CounterCorp benefit film screening of 'IRAQ FOR SALE: The War Profiteers'
Director Robert Greenwald's previous film, "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price", showed the effects of 'Godzilla capitalism' on ordinary people across the U.S. and around the world.
This time, "IRAQ FOR SALE: The War Profiteers" tells the story of what happens to ordinary Americans — and Iraqis — when corporations go to war. The film takes viewers inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows, and children who have been changed forever as a result of corporate profiteering in post-invasion Iraq.
The film uncovers the connections between a small group of private U.S. companies, and the decisionmakers who have enabled them to make billions of dollars in Iraq through no-bid contracts to perform jobs that the military used to do itself — and that Iraqis, who are desperate for income to feed their families, could do better, faster, and cheaper.
Though the privatization of the Pentagon is hardly a new phenomenon, the sheer extent and brazenness of the profiteering in Iraq — and the total lack of oversight on these well-connected American corporations — have resulted in the deaths of U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians; alienated most of the Iraqi population; and turned Iraq into a recruitment and training center for Muslim militants, and a full-blown sectarian civil war that threatens the stability of the whole region.
Among the fraud and abuse documented in the film:
-- Halliburton executives living in five-star hotels, while their company fails to deliver drinkable water to U.S. troops; burning perfectly good cars and trucks so they can buy new ones, and claiming to have “lost” $9 billion in cash.
-- Blackwater, a private mercenary army masquerading as a “security company” and operates with near-total impunity in Iraq, cut corners in order to make even more money, and ended up causing the deaths of four of its own employees in Faluja.
-- CACI and Titan, two corporations virtually unknown in the United States, provided untrained guards and nearly useless translators who ultimately brought about the humiliation, torture, and international disgrace known as the Abu Ghraib scandal.
The film will be followed by a panel discussion, and preceded by a demonstration at the headquarters of war profiteer Bechtel Corporation at 50 Beale Street in San Francisco (Embarcadero BART) from 4:00-6:00 p.m. The protest will be led by Global Exchange/CodePINK and other members of the Declaration of Peace coalition.
Tickets are $10, and are available online at http://www.countercorp.org or at the door starting at 7:00 p.m. There will also be refreshments available for purchase at the theater (cash only). Proceeds benefit the 2006 CounterCorp Anti-Corporate Film Festival in November.

His recently launched 'Architecture 2030' www.architecture2030.org <http://www.aiasf.org/%20http:/www.architecture2030.org> draws a connection between building design and global warming, with research indicating that building design and construction could have a greater effect on reversing global warming than any other industry sector. Considering this research, the AIA Board of Directors released a policy statement calling for a 50% reduction in use of fossil fuels for buildings in four years, with additional reductions leading to eventual carbon-neutrality by 2030. Mazria will present his vision for how to meet these goals.

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 3 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.
Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.
LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for our next FireDrums gathering. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!
Things to bring: Your highest self, fire toys, drums, fuel, fire safety equipment, whatever you need to be happy in the woods, camping gear, tent, food, drinking water, friends & family, flashlight, sun screen, bathing suit, layers for varying temperatures, love & good vibes.
Things not to bring: alcohol, dogs, bad vibes.

the fascists in power. This is being organized bz WorldCantWait I think Cascadians should
get involved.... this group involves people like Gore Vidal... their idea is to stimulate the
begining of a Colour Revolution like in the Ukraine with its Orange Revolution. I think this is
a means to get the idea of an Evergreen Revolution in the collective thoughts of
Cascadians ... so after the coming November election fraud and mostlikely WorldCantWaits
failure for a full "nationwide" revolution then Cascadians might keep these tools and ideas in
mind for our Evergreen Revolution (using the ideas from the book "From Dictatorship to
Democracy" www.hermanos.org/nonviolence/dictodem.html)

?We're in a situation today that demands a lot of people in this country. We have to create a political situation like that in 1969 where 5,000 people went to jail rather than serve in Vietnam...I was contemplating releasing documents, which could have carried a sentence of 115 years. Was that too much to take on? I'd been to Vietnam. In combat it's very common for people to risk their lives and their bodies for a lie. Bravery in a bad cause is not uncommon, and often we see it on both sides. Often both sides are bad causes.
What we need at home of course is people who will change their lives, risk their careers and their jobs and their relationships with their families and their bosses and their church groups by taking a stronger stand than most people were ready to take; by saying truths that most people were not ready to hear. Without that courage things like this can't be changed. With it, they may still not be changed, they may fail, but without it, and without mass mobilization there is no chance.? Read more

OCTOBER 5-6 ALL NIGHT LONG: 'CAMP WAKE THE FOLK UP!' will continue non-stop as a large diverse crowd vigils all night listening to testimony by victims of the Bush Regime, and by those in resistance against it - and their speakers, poetry, songs - broadcast and podcast from the vigil grounds round-the-clock. People are invited from everywhere to come to join this encampment whatever the hour. As the night unfolds, people will talk, debate, and work together on visions and plans for driving out the Bush Regime and reversing the whole direction it has been taking the country and the world.

Join the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council for it's first-ever "Ridge Trail Cruz" on Saturday, October 7, 2006.
Hikers may choose to go on a 13-mile hike, or up to 26 miles. A bus will shuttle hikers south to a Santa Clara County Park or MROSD’s Saratoga Gap so they can hike north on the return. There are five mountain bike options in MROSD preserves for participants. Outings suitable for children are also available, and equestrians are welcome. Rest stops, water, snacks, a detailed map, and outing leaders are provided, plus bus transportation for hikers. The fee is $30.
Attendance is limited to 80 hikers and 50 cyclists, plus family groups.
Start time depends on the event. By joining the optional CruzAthon, participants can raise funds through pledges and receive special gifts. Event proceeds will benefit the Bay Area Ridge Trail Council’s efforts to complete the proposed 500-mile trail.

enthusiasts of all types. So far, 300 miles of trail have been dedicated for use by Bay Area residents, now
and forever.
The Bay Area Ridge Trail Council is the nonprofit organization that plans, acquires, builds, maintains,
and promotes the Ridge Trail.
