# Radio Future Salon Fri July 22 6-7pm(Networking), 7-9(Talk) FREE

Future of Radio? You may ask, what can there be new in a pretty straight forward technology, that was invented in 1893? Well, if you create a universal receiver and put the intelligence into the software, all in a sudden you open up possibilities that your moms tube radio just didn't have. Now you are able to tune into your Microwave oven, which is fun for about 30 seconds.

Software radios can play up and down the frequency band, which is pretty cool. Now let's add transmission to the game, again universal transmission up and down the frequency band. This is so interesting, that the FCC and may be even the FBI would like to know about it.

Software radios can also use the spectrum way more efficient. Now if on one frequency someone is sending everyone else has to be silent. Software radios can filter out of a cacophony of transmissions the packages that are relevant for them. I read somewhere that if it is getting too noisy they can switch to a different band without missing a beat in Beethoven's 5th. Which gives you almost unlimited bandwidth (the thing that the telcos paid billions for in Europe).

Matt Ettus one of the driving forces behind GNU Software Radio will bring some clarity into these new developments next Friday the 22nd at the Radio Future Salon.

Session Abstract:

Matt Ettus, GNU Radio team member and Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) creator, will be discussing both the technical and regulatory aspects of open source software radio, and how GNU Radio and the USRP fit in. He will also cover software radio's impact on spectrum policy, and will conclude with a small demo of the USRP.

In a software radio, software defines the transmitted waveforms, and software demodulates the received waveforms. GNU Radio is an open source software radio framework which allows for experimentation, rapid prototyping and deployment of complex Software Radio systems on generic microprocessors. Software radio is becoming increasingly important as a technology for implementing communication systems. By performing most or all processing in software, it allows for extremely versatile radio systems and makes multi-standard systems possible.

The Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) is a hardware component which allows for the physical realization of complex wideband software radios using commodity PCs. It allows for up to 4 antennas, enabling MIMO and Smart Antenna systems. The hardware design is completely open and free.

Bio:

Matt Ettus, founder of Ettus Research LLC, has been working in wireless design for 8 years, and has extensive experience in ASIC-, FPGA-, and software-based communication systems, as well as System-on-chip RF architecture and board-level RF design. Matt is a major contributor to the GNU Radio project, a free framework for Software Radio, and is the creator of the Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP). He holds an MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University, and dual BS degrees in EE and CS.

# Community Forum on the Sydeshow Controversy Fri July 22 8 pm-10 pm Free
In the context of an African community facing school
closures, festival shut-downs, no art and music
programs, the sideshows are a culmination of their
being no venues for self-expression and advancement
for young African people. The city of Oakland is using
the sideshows as the latest excuse to push black
people out and make way for white corporations and
homeowners who do not value African life.

Railroad Tracks at Fair Ave, Santa Cruz

latest details.

2:00 ~ 6:00 PM, American University
Collaboration strategy brainstorm among truth movement leaders, veteran &
victim family groups, indie media activists and foreign journalists.

OVERALL PURPOSE
Potent insights into the coup d'état we face emerge whenever citizens
working on Iraq lies, 9/11, troop abuse, stolen elections and/or the
"missing" government trillions gather and compare notes. This DC Emergency
Truth Convergence presumes that we now have enough dangerous truths,
damning facts, and populist media to deliver the evidence of treachery
throughout the land. It's now time to clarify that vision, join with
veterans and victim families, and assist media activists everywhere in
reenacting Paul Revere.

THE CHALLENGE TO INDIE MEDIA ACTIVISTS

Truth Math 101: In 2004, 70% of Karl Rove's red voters still believed
Saddam had WMD and trysts with Al Qaeda. 70% of Americans who knew the
truth voted blue. According to Zogby, most New Yorkers reject the official
9/11 story. The blues carried New York by over one million votes and NYC
by 81%. Do the math. Truth matters. Truth matters more when the country's
in crisis. Truth matters most when thousands are dying without a clue.
This is the challenge facing our independent media. Leaders selling war,
repression and corporate rule could fool a lot less people a lot less of
the time if indie media flooded the streets and airwaves with badly needed
truths. Today's bloody liars are red. Tomorrow's may be blue. Only
grassroots media vigilance and collaboration can thwart their propaganda
and reverse their corporate coup. George Orwell taught us, "in a time of
universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act." Multiply that
act by a thousand street zines, blogs, and community broadcast outlets and
we can finally overthrow this coup.

