Just help save those "FREE" dogs (alameda)
Too many labs "adopt" pets and too many pounds/shelters have no room for all the animals they get, so many are put down before getting a second chance. The AKC has many breed specific rescue societies - we got one of our dogs from them - the link is:
http://www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm
South Bay Purebred Rescue - dedicated to the rescue and placement of purebred dogs and puppies of all breeds. http://www.sbprdogs.org/
There are many other great organizations working to place dogs into HOMES, instead of kennels, labs or pounds. Rocket Dog Rescue is wonderful - their link:
http://www.rocketdogrescue.org/
Pet Rescue and Adoption deals in all sorts of animals. Contact them at:

Smiley Dog Rescue -

A great group helping to save dogs from being put down.
The point is if you take a minute or two on the web, you might find a way to save your pet from an awful & undeserved end.

# New York Underground Thu Mar 10 7:00pm free
The Anatomy of a City
http://www.newyorkunderground.org
City Lights and Laughing Squid are proud to present Urban Exploration (UE) legend Julia Solis reading and presenting images from her book New York Underground. (Routledge 2004)
The worlds' greatest metropolis is also home to the most extensive, mysterious and, only partially plumbed, man made subterranean landscape. Julia Solis has been exploring this world for years and, in her beautifully written and lovingly illustrated volume she shares much of the hard won lore and hidden history she has mined from the depths of Manhattan.
With the publication of her book New York Underground Julia Solis firmly takes her place as a leader in the historical research and documentation of this fascinating subject.
Julia has forged affiliations with some of the country's most compelling figures and groups in the world of UE. Inspired by San Francisco's protean UE group The Suicide Club <http://www.suicideclub.com>, Julia formed the secretive exploration society Dark Passage <http://www.darkpassage.com> in 1998. An officer of Brooklyns' nefarious Madagascar Institute <http://www.madagascarinstitute.com> and an early organizer of The Los Angeles Cacophony Society <http://la.cacophony.org>, Julia was well prepared to embark on a career of exotic exploration.
Co-founder of New York City historical research and preservationist association Ars Subbterenea <http://www.creativepreservation.org> Julia continues to be an inspiration for anyone with the curiosity to wonder what's beneath it all and the courage to take a peek.
Julia has also written a collection of macabre short stories entitled "Scrub Station."
On Sunday, March 6th The San Francisco Chronicle published the following article on Julia Solis and her upcoming talk:
"SUBCULTURE: Going underground - Urban explorer documents the hidden world of speakeasies, sewers and subways" (by Annie Nako, San Francisco Chronicle, Sunday, March 6th, 2005)

# SFLR goes to court! the ultimate thrill...
Hi folks, Here's the skinny on our hearing on Friday:
9 AM, Federal Bldg 450 Golden Gate @ Polk. 19th floor, courtroom 10
This is the last hearing we will have in federal court. The case
stands as follows:
Sara Winslow, US Attorney, is arguing that SFLR broadcasted
illegally, so the FCC was justified in entering a private home and
seizing the radio stuff. SFLR is arguing that the law that the FCC
used to enter and seize, a 19th century maritime law designed to
permit government agents to surprise and board ships carrying
contraband in the harbor, isn't a proper legal basis for raiding a
house, being as a house is not a ship and no illegal drugs or aliens
were found. It's possible that both sides will win! If that
happens, then the judge will decide whether the FCC's case is
stronger than ours...or which is more fundamental, or something like
that. Ideally we will be able to argue our case in front of the
Ninth Circuit where federal policy change is possible.
Come and support your friendly neighborhood radio underdogs!
Ninth Circuit or bust!! -Charlotte

