# Tue, Jun 7 7pm The Future of Iran Speaker: Dr. Younes Parsa Benab
Palo Alto Community Media Center, 900 San Antonio Rd. Free

On Tuesday, June 7, at 7:00 p.m., Dr. Younes Parsa Benab will speak about "The U.S. Hegemonic Project, the Middle East, and the Future of Iran" at the Community Media Center in Palo Alto.

Dr. Parsa Benab, a Professor of Political Science at Strayer University and editor of _Iran Bulletin_, will discuss the geo-strategic importance and future of Iran and how the characteristics and nature of the resistance there compare to the resistance in Iraq and Palestine.

When the U.S. denounces the Islamic Republic of Iran's reactionary regime, why don't progressive movements within Iran support U.S. intervention? Who in Iran is in favor of intervention, and why? What will happen if the U.S. tries to expand its program of "democratic" occupation across the Middle East? As struggle and resistance spread throughout the Middle East and the rest of the world against the imperial project of the U.S. ruling elite, the credibility of the U.S. suffers.

The program will be broadcast live on Mid-Peninsula Community Media Cable Channel 27 and rebroadcast throughout June as part of the ongoing "Other Voices" television series produced by Peninsula Peace and Justice Center. This program is co-sponsored by the Iranian Society for Human Rights and South Bay Mobilization.

# Radical Love & Relationship Workshop with Wendy-O Matik
Tue June 7 8:00 PM Good Vibrations 1620 Polk @ Sacramento
  415-345-0400 http://www.goodvibes.com
Radical Love Workshop: Tuesday, June 7, 2005 Good Vibrations at 8PM 1620 Polk Street (at Sacramento Street) San Francisco, CA, T: (415) 345-0400, $20, sliding scale, everyone welcome,
Workshop Description:
At a time when our nation is determined to keep us on the warpath, what better time to raise our voices against intolerance, hatred, and violence? At a time when our government propels us into a new dark age of fascism, what better time to talk about radical love, or the right to love who we want, how we want, and as many as we want? Loving openly and freely in these times, whether you are straight or queer, is a brave political act. We have been conditioned by outdated social norms that limit our perceptions and shackle us to unhealthy cycles of dissatisfying relationships. Yet we also live in a time when we can choose our gender and redefine our sexual identities. Don’t we then have the right to decide what kind of relationship best suits our lifestyle? Declare yourself a revolutionary of the heart. Find out how you can expand your potential to love, transform your lifestyle, and together we can threaten the social forces of patriarchy!
Wendy is the author of Redefining Our Relationships: Guidelines for Responsible Open Relationships. As an educator, role model, and spokesperson for the polyamory community, Wendy has become a revolutionary activist of the heart. Since the release of her book, she has taught over thirty Radical Love & Relationship Workshops globally, excavating important social trends and reshaping the future of alternative relationship models for the 21st century. As an activist for social change, Wendy is pushing the boundaries on firmly rooted notions in mainstream society on relationships, love, gender, sexual equality, and sexual politics. She is available for educational and motivational discussions on the topic of alternative relationship models and responsible non-monogamy.

# Thu, Jun 9 7pm In Rachel's Name Rebuild the Gaza home Rachel Corrie stood to safeguard
First Congregational Church 2501 Harrison @ 27th Street) Oakland

Cindy & Craig Corrie (Rachel’s Parents) & Khaled & Samah Nasrallah (Members of the family who lived in the home)

$10 at the door • No one will be turned away

Contributions will be used to rebuild the Nasrallah Family’s home, and then keep rebuilding homes for more families in Gaza. The Rebuilding Alliance is the only grassroots organization rebuilding homes in Gaza where 3100 homes have been demolished, many by Caterpillar bulldozers made in the U.S.A.