Please come to DC and
END THE FEAR HERE!
Publicize the Master Lies
Behind the Endless War
.

# Friday Night Roller Disco July 22 8:30 P.M. to Midnight (or later if we want to)
Free to attend - $5.00 for Skate Rental
Well skaters, the time is drawing closer each day. Soon we will all be celebrating life again in Black Rock City and I CAN'T WAIT!!!!!!. This year the Black Rock Roller Disco skaters are working our wheels to the core to bring our Golden Gate Park skate scene to the playa. The Black Rock Roller Disco will be on the Esplanade at Burning Man with more skates, better skates, and better sound system than ever before. We encourage everyone to bring their own, but if you don't have skates, we're ready for you.

Are you ready to get ready for the Playa? It's time to get down right funky on the old school roller-skates or the rollerblades as we present the Friday Night Roller Disco. From July 22 until we leave for the desert on Aug. 26, every Friday night we are going give you a taste of what you will experience on the playa at the Black Rock Roller Disco.

We will transform Ferry Plaza into an outdoor roller disco. This is where the Friday Night Skate meets every Friday. The Black Rock Rollers are taking it over from 8:30 P.M. to midnight. The dress is normally 70's roller disco style, but we're outdoors so dress for the weather. Be creative and prepare to have a fantastic time.

The cost will be FREE. That's right, free If you have your own skates. There will be both roller skate and inline skate rentals available. All we ask is that you make a $5.00 donation towards skate rental. ALL FUNDS RAISED WILL GO TOWARDS BRINGING THE BLACK ROCK ROLLER DISCO TO THE PLAYA IN 2005

We want all our Burning Man friends and others to come join with us as we bring a whole new party scene to the Embarcadero. If you are interested and need more info, send an e-mail to the GodFather at Sk8GodFather@cora.org and we'll get rollin' on it right away.

We are going to have a fantastic time. For more information contact David Miles at 415-752-1967.

 Downing Street Memo-Gate: Rally
 Downing Street Minutes 3rd Anniversary
Grand Lake Theatre 3200 Grand Ave  Oakland, CA.
You're invited to be part of a national day of action on July 23.
The Downing Street memo is a shocking document, which reveals that the Bush administration "fixed" facts to sell the case for war. If George Bush engaged in a conspiracy to deceive Congress and the American people about the basis for going to war, that would constitute a High Crime and would be grounds for impeachment. MPJC is part of a coalition After Downing Street working with Rep. John Conyers to publicize this memo and demand accountability.
 *      Examine the Bush Administration's justification for war.
 *      Were intelligence and facts fixed?
 *      The American people deserve to know the truth!

are you getting what you want?"

 San Francisco, California
or
Sunday, July 24, 2005
 Los Gatos, California

YOU WILL LEARN:

o     The powerful part you play as your own ultimate source of prosperity
o     To understand how your underlying emotions and feelings affect your ability to be successful
o     How your childhood, life experience, and social conditioning have constructed desires and beliefs
o     How to recognize the emotional and mental bonds that stop abundant living from being part of your life
o     How to magnetize what you really want, and to make it come quickly
o     How to empower new ideas that will lead you to a more fulfilling and harmonious life

COURSE TOPICS WILL INCLUDE:
o     Honing your life's purpose and passion based on your Internal Guidance System
o     Distinguishing the beliefs that hold you back from getting what you want in life
o     Applying the principles of Flow vs. Force, so that you flow with more ease in your life more often, and mistakenly apply force less often
o     Achieving greater spiritual awareness and connection with the Divine

TESTIMONIAL:

“A few months ago I took a one-day Power Manifestation Course with Zen DeBrücke that has profoundly impacted my approach to knowing what I want, meeting my life's challenges, understanding my own internal guidance, and breaking through areas where I've felt stuck.

