After refusing to honor their conscientious objection, the U.S. military will bring Pablo Paredes (in San Diego, California) and Kevin Benderman (in Fort Stewart, Georgia) before a military court martial tribunal on May 11, 2005. They face military jail, and forfeiture of pay and benefits.
On December 6, 2004, Navy Petty Officer Pablo Paredes refused to board his Navy ship and participate in the Iraq war and occupation.
On January 5, 2005, Kevin Benderman refused to deploy for a second tour of duty in Iraq with the Army's Third Infantry Division. At the same time seventeen other soldiers from his unit went AWOL, two tried to kill themselves and one had a relative shoot him in the leg to avoid deploying.
At the time of his refusal, Pablo said he hoped his protest might inspire other GI's to refuse to take part in the war. Thousands of U.S. troops are refusing to fight the war and occupation in Iraq. We are committed to asserting widespread public pressure in defense of GI's choice to follow their conscience instead of the dictates of the State. We believe this is a key way to help end the tragic war and occupation of Iraq. BUSTAN speakers will discuss "Development" and the impact of "Making the
Desert Bloom" in the context of the ongoing Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
The Negev, the southern region of Israel populated by Bedouin and Jews, is
plagued by divisions. There is a fierce demographic war with Jewish settlers
relocating to the area, a public health crisis from rampant industrial
expansion, and disproportionately high rates of unemployment, crime, and
drug abuse. Beyond camels, coffee, and carpets, Israel's exoticized Bedouin
minority has been divided by geopolitics and tribalism, and is striving to
withstand the forceful currents of urbanization and modernization. Under the
auspices of development, state-land use, stringent planning and zoning, and
selective resource allocation,
Jewish and Arab presenters include DEVORAH BROUS, founder and director of
Bustan. Devorah has spent the past 12 years organizing projects in Israel
and the Occupied Palestinian Territories to struggle against the Occupation,
and to promote fair allocation of public resources. Devorah holds masters
degrees in Israel Studies and Peace/Conflict Studies, with a concentration
in conflict management. Most recently, Devorah designed and orchestrated the
Medwed Project, a program which culminated in the construction of a
solar-powered, straw-bale medical clinic in the "unrecognized" Bedouin
village, Wadi el Na'am, to serve its 5,500 citizens. Devorah has authored
numerous articles and poems about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and
performs spoken word. Devorah resides in Jerusalem.
For over a decade, DR. SALMAN ELBEDOUR has been researching, speaking,
writing, and teaching about the Bedouin educational system in Israel as well
as the psychological impact of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict on Israeli,
Palestinian, and Bedouin youth. Dr. Elbedour serves as the coordinator of
the Urban School Psychology program at Howard University, School of
Education, Washington, DC. He has taught graduate and undergraduate courses
for seven years at Ben Gurion University (in the Negev) and Bir Zeit
University (West-Bank). Elbedour has published extensively on social,
political, health and identity issues related to Bedouin of the Negev and
Palestinian communities.
In 1973, DR. KHALIL ABU RABIA founded the Arab List for Bedouin and
Villagers, a Knesset faction that is currently part of the United Arab List.
Abu Rabia has been at the forefront of the Bedouin rights movement for 35
years working with the Forum for National Consensus, Peace Now, and Gush
Shalom. Abu Rabia has a Ph.D. in Islamic Law and is currently a lecturer and
researcher on subjects including Bedouin Muslim Law, the Relationship
Between Traditional Islamic law and Secular State law, and Spiritual Aspects
of Bedouin Land Rights. Khalil is a professor of Middle East Studies at Ben
Gurion University and Sapir College, a researcher at the Chaim Herzog
Center, and resides in Beer Sheva.

