AJR36, our resolution to Bring Home our California National Guard from Iraq, has a HEARING scheduled with the Committee on Veterans Affairs this Wednesday August 16th at 2:30 p.m. Mazel Tov! to everyone, including Loni Hancock, who has worked so hard for AJR36 to come this far!
Our Assemblymember Joe Nation, heads this vets committee. We need to call or visit his office BEFORE the 16th to urge him to allow AJR36 to go to the floor. See suggested script below. Your presence is CRUCIAL! We assume the pro-war veterans will be there in force. Our State Legislature is adjourning for the year on August 31st, which makes your presence now even more critical. It is up to US to make sure they do NOT adjourn until they have voted on AJR36. Monsanto wants to pass preemption legislation in California – SB 1056. This bill will come to a vote in Assembly this week and may reach the Senate soon thereafter.
To stop SB 1056 we need to call our legislators and THANK them for supporting local democracy, health, and environment and opposing SB 1056! In Marin our legislators are:

When we hear about soldiers and casualties in war, much too often we perceive these human beings merely as statistics. Capturing the words and emotions of the mothers whose sons and daughters are fighting and dying in Iraq, director Angeliki Giannakopoulos puts a human face on these soldiers in this extraordinarily powerful portrait of love, suffering and our common humanity.
MY CHILD explores how these mothers manage to get through each day knowing that bullets could be destroying the “center of their universe.”
And then there are the other mothers. The ones whose children come back in pieces…or not at all. How do they carry on when their precious children return to them, somehow less than when they last saw them…or after the messengers of death, dressed in uniform have shown up at their door?

The poetic imagination flows from the depths of the universe itself. This workshop explores the joys of poetry and spoken word, awakening the playful poet and wordsmith within. Through writing, reciting, and listening to poetry, participants will celebrate the sacred cosmos of language, and cultivate inspiration for the creative process. In addition, the workshop will engage cultural issues of cosmology, justice, politics, and the ecological and social challenges of our time.

This film focuses on Cuba's transition from an industrial petroleum-based society to a sustainable society, as a result of their loss of petroleum when their source, the Soviet Union, collapsed. With less than 2 weeks notice, Cubans were faced with a 90% reduction in petroleum based products. With no food being delivered to stores because of fuel shortages for transportation, on average most Cubans lost 20 lbs. Lawns and public parks were turned into vegetable gardens.

& Lagunitas Creek Watershed, Marin County
Participants will learn cutting-edge restoration and monitoring techniques, including road decommissioning, biotechnical streambank stabilization, water quality monitoring, native plant propagation, underwater salmonid identification, and more. A Friday night orientation will highlight local perspectives on salmon restoration in Marin County. On Saturday evening TBA will host a banquet where we will all share music and stories.

… Jim Harrington, aquatic bioassessment pioneer, will lead a field session focused on how macro-invertebrate sampling can be used as a tool for assessing the health of local creeks.

… Jim Locke, a local geology professor from College of Marin will discuss the response of salmon populations to geology.
… David Lewis from UC Cooperative Extension will lead a Tomales Bay Watershed Management workshop and sustainable farm tour that addresses water quality priorities and techniques.
… Bioengineering workshop where participants will have an opportunity to build organic structures with native materials to help both repair eroding banks and provide habitat for salmonids.
… Tour of SPAWN's community-based projects in the San Geronimo Valley including their new Raincatchment Design Project at the Lagunitas School, a new bioengineered bank stabilization site and riparian reforestation, native plant nursery, and new land trust purchase...

One of America’s most eloquent promoters of rural life and local economies, Wendell Berry has inspired the nation to recognize our connection to the land and the farmers that grow our food. On Friday, September 8, Marin Organic will host a conversation between Berry and best-selling author Michael Pollan at Toby’s Feedbarn in Point Reyes Station, California.
The evening event is a fundraiser for Kentuckians For The Commonwealth and Marin Organic and is co-sponsored by Marin Agricultural Land Trust, Center for Urban Education About Sustainable Agriculture, Center for Ecoliteracy, Point Reyes Books, Toby’s Feedbarn and Manka’s Inverness Lodge.
A tasting of local organic food and wine will precede the discussion (6p.m.). Tickets to the food and wine tasting are $50, or $25 for the talk only.
Marin Organic and Manka’s Inverness Lodge are also hosting a dinner with Wendell Berry on Thursday, September 7th. Set in the rustic elegance of the lodge, the dinner for 40 will highlight locally grown, caught and produced foods and wines. Tickets are $250 per plate and include the events for Friday evening as well. Money raised by the dinner will benefit Kentuckians For The Commonwealth and Marin Organic.

Lecture Series featuring the Rohnert Park debut of Haiti: the UNtold Story on Wednesday, September 13 at 8 pm located in SSU’s Student Union MultiPurpose Room. The thought provoking and eye opening documentary will be followed by a question and answer period with journalist and director Kevin Pina and is free to all.
Filmmaker Kevin Pina’s documentary shines a light on what he purports to be the hidden role of the international community in Hatian politics. The provocative and lively film takes the viewer into parts of Haiti where few Western journalists dare to tread and includes shocking footage of unreported human rights abuses. Truly remarkable developments are underway in Venezuela in the areas of literacy, health care, food and nutrition, and land reforms, and all of these are being welcomed by the 80% of Venezuelans who are poor. Come hear about Roger Harris’ visit with the Marin Interfaith Task Force on the Americas’ delegation to Venezuela. Roger's visuals illustrate the group's trips to barrios to observe the implementation of social programs; excursions to rural areas to see the agricultural cooperatives and the effects of land reform; visits with government officials to hear about their “Bolivarian Revolution”; meetings with human rights organizations to learn of their concerns; and experiences at the World Social Forum meeting held in Caracas.

In cooperation with Media Alliance and hosted by Community Media Access Partnership, headed by Suzanne St. John-Crane the 2006 ACM Western Region annual conference will be held in San Jose, California.
Downtown San Jose , the heart of Silicon Valley, is within walking distance of the HP Pavilion, home of the San Jose Sharks, the Tech Museum of Innovation, the Civic Auditorium, the Center for the Performing Arts, Plaza de Cesar Chavez, San Jose State University, and Adobe headquarters.
Downtown is 3 miles/5 minute cab ride from Mineta/San Jose International Airport.
