# PETA's United Colors Against Benetton Protest debuts in San Francisco!
campaign to force clothing retailer Benetton to stop using Australian wool – Friday, July 29, at the Benetton on 39 Stockton Street 11: 45 a.m. to 1 p.m. All materials will be provided, so just bring yourself and anyone else that would like to attend! We need people who are willing to hold signs and hand out leaflets while some activists hold a banner covered in paints of many colors while crying tears of blood. This is a creative and powerful demonstration for people to see!
Benetton uses wool from Australia, where sheep endure a gruesome procedure called “mulesing,” in which farmers flip lambs onto their backs, restrain them with metal bars and use gardening shears to cut chunks of flesh from their rumps without any painkillers. When their wool is no longer needed, sheep are crammed by the tens of thousand onto huge, open-decked ships and transported thousands of miles in filthy, disease-ridden conditions, through all weather extremes, to countries in the Middle East and North Africa that have virtually no animal welfare standards, where their throats are slit while they are fully conscious. Sick and injured sheep, treated as mere cargo, are thrown overboard to the sharks or are ground up alive in a shipboard macerator. Although there are more effective, humane alternatives to mulesing and live export readily available today, producers have no incentive to change as long as companies like Benetton continue to purchase Australian wool. Benetton can help save sheep from this suffering simply by refusing to buy wool from Australia until mulesing and live export are ended.
We’ve sent Benetton reports detailing currently available alternatives to these horrific practices and video exposing the extreme suffering of sheep in the Australian wool industry—but the company has done nothing. ages can participate in a 'Leave No Trace' training and then begin foraging
for Matter Out of Place (M.O.O.P.). Prizes will be awarded for the most
trash collected, the largest piece of trash, the strangest, the most colorful
and more.
The Black Rock Roller disco will provide roller skates and skating
music and the costume-clad Burning Man mobile art "pARTiciPARADE!" will join the festivities around 2:30PM.
Bring a picnic and join strolling clowns, musical performers and artful people for a fun day in celebration of community-based art!
The day will also feature a Gun Bake. If you have a gun and would like

Fort Mason was closed recently in the wake of the merger with the Humane
Society of the U.S. In an attempt to keep that office space open as an
invaluable resource center for Bay Area activists, a new group named
ANIMAL SWITCHBOARD has been incorporated (5-member board, no paid
employees). We're on a month-to-month lease with Fort Mason. Monthly
expenses will be at least $500 (rent/phone/fax, etc.) Many of you wrote
in support of keeping the office open, particularly in light of its long
history as a resource and meeting place for local activists and
activities. And many of you receiving this notice have used this
facility over the years--you know who you are. Now it's pay-back time!

A week of intense magic, ritual and learning in the
deep woods of southern Oregon. Our magical tradition honors the wild, and

Monday: 9:00 am - 3:00 pm Canoeing and swimming on/in the Russian River. Departure by 6:00 pm.

Join us in a forest east of the Cascades for labor day weekend! Bring
all your musician friends for some wild sounds around the campfire.
There will also be many workshops and trainings: tree-climbing,
self-defense, edible and herbal plant walks, gorilla theater, radical
cheerleading, map and compass, timber monitoring, non-violence, gender
dynamics and much more. (Note: if you attend these workshops you’ll be
considered trained and ready to work on Greenpeace, RAN, EF! campaigns.)
About the forest: Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest in Washington State
approved a plan to log 2,500 acres of federal lands that were burned by
the Fischer Fire in August of 2004. The plan calls for logging in
old-growth forest reserves, and for building or re-building over 15
miles of road. So lawsuits have been filed and loggers are logging as
fast as possible to ensure the courts have no control over the hauling
of 4,000 log trucks of fire adapted forests. It's called an "Economic
