# July 21: National Cage Free Call-In Day
July 21: National Cage Free Call-In Day to Andronico's Market
Andronico's Market, a grocery chain in the San Francisco Bay Area,
claims that it is committed to the highest standards of animal
husbandry and plays an important role in promoting humane business
practices. Yet it still sells eggs from hens confined in battery cages,
despite the recent evidence provided by East Bay Animal Advocates, which
documented abusive conditions at NuCal, an Andronico s brand-name egg
supplier. The undercover footage shows intensive confinement of
chickens inside a series of barren, windowless sheds where thousands of
hens are confined in wire cages so small that they cannot flap their wings.
For more information about Andronico's support of animal abuse, visit
http://www.AndronicosAbuse.com
In order to advance the company s so-called commitment to excellence,
EBAA is asking Andronico's to adopt a cage-free egg policy. Call
Andronico's Market at (510) 649-6759 between 9 AM and 5 PM PST this
Friday. Thank you!

# Fun with Video Phones: "The Hookup"
The Makeout Room 3225 22nd St/Mission Friday, July 21st Doors at 7:00 $5
"Fun with Videophones: The Hookup" is a live, interactive, reality show using the marvels of digital video phones to capture the action as it unfolds, and to allow the audience to affect the outcome by choosing what will happen next.
Angry Waiter 4am presents "Fun with Videophones: The Hookup" at the Makeout Room in San Francisco. Doors open at 7pm.
The premise is simple. A contestant is sent out accompanied by a person with a mobile phone with video capacity.
Using the latest cell phone video technology (to capture the action as it unfolds), the contestant will go "on the prowl", trying to pick someone up at bars throughout San Francisco. The crew records the action, then emails it back to the Makeout Room, where the video is displayed. Then the audience votes on what pickup line to use, what approach should be taken or simply what to do next, through a set of three choices. That’s right, the audience "writes the script," prompting our heroes in the field on what they should do and how it should be carried out.
Yes, it’s the first show ever to use phone technology for the purpose of live entertainment! It’s a live interactive dating show! It’s fun with video phones! It’s reality art! It’s a spectacle! It’s embarrassing! It’s ridiculous!
Information about the producers:
Angry Waiter 4am is a multi-media collective who created the enormously popular show Joke-e-oke!
Kurt Bigenho is an artist, curator, and designer, based in the SF Bay Area. More information about his projects and provocations can be found at his personal site, unfinished.com. A primary on-going project is The Dept. of Shape Research, an organization which is currently hard at work developing many 1000s of completely useless shapes. He is the curator of Multiverse, a monthly art-party at Rx Gallery. He has shown work at New Langton Arts, Southern Exposure, four walls, Somarts, the Webbys, Rx Gallery, and the Oakland Museum of Art. He has a degree in architecture from UC Berkeley and consults as a brand, experience, and information strategist.