Samah and Khaled Nasrallah, and their infant daughter Sama, are part of the extended family that lived in the home Rachel sought to protect. After Rachel was killed, despite the complete demolition of all the 2200 surrounding homes in their neighborhood, the Nasrallah family continued to live in their home for seven months before it, too, was demolished. Khaled is an accountant who works for the Palestine Airlines (they fly out of Egypt). In July Samah will take her qualifying exams to become a teacher. They have three daughters.

Cindy and Craig Corrie, Rachel’s parents, have become nationally known activists as they called on the US government to "undertake" a full, fair, and expeditious investigation into the death of Rachel Corrie” and for a just peace in Palestine and Israel. Cindy was formerly an educator, musician, and active school and community volunteer on behalf of youth and families.Craig formerly served as an executive at the vice-presidential level in the life insurance industry. They have two other grown children and one grandchild.

$5 – (Finals $10) All Ages
On a roll…' to Albuquerque!
We’re starting to hum along like a well-oiled machine now. Another great show, another hott feature and even more DOPE poetry! In the slam we had two (not quite yet) ’05 Berkeley team members battle it out for the $$. Our feature for the evening, Aya de Leon regaled us with a set of new, more personal work. It’s great when uber-talented folks keep on putting out the work that showcases their commitment to their craft. I only hope some of that drive to grow and get better rubs off on me – and you too!
At the next slam we actually have 2 features for you. Our main feature will be Rupert Estanislao (Suicide Kings http://suicidekingsspokenword.com Eskapo & Def Poetry) who is like a velvet wrapped sledgehammer…'without the velvet. Since coming to America in 1993, from Quezon City, Philippines, Rupert has become a favorite on both the local and national performance poetry scenes and the front-man for the multi-racial and bilingual hardcore band ESKAPO. Rupert is an
immigrant, a punk, a perpetual novice who wishes to learn poetry from life on a day-to-day basis, he writes from beauty and brutality - attempting to pen his experiences from two cultures into the language of poetry.
We’ll also have a group of Youth Poets from Y.E.S. High (that’s the Youth Empowerment School here in Oakland) taking over the open-mic. We may still have an open slot or two but we’ll be giving preference to folks under 18 and students.
So, come on out to the Slam! Support you favorite poet, be a judge, spit your truth on the mic, or just …'listen. See ya there!

# McLibel - the trial of "What's Wrong with McDonald's
For folks who are familiar with activist history, you probably know about McLibel.  For those who don't,  please see info below taken from http://www.mclibelthemovie.com ; another good source is http://www.mcspotlight.org

This true-life story of how two activists stood up when sued by one of the largest multinational corporations is screening in select theatres across the nation, including San Francisco!  Bay Area Vegetarians is proud to be one of the local partner organizations for the screening.   For opening nite, Chris and I will join Erik Marcus for a Q&A session following the 7 pm screening.

Free tickets giveaway - see our June newsletter for details - http://www.bayareaveg.org/news

It will be playing for one week starting June 10th  at Landmark Lumiere 3 at 1572 California Street .  Here are the showtimes for folks interested in seeing the documentary.  Regarding showtimes: As a rule, theatres do not schedule the showtimes of a film until the Tuesday before the film opens. We're happy to share this advance info you.   BUT we do advise that you confirm with the theatre though.

Fri - Sun: 2:30, 5:00, 7:00, 9:30
Mon - Thur: 5:00, 7:00, 9:30

If you want to see the original flyer or more details, check out our Event Calendar
http://www.bayareaveg.org/events.php?EID=860#860
Is anyone interested in meeting up for an early dinner at 5 pm before going to the movie?  If so, please RSVP on the evite w/any comments-suggestions and we'll confirm details by Thursday.   I was considering Golden Era but I think at this point Ananda Fuara is a better choice because of more direct bus transit options.  Plus they've got a wonderful veggie burger (vegan if you say hold the butter or was it mayo..) and their soups are yummy.

Hope to see many of you tomorrow at the presentation on California Animal Agriculture: Facts & Fallacies!