“I feel that I have finally discovered a program and mentor that help me understand why my personal approach to creating what I want in my life takes so much energy and doesn't work half the time...Zen DeBrücke's Power Manifestation Course is the real deal...I was totally shocked to see how much I loved every minute.”

Taking Place at The Pride of Bryant Street, CELL Space! 2050 Bryant SF $10

Yes that's right ladies and gents, Qbox, The Flaming Lotus Girls (and guys, and gas) and The Seemen would like YOU to attend a fundraiser for Not Burning Man!

The Flaming Lotii and The Seemen have been invited to participate in the
Robodock festival in Amsterdam. Robodock is a brain-tweaking display of art, theater, and technology that will of course blossom and benefit from a
long-needed injection of Flaming Lotusness and (ahem) Seemen.

To do this properly, however, we must first have a debaucherous night of art, celebration, HOT FLG's, machine art, noise performance and countless other amusements designed to instruct, delight and debilitate. Let us entertain you as we part you from your cold, hard-earned cash, the better for us to afford lipstick, fuel, and a seaworthy shipping container.

Wear your finest flame-retardant formal wear and rip-proof ball gowns and come prepared to dance (or twitch arrhythmically) to the soothing strains of our favorite noise bands and the relaxing din of stunning mechnical, kinetic and electronic art that we have brought from the four corners of the bay area for the edification of you, the discerning Qbox sychophant.

There will be prizes, opportunities, a gallery of extravaganzas available for purchase, mysterious surprises and all sorts of other things to hold your interest while our crack Qbox staff lovingly plumb the depths of your wallet.

Personal Evolution -- A Brief Introduction
Monday, July 25th, 2005
7pm to 10pm

Full details here:

http://emotionalawareness.com/courses/intro.php

There are many schools of thought and areas of focus in the world of
personal development and spiritual teaching. There are very few that offer
a systematic map for taking wherever you may be at emotionally, and
getting to a state of grace, ease, flexibility, compassion, and love. Even
fewer integrate Western psychology and Eastern spiritual traditions...

This workshop will provide such a systematic map. A map for Personal
Evolution.

You may be frustrated, irritable, experience fear or blame, you may lack
the mental training and emotional healing necessary to move with ease to a
grounding in rational as well as trans-rational, spiritual principles.

This workshop will give you a framework within which to begin healing,
developing a relationship with, and finally deepening your Self such that
you can contain and reflect back a larger portion of the kosmos than you
previously thought possible.  A framework to accelerate your Personal

In addition to all of that, you will have a direct experience of your
Spiritual Source using any problematic behavior or thought patterns as the
gateway.

Be well. Evolve your self. Jason

# "Is San Francisco Going to Pot?"
Featuring: Drug Policy Alliance director Ethan Nadelmann and Mayor Gavin Newsom

FREE lecture on drug policy reform
San Francisco is once again at the center of a national debate. More than 80% of San Franciscans say medical marijuana should be legally available and a majority even supports regulating, controlling, and taxing marijuana more or less like alcohol. But the federal government says "no" to medical marijuana, just as patients, advocates, bureaucrats, and politicians in San Francisco attempt to create a regulatory system in response to the proliferation of "pot clubs." Will "the city that knows how" do the right thing? Mayor Gavin Newsom and Drug Policy Alliance director Ethan Nadelmann will tackle the controversial question, "Is San Francisco Going to Pot?"

# Burning Man in the Hood - a community building summer camp Wed July 20 Hayes Valley
Wednesday, July 27th at 6pm.... there will be a gathering at Koshland Park, on the corner of Page & Buchanan(Lower Haight/ Hayes Valley), to discuss creating a community building summer camp project.

This project is simply an opportunity to create a space to play, make friends, share skills, stories and resources. Think of it as bringing Burning man to the hood. In fact... David Best's Burning Man style Temple is just a few blocks down the street!