# Pedal Monster - Mutant Bike Festival July 21-23
BY MAYORAL PROCLAMATION -- no, really, we're not lying, the paperwork's done and Gavin Newsom said so -- THE WEEKEND OF JULY 22-23 HAS BEEN DECLARED "CYCLECIDE WEEKEND" IN SAN FRANCISCO!!!
Honk honk!
San Francisco's Heavy Pedal CYCLECIDE BIKE RODEO presents:
PEDAL MONSTER!
July 21nd - Poker Run, meet at Zeitgeist (Valencia and Duboce) @ 7:30pm, leave at 9:00pm SHARP!
July 22, 2-10pm; July 23, 2-8pm - Mission Village Market, 18th and Alabama Streets, San Francisco.
Poker run participation $5, 21 and over. Carnival is all ages; $7-10 sliding scale.
RIDER ASSUMES ALL RISK.
San Francisco's CYCLECIDE BIKE RODEO is, as always, 2 DUM 2 DIE -- and ready to get hitched at City Hall, regardless of handlebar shininess or headtube length. In the wake of their countless tours across the
country, insane and successful hometown shows, myriad television appearances, documentary films, festival headlinings, international fashion magazine modeling spreads (no really), and cultural blah blah and interactivity thus and so on and the "for the Kids" every which way, the Honorable Gavin Newsom and the City of San Francisco do hereby proclaim July 22-23
to be CYCLECIDE WEEKEND.
And in return, Cyclecide is proving its eternal love to the City and to the culture of the bike with a freakish, pedal-and-contraption-centric carnival of stupid and epic proportions. Mutant Bike Clubs from all of the U.S.A. will descend upon San Francisco -- from as far away as Seattle, Reno, and New York -- to carouse and joust and make out with local hotties. The Cyclecide Bike Rodeo will run around like a chicken with its head geeked off. There will be bands, shows, games, and general cacophony, the likes of which San Francycle has rarely seen.
Accept no imitations -- CYCLECIDE REMAINS THE WORLD'S ONLY BIKE RODEO AND PEDAL-POWERED CARNIVAL MIDWAY!
Even the mayor agrees.
Fri/21:
POKER RUN. Meet at Zeitgeist @ 7:30pm for registration, leave @ 9:00pm SHARP!
Wherein mutant bicycling fans and feisty cyclists are all invited to throw in $5 to participate in a multi-bar POKER GAME involving DRINKING and BICYCLING.
There will be prizes and very probably some pie-fighting and light pavement-wrestling
Sat/22-Sun/23:
PEDAL MONSTER Festival takes over the Mission Village Market. (P.S. the market is slated for destruction soon after that. Bye-bye, lovely Mission weekends searching the flea market for thrifty treasures. Sniff.)
Featuring:
-Cyclecide Rides & Sideshow, with Skits, Mutant Bikes, Rodeo Clowns, and punk rock mariachi band Los Banos
-An Only In San Francisco Circus Midway, with Wrong-Way Bike Games, Ornery Clowns Doing Incredibly Stupid Things, and Hot Utra Gypsy Bellydancers Selling Raffle Tickets for Mutant Bikes and Other Prizes.
-Interclub Tallbike Jousting, as seen on TV and in the 2003 film-festival hit documentary *Too Dumb To Die* -- contestants include Neanderthals from out-of-town bike tribes, Doyle the 2005 World Tallbike Jousting Champion, and Gorgar the Vain and Belligerent Urine-Eating Monster
-Pervitadora Records' Glen Meadmore -- the Hot, Horny, and Born-Again Singing Cowboy
-The Life-Size Mousetrap -- the Rube Goldberg-inspired creation based on the children's board game but instead of a net at the end there's a 2-ton safe that smashes things. With three-a-day performances by sexy mice, cranky blue-collar clowns, and the one-woman-band Esmerelda Strange
-The Disgusting Spectacle -- a Giant Head Sculpture that Picks its Own Nose with an Equally Giant Pointy-Fingered Hand, Powered by a Human-Sized Hamster Wheel
-BMX Ramp Competition and Flatland Expo Presented by First Rule
-Kielbasa, the Accordion-Playing Lunch Lady
-The Slow Poisoner
-The Outlaw Country of Hellbound Glory
-Flower Frankenstein / BikiniKat
-DJs Toph One, jef leopard, Renessa, & Big Daddy

Camping for Bohemian Grove Convergence 2006
Dear Greens and other friends -
We hope you are planning to attend the July 22 protest and Green
Convergence at Bohemian Grove in Sonoma County. You will help shine
a light on what has been called the greatest men's party on earth; one
made up of many of the men who profit most from oil and the war to get
it. And others who gain vast wealth from cheap labor, keeping it "illegal"
or far off shore. And, of course, their political enablers.
The protest will take place starting at 1 P.M. in the Sonoma County town of
Monte Rio, at the parking lot across from the Rio theater, at the
intersection of Bohemian Highway and Hwy. 116. There will be a short
rally at the parking lot, followed by a march to the Bohemian Grove gate at
2 P.M.. Local organizers are planning a Saturday evening dinner and event
in Monte Rio starting at about 4 P.M. to finish out the day of protest and
community building.
This is a summer playground, and we hope you and your family, friends and
allies will come and make a week-end out of it. Below are contacts for a
number of the campgrounds and resorts in the vicinity. We will try to have
a group camp space set aside, but that has not been confirmed as of this
writing, and it should not be depended upon.
Most of these venues are first cone, first served, though it never hurts to
call and see if you can reserve a site:
Austin Creek State Rec, area, 707-865-2391, 17000 Armstrong
Woods Rd., $10, 24 units
Cassini Family Campground, 800-451-8400, 22855 Moscow Rd.,
Duncan's Mills, (near Monte Rio) $22-29, huge, along the Russian
River. Be aware this week end will be a Civil War reenactment at Cassini,
so will be likely crowded with Civil War buffs.