This will be the Board's first look at the MTA budget, and we hope as many people can attend as possible. Attached is a flier asking riders to come to the hearing. Please note the time * it was recently changed from 1 p.m. to 11 a.m.
We'll be handing in all the postcards we've obtained so far at the hearing * at least 700 * and we'll continue to get signed cards to hand in to the full Board when the MTA budget gets to them.
At our meeting last Wednesday, we discussed the hearings currently being held by the MTA about service cuts. We agreed that anyone who can attend the service cuts meetings should speak out in protest of the upcoming cuts. You can find a list of the remaining two meetings and their locations at the end of this e-mail.

Discover the Bay Area's up-and-coming artists at the California College of the Arts 2005 Graduate Exhibition. The exhibition opens Thursday, May 12, with a reception from 6 to 9 p.m. and tantalizing one-minute readings by writing students at 7:30 p.m. Work by students in design and fine arts will be on view.
Featuring work of graduating MFA and MA students, the exhibition includes works in painting, video, sound, sculpture, photography and social interaction. Many new and innovative works will be displayed, including an embroidered globe of the moon, 3-D pixel sculptures, interactive woven textiles and a full scale tree covered with mosaic tile. Curated by faculty member Glen Helfand, the show unfolds throughout the school, giving visitors the opportunity to tour much of the San Francisco campus. The exhbition continues through May 21. Hours are 10 a.m.-8 p.m. daily; admission is free.

San Francisco Naturalist Society general meeting. Naturalist and artist John (Jack) Muir Laws is creating an illustrated field guide to more than 1,200 species of plants and animals of the Sierra Nevada. This comprehensive and easy to use guide will allow botanists to identify the insects that come to their flowers, birders to identify the trees in which the birds perch, or hikers to identify the stars overhead at night. Jack will present an illustrated lecture about the natural history of the Sierra Nevada, and the process of creating a field guide. He will also bring original illustrations that have been painted in the field. Jack has studied the natural history of the Sierra for many years. He is trained as a wildlife biologist and is an associate of the California Academy of Sciences. He has spent the last three summers painting Sierra wildflowers from life. During 2004 alone, Jack spent more than 80 days in the mountains working on illustrations for this book. His illustrations capture the feeling of the living plant, while also including details critical for identification. In the summer of 2004, Laws published Sierra Birds: a Hiker's Guide. He is also a regular contributor to Bay Nature magazine with his "Naturalists Notebook" column.

Within the context of Trevor Paglen's exhibition, Cynthia Chandler (Justice Now), Rachel Herzing (Critical Resistance), Doug Spalding (California Prison Focus), and AC Thompson (SF Bay Guardian) tackle the issues of globalization, imperialism and the prison industrial complex. The panel will look at how the prison system is not merely comprised of the prisons themselves, but how it is a fundamental structure of our society's organization.

Recording Carceral Landscapes documents a series of interventions into sites associated with the Prison Industrial Complex. Trevor Paglen records numerous encounters using a set of specialized gadgets to surveil the people and places that drive California's massive prison system. From Pelican Bay State Prison to the California Correctional Peace Officers Association headquarters, and from the inner chambers of Sacramento to the financial centers of the Bay Area, Paglen shows how mass-imprisonment has insinuated itself into the very fabric of the state, and how prisons themselves are only one part of the Prison Industrial Complex. Several multimedia installations will be on display using images, video, and audio recordings culled from the broader project. The exhibition will also showcase a series of prison re-design proposals that the artist has produced in collaboration with architects Carrie Foster, Matt Wittman, and the Nsumi group.

In addition, we are building a Clothesline of Environmental Heroes which will feature dozens of the incredible women who are working around the world throughout the venue space. This will recognize women working on the frontlines in their communities and who may not otherwise have the opportunity to be honored. We will hang their pictures and descriptions on a clothesline that will break up the space.
We would like to ask that you and/or your organization help contribute several pictures and stories of outstanding women you have worked with over the years. The more you can send us, the better! This may be something you can put together relatively quickly—it may also be a great volunteer/intern project if you so choose.
If you can, please send us these as one-page documents—with a woman’s picture and “story”. These can be any women you have worked with who you find represent leadership in any of Dr. Maathai’s three arenas of environmental sustainability, democracy, or human rights with a paragraph description below.