The intent is to combine our abilities and imaginations to produce an event, or series of events, as a forum for discovering commonwealth. Often with Burning Man camps and communities in general, they are semi-exclusive circles of friends. This social adventure is about cultural exchange and expanding the circle to include everyone-- youth and elders-- rich and poor.

The camp activities will likely be between August 8th to the 19th, ending in some sort of show. Thus far we have a hip hop dance troupe keen to take part, Kelly's Peeps. They rock hare core and will teach you some moves to impress your playa honey. There will also be hula-hooping, stilt walking, tree house hammocks, potlucks, bedtime stories, plus much more.... and whatever you want to bring to the scene. Maybe we''ll even have an art car/ funky bicycle freak parade. It will be a great way to get prepared for the burn.

Regina Dick-Endrizzi, assistant to Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, and other key people will be attending Wednesday July 27th, and the following day we have a meeting at city hall to share whatever we come up with, so this is a real opportunity to make something happen. Your participation will be greatly appreciated. And please invite anyone you think would be interested.

This is a project of the Action Hero Network, a social-profit organization focused on empowerment and activation. To share what is learned from this event with neighborhoods everywhere, we need funding to document the process on digital video for broadcast on the web, and request your support. Contributions can be made simply and safely through this link:

http://www.ihcenter.org/groups/actionheronetwork.html
or mailed to: International Humanities Center P.O. Box 923 Malibu, CA 90265
Made payable to: IHC/action hero network
I hope to see you at Koshland Park on the 27th, 6pm. Bring a mug for tea. If you can hook-up a snack to share... please do!
Have fun! -Cory 818-331-9707

# China Three Gorges video screening and photo show

Wednesday, July 27th

6pm-9pm video screeing at 7pm sharp

Free, donations accepted

Space Gallery presents Holding Ground Under Water, a one night only photography exhibit and video screening of footage documenting the population resettlement along the Yangtze River in China's famed Three Gorges.

Between 2001 and 2003, photojournalist and video artist Benjamin Sandler made four separate trips to the Three Gorges region in China. He traveled the length of the river, visiting large cities and small towns due to be affected by construction of the Three Gorges Dam. Along the way he conducted numerous impromptu interviews with people directly affected by the dam and the resettlement scheme. Reactions to the project were candid and reflected many varied viewpoints. Mr. Sandler's photographs and video are meant to provide a lasting document of a region and its people that will be permanently altered.

The sluice gates of the controversial Three Gorges Dam were closed in June of 2003 and the first stage of inundation has been completed. The water level rose to 443 feet, washing away what remained of dismantled cities and evacuated pasturelands. Already, more than half of those affected by the project have been forced to relocate to new cities built on higher ground, or to 'host communities' in far removed coastal cities. By 2009, if the construction project is completed on schedule, an estimated 1.2 to 2 million people will have been forced to relocate.

This show is for one night only, Wednesday, July 27th from 6-9pm. The video screening will be at 7pm sharp, and with special permission from Four Square Productions Canada, will begin with a 40 minute piece entitled Man vs. Water, part 2 in a 3 part series produced for Discovery Channel Canada. Water, Water examines this century's next great challenge, managing the world's water resources. In addition there will be a silent photo auction, to raise money to translate interviews, and commence editing for a feature length movie. All in attendance will receive a 4x6 inch signed and editioned print, while they last.

Holding Ground Under Water is part of an ongoing photo and video documentary on the Three Gorges Dam and it's impact on the people and environment in the Yangtze River Basin.

Simnuke Art Exhibit Indicts Sixty Years of the Atomic Age at
San Francisco's RX Gallery From July 28 through August 25

San Francisco, a city known for activism and creativity, will host the
emotional and politically charged Simnuke Art Exhibit on July 28th, 7pm
to midnight, at Rx Gallery, 132 Eddy Street. Over the last sixty years,
people
all over the world have lived with the looming threat of nuclear arms.
For the artists exhibiting in the Simnuke Art Exhibit, this struggle
expresses itself through searing commentary and stunning artwork
condemning the nuclear arms race.