# Ayurveda, Vedic Astology and Vedic 'Feng Shui' Workshop with Prashanti
Hi there,
I will be teaching a day long workshop on using Vedic Astrology and Vastu
Shastra (the Mother of Feng Shui) for the purpose of diagnostics and
treatment for one's Health and Healing. To be clear and real, though one
does need years of guided practice to gain real Siddhi, accomplishment, in
these ancient sciences, one needs no prior information or knowledge of
either Ayurveda nor Vedic astrology to reap heaps of rewarding insights from
this workshop.
Class will in Monterey this Saturday, July 22nd, from 9 AM to 6PM. Cost is
$95. I am sorry for the late notice. It is because I am teaching this
class for an Ayurvedic School and just found out that I can also open it to
the public! Please send this post to all your friends in the Santa Cruz
area! Thanks.
Prashanti de Jager
415.663.5441
Here is more detailed information on the 'theory' behind the class. I love
merging these topics as it so shows the underlying mechanism of the Universe
and how what we think are disparate entities are really only seemingly
different and are actually manifestations of one and the same deeper flavor
of energy. What does mars have to do with rashes or the with the SouthEast
direction? Lets find out!
JYOTISHA FOR AYURVEDA
Jyotisha, Vedic Astrology, literally means ‘Lords of the Light’ and is a
study of inner ‘light’ patterns by studying outer ‘light’ according to the
ancient dictum, “As Above, So Below!” What the Vedic people knew long ago,
that we are complex terrains of subtle yet powerful and pervasive light
patterns, modern sciences, unshackled by the limitations of Newtonian
physics, is now confirming. Like an Alex Grey painting illustrates, we
simply are closer to a Fourier transform integrated over a vast realm of
electro-magnetic frequencies than we are to a physical mechanistic hamburger
and it is this depth of knowledge that we can utilize for medicinal
diagnostics. In Ayurveda, the Vedic science of health and healing, we want
to treat the root of the problem, not just the outer symptoms. When a Vedic
Scientist/Doctor is being a detective with an Ayurvedic client whose Vedic
Astrology chart they know they can trace their health patterns back to the
beginning of their life and get an idea of where they are going for the rest
of their life, not just in their romantic relationships or occupation,
questions typically asked of such a Doctor, but also in health as all the
planets and transits depict all aspects of being. For instance both mars and
moon signify different aspects of both mind and the blood. Thus one can see
that perhaps a rash on the arm today is actually a manifestation of anger
caused by an intensely challenged belief systems during a divorce 10 years
ago and thus we can treat the root of the rash by helping them emotionally
digest the reality of the divorce. If a Doctor just treated the rash, or
the blood and liver, they would not have found the real root. Hence Jyotish
is very important for deep diagnostics. Jyotish is an incredible tool to see
that which is adrishti, unseeable, and an indispensable model for many of
the leading Ayurvedic clinicians, like Dr Lad. In this talk we will explore
what each planet and position signify and thus how to read from the chart
the basic natal constitution and transient constitution of a person and also
see what their health strength and/or weakness may be.
VASTU FOR AYURVEDA
We typically think of ‘direction’, as in North or South, as a line aligned
with a certain degree of the compass. But can you imagine the different
‘directions’ as being different flavors of energy, as distinct as ‘hot’ or
‘cold?’ Direction as Energy! And so how we are aligned with these energies
can be crucial, for instance the alignment of your body as you sleep. This
is just the beginning. In Ayurveda we see that there are five bodies that
embody consciousness, including the mind, the prana and the physical body.
Vastu is important to know in Ayurveda as a person’s house is actually like
a sixth body. Thus, to optimize the health of ourselves, we have to
optimize the health of this somewhat more ‘fixed body’ and our relationship
to it. Studying Vastu Shastra, which in a way can be seen as Ayurveda for a
home or structure, has also helped me deepen my understanding and practice
of Ayurveda for the ‘other’ five bodies that we wear.
Hope to see you!

