6/29: Indecency and the FCC 6:30p 595 Market
INDECENCY AND THE FIRST AMENDMENT: HAS THE FCC GONE TOO FAR?
Gary Bostwick, Partner, Entertainment and Media Practice Group, Sheppard, Mullin, Richter & Hampton, LLP
David Greene, Executive Director, The First Amendment Project
Tim Winter, Executive Director, Parents Television Council
After Janet Jackson's "indecent" exposure during the Super Bowl, media broadcasters and the federal government reacted by increasingly regulating broadcasting and raising the penalties for indecency. However, sharp debates have followed over whether this is serving the public interest or squashing it. Do the FCC's recent actions pose a threat to media democracy, challenging our right to free speech under the First Amendment, or do they serve as a necessary check, enforcing standards and protecting children and the general public from indecent programming?

# 6/29 7pm Is the SF Bay Area for Whites Only? (oakland downtown)
A Forum on Ethnic Cleansing Fellowship Hall of Humanity, 390 - 27th St. Oakland
(between Telegraph and Broadway)
Across the U.S. and in the Bay Area, African communities face ethnic cleansing, a.k.a. "gentrication" through an imposed drug economy and police containment, sending black people to the prisons and the grave as white people are able to move into their neighborhoods. Let's take a stand from the white community to support economic development and an end to the war on the black community!
Come out to hear from Connie Burton, a leader in the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement who led a successful campaign to push back the ethnic cleansing of the black community in Tampa.
With Quetzaocelocuia of the Barrio Defense Committee, Maurice Campbell from Community First Coalition of the SF Bayview Hunter's Point, Bakari Olatunji, West Coast Representative of the International People's Democratic Uhuru Movement and others.

9:15 PM SCREENING "THE WARRIORS" AT THE PARKWAY THEATER IN OAKLAND
1834 Park Blvd. near E. 18th St.
Are you interested in helping move Anarchy magazine to the Bay Area and watching the 70's classic about NY gangs at the same time? Please join us (the Anarchy magazine collective) in a viewing of 'The Warriors' at the Parkway theater (1834 Park Blvd. near E. 18th St.) in lovely Oakland CA on Tuesday June 29th. We will have a table out front and would love to talk about the difference between the anarchists and grumpy liberals, the Patriot Act and the Palmer Act, and the black bloc and a city block.
It's Summer and time for another screening of this all time cult favorite about rival gangs in NY duking it out one hot night, inspired by classical Greek mythology.

Union Square, San Francisco
In reality, more than 175,000 U.S. and U.S.-led troops will continue to occupy Iraq. U.S. troop levels will be maintained at 138,000 until at least the end of 2005, and may be increased according to Bush and the generals. The occupying forces will continue to kill and die for the sake of a war based entirely on lies.
The only solution to the crisis in Iraq is to BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW!
Join us on June 30 to call for a real end to the war and occupation in Iraq.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Our neighborhoods deserve an independent problem-solver who will take care of our diverse needs. On November 2, Vote Ross Mirkarimi for District 5 Supervisor.
Ross Mirkarimi has lived in San Francisco for 20 years where he's been a tireless force for progressive change. He has led legislative efforts and campaigns to make City Hall more accountable to the people, worked to put underdog progressive candidates in elected office, and stopped corporate abuse against seniors and low-income families.
Never succumbing to convention but committed to influencing change from within, Ross enrolled in the SF Police Academy, became class president, and has since, worked at the District Attorney's Office, dedicating most of his time to stopping white collar crime.
Ross was instrumental in the recent passage of Prop. H, the police accountability initiative. Providing hope and inspiration for the politically disenchanted, Ross co-founded the California Green Party over 14 years ago. As an environmental analyst, Ross led two public health investigations (with the Harvard Study Team ) inside Iraq to chronicle the Persian Gulf War's impacts on civilians.
As a legislative aide in City Hall, Ross helped usher the passage of critical legislation: Reestablishment of District Elections, Campaign Spending Limits, Removal of the Central Freeway, Enactment of Transgender Rights, and the Creation of the Environmental Department. In 2001, he directed the Public Power campaign, designed to give San Franciscans a greater voice in their energy future while stopping PG&E's ratepayer rip-off.
Ross will raise the standards of what it means to be a responsive and effective supervisor.

Live! @ The Red Devil Lounge, SF Thu July 1 Doors: 8pm Tickets $20/ $18
KRS-ONE first gained notoriety as the blastmaster behind Boogie Down Productions ó Bronx soldiers from hip-hop's late-'80s golden age who, like Public Enemy, rendered their revolutionary buffalo stance louder than a bomb. Since going solo, KRS-One has proven to be one of rap's most unpredictable personalities ó like ODB inhabited by Noam Chomsky, in some moments he kicks true knowledge, in others utter nonsense. But he's never boring, and as a live performer, KRS-One is frequently unmatched, a veritable shock-and-awe explosion of rat-a-tat edutainment. And should things get slow ó which is unlikely ó he can always wheel out BDP classics "South Bronx," "My Philosophy," "Stop The Violence," and "You Must Learn."

# The New Progressive Left Movement Presents:
Communities Speak For Themselves:
Environmental Racism and Violence in the Community
Violence in Bayview Hunters Point and other communities of color is on
the rise and starting to spread. While the media and some political
leaders choose to blame the parents or youth in these communities,
activists in the community have been fighting the real causes of
community violence for years.
An overall framework of environmental and economic racism has led to
Bayview Hunters Point and surrounding areas becoming the toxic dumping
ground for San Francisco. Two power plants, a sewage treatment plant,
two superfund pollution sites, over 600 hazardous materials sites, two
highways and other factors contribute to the highest rates of breast
cancer, asthma and other illnesses in the country. Meanwhile there is a
lack of economic opportunities, educational resources, health care and
other necessities for a healthy community.
There will be a panel presentation by community members and activists
followed by open discussion, along with cultural performances and a BBQ
lunch.
Progressives everywhere are affected by the root causes of these
issues, while the battles are being waged in communities of color. All
progressives are invited to join the community discussion of these
important issues.
Panelists include Maurice Campbell, Lynne Brown, Dr. Ahimsa Sumchai,
Ray Tomkins, John Nauer, Barbara George and Berta Hernandez.
Saturday July 10, from 12 to 5pm in Hunters Point at the Milton Meyers
Recreation Center, also known as the Kiska Gym at 195 Kiska Road.

# Thu Aug 19 Who Owns Water? Protecting the World's Water
from Corporate Takeover http://www.citizen.org / water
Fortune magazine has predicted that "water is the oil of the 21
century," and now corporations are rushing to invest in the new
get-rich economy of water. Giant water, energy, food, and shipping
companies have plans to buy water rights, privatize publicly-owned
water systems, promote bottled water, and sell "bulk" water by
transporting it from water rich areas to thirsty markets. As the
world's water becomes scarcer and corporations seek to exploit this
scarcity for profit, people around the world are losing ownership and
control of water resources on which they depend. But water is a human
right; to the extent one has the right to live, one has the right to
water.
Join us for a discussion with Juliette Beck and John Gibler of Public
Citizen's Water for All Campaign. Public Citizen's Water for All
Campaign is dedicated to protecting water as a common resource,
stopping water privatization and bulk water sales, and defending
access to clean and affordable water around the world. Come hear how
people in California and around the world - from Stockton and Gualala
to Bolivia and Bangladesh - are defending the global commons and our
right to water, and find out how you can help. 7 pm - 9 pm