Karin Dina's enthusiasm and study of health has spanned 1 ½ decades. While
in college, she experienced fatigue that no doctor was able to help her
with. Instead, she decided to find the path to health on her own. She read
countless books and did much research on achieving health over the next few
years. After becoming a vegetarian, she experienced an increase in her
energy level, but it was not until she started eating a largely raw diet
that her fatigue completely abated. In addition, she felt an abundance of
energy that she had never felt before in her life. Since 1990, she has
followed a vegan diet consisting of 80-100% raw foods and has devoted her
life to educating people on how to achieve optimum wellness through diet,
exercise, and emotional balance.
Karin holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of
Connecticut. In 1997, she graduated from the University of Colorado with a
Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology and Magna Cum Laude honors. She studied
naturopathic medicine at Bastyr University, where she was an honors student,
and graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic West with Magna Cum Laude
honors in March of 2005. Throughout her undergraduate and graduate
coursework, she studied advanced nutrition and nutritional biochemistry
extensively. Upon receiving her California chiropractic license, she will be
practicing chiropractic and nutrition counseling at Vitality Health Center
of Marin in San Rafael, CA.
Her talk for the Marin Living Foods May potluck will include raw and living
food recipe demonstrations with information on the scientific reasons for
eating plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and sprouts. Please

Please prepare your dishes with raw, organic (at least pesticide/herbicide
free), vegetarian (vegan - no animal products) ingredients. Nothing cooked,
steamed, baked or otherwise heated above 105 degrees is appropriate for this
potluck. Dehydrated foods and dried fruits are fine as long as they have
been prepared within the temperature guideline above. Tofu and most seaweeds
are not raw foods. Please pay attention to what might go into your dish;
oils, vinegar, spices, salt...is it raw, healthy, etc. Could it be added
later at the potluck by those who want it?
Some attendees have been on the raw path for 20+ years so we must adhere to
these seemingly strict guidelines. There are some wonderful raw foods
cookbooks available at the local health food stores for new ideas, or you
can go to www.living-foods.com for lots of great recipes. Beautiful leafy
greens and veggies presented in a wide variety of (raw) ways are always a
winner. Be creative, enjoy yourself and have fun! If in doubt - leave it

NextAid is a Los Angeles based non-profit organization dedicated to creating sustainable solutions for African children orphaned as a result of AIDS. By partnering with other organizations in the production of music benefits and awareness-raising activities, NextAid channels emergency and long-term aid to African children in need. Proceeds from the event will go towards the building of an earth-friendly multi-purpose center for Youth for a Vision, a non-profit organization comprised of teens mostly orphaned by AIDS who use theater and music to teach AIDS awareness to their peers, literally saving lives. This center will serve as a template for future centers throughout Africa. One of the center’s buildings will be named after Wert Terry.

Dear Santa Rosa friends, My son Fred Burks has become somewhat of a celebrity through his website on government cover-ups and the living of his values, resulting in a long front page article in the Wall Street Journal February 22 (viewable at his website http://www.WantToKnow.info
He will be speaking in Santa Rosa Sunday May 15 at 3pm in Friends House and 7pm at Christ Church United Methodist (Yulupa off Hoen). His subject is described below and a second email will include a chronology of his interpreting experiences from March 1995 to November 2004 when he terminated his contract with the State Department largely due to a new secrecy clause he would have been required to sign.
Fred has served as State Department interpreter (Indonesian language) for President Bill Clinton and VP Al Gore, Secretary of State Albright, Indonesian President Megawati, World Bank President Wolfenson, Asst. Sec of Defense Wolfowitz, and President George W. Bush (several times), among many others.
Feel free to publicize these talks and invite folks from the Peace and Justice Center, ACLU, the Santa Rosa Interfaith Ministerial Association, the Santa Rosa Bill of Rights Defense Committee, Sierra Club, and others to come on Sunday the 15th at one of the two times. Hope to see you on the 15th.