Saturday, July 22, 2006 10:00 PM
Over the last decade, SISTER SF has provided a platform for female DJs to step behind the decks and be viewed as a DJ. no bias. SISTER is not anti-male. Sister is simply pro-female.
Like many things that better with age, Sister SF has given San Francisco a party that year after year, somehow manages to top itself in both humor, entertainment, and music. For Nine years running, we've managed to morph some of the man-ly-ist local DJ boys around into fishnet wearing, skirt bearing blondes. We call this phenomonon
Dragnet: We Like Boys.
So pull your skirt up and get over to Mighty. 8 solid Misters drag-teaming with all the resident Sisters. It's not testosterone that makes a DJ. It's not stilettos that break a DJ. What matters are the skills under the skirt.

# I think it's really important we support our wildlife animals too, so I request people Support the "Natural Areas Plan" at this local Rec & Park meeting next week, as people concerned for animals.
On July 26th at 8:30 am in City Hall, room 416, the Recreation and Park Commission will hold a hearing on a bold and progressive plan to preserve San Francisco's Significant Natural Resource Areas.
During the public comment, which won't be till 9am at the earliest, you merely need to stand in line and say something like:
"My name is _____. I live in _____, and I strongly encourage you to adopt the Natural Area Plan without delay. Many endangered species rely on this critical habitat and as a bay area resident, it's our duty to preserve it and the species that live there."
A little about the plan: Dogs and their companion humans will be allowed in every acre of the Natural Areas Program, no feral cats will be harmed and the Program will plant over 4,000 trees over the next 20 years, a net increase in trees. The trees planted will be fire resistant, indigenous species.
IF YOU CANNOT ATTEND, E-MAIL margaret.mcarthur@sfgov.org, Commission Liaison to tell her to forward your "Support of the Natural Areas Plan" e-mail to the Commission for consideration.
IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE PLAN, E-MAIL christine@animalattorney.com

# FREE Intro | Evolutionary Health and Well Being | Thursday July 27th
http://evolutionaryawareness.com/events/intros/health.php
What: Evolutionary Health and Well Being™
A Brief Introduction
When: THURSDAY Thursday July 27th 7:00pm to 9:30pm [RSVP Required]
Where: The Arete Center for Excellence in SF
Why:
Learn How:
•I virtually eliminated HIV from my system in a few months without meds!
•To dissolve beliefs about what is and is not possible within your body
•Bring evolutionary awareness to health and well being
+Body: nutrition and fitness
+Mind: How specifically to harness the power of the mind
for your healing and how to clear out significant negative
emotional experiences
•Which non-deity, non sectarian, spiritual practices I used
•Apply to the same technology to any illness or limitation in your thinking
•Find out about the Evolutionary Health and Well Being™ workshop in
September
All in one brief evening!
What if "incurable" diseases were curable? What if there were a mental
technology and a integral approach that could unlock that possibility? It is
one thing to believe in the power of the mind...it is another to have the
key and be able to cut copies to give away for access, and to be a living,
breathing example of it with access to the specifics, diligently recorded
over my 5 month journey to heal myself. And heal myself I did.
Think this is impossible? Think again.

