special event is free and open to the public.
Approximately 124 million dogs and cats live in U..S. households‹nearly one pet for every two Americans. It's official -- we love our pets -- but like every love affair, our relationship with our four-legged friends has a dark side.
Pet Noir: An Anthology of Strange but True Pet Crime Stories
Edited by Shannon O'Leary, published by Manic D Press
The notorious San Francisco deadly dog mauling. The infamous Petaluma cat lady. The heartbreaking saga of Leo the Bichon-Frisé's untimely demise at the hands of a savage road-raging lunatic.
Yes, these stories all made headlines around the world, and now Pet Noir: An Anthology of Strange but True Pet Crime Stories explores what happens when our affairs with animals become dangerous liaisons.
Conceived and edited by Shannon O'Leary, and drawn by todayąs finest comic book artists, this innovative, compassionate illustrated anthology sheds fur on some of the most peculiar animal offenses in recent headlines and examines our individual relationships with animals in true stories of oddly humorous and heartbreaking personal pet crimes.
This entertaining, informative comics collection grabs traditional noir storytelling by the tail to take the reader on a vivid ride that exposes America's obsession with true crime (note the popularity of TV shows like Animal Cop: San Francisco) in a darkly comedic approach while raising awareness about critical animal welfare issues. Pet Noir will grab the attention of true-crime fans, pet lovers, animal advocates, vegans, and graphic-novel aficionados.
A portion of the profits from the sales of Pet Noir will be donated to the Animal Legal Defense Fund (www.aldf.org), which protects and advances the interests of animals through the legal system.
Featured Pet Noir artists include Andy Ristaino (The Babysitter), Lev Yilmaz (Tales of Mere Existence), Trevor Alixopolous (Mine Tonight), Eric Saxby, John Isaacson (DIY Silkscreening), August Bournique, Ben Claassen III, Bitter Pie, Fly (PEOPs), Fred Einaudi, Lark Pien (Orchid), Eric Koepfle (Fortune's Bitch), Melanie Lewis (PS Comics), Mary Fleener (Life of the Party), Damien Jay, Jen Feinberg (Little Scrowlie), Joan Reilly (Hi-Horse), MariNaomi (Estrus), N8 Van Dyke (Heavy Metal), Paul Musso, Peter Conrad (Attempted Not Known, Louąs Garage), and Ric Carrasquillo.
"Pet Noir is fantastic! The writing is clever, the artwork original, and the stories proving the old adage that the truth is way stranger than fiction. I loved it!" -- Jane Wiedlin, the Go-Go's
łShannon O'Leary and the artists behind Pet Noir bring gentle life to the often-strange intersections of animal cruelty, our criminal justice system, and the roles played by the media and our own cultural conditioning in responding to crimes involving animals." -- Lisa Franzetta, ALDF

Stop Video Surveillance! - Police Commission Meeting Wed, 12/6
Wednesday, December 6, 2006 5:30 PM
San Francisco City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place
San Francisco, California 94102
The SF Police Commission is voting next Wednesday, December 6, about whether to approve surveillance cameras at 16th and Mission Streets.
The City says the cameras are going up because people who live, work, and walk in San Francisco , want them.
If you don ' t want cameras, please come to the following meeting:
Police Commission Meeting
Wednesday, December 6 at 5:30 p.m.
at San Francisco City Hall,
Room 400, San Francisco, California.
We all want safe communities, but video cameras are just not the solution.
The expanded video surveillance program should be rejected because:
It is ineffective in reducing crime. Study after study demonstrates that video surveillance cameras do not reduce crime or the fear of crime in the long-run. Crime just moves from one corner to another.
It threatens privacy and free speech rights, allowing the government to track what you are doing and where you are going.
It is expensive. The funds proposed for the surveillance cameras could be better spent on more effective crime-reduction measures such as increased foot patrols, community policing, or better lighting.
Please forward this information to others about the meetings and also send an email to the Police Commission at sfpd.commission [at] sfgov.org and let them know you don ' t want cameras.