Fred Burks is the son of Methodist minister Paul Burks and a former presidential interpreter. Fred will discuss his fascinating journey up the ranks of the US Department of State as an Indonesian language interpreter. Starting from his first assignment in 1986 to his resignation last November because of excessive secrecy requirements, he will discuss some of the unusual things he has seen in secret meetings. He will also share how making the important decision to reveal these secrets eventually ended in a front page article on him in the Wall Street Journal this past February.

Raindance and family are putting together an event unlike anything we have ever done before and we invite you be a part of it.
This event is in the spirit of Fun, coexistence, sustainable living, recharging your spiritual batteries, experiencing nature, and of course dancing our asses off.
This event will be held at Cutter Reservation, a 300-acre scout reservation and campground in the mountains near Big Basin Redwood Park.
There is more than enough camping room for everyone, however parking is somewhat limited
so please carpool as much as possible. Some of the camping spots you can drive to and some are a short hike. There are bathrooms at all the campgrounds and even a couple of showers near the pool.
Amenities of this magical place include, but not limited to:
? A large Pool to swim in complete with djs for our Sat afternoon pool party.
? A small lake with access to canoes to paddle around and enjoy the beauty of it all.
? Endless hiking with many cool areas to check out.
? A healing zone with local practitioners.
? A remote (hike to) stage where you can put on your own acoustic show of any sort. (this is the perfect spot to watch the sunset!!) So if you are a musician - bring your instruments!!
? There are a number of tents (40 or so) that are pre existing they can be used on a first come basis. They have two cots in each one, no flame is allowed in these tents.

# Saturday, May 21, the Bay Area Vegetarians will host 3 back-to-back fun and important SF events: KFC protest, Shangri-La lunch, Red Vic letter writing party with a presentation by Nora on effective letter writing. You're welcome to come to one, a combination, or all of them.

Morrissey has conducted investigative rescues at egg, turkey, dairy and broiler farms in California's Central Valley. EBAA's Free Range and Dairy Investigations will be examined in detail. Attendees will get the opportunity to observe the unfiltered plight of animals in agriculture.

# BURNING RIVER – June 25 & 26
Saturday & Sunday, 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River
Can you imagine 100+ Burners on a fabulous, hot, sunny day on the river? We can dress in crazy attire, have water battles (Super Soakers are a must), chill out on the beaches and just enjoy being in a wet, tree-lined environment with amazing scenery right before our eyes. Once you are on the river, there is nothing to do but have fun and relax. All meals are taken care of and all gear is sent ahead. The most you have to worry about is loosing your paddle and having to swim.
At night, we can put on the Bling!Bling!, light up our e-poi/e-staffs while dazzling the natives by the river's edge. With a little coordination, we could set up our own cozy village with a community bar among the trees and deeply connect with one another.
If we get enough interest, we may be able to take over one campsite for ourselves (run the music, stay up all night, etc.) and have leverage to book a campground on the way for the preceding Friday night stay or perhaps negotiate discount rooms at the local casino for Friday night. Stay tuned for these opportunities…
This is an all-inclusive, family-oriented (12 yrs +/min. 65 lbs.) event so we encourage you to bring the whole Burner family and to post this announcement out to other Burner communities. The company running it has Burners on the payroll but the guests will be a mix of Burners and non-Burners – our goal is to make it mostly Burners!
The scheduled trip includes 2 days of volcanic river canyon rafting (rated class 3 but is mostly class 2) in either a 2 person 'ducky' or a 4 persons raft. The $139 pp fee includes all on-river meals and evening entertainment, life jacket, camping fees, parking, raft rental, paddles and shuttle service. There will be some free tickets for those in our community who cannot afford this adventure but passionately want to attend.