Fri July 28
# San Francisco Peak Oil Hearing July 28
SFhearings @ sfbayoil.org
Bay Area activists and concerned citizens are encouraged to mark Friday, July 28, on their calendars. On that afternoon at City Hall in San Francisco, the Local Agency Formation Commission (LAFCo) will be holding the first in a series of hearings on Peak Oil, focusing on its potential ramifications for San Francisco (and the Bay Area), how city government is equipped, or more correctly "not equipped," to deal with an energy famine, and what the local government might do to mitigate the catastrophe Peak Oil will bring to our local economy, infrastructure, and personal lives. This hearing will provide an opportunity for education of the local population regarding an issue with which so many are completely unfamiliar, despite its urgency.
On April 11, 2006, San Francisco made history. By a vote of 10-0 by the Board of Supervisors, our local "City Council," it became the first major American city to pass a resolution acknowledging the Peak Oil phenomenon. This action was taken after a group of local citizens from a grassroots organization, San Francisco Oil Awareness, contacted and met with their representatives, voicing their concerns about the city's future. The resolution, sponsored by Supervisors Ross Mirkarimi, Jake McGoldrick, Sophie Maxwell, and Chris Daly, called for Mayor Gavin Newsom and the Board of Supervisors to acknowledge Peak Oil and to provide funding for an assessment which would determine the effects of petroleum depletion upon our way of life.
This proposed assessment is a major undertaking, and the suggestions such a study would determine necessary to mitigate effects from Peak Oil could not realistically be tackled in the political realm without a mandate of the citizenry of San Francisco. Unfortunately, even in progressive San Francisco, a majority of our population do not know about nor understand what Peak Oil is, as major media are almost always silent about the topic, or when discussing it they are rife with misinformation. But our region is special in its history of activism and consciousness, and by harnessing these historical assets, San Francisco is poised to seize this moment and avoid the worst case scenario that could befall us as petroleum-based fossil fuel energy becomes increasingly difficult to extract from the earth and prohibitively expensive to acquire. San Francisco must take this occasion to begin to "power down."
With your help, July 28 could provide the needed impetus to educate the citizenry of San Francisco and the Bay Area about these potential disruptions. On that afternoon at 1:30, a press conference will be held on the steps of City Hall in conjunction with San Francisco Oil Awareness and other concerned organizations, and it will be very important to have a large turnout of concerned citizens attending the press conference as well as the hearing on Peak Oil that will commence in City Hall at 2:00 p.m. that day. Please make an effort to attend these important events, and please encourage your friends to learn about Peak Oil and join you in voicing concerns on July 28. It is not hyperbole that our collective lives may depend upon it.
The hearing on July 28, as presently envisioned, will include an introductory message about Peak Oil, a presentation by author, lecturer, and professor Richard Heinberg of New College in Santa Rosa, presentations by the department of the environment, and a discussion about municipal response from Dave Room of Energy Preparedness. There will be additional input encouraged from the general public, which is limited to 3 minutes per person.
Please attend the press conference and hearing that day, and encourage other concerned citizens, as well as your friends and associates, to join you.

AMBIOTICA.1/ A quasi-ambient lounge...
SATURDAY, JULY 29, 2006
@ANON GALLERY
8:30 pm - 2 am
On Friday, July 28th and Saturday, July 29th Anon Salon celebrates 15 years of pARTy production. (before that, was Club Anon, GlasHaus and Cobra Lounge...)
Saturday will be our regular and always un-usual party-themed event - this month, The Soma Rose Beauty Pageant - <http://www.anonsalon.com/july06>
Friday, we will introduce a new bi-monthly event called "AMBITOICA!" - a quasi-ambient cocktail lounge, launched with great success at this year's Harmony Festival. We would love to have you join us for its maiden voyage, as we move to raise a new private club where new social adventures can unfold and more softly spoken insights can be shared, in a more sophisticated lounge environment. Semi-formal attire is requested, men in jackets with fanciful ties, and women in gowns and sexy shoes. This is a chance to dress to the tens and groove in martini-time.
Join us for this eclectic mix of visionary voices and creative connections that will allow us to integrate playfully without the usual soundtrack of thumping dance music.
There will be stimulating art and music to interact with, and we welcome your suggestions at all times. The event will start at 8:30, after dinner and end about 2am, and we are asking $20 per person with no guest list (since we would all be on it!), but which will include well drinks, hors d'oeuvres and entertainment for the evening.
Our first night will feature the art of... and the jazz-tastic stylings of Luna Groove's electronica shaman, ALEX THEORY LIVE, a sophisticated blend of rare groove jazz & electronic breakbeats intertwined with acoustic upright bass, saxophone, sultry vocals, and spoken word poetics.