# Friday March 11trh, I'll be showing my Walk Accross America slideshow. It's been a while since i've put on this show -- not since 9 / 11, but I think it's time to dust off the cobwebs and show a different side of Americana that few people living in urban America get to glimpse. So come on down and get a taste for a real life Forest Gump type of adventure. We''ll start promptly at 7:30pm. Hope to see you there.
Location - 889 Walker Ave (East Bay, near Grand lake Theater). On 580, take the Lakeshore Ave. exit, turn left on to Grand Ave, go two blocks, right onto Mandanna (7-11 on corner) and take the first left on to Walker Ave. hard to see 889, so look for 887 (in same building). MAR 12/13 Inspiring Masculine Presence Unleashing Feminine Fire~A Workshop For Men & Women
Oakland Lake Merritt / Grand
http://www.wholebodywisdom.com/workshops/Masculine_Feminine/
"The workshop helps men and women
understand how to improve the way they
come across to the opposite sex in a way
that makes you irresistible in their eyes...
You'll walk out feeling liberated and high."
Technology Executive, San Francisco
"I'm finding my relationship to women
in general has changed. I'm feeling
more comfortable and self-assured.
Feeling how much I love women and
how much women love men."
Craig Cerney
We live in a world that sends us very confusing messages about masculinity and femininity.
In the quest for equality (and in reaction to the harmful and limiting sexism of the 50's), many men & women have felt that the only route is to pretend that they are not only equal, but also the same. This can be a huge loss for both genders and can limit passion and connection in romantic love.
All men & women naturally possess both Masculine & Feminine qualities -- different people have different mixes of each. This workshop helps us find what our intrinsic individual mix is -- and experience the strength and freedom inherent in acting from that authentic place.
Many people erroneously equate masculinity with power that harms, while equating femininity with weakness and accommodation. The result is twofold:
* People may refrain from fully animating their masculinity, because they believe it will necessarily harm or violate others -- when, in reality, any power can be used either to harm or to help.
* People with a natural abundance of feminine energy may adopt a false masculine shell, believing that it's the only way to be powerful -- not realizing that often a more effortless & effective power can flow from their feminine essence.
People are most powerful, effective and free when they can animate both their masculine and feminine aspects from a place of love and openness as opposed to fear and defensiveness.
The goals of the workshop include:
* Challenging & inspiring the masculine to be consciously present, loving & deeply trustable.
* Creating a safe, supportive and inviting space for the feminine to open in full radiance.
* Guiding men and women toward connecting with their authentic selves in ways that feed and free them.
* Supporting participants in having relationships in which each person feels deeply powerful and served by the other.
* Witnessing how a polarity of Masculine & Feminine energy can enhance the chemistry & eroticism of a relationship.
This experiential workshop will be taught using WholeBody Learning. In addition to learning concepts in your mental body -- you'll also experience them in your physical, emotional, intuitive & spiritual bodies -- your "WholeBody." Thus, you'll be better able to fully embody your new-found power & freedom.
This is an "advance practice" workshop. Through talks, Q&A and intensive & extensive experiential practice we'll be gaining the ability to be our most free, powerful and fully-expressed selves -- while faced with some of life's more challenging situations.

# The Irish Republican Socialist Committees of North America's San Francisco
Bay Area chapter will again be participating in the San Francisco St.
Patrick's Day Parade and is once again organising an Anti-Imperialist
Contingent as part of its participation.
The parade is taking place this year on Sunday, March 13th. While we never
have many details this much before the actual parade date, the contingent
will undoubtedly assemble between 10:45 and 11:15 a.m., somewhere south of
Market and, of course, details will be forthcoming once we know them.
The focus of the Anti-Imperialist Contingent this year will again be on
ending the occupation of Iraq and of Ireland, and the slogans we are putting forward are:
British and American Imperialism, Out of Iraq! Out of Ireland!
No War but the Class War!
# Sunday, March 13, join Canopy in a tour of the trees at Gamble Garden. Canopy's Program Director Jana Dilley (me) and Gamble's Director of Horticulture Merrill Jensen will be leading a free Tree Walk. We will meet in front of the Carriage House at 1 p.m. http://www.Canopy.org

# Scratch Video – Revolution Remixed:
A post-modern call to battle, for our planet, for our communities, for our
freedom
Join us for a screening of three radical remixes of popular Hollywood movies
by local film makers. These brief, yet high impact culture jams address
globalization, 9-11, war on terrorism, the industrial military complex,
racism, consumer culture, business as usual, our disconnection with nature
in favor of technology, and more. After the film, there will be a
conversation between the film makers and the audience on the films, scratch
video, and local action in Oakland.

Now, for the first time ever, the hidden prophecies of J.R.R. Tolkien's
classic epic, The Lord of the Rings, are decoded in this accurate re-edit of
Peter Jackson's blockbuster motion picture. Unknownst to many readers, The

Ring of Free Trade includes subtitles of the decoded dialogues in
painstaking detail and the true identities that the story's characters
represent within the prophecy.

Spiritual Economics: Your Natural Abundance is Ready for YOU!
In this perilously materialistic world, we as a collective humanity have lost our respect for money. We are so overcome by fear of lack, fear of scarcity, fear of poverty, that we actually repel prosperity as opposed to manifesting it.
Through Your Natural Abuadance, you will be coached to deeply examine the beliefs and attitudes you harbor towards money, as well as the people, places, and events that have influenced these beliefs and attitudes. We will look at the energetic aspects of money, the spiritual applications of economics, as well as the practical realities of your past, present, and future financial situations.
Once we individually become clear on where we stand with money, including how much money we need to maintain the life we desire, we are no longer merely surviving, we’re thriving! We are letting the money-flow pour through our life without blocking it. That is my intention with this course—assisting you with the manifestation of unapologetically blissful abundance! And perhaps even the realization that less is more!
Energy offering: $25-$33 Come Play, Play, Play!!!