Free Chocolate by April Banks & Holiday Party 446 Valencia St
The Gallery At Intersection
Free Chocolate by April Banks
December 6, 2006 - February 17, 2007
Gallery Hours: Tues by appt, Wed - Sat, 12 - 5PM
Opening Reception & Holiday Party: Wed Dec 6, 6PM
In her first solo exhibition, Bay Area conceptual
artist April Banks
<http://www.mezostudio.com> examines the intricate
global economy that is
driven by the constantly growing demand for cocoa.
Control of cocoa/cacao
farming has spawned civil wars and caused major
shifts in kinship and
regional economies. Based on years of research and
travel to cacao farms in
Ghana and Cuba and to the New York Board of Trade,
Banks explores cocoa's
global journey from farmer, to trader, to chocolate
lover. In addition to
the new exhibition featuring photography, sculptural
installation, and
graphic design, Banks is collaborating with Bay Area
artists and artisans to
create a "micro chocolate shop" that will offer
products inspired by and
based on chocolate. This ambitious project grapples
with issues of
colonization and slavery, fair trade and
sustainability, and the complex
relationship between the guilt and desire of eating
chocolate.
Intersection for the Arts has an upcoming show and
series of events....

the guilt and desire of

April Banks strives to create work that is
simultaneously beautiful and
uncomfortable. Drawing from her background in
architecture, she began
experimenting with combinations of space,
photography, sound, video and
performance. Through this experience, she found her
voice in installation
art, creating pieces that are visually beautiful yet
ideologically
challenging. Her recent work confronts the
complexity and irony of desire
and guilt and explores our human tendencies and
contradictions for our need
for beauty. Motivated by travel and observation and
immersion into other
cultures, she chooses travel experiences to force a
change of perspective.
Banks has a Master of Science in Environmental
Design from Art Center
College of Design and a Bachelor of Architecture
from Hampton University.
She has exhibited her work in Los Angeles, San
Francisco Bay Area (Yerba
Buena Center for the Arts, Pro Arts Gallery, African
American Museum &
Library of Oakland), Chicago, Minneapolis, and
Cleveland. This exhibition,
Free Chocolate, is her first solo exhibition.

FREE JOSH WOLF EVENT Thursday, December 7th 2006, 7:30
Balazo Gallery, 2183 Mission Street @18th, 415-255-7227 ALL AGES
On December 7th join journalists, activists, and local leaders in calling upon the United States Government to free Josh Wolf from coercive custody. Josh is a San Francisco free-lance journalist being held for his refusal, based on journalistic principles, to turn over to a federal grand jury his news footage from a July 2005 protest. Free press advocates from around the world have called his incarceration unjust and a grave violation of the freedom of the press.
Speakers at this event will include Assemblyman Mark Leno, SF Bay Guardian Publisher Bruce Bruggman and many more. Kevin Epps (Straight Outta Hunters Point) will screen his new short film about Josh and music will be provided by a special guest DJ.
Josh Wolf is well on his way to becoming the longest incarcerated journalist in US history. His case has prompted the Reporters Without Borders to lower the United States' ranking for press freedom nine points to 53rd in the world.
For his commitment to journalistic freedom Josh Wolf has just received the 2006 Journalist of the Year Award from the Society of Professional Journalists. On this occasion he was praised by Assemblyman Mark Leno who commended his "courageous dedication to protecting freedom of the press in our country."
Please join the San Francisco community in supporting Josh Wolf and demanding that Congress pass a Federal Shield Law protecting journalists and freedom of the press. For more information about Josh Wolf go to www.joshwolf.net or contact Andy Blue at andy.blue(at)yahoo.com
Speakers to Include:
Mark Leno, California State Assemblyman
Bruce Bruggman, Editor/Publisher San Francisco Bay Guardian
David Greene, Executive Director, The First Amendment Project
Chris Daly, SF Supervisor
Ross Mirkarimi, SF Supervisor
Jane Kim, SF School Board Commissioner Elect
Sarah Olson, radio producer and independent journalist
Kevin Epps, Filmmaker
Event Sponsors: SF Bay Guardian The Free Josh Wolf Coalition

At a good party, you?ll see dozens of different techniques in action. Which ones are easier? What are they called? How do you learn them? Which players are safe and competent, versus merely flamboyant, or even dangerous?
We cover all the techniques you?re likely to see in a dungeon or be asked to try. For each we include what it looks like, what it feels like for the top and bottom, what it?s really about, safety, equipment, difficulty, and how to learn it.
Coverage includes techniques in ten groups: Bondage, Dominance/submission, Electrical, Fetish, Impact, Medical, Psychological, Role-play, Sensation, and Sex play. Because of limited time, we cannot fully teach every technique, but this program prepares you to select and attend specialized classes in the individual techniques that interest you.