# August 10th through 14
July 2006 is the month to Bring the War Home to cities across the
nation with Direct Action and Civil Disobedience to shut down all metropolitan
areas. Then organizers from around the world will converge on DC August
10th through the 14th to confront the true war machine.
SHUT DOWN DC: August 10th through 14th, 2006. There will be massive
decentralized direct action against all government and corporate
entities.
The vast majority of government and corporate war profiteers are based
in DC, and its time they experience war first hand. Let's bring the war to
their homes, their offices, their parties and everywhere else they go.
As long as there is a war abroad, we must also have a war at home. With
the Iran war looming, the Iraq war lingering, and dozens of other wars
raging, it is long past time to bring the war home.
With thousands expected to descend on our fair city, mass housing, free
vegan food, and a convergence space will all be available. Mark your
calendars, tell your friends, plan to come to DC August 10th through
14th, 2006.
More information and details will be coming, and our website should be
up soon. Keep checking back for more details. In the meantime email

# SRL August 11 in San Jose
Anyone heard of Survival Research Labratories? These guys are a
hoot, and they are coming to town!
If you've ever seen Seamen at BM, SRL is the authentic article.
These guys regularly get kicked out of town the night before the
event by the fire marshals. Of course, that's not going to happen on
the 11th, but the show will not be something to be missed. All the
drama of a war zone with the choreography of Cirque Du Soleil. But
bring your earplugs! A gas mask isn't a bad idea to pack if you have
one handy, but it's unlikely you would need it these days.
The last show I saw of theirs was legend, out on pier 70 in SF about
a decade ago. -Brian

INFAMOUS CIRCUS KILLING SPREE CONTINUES
Ringling Kills 4 Baby Elephants In 8 Years
Bertha dead at a few months of age.
September 2005: Ringling did not announce Bertha's birth or death.
Riccardo dead at 8 months of age.
August 4, 2004: Ringling claims he fell off a 19-inch-high-round platform. After making Riccardo suffer all night with two broken legs, Ringling took him to a hospital the next morning where x-rays revealed "severe and irreparable fractures." Riccardo was killed that day.
Benjamin dead at 4 years of age.
1999: Drowned in a pond while attempting to avoid "trainer" Pat Harned, who witnesses said "poked" Benjamin with an ankus. A USDA investigator concluded that seeing and/or being "touched" or "poked" by Harned with an ankus caused physical harm and lead to Benjamin's death. This incident was videotaped but Ringling requested the USDA not release it to the public.
Kenny dead at 3 years of age.
1998: Ringling elephant "trainers" Gunther Gebel-Williams and Mark Gebel, against veterinarian orders, forced Kenny, who was bleeding from his rectum, to perform. Kenny died later that day after passing a large amount of blood from his rectum.
Ringling routinely uses ropes and chains to separate 18-month-old-baby elephants from their mothers. USDA told Ringling that this practice violates Federal law; Ringling defended it calling it "industry standard."
In the wild female elephants never leave their mothers; males leave at about age 13-15 years.
Chained Most of Their Lives
Elephants in the wild can roam up to 50 miles a day. Ringling keeps elephants chained by 1 front and 1 back leg for most of their lives; the rest of the time they are confined in small barren pens in parking lots.

It needs to be said now, loudly: those who devise and carry out Israeli policies have made Israel into a monster, and it has come time for all of us -- all Israelis, all Jews who allow Israel to speak for them, all Americans who do nothing to end U.S. support for Israel and its murderous policies -- to recognize that we stain ourselves morally by continuing to sit by while Israel carries out its atrocities against the Palestinians.