Cheers, Tammy  About McLibel

McLibel is the true story of a postman and a gardener who took on McDonald's and wouldn't say "McSorry," in a legal battle since described as "the biggest corporate PR disaster in history."
McDonald's loved using the UK's libel laws to suppress criticism. Major media organizations like the BBC and The Sun had crumbled and apologized. But then McDonald's sued penniless activists' Helen Steel and Dave Morris.
In what became the longest trial in English legal history, the "McLibel 2" represented themselves against McDonald's USD$19 million legal team.
Every aspect of the corporation's business was cross-examined: from junk food and McJobs, to animal cruelty, environmental damage and the company's advertising to children.  Outside the courtroom, Dave brought up his young son alone and Helen supported herself working nights in a bar.
McDonald's tried every trick in the book against them. Legal maneuvers. A visit from Ronald McDonald. Top U.S.executives flying to London for secret settlement negotiations. Even spies.
Seven years later, in February 2005, the marathon legal battle finally concluded in the European Court of Human Rights. And the result took everyone by surprise - especially the British Government.
Filmed over ten years by no-budget Director Franny Armstrong (Drowned Out), McLibel features reenactments of key courtroom scenes directed by Ken Loach.
McLibel is not about hamburgers. It is about the power multinational corporations wield over our everyday lives and two unlikely heroes who are changing McWorld.

# SF World Naked Bike Ride - June 11 noon 2005
 Saturday, June 11 12:00 PM
The World Naked Bike Ride is on....

or simpler still: send blank email to:
SF_WNBR-subscribe@yahoogroups.com

It's time to put a stop to the indecent exposure of
people and the planet to cars and the pollution they
create.

According to the United Nations, close to a million
species of plants and animals could disappear from the
face of the earth in the next 50 years as a result of
greenhouse gasses being released primarily from motor
vehicles.

On June 11th 2005 over 54 cities across the world will
experience the naked joy of the world's largest naked
protest against oil dependency and car culture in the
history of humanity. Many cities will also ride again
on the weekend closest to Valentine's Day 2006.

You are invited to not only ride with us but also to
help organize a WNBR event in the city of your
choosing. More information. Visit our upcoming events
page for a list of participating cities.

World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) is being organized and
supported by many different groups. The groups are
only connected by their determination to all be naked
on their bikes June 11th, riding in celebration,
jubilation to deliver a vision of a cleaner, safer,
body-positive world to the masses. Yes, we have many
great reasons to be celebrating June 11th with all the
glory of naked two wheel sanity. It's time to join
hundreds of naked compatriots in a free, non-sexual,
fun bike ride!

All are welcome! From the shy to the bold. Cyclists,
rollerbladers, rollerskaters, skate boarders. All
ages, sizes, and colors welcome. Bring your family and
your co-workers!

What to wear? Do not fear! The World Naked Bike Ride
dress code is "Bare As You Dare"... How bare is that ?
How dare is that ?...Its all up to you, you decide
what you are comfortable with. NO ONE IS EXCLUDED OR
DISCRIMINATED AGAINST based on levels of clothing,
bodypaint, or anything else, for that matter! PLEASE
be creative and colorful in expressing yourself!
Bodypainting, bike decorating, and other creative
expression is strongly encouraged!

Unless we change direction, we are likely to end up
where we are heading.

The World Naked Bike Ride (WNBR) group was created by
Daniel and Conrad to help coordinate a large
international naked bike ride between many different
activist groups across the World. The World's first
international naked bike ride in 2004 was a
collaboration between the WNBR group which rode on
June 12th and Manifestaci?n Ciclonudista in Spain
which rode on June 19th.

Prior to the June 2004 World Naked bike ride, there
were two independent organizations organizing very
similar events with virtually identical messages of
protesting oil dependency, they were Artists for Peace
in Canada and Manifestaci?n Ciclonudista in Spain.
Despite having virtually identical messages neither of
these groups even knew of the existence of the other.
-

Pretty Cool, huh?!