The YLEM Forum, "Art Enlivening Biology," features Jo Hanson, whose
work in combining art and ecology is legendary, Julie Newdoll, a
painter who combines diagrams of biologically active molecules with
images from mythology, and Jonathon Keats' "misapplications of science."
PROGRAM
Artists Restoring the Land
Jo Hanson is a long-time environmental artist, a curator, lecturer,
writer and advocate. Hanson will talk about her work and that of other
artists who try to restore the land. She notes that cold facts do not
produce environmental change in the economy and our personal habits
that are so urgent. "Such a paradigm change occurs in the heart, in
the presence of knowledge. It is the arts that key in the heart. The
rhetoric must be some version of a song of love."
Her alarm about the waste society began with daily cleaning of her
windy block of San Francisco in 1970. She began by making whimsical
sculptures from what she collected, then moved to larger efforts, like
a pioneer artist-in-residence program at San Francisco's waste
disposal company.
Along the Russian River, Hanson's work expanded to include
restoration of native growth, creek and creek bank rehabilitation.
Sadly, she learned that reintroducing native plants does not restore
the self-sustaining ecology it once had. Preventing new destruction is
paramount.
A former San Francisco Arts Commissioner, she has also advised the
Exploratorium artist in residence program and co-curated ecological
exhibitions at venues like the San Francisco International Airport.
She co-produces the Women Environmental Artists Directory, and serves
as art and ecology advisor for EarthLight Magazine and the Bioneers
Conference.
Merging Myth and Macromolecules in Art
Julie Newdoll merges life sciences and mythology in her paintings.
She believes that biological systems and ancient cultures, their
myths, and legends, have evolved in similar ways; that they reflect
each other, and speak from our deepest roots. Inspired by nature on a
small scale, she incorporates the delicate images captured with a
microscope and structures of macromolecules such as DNA, RNA, and
proteins in her compositions.
Her artwork has been featured on numerous journal covers, including
such publications as Nature Reviews Genetics, and art publications
such as Art Business News. In 2005 her work will be shown at the New
York Hall of Science, and the Florence Biennale. She completed a
residency in the Czech Republic with the National Gallery in Prague.
Newdoll earned a B.A. in microbiology from the University of
California at Santa Barbara, and an M.S. in medical illustration from
the University of California at San Francisco.

The God Project
Jonathon Keats will discuss his witty 2004 work,"The God Project,"
featured on the cover of San Francisco Weekly and on KQED's March 2
Spark program. Is science an art? Is art a science? In this talk,
Keats will address these questions by telling about his forays into
genetics and neurology laboratories at UC Berkeley and UC San
Francisco. In "The God Project," he attempted to genetically engineer
God in a petri dish. He'll also describe "Brain Trust" (2003) and his
works that play with non-standard time and distance measurement. His
projects are "thought experiments" that rigorously misapply practices
borrowed from biology, chemistry, and physics (as well as law and
economics). Keats strives to take up where natural philosophy left off
- and to bring others into the process.
Jonathon Keats is a conceptual artist, novelist, and critic. His
conceptual art projects have been featured on the BBC World Service
and he is represented by Modernism Gallery. Additionally, Keats serves
as the art critic for San Francisco Magazine and a columnist for
Artweek. He is the author of the novel The Pathology of Lies (Warner
Books), and the forthcoming Lighter Than Vanity (Eksmo). He has
recently been awarded fellowships at Yaddo and the MacDowell Colony

Please join Bay Area Vegetarians for this special event. Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson’s latest book, The Pig Who Sang to the Moon, is a groundbreaking work that explores the emotional lives of pigs, cows, chickens, sheep, goats, and ducks. In both the book and its companion piece, the documentary film "The Emotional World of Farm Animals", Masson learns about and develops relationships with animals most often ignored—except when they’re being eaten. As he shares his new knowledge and insights with us, it’s easy to understand his affection for these animals—and his conviction that we must change the horrendous reality most of them live.
FYI, there is no graphic footage in this film.
It is suitable for audiences of all ages.
Doors open at 2:30, film starts at 3:00 pm; free admission with RSVP Light vegan refreshments served. Please bring a friend to see this film.

# BURNING RIVER – June 25 & 26
Saturday & Sunday, 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River
Can you imagine 100+ Burners on a fabulous, hot, sunny day on the river? We can dress in crazy attire, have water battles (Super Soakers are a must), chill out on the beaches and just enjoy being in a wet, tree-lined environment with amazing scenery right before our eyes. Once you are on the river, there is nothing to do but have fun and relax. All meals are taken care of and all gear is sent ahead. The most you have to worry about is loosing your paddle and having to swim.
At night, we can put on the Bling!Bling!, light up our e-poi/e-staffs while dazzling the natives by the river’s edge. With a little coordination, we could set up our own cozy village with a community bar among the trees and deeply connect with one another.
If we get enough interest, we may be able to take over one campsite for ourselves (run the music, stay up all night, etc.) and have leverage to book a campground on the way for the preceding Friday night stay or perhaps negotiate discount rooms at the local casino for Friday night. Stay tuned for these opportunities…
This is an all-inclusive, family-oriented (12 yrs +/min. 65 lbs.) event so we encourage you to bring the whole Burner family and to post this announcement out to other Burner communities. The company running it has Burners on the payroll but the guests will be a mix of Burners and non-Burners – our goal is to make it mostly Burners!
The scheduled trip includes 2 days of volcanic river canyon rafting (rated class 3 but is mostly class 2) in either a 2 person ‘ducky’ or a 4 persons raft. The $139 pp fee includes all on-river meals and evening entertainment, life jacket, camping fees, parking, raft rental, paddles and shuttle service. There will be some free tickets for those in our community who cannot afford this adventure but passionately want to attend.
2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River.