The Simnuke Art Exhibit is part of the Simnuke Project, a three-part
memorial to the atomic age. On July 16, 2005 at 05:29:45 local time the
Simnuke Project will commemorate the 60-year anniversary of Trinity by
simulating the look and feel of the detonation of a nuclear device.

The art of the Simnuke Art Exhibit is co-curated by Sasha Harris-Cronin
and Max Carlson and comprises 20 artists from the United States and
Japan. The exhibit pieces will range from photography to kinetic
sculpture, from humorous statements to solemn exposés. In addition,
there will be an exhibit of government documents from the Prelinger
Library tracing the history of the atomic era in public policy.

The artists in the Simnuke Art Exhibit include: Carole Gallagher,
Michael Light, Richard Ross, Aaron Ximm, Yosuke Yamahata, Bryan Cole,
Robert Dohrmann, Joy Garnett, Jenne Giles, Mark Henson, Garret Izumi,
Tracy Jacobs, Kerry Loewen, Yoshiko McFarland, Yumiko Oda, Astrid
Olafsen, Aryana Farsai Roxborough, Corrine Schulze, Elin O'Hara Slavick,
and Jeff Young.

As global nuclear proliferation blooms into reality, and the United
States moves ahead with so-called tactical "bunker busters" and nuclear
arms in space, it is critical that this powerful collection reach an
audience. Co-curator Sasha Harris-Cronin stated, "If we can make one
person leave the gallery, go home, and write their congressperson, then
we have made a difference."

This greenbelt includes agricultural, wilderness, habitat, watershed, and recreational lands and is recognized as essential to the Bay Area's environmental and economic health. All residents share a high quality of life, including access to affordable housing, a good education, cultural amenities, effective public transportation and open space. Finally, there is a widely shared ethic that recognizes the region's interdependence and a system of governance that fosters effective public decision-making to address regional needs.

# NEW GROUP IN TOWN: ANIMAL SWITCHBOARD - GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION - JULY 31
O.K., FOLKS, IT'S TIME TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP -

See the invitation below. As you know, The Fund for Animals office at
Fort Mason was closed recently in the wake of the merger with the Humane
Society of the U.S. In an attempt to keep that office space open as an
invaluable resource center for Bay Area activists, a new group named
ANIMAL SWITCHBOARD has been incorporated (5-member board, no paid
employees). We're on a month-to-month lease with Fort Mason. Monthly
expenses will be at least $500 (rent/phone/fax, etc.) Many of you wrote
in support of keeping the office open, particularly in light of its long
history as a resource and meeting place for local activists and
activities. And many of you receiving this notice have used this
facility over the years--you know who you are. Now it's pay-back time!
WE NEED YOUR BODIES, YOUR IDEAS, AND ESPECIALLY YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
IN THE COMING MONTHS. Consider a monthly, ongoing donation to help keep
this office, why dontcha? Volunteers are also needed to staff the phone
and do basic office work. Computer expertise especially welcome. You?

Please contact ANIMAL SWITCHBOARD at 415/474-4021 (or Eric Mills at
510/652-5603) to tell us how you can help. And do come to the Grand
Opening Party on Sunday, July 31, 2:00-5:00 p.m. We'll show you a good
time.

# Jewels in the Square: Hot Pink Feathers with Blue Bone Express
 July 31 2pm-4pm Free
Hot Pink Feathers' Rio-style samba, cabaret and burlesque is sure to bring the enthusiasm of Carnaval to the Plaza. Kelly "Kellita" Garton has been delighting audiences with her signature "1000-watt smile" and award-winning shimmy-shake for 5 years. When not dancing solo, Kellita performs with Hot Pink Feathers, the troupe she founded and directs. Kellita and the Feathers have graced the stages of many favorite SF haunts, such as Bimbo's and the Great American Music Hall, and are equally comfortable bringing their revue to intimate clubs and parties or grand affairs. The Feathers are accompanied today by Blue Bone Express, a seven-piece brass band evoking the traditional street sounds of New Orleans. Trumpeter Jara Queeto is the founder and musical director of Mardi Gras band Blue Bone Express. Together these two groups conjure the true spirit of Carnaval that knows no geographic bounds.