For more information on these rides or if you are
looking for a general history of naked cycling visit
the naked cycling history page. For media coverage,
collaborative partners, and endorsements click here.
For a summary of the first year of WNBR events click
here. A lot of general questions about WNBR can be
answered in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
section.

# Pot Luck and Speaker Gathering by the
Marin Living Foods Community
Please Bring A friend or Neighbor This Month and Share the Gift of Health
Our Featured Speaker Will Be
John Kohler
John Kohler has been on the living and raw foods diet for nearly a decade;
he turned to living foods for healing from a life threatening-illness
(spinal meningitis) and has enjoyed dynamic health ever since. One of Johns
goals is to educate the world about the power of living and raw foods. He is
the founder and webmaster of the largest living and raw food website on the
internet, www.living-foods.com <http://www.living-foods.com/>, and
www.rawfoodsupport.com <http://www.rawfoodsupport.com/>. John also owns and
manages www.discountjuicers.com <http://www.discountjuicers.com/> and is the
number one expert on rawfoods appliances and gadgets in the world. He is
widely sought out and regularly speaks and instructs at many raw food
festivals and events. His area of expertise include recipe demos with 5-7
ingredients or less, young coconut recipes, traveling while raw, rawfood
appliances, successful transition to the rawfoods diet, and the importance
of a fresh organic whole foods diet. He believes that by using fresh,
organic, and whole ingredients, that simple, healthy, and delicious recipes
can be made with few ingredients and without the use of salt, oil, spices,
refined sweeteners or chemical additives. He is known for his pragmatic
approach to rawfoods and has coached and helped thousands of people to
incorporate more fresh raw fruits and vegetables into their diet.
Topic: Getting Juicers and Blenders to work for you!
In this talk, John will explain the various types of juicers on the market,
from the twin gear juicers, to the single auger juicers, to centrifugal
ejection juicers... Which is best for you?? Learn at this talk! John will
also demonstrate several types of juicers and explain the difference between
blending and juicing. He will also share some of his favorite recipes that
can be made with these appliances.

On Saturday, June 11th, from 6 til 9pm,
1 Wellbrock Hts. San Rafael, CA 94903 (directions below)
Cost: $3 donation and Raw food dish to serve 8, per person

6:00 pm start. PLEASE try to be on time. We eat at 6:15 and our speakers
generally start at 7:00

Please bring a raw food dish of your choice to serve 8 people making sure to
review the guidelines for food below.
*********** Guidelines for Food ***********
Please prepare your dishes with raw, organic (at least pesticide/herbicide
free), vegetarian (vegan - no animal products) ingredients. Nothing cooked,
steamed, baked or otherwise heated above 105 degrees is appropriate for this
potluck. Dehydrated foods and dried fruits are fine as long as they have
been prepared within the temperature guideline above. Tofu and most seaweeds
are not raw foods. Please pay attention to what might go into your dish;
oils, vinegar, spices, salt...is it raw, healthy, etc. Could it be added
later at the potluck by those who want it?
Some attendees have been on the raw path for 20+ years so we must adhere to
these seemingly strict guidelines. There are some wonderful raw foods
cookbooks available at the local health food stores for new ideas, or you
can go to www.living-foods.com for lots of great recipes. Beautiful leafy
greens and veggies presented in a wide variety of (raw) ways are always a
winner. Be creative, enjoy yourself and have fun! If in doubt - leave it
out! Call or email if you need ideas or have questions.

Now you can send your friends to <http://WWW.MARINRAWFOOD.COM>
for potluck details. http://WWW.MARINRAWFOOD.COM

******* Plates and Silverware *******
Please bring your own plate and silverware. Not only is it ecologically
beneficial, it's a much more pleasing dining experience.

# BEYOND OIL II
TOOLS FOR THOUGHT, THOUGHTS FOR CHANGE

Celebrated authors, Joanna Macy and Richard Heinberg, headline an evening presented by the East Bay Post Carbon Solutions Group, Beyond Oil II, on June 14, 2005 at 7PM at the First Congregational Church, 2501 Harrison Street in Oakland.  This evening of conversation will give our community the tools to better understand how to begin preparing for a time of energy scarcity and climate change.

