Tent University Santa Cruz April 18-22
UC Santa Cruz, base of campus
Hundreds of students, faculty, staff, and community
members will gather at the base of the UC Santa Cruz
campus to form a giant tent city, symbolizing the
displacement of higher education in our state. The
initial reason for our gathering is the unjust budget
priorities that manifest at our campus. Our goal is to
catalyze a grassroots cultural revolution.
In part, Tent University will serve as an alternative
university, one based on principles of solidarity,
community, and creativity. UCSC faculty will lead
their classes there, rather than in their classrooms;
representatives of various community organizations and
movements will hold teach-ins and workshops; and
students will teach their own classes on a wide
variety of subjects.
Tent University will also be the biggest cultural
festival of the year at our campus. The most popular
bands in town and numerous student and community
creative clubs will perform.
Most important, Tent University will mark the largest
political gathering in the recent history of UCSC. The
University's 500 or so clerical and service workers
will hold a strike the previous week, and they will
use TUSC as an encampment to continue their ongoing
struggle for fair wages and treatment. A student
walk-out will take place that week as well, and it
will utilize Tent University as its central gathering
place. UCSC's many other vibrant social change
movements will likewise take part in the Tent U
convergence. The final two days of the event, everyone
in attendance will apply the principles of direct
democracy in collectively creating a political
platform around which the entire Santa Cruz community
will seek to unite.
The week of April 18th, we will converge at the base
of UCSC to claim the university and the Santa Cruz
community as our own. Join us.

BACKGROUND: THE CITIZENS CHOSE IRV...
Berkeley voters overwhelmingly passed IRV by 72% last March (Measure
I). Oakland and San Leandro voters also approved IRV. IRV would save
these cities several hundreds of thousands of dollars, provide majority
rule, cut down on negative campaigning, and empower voters!
BUT DIEBOLD IS KILLING IT.
Diebold is thwarting the will of the voters and stonewalling IRV.
Diebold recently quoted the county an IRV price tag of $2 million
dollars. Diebold also told city and county officials they can't start
IRV development for a whole year.
IS DIEBOLD LYING -- AGAIN?
How can they be charging $2 million? Diebold told Alameda
County in their bid to get the contract that their equipment can
"easily be programmed for IRV." Diebold has already demonstrated IRV
on their touch-screen equipment. Diebold already runs IRV elections in
places like Cambridge, MA and Ireland. Diebold quoted Burlington, VT
much cheaper figures for IRV. Outside elections experts peg the IRV
upgrade at no more than $50,000. Just 5 months ago Attorney General Bill
Lockyer filed a $2.6 million settlement with Diebold for a lawsuit
alleging "the Texas-based firm provided false information to obtain
payments from the state and counties for its electronic voting
equipment." Is Diebold lying for money again?

Donald I. Abrams, MD, is chief of the Hematology-Oncology Division at San Francisco General Hospital and a Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. In 1997, he received funding from the National Institute on Drug Abuse to conduct clinical trials of the short-term safety of cannabinoids in HIV infection. Subsequently he has been granted funds by the University of California Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research to continue studies of the effectiveness of cannabis in a number of clinical conditions.

Timmen L. Cermak, MD, is Board Certified in Psychiatry, with a Certificate of Added Qualification in Addiction Psychiatry. He is also certified by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM). He served on the Executive Council of the California Society of Addiction Medicine (CSAM) from 1992-1995 and chaired CSAM¹s task force on medical marijuana. His most recent work, Marijuana: What¹s a Parent to Believe? was published by Hazelden in August of 2003.

Explore how we as a group may reduce our personal energy and

energy consumption. We will develop the framework of an agreement for
reducing personal energy and simplifying their lives, and the
accompanying processes that will support their efforts. The resulting
agreement is optional and encouraged, flexible, and milestones are
celebrated, and can serve as "challenge" for members of the group and
for the community.

Talk: Consumerism at the End of the Oil Age - Cal Simone
Americans are fixated on consumption, be it material possessions,
adrenaline rushes, or the co-opting of our spirit. But how much of
that fixation is inducted by the psyche of America as an institution?
What's really going in the national psyche that would have us consume
without reasonable limits? How does this relate to the end of the age
of oil, and what are our choices?
Cal Simone is a Jungian scholar, teacher, coach, and writer who has
dedicated his life to bringing what's in the collective unconscious to
consciousness. He is writing a book on the current energetic state
and trends of the American collective psyche.

Counter Recruitment has become a national issue, and it's working. Between
these efforts and widespread anger about the war, all branches of the United
States Military have seen drastic drops in their recruitment rates. In
February, the Army missed its recruiting goal for the first time in nearly
five years, and it missed its March goal by 32 percent. The Army Reserve is
10 percent behind their year-to-date recruiting target and the National
Guard is 26 percent short, while the need for soldiers is on the rise.
Counter Recruitment has proven to be an effective tool in actually hindering
the Military's ability to carry out this immoral and unjust war, and
Berkeley Stop the War Coalition has been working to bring the Counter
Recruitment movement to UC Berkeley's campus.
Recently, the Associated Students at the University of California (ASUC)
passed a resolution that argued that military recruiters (who refuse to
recruit gays and lesbians) violate the University of California's
anti-discrimination policy and therefore should not be allowed access to
ASUC facilities (SB 107). Still, military recruiters have announced their
intention to show up at the Career Fair in the MLK student union. We have to
build the biggest protest possible to let them know that we won't stand for
the military's discriminatory policies and that we oppose the war on Iraq
that they are recruiting for. Join a growing movement of schools that are
taking a stand against military recruitment on campuses!