Angela and Iain are officers in the Society of Janus, Dungeon Monitors for SF Citadel and elsewhere, and teach BDSM classes at all levels, at many venues. Their teaching style combines humor and approachability with clarity and thorough research.
Reservations not required. Membership not required. You don't need to bring or wear anything special. If time is tight, you can bring dinner to eat during the class. The class is open to anyone 18 years and older with a sincere, positive, personal interest in BDSM / leather / kink. All roles, genders, and orientations welcome. Sunday Dec. 10- Scott Ritter and Jeff Cohen to Speak on U. S. Targeting Iran and Media Disinformation
Scott Ritter & Jeff Cohen on U. S. Targeting Iran and
Media Disinformation
Olney Hall, the College of Marin, Sunday, December 10 at 2-4 pm
Scott Ritter will talk about Bush’s plans for regime change in Iran as part of the White House strategy to overpower the Middle East. Jeff Cohen will describe the media’s disinformation about Iran and Iraq, including the suppression of Ritter’s appearance on the Donahue show.
Scott Ritter recently authored "Target Iran" and visited the country this fall. He was a senior UN weapons inspector in Iraq from 1991-‘98, which he wrote about in Iraq Confidential published last year. Previously he was a Marine intelligence officer for eight years and conducted arms inspections in the former Soviet Union before providing analysis of Iraq’s missile capacity to Gen. Schawrzkopf during the Gulf War of 1991. “The important thing to know about Scott Ritter is that he was right.” - Seymour Hersh
Jeff Cohen, founder of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting (FAIR), is the author of the recently published "Cable News Confidential: My Misadventures in Corporate Media." He previously worked for MSNBC as on-air commentator and senior producer of Donahue until the show was terminated on the eve of the Iraq war. "Jeff Cohen's dissection of cable TV news is both irresistibly funny and civically painful. It goes from uproarious anecdotes to those that make you wince." - Molly Ivins
After the main presentations, there will be a public forum on how to stop an attack on Iran. The program will begin with live Persian music, and conclude with book signings by both Ritter and Cohen.
The College of Marin is located in Kentfield, two miles west of Highway 101. Olney Hall is on College Ave. just off of Sir Francis Drake Blvd.
Doors open at 1:30. The requested donation will be $10 with COM students admitted free and no one turned away.
The event is sponsored by the Marin Peace & Justice Coalition, Students for Social Responsibility, COM, and U.S. Tour of Duty. It is part of a Bay Area tour of Ritter and Cohen in association with the Don’t Attack Iran Coalition, which includes the American Friends Service Committee, Global Exchange and World Can’t Wait.

What: Introduction to Personal Evolution
When: THURSDAY December 14th 7:00pm to 9:30pm
Where:The Arete Center for Excellence in SF
Is there something stopping you from reaching your full potential?
Something elusive you can’t quite identify? Do you experience
something in the way of you having the kind of life you want and
deserve? Does fear, anger, sadness, shame, guilt or for some, even
grief, weigh you down unnecessarily? Do you often take things
personally? Do you find yourself acting in reaction against, or in
continuation of the patterns your parents demonstrated?
You would like to be free from significantly negative emotional
events from your past? Truly free—to such a degree you are even
grateful for them? Would you like to have a greater understanding of
the power of your mind and the minds of those around you?
Have you attended personal development events and found them useful,
but ultimately unfulfilling? Have you experienced “transformation”,
but found it ultimately unpredictable or unsustainable without a
rigorous community?
Would you be interested in freeing up so much of your essence that
you were able live your life’s purpose—and prosper from it?
If you answered yes to any of that, join me for this free event.

Womens Yule Gathering on Friday, December 15 @ 7pm in SF
Welcome beautiful goddesses!
On Friday night, December 15, you are invited to a beautiful home in
San Francisco to celebrate Yule, the welcoming of the sun's rebirth.
This night, we celebrate Winter Solstice, the longest night of the
year. Tonight, the breath of nature is suspended: all waits while
darkness is transformed into the infant light. We watch for the coming
of dawn, when the Great Mother gives birth to the Child Sun, who is the
bringer of hope and the promise of summer. After tonight, the sun
climbs just a little higher and stays longer in the sky each day. Much
celebration is to be had as the ancestors await the rebirth of the Sun
Child that warms the frozen Earth and made her birth seeds from her
womb.
Please arrive to the gathering at 7pm with a prepared meal for the
potluck(salad and dessert will be taken care of), a towel for the hot
tub, your own plate, cup, and eating utensils, and red, green and white
attire for the holiday season. Also we ask that you bring an article of
clothing wrapped for the gift exchange. And of course, your amazing,
tranformative self. Call Sherry at 510-410-8876 to RSVP and for
directions. We are awake in the night. We turn the wheel to bring in
the light. We call from the sun the womb of night. Blessed Be!
Love and light, Sherry and Molly huggima @ yahoo.com