In the context of what she calls "the Great Turning," Joanna will speak about awakening to the reality of climate change and the depletion of oil resources, thereby moving from denial into action.  Her talk will prepare us for fully absorbing Richard's presentation.

Richard's presentation will be actual practice for the awakening Joanna describes.  He will report back from the 4th Annual Conference of the Association for the Study of Peak Oil (ASPO) in Lisbon.  He will also discuss practical steps we can take now in our own communities to prepare for these changes.

Eco-philosopher Joanna Macy, Ph.D. (www.joannamacy.net), scholar of Buddhism, general systems theory, and deep ecology, is also a leading voice in movements for peace, justice, and a safe environment.  Her wide-ranging work addresses psychological and spiritual issues of the nuclear age, the cultivation of ecological awareness, and the fruitful resonance between Buddhist thought and contemporary science.  She serves as adjunct professor to the Starr King School for the Ministry, the University of Creation Spirituality, and the California Institute of Integral Studies.  Among other works, she is the author of Coming Back to Life: Practices to Reconnect Our Lives, Our World.

Richard Heinberg http://www.museletter.com , journalist and lecturer, is a core faculty member of New College of California, where he teaches courses on Energy and Society, and Culture, Ecology and Sustainable Community.  His monthly MuseLetter has been nominated for an Alternative Press Award, he has been published in many journals, and his books have been translated into eight languages.  Richard travels internationally to speak on the subject of Peak Oil.  His latest books are: The Party's Over: Energy Resources and the Fate of Industrial Societies; and Powerdown: options and actions for a post-carbon world.

Sponsored by Post Carbon Institute, Ecology Center, KPFA, and City Repair Oakland West (CROW).
http://postcarbon.org http://ecologycenter.org http://oakland.cityrepair.org

The East Bay Post Carbon Solutions Group is a local grassroots organization.  Currently, we meet once a week and welcome new members.  A conference is also planned for September which will address how we can begin now to find hopeful and positive responses to the inevitable changes that will accompany the rapidly-approaching depletion of oil.

# BURNING RIVER – June 25 & 26 Saturday & Sunday, 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River Can you imagine 100+ Burners on a fabulous, hot, sunny day on the river?  We can dress in crazy attire, have water battles (Super Soakers are a must), chill out on the beaches and just enjoy being in a wet, tree-lined environment with amazing scenery right before our eyes.  Once you are on the river, there is nothing to do but have fun and relax.  All meals are taken care of and all gear is sent ahead.  The most you have to worry about is loosing your paddle and having to swim. At night, we can put on the Bling!Bling!, light up our e-poi/e-staffs while dazzling the natives by the river's edge.  With a little coordination, we could set up our own cozy village with a community bar among the trees and deeply connect with one another. If we get enough interest, we may be able to take over one campsite for ourselves (run the music, stay up all night, etc.) and have leverage to book a campground on the way for the preceding Friday night stay or perhaps negotiate discount rooms at the local casino for Friday night.  Stay tuned for these opportunities… This is an all-inclusive, family-oriented (12 yrs +/min. 65 lbs.) event so we encourage you to bring the whole Burner family and to post this announcement out to other Burner communities.  The company running it has Burners on the payroll but the guests will be a mix of Burners and non-Burners – our goal is to make it mostly Burners! The scheduled trip includes 2 days of volcanic river canyon rafting (rated class 3 but is mostly class 2) in either a 2 person 'ducky' or a 4 persons raft.  The $139 pp fee includes all on-river meals and evening entertainment, life jacket, camping fees, parking, raft rental, paddles and shuttle service.  There will be some free tickets for those in our community who cannot afford this adventure but passionately want to attend. 2 hours north of the Bay Area on the Upper Cache River. burningriver_ca@yahoo.com See you on the river!