Questions and answers following the film with Jan Lundberg, Cal Simone, and others. Jan Lundberg is an energy analyst who published the Lundberg Letter on oil industry trends and now publishes culturechange.org, an online journal focused on ending oil dependency, paving, and disposable plastics. Cal Simone is a Jungian scholar, teacher, and writer who has dedicated his life to bringing what's in the collective unconscious to consciousness. He is writing a book on the current energetic state and trends of the American collective psyche.

Organum is an interactive week of programs at New Langton Arts exploring the human voice through sound, image and technology. A week-long installation premieres Organum: The Game (2005), a video game by digital media artists Greg Niemeyer, Dan Perkel and Ryan Shaw, in which gamers navigate through the human voice box using their own voices as game controls. Organum culminates in a day of activities on Saturday April 23, from noon to midnight, including a brown bag lunch with the artists; an evening reception; and the performance The Human Voice Explored, with vocalists Seth Augustus, Aurora Josephson, and Kid Beyond.

A one-day conference on the approaching peak and decline in global oil supplies will take place at the Royal Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh on Monday, 25 April.

that oil in Richmond. ChevronTexaco's Iraqi war profits, plus its
unprecedented profits from the increased price of oil due to the war, made
2004 the most profitable year in ChevronTexaco's 125-year
history.

*Between 1971 and 1991, Texaco extracted more than 1.5 billion barrels of
oil from the Ecuadorian Amazon, devastating one of the most
biologically fragile places on earth by destroying rainforests and
creating massive oil spills. In order to save millions of dollars, Texaco
simply dumped 20 billion gallons of highly toxic wastes from its
operations into the pristine rivers, forest streams and wetlands, ignoring
industry standards. Now, ChevronTexaco denies the effected peoples of
Ecuador their right to compensation, and instead is trying to get back
into Ecuador for a new round of devastation. The people of Ecuador are
fighting back. They have sued ChevronTexaco for over $6 billion in
compensation for their lost health, land, lives and way of living.

The ChevronTexaco refinery in Richmond spews a deadly array of toxins into
the air, water, and land, including cancer-causing dioxins, on the largely
African American, South East Asian and Latino communities. Since 1999,
there has been a 20% increase in toxic emissions in
Richmond and most of the increase can be attributed to the Chevron
Refinery, the largest polluter in the city. The refinery and plant have
had hundreds of accidents, including major fires, spills, leaks,
explosions, toxic gas releases, flaring and air contaminations
inflicting severe illnesses including asthma and deadly cancers, on the
people of Richmond. Despite decades of requests, demands, lawsuits and
protests, Chevron has continued to place executive salaries and corporate
profits over the health and safety of the community and
workers. The people of Richmond are fighting back and demanding that
Chevron clean up or get out.

of "Alternative Urban Futures: Planning for Sustainable Development
in Cities throughout the World." Any consideration of sustainable

are less damaging to the natural resource base, produce less waste,

appropriate technologies can reduce the negative social and

to improvements in public health, the natural resource base, economic
development, and an increased standard of living and well-being for
urban residents. Professor Pinderhughes is Director of the Urban
Studies Program and Professor of Urban Studies and Environmental
Studies at San Francisco State University. She teaches courses on

# BURNING RIVER – June 25 & 26
Saturday & Sunday, 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River
Can you imagine 100+ Burners on a fabulous, hot, sunny day on the river? We can dress in crazy attire, have water battles (Super Soakers are a must), chill out on the beaches and just enjoy being in a wet, tree-lined environment with amazing scenery right before our eyes. Once you are on the river, there is nothing to do but have fun and relax. All meals are taken care of and all gear is sent ahead. The most you have to worry about is loosing your paddle and having to swim.
At night, we can put on the Bling!Bling!, light up our e-poi/e-staffs while dazzling the natives by the river’s edge. With a little coordination, we could set up our own cozy village with a community bar among the trees and deeply connect with one another.
If we get enough interest, we may be able to take over one campsite for ourselves (run the music, stay up all night, etc.) and have leverage to book a campground on the way for the preceding Friday night stay or perhaps negotiate discount rooms at the local casino for Friday night. Stay tuned for these opportunities…
This is an all-inclusive, family-oriented (12 yrs +/min. 65 lbs.) event so we encourage you to bring the whole Burner family and to post this announcement out to other Burner communities. The company running it has Burners on the payroll but the guests will be a mix of Burners and non-Burners – our goal is to make it mostly Burners!
The scheduled trip includes 2 days of volcanic river canyon rafting (rated class 3 but is mostly class 2) in either a 2 person ‘ducky’ or a 4 persons raft. The $139 pp fee includes all on-river meals and evening entertainment, life jacket, camping fees, parking, raft rental, paddles and shuttle service. There will be some free tickets for those in our community who cannot afford this adventure but passionately want to attend.
