Indigineous Permaculture Event: Slides, Music, Education Come enjoy this evening's events which will include Mayan native dance, music, poetry and a slideshow presentation of the Indigenous Permaculture Project's work in the Bay Area, on the Pine Ridge Reservation, and in El Salvador. The Indigenous Permaculture Project is travelling this Summer to El Salvador to support the Traditional School Program in Sonsonate state which is working on building water purification systems, constructing a community building, and giving workshops on health and traditional farming. Poverty and exploitation of resources has led to rapid deforestation and erosion in this area. The Indigenous Permaculture Project links people in the Bay Area with the communities of El Salvador to restore the natural environment in this region. Ecological Sanitation in Haiti, Compost Toilet Project Come hear Sasha Kramer talk about the work of Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods (SOIL) to support ecological sanitation and other soil fertility projects in Haiti. What do composting toilets mean for health, nutrition and the environment? Approximately 2.6 billion people around the world do not currently have access to sanitation facilities, resulting in high incidences of waterborne disease and environmental degradation. Ecological sanitation is a relatively new approach to this problem which promotes low cost methods for recycling nutrients from human wastes for use in agriculture. This approach has been widely adopted in regions of southern Africa where it has had important implications for public health, nutrition, and the environment. Inspired by the work in Africa, this summer Sasha and SOIL will be working with a group of Stanford engineers from Engineers for a Sustainable World to set up several demonstration ecological sanitation sites in rural Haiti. Come hear about this important work. About the Speaker: Sasha Kramer received her PhD in 2005 from the ecology program at Stanford. For the past several years she has worked in rural Haiti as a human rights observer and traveled to Africa several times to learn about ecological approaches to rural sanitation. She is currently working to start the non-profit SOIL (Sustainable Organic Integrated Livelihoods) to support research and implementation of community based approaches to soil fertility (beginning with ecological sanitation) in Haiti. Training: Indigenous Permaculture in El Salvador (June 1st Application Deadline) The communities of Maquilishuat Nahuat peoples and the cooperative of El Mansano will host 10 international participants. The two communities are located in northwestern El Salvador. We will work with community members building a community center, work with children in elementary schools, practice sustainable forestry management, help with composting toilets and water catchment systems, practice traditional and sustainable agriculture, promote biodiesel, and help with adobe and traditional house construction. We'll enjoy home stays with local families and explore the beautiful and dramatic natural surroundings. Note that these are remote rural location. There is no road access directly to the communities. SCRAP Workshop: "Mosaics" This workshop begins with an overview of various mosaic techniques, materials, and adhesives and will focus on design, layout and application. We will use tile, shells, buttons, etc. to create the design on large tiles (12" square) or other objects from SCRAP. Course: "Hybrid Adobe Construction" Hands-on learning, discussion, and lectures on hybrid adobe formulas, techniques, and applications. We'll work on the construction of our outdoor restroom and showers facility. We will be setting stones, pouring the last of the floors and creating the walls. Each stage requires different formulas.
