# PETA's United Colors Against Benetton Protest debuts in San Francisco!
campaign to force clothing retailer Benetton to stop using Australian wool – Friday, July 29, at the Benetton on 39 Stockton Street 11: 45 a.m. to 1 p.m.  All materials will be provided, so just bring yourself and anyone else that would like to attend!  We need people who are willing to hold signs and hand out leaflets while some activists hold a banner covered in paints of many colors while crying tears of blood.  This is a creative and powerful demonstration for people to see!

Benetton uses wool from Australia, where sheep endure a gruesome procedure called “mulesing,” in which farmers flip lambs onto their backs, restrain them with metal bars and use gardening shears to cut chunks of flesh from their rumps without any painkillers. When their wool is no longer needed, sheep are crammed by the tens of thousand onto huge, open-decked ships and transported thousands of miles in filthy, disease-ridden conditions, through all weather extremes, to countries in the Middle East and North Africa that have virtually no animal welfare standards, where their throats are slit while they are fully conscious. Sick and injured sheep, treated as mere cargo, are thrown overboard to the sharks or are ground up alive in a shipboard macerator. Although there are more effective, humane alternatives to mulesing and live export readily available today, producers have no incentive to change as long as companies like Benetton continue to purchase Australian wool. Benetton can help save sheep from this suffering simply by refusing to buy wool from Australia until mulesing and live export are ended.

We’ve sent Benetton reports detailing currently available alternatives to these horrific practices and video exposing the extreme suffering of sheep in the Australian wool industry—but the company has done nothing. To see for yourself why PETA is asking you and thousands of other activists around the world to help us boycott Benetton, click here.  Please cross-post this message and this video clip so that it may reach others who are interested in helping get the word out!

For more information on this campaign, please visit UnitedCrueltyofBenetton.com. PETA is thankful that you’re on the activist network and we encourage you to take full advantage of that network by contacting us anytime with questions, requests or concerns!  If you have any questions specific to this demonstration please contact our campaigner, Jodi Ruckley at JodiR@peta.org Hope to see you at the protest!

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that
we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness, that
most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous,
talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of
God. Your playing small doesn't serve the world. There's nothing
enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure
around you. You were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within
you. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own
light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same.
As we're liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically
liberates others.

This greenbelt includes agricultural, wilderness, habitat, watershed, and recreational lands and is recognized as essential to the Bay Area's environmental and economic health. All residents share a high quality of life, including access to affordable housing, a good education, cultural amenities, effective public transportation and open space. # NEW GROUP IN TOWN: ANIMAL SWITCHBOARD - GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION - JULY 31
O.K., FOLKS, IT'S TIME TO PUT UP OR SHUT UP -

See the invitation below. As you know, The Fund for Animals office at
Fort Mason was closed recently in the wake of the merger with the Humane
Society of the U.S. In an attempt to keep that office space open as an
invaluable resource center for Bay Area activists, a new group named
ANIMAL SWITCHBOARD has been incorporated (5-member board, no paid
employees). We're on a month-to-month lease with Fort Mason. Monthly
expenses will be at least $500 (rent/phone/fax, etc.) Many of you wrote
in support of keeping the office open, particularly in light of its long
history as a resource and meeting place for local activists and
activities. And many of you receiving this notice have used this
facility over the years--you know who you are. Now it's pay-back time!
WE NEED YOUR BODIES, YOUR IDEAS, AND ESPECIALLY YOUR FINANCIAL SUPPORT
IN THE COMING MONTHS. Consider a monthly, ongoing donation to help keep
this office, why dontcha? Volunteers are also needed to staff the phone
and do basic office work. Computer expertise especially welcome. You?

Please contact ANIMAL SWITCHBOARD at 415/474-4021 (or Eric Mills at
510/652-5603) to tell us how you can help. And do come to the Grand
Opening Party on Sunday, July 31, 2:00-5:00 p.m. We'll show you a good
time.

# Jewels in the Square: Hot Pink Feathers with Blue Bone Express
 July 31 2pm-4pm Free
Hot Pink Feathers' Rio-style samba, cabaret and burlesque is sure to bring the enthusiasm of Carnaval to the Plaza. Kelly "Kellita" Garton has been delighting audiences with her signature "1000-watt smile" and award-winning shimmy-shake for 5 years. When not dancing solo, Kellita performs with Hot Pink Feathers, the troupe she founded and directs. Kellita and the Feathers have graced the stages of many favorite SF haunts, such as Bimbo's and the Great American Music Hall, and are equally comfortable bringing their revue to intimate clubs and parties or grand affairs. The Feathers are accompanied today by Blue Bone Express, a seven-piece brass band evoking the traditional street sounds of New Orleans. Trumpeter Jara Queeto is the founder and musical director of Mardi Gras band Blue Bone Express. Together these two groups conjure the true spirit of Carnaval that knows no geographic bounds. *(Radio Frequency Identification Devices)
i.e.tracking tags in Library books, cds, etc. read remotely by radiofrequency radiation equipment
put on by the Berkeley Board of Library Trustees at
South Berkeley Senior Center 2939 Ellis at Ashby
(2 blocks West of M.L.King Jr. Way & Ashby BART)
Mon Aug 1 6:30-9pm There will be 2 Panels:

40 minutes for Questions and Comments from the public
If you can't come early, be sure to come by 7:30pm
 And Ask The Hard Questions!
This is the most important chance you'll have to make your voice heard!
Why is this community forum being held after the fact rather than before RFID was bought and installed for $643,000 of our taxes? What are the labor and maintenance cost overruns?
How can the library guarantee our privacy threatened by government agents and/or criminals with portable scanners? Has the City of Berkeley accepted a free server from Homeland Security and if so will the Berkeley library computer be connected to it?
After how much time can male and female library workers expect their coworkers to come down with breast cancer, memory problems, immune system disfunction and/or brain tumors?
What protections will there be for children, the elderly, disabled, those already battling cancer?

# Ask a Scientist - Genomes, from Human to Neanderthal Wed Aug 3 7-9 pm Free
Until very recently, the only DNA recoverable from extinct species was from the mitochondria -- the cell's energy producing organelles. While mtDNA reveals much about our evolutionary family tree, it's nuclear DNA that tells the real story of life. Now, with the exciting news that scientists at the DOE Joint Genome Institute have successfully sequenced nuclear DNA from an extinct cave bear species, that story is about to get even more interesting.
Speaker: Dr. Eddy Rubin, director of the DOE Joint Genome Institute
Ask a Scientist is a new and different kind of lecture series. If you love watching Nova specials and reading Scientific American at the doctor's office, then this event is for you. Enjoy food, drinks, socializing, and conversation about the universe's most fascinating mysteries!

Camp with us along the Wenatchee River!

Rainforest Action Network - Greenpeace - Earth First!

Join us in a forest east of the Cascades for labor day weekend! Bring
all your musician friends for some wild sounds around the campfire.
There will also be many workshops and trainings: tree-climbing,
self-defense, edible and herbal plant walks, gorilla theater, radical
cheerleading, map and compass, timber monitoring, non-violence, gender
dynamics and much more. (Note: if you attend these workshops you’ll be
considered trained and ready to work on Greenpeace, RAN, EF! campaigns.)

About the forest: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington State
approved a plan to log 2,500 acres of federal lands that were burned by
the Fischer Fire in August of 2004. The plan calls for logging in
old-growth forest reserves, and for building or re-building over 15
miles of road. So lawsuits have been filed and loggers are logging as
fast as possible to ensure the courts have no control over the hauling
of 4,000 log trucks of fire adapted forests. It's called an "Economic
Emergency." Details about the lawsuit
