Background:
July 17-Aug. 21, 1988 at age 61, C�sar Ch�vez conducted his last and longest public fast, his Fast for Life, to call attention to farm workers and their children stricken by pesticides. C�sar said "A fast is first and foremost personal. The fast is also a heartfelt prayer for purification and strengthening for all those who work beside me in the farm worker movement. The fast is also an act of penance for those in positions of moral authority and for all men and women activists who know what is right and just, who know that they could and should do more. During the past few years I have been studying the plague of pesticides on our land and our food. The evil is far greater than even I had thought it to be, it threatens to choke out the life of our people and also the life system that supports us all. The solution to this deadly crisis will not be found in the arrogance of the powerful, but in solidarity with the weak. Together, all things are possible." Training: Indigenous Permaculture in El Salvador (June 1st Application Deadline) � The communities of Maquilishuat Nahuat peoples and the cooperative of El Mansano will host 10 international participants. The two communities are located in northwestern El Salvador. We will work with community members building a community center, work with children in elementary schools, practice sustainable forestry management, help with composting toilets and water catchment systems, practice traditional and sustainable agriculture, promote biodiesel, and help with adobe and traditional house construction. We'll enjoy home stays with local families and explore the beautiful and dramatic natural surroundings. Note that these are remote rural location. There is no road access directly to the communities. Basic knowledge of Spanish is required (the equivalent of at least two college semesters). Application deadline: 6/1. Cost: $750 plus airfare. Class: "Economics" with Doug Dowd � Doug Dowd's popular course on economics will meet twice a month from April through September. A San Francisco native, Dowd is a radical economist, economic historian, currently a professor at two universities in Italy, the author of more than a dozen books, and lifelong political activist. Film Fundraiser: "Caught in the Crossfire: The Untold Story of Falluja" � Unembedded journalist Dahr Jamail, independent filmmaker Mark Manning, and Gold Star mother Nadia McCaffry will present testimony detailing the physical, emotional and economic costs of the Iraq War to both the American and Iraqi people. TV Program: "...The Restoration of Common Murres to Devil's Slide Rock" � The program will air on KRCB at 9:30pm as part of the PBS series Natural Heroes. In 1986, a breeding colony of Common Murres on Devil's Slide Rock off the coast of San Francisco was devastated by an oil spill. Using innovative restoration techniques in a difficult location, dedicated scientists worked with local schools and government agencies to restore these diving seabirds to their ancestral home. Book Event: "Bikes of Burden" � Dutch photographer Hans Kemp is based in South East Asia. Bikes of Burden is his photographic tribute to the multitude of motorbikes in Vietnam, the little engines that make the country's economy tick. In Vietnam, where the motorbike is the main mode of transport, bikes are loaded with every imaginable kind of product and produce in seemingly impossible stacks. Bikes of Burden contains 148 color photographs of drivers ferrying around the cities and countryside with loads that defy credibility. There will be a slide show of Hans Kemp's photographs.