The real issue with Gore is why he did nothing from 1993 to 2001 and
pushed many policies that made overconsumption (root cause of climate
crisis) much worse.
The science of "Inconvenient Truth" is excellent, but it completely
avoids any understanding of the many obstacles toward shifting course.
This isn't "bashing" -- merely pointing out obstacles to solving the
problems.
If Gore stays out of electoral politics, he could be more useful in
sounding the alarm. But I don't expect remedies to come from him.
I've been to East Liverpool, Ohio (in 1993).

"It has become something of a challenge to stay abreast of the continuing carnage in Iraq," writes William Rivers Pitt. "We still have tens of thousands of soldiers there. Nineteen of them have died since the beginning of July, and 2,553 have died since the whole thing started. 150 Iraqi civilians have been killed in the last three days, adding to the 6,000 civilians who have been killed in the last two months, adding to the tens of thousands who have been killed over the last three years."

Shift freight from trucks to trains
http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/opinion/278115_transit20.html
Trains will never compete with roads as long as the govt pays for
roads and the railroad co's have to pay for tracks.
Buy a truck and you have free access to many billions of dollars of road.
As a result, the track infrastructure has withered, many have been
converted to trails, and the remaining tracks are nearly 100%
utilized.
Europe is much more rational. But the US is down the rathole of
unsupportable subsidies for bad behavior.
If the government were to subsidize tracks, or charge truckers road
taxes 10x higher that actually equal the damage they do to the roads,
that would be a good start. Doesn't sound like a way for a politician
to win friends, either way.
By the way, if one truck equals the c02 of 4 cars, as the article
suggests, we should eliminate cars, not trucks! One truck is a heck
of a lot more useful than 4 cars with one person in each. (arl
07-22-2006 - A Scanner Darkly, with special appearances by Phillip K. Dick's Daughters
IN THEATERS NOW! Starring Keanu Reeves
In a future America where the government has lost the war on drugs, undercover cop Bob Arctor (Keanu Reeves) is ordered to do the unthinkable: start spying on his friends. As he struggles with loyalties and a double life, he starts to experiment with Substance D, embarking on a confused and paranoid journey into the absurd. In adapting Philip K. Dick's cautionary novel of drug use, writer/director Richard Linklater (Before Sunset) employs the same photography and animation techniques he used in Waking Life. Co-starring Robert Downey Jr., Woody Harrelson, Winona Ryder and Rory Cochrane. Philip K. Dick has slowly but steadily become a cultural icon with his works of mind-bending fiction. His first novel debuted in 1955, and ever since, his cumulative works have sold roughly 20 million copies and been translated to 25 different languages. Considered by some measures to be the most adapted science-fiction author in the history of film, Dick has created futuristic worlds in many of his works, several of which have been adapted into feature films: Blade Runner, Total Recall, Screamers, Minority Report, Impostor, and Paycheck. The movies have brought new fans to Dick’s work. Never out of print in its 27-year existence, A Scanner Darkly is one of the three top-selling Dick novels and only the second novel of Dick’s to be adapted. A Scanner Darkly became a film due to a respect for Philip K. Dick shared by writer/director Linklater and producer Tommy Pallotta—a mutual admiration often talked about on the set of Waking Life. To stay true to their goal, Linklater and Pallotta enlisted the help of two of the stewards of the Philip K. Dick trust, Dick’s daughters Laura Leslie and Isa Hackett. “We were originally approached by Tommy with the enticement of a faithful adaptation,” say Leslie and Hackett. “When we read Richard's screenplay, and then had the opportunity to meet with him and discuss his and our visions of ‘Scanner,’ we knew this was the right way to go.” Linklater recalls the Bay Area meeting with the author’s daughters. “I think they appreciated the fact that I wanted to stay faithful to the book and tell the whole story,” he explains. “I wasn’t going to be cavalier with the drug aspect. They were very frank—they said, ‘You know, if it wasn’t for drugs, our dad would still be writing today, instead of dying in 1982.’ It’s been a wonderful addition to have Phil K. Dick’s daughters on board with us spiritually.”
