9/26: SF Film Best Documentary: Israeli Palestinian Conflict - LAST SHOWING!

The winner award for Best Documentary (SF FILM FESTIVAL) and the Jerusalem Film Festival, ENCOUNTER POINT is playing ONE LAST TIME here in the bay area.

View the Trailer: http://www.encounterpoint.com/trailer/index.php

synopsis;
A former Israeli settler, a Palestinian ex-prisoner, a bereaved Israeli mother and a wounded Palestinian bereaved brother risk their lives and public standing to promote a nonviolent end to the conflict. Their journeys lead them to the unlikeliest places to confront hatred within their communities. The film explores what drives them and thousands of other like-minded civilians to overcome anger and grief to work for grassroots solutions. And why is it, with the world’s cameras focused on this conflict, we have never heard about them? It is a film about the everyday leaders in our midst.

It's playing TUESDAY SEPT 26th 4:30pm & 7:30pm At the
GRAND LAKE THEATER 3200 GRAND AVE. OAKLAND, CA
(tickets are cash only at the door!) Go, go, go, go go!

ScrapHouse: A Free Eco Film Night September 27, 2006 07:00 PM - 09:30 PM

Green Planet Films presents: ScrapHouse: A Free Eco Film Night Wed, Sep 27, 7:00pm-9:30pm, San Francisco MORE INFO: http://greenplanetfilms.org/information.php?info_id=71 The ScrapHouse takes "green" design to the next level as Architects, Structural Engineers and Scrap Artists construct a new house in 30 days with junkyard materials. A National Geographic September premiere, the idea of ScrapHouse was conceived by San Francisco's Emmy award-winning documentary filmmaker, Anna Fitch. The premise: is it possible to build and furnish a new house out of garbage in just four weeks? And not just any house, but one that is sturdy, spacious and stylish? A team of architects, structural engineers and scrap artists in San Francisco accepts a nearly impossible challenge: in only one month, turn a few tons of trash into an architectural marvel. Along the way, the team must fight to overcome extraordinary problems: on-site confusion, staffing shortages, a lack of materials, internal bickering and that ominous completion deadline. But failure is ultimately not an option. The team devises a very ambitious and bold design - a spacious modern house of 1,000 square feet with 21-foot-high ceilings. Socializing and gallery viewing at Varnish's beer, wine and saki bar at 7:00pm, film at 8pm. See www.greenplanetfilms.org for more film night details. Free. MORE INFO: Website: http://greenplanetfilms.org/information.php?info_id=71 Email: events@greenplanetfilms.org Phone: 415 383 0484 About Green Planet Films: Green Planet Films is a non-profit distributor of nature and environmental DVDs from around the globe. CounterCorp benefit film screening of 'IRAQ FOR SALE: The War Profiteers'

Director Robert Greenwald's previous film, "Wal-Mart: The High Cost of Low Price", showed the effects of 'Godzilla capitalism' on ordinary people across the U.S. and around the world.

This time, "IRAQ FOR SALE: The War Profiteers" tells the story of what happens to ordinary Americans — and Iraqis — when corporations go to war. The film takes viewers inside the lives of soldiers, truck drivers, widows, and children who have been changed forever as a result of corporate profiteering in post-invasion Iraq.

The film uncovers the connections between a small group of private U.S. companies, and the decisionmakers who have enabled them to make billions of dollars in Iraq through no-bid contracts to perform jobs that the military used to do itself — and that Iraqis, who are desperate for income to feed their families, could do better, faster, and cheaper.

Though the privatization of the Pentagon is hardly a new phenomenon, the sheer extent and brazenness of the profiteering in Iraq — and the total lack of oversight on these well-connected American corporations — have resulted in the deaths of U.S. soldiers and Iraqi civilians; alienated most of the Iraqi population; and turned Iraq into a recruitment and training center for Muslim militants, and a full-blown sectarian civil war that threatens the stability of the whole region.

Among the fraud and abuse documented in the film:
-- Halliburton executives living in five-star hotels, while their company fails to deliver drinkable water to U.S. troops; burning perfectly good cars and trucks so they can buy new ones, and claiming to have “lost” $9 billion in cash.
-- Blackwater, a private mercenary army masquerading as a “security company” and operates with near-total impunity in Iraq, cut corners in order to make even more money, and ended up causing the deaths of four of its own employees in Faluja.
-- CACI and Titan, two corporations virtually unknown in the United States, provided untrained guards and nearly useless translators who ultimately brought about the humiliation, torture, and international disgrace known as the Abu Ghraib scandal.

The film will be followed by a panel discussion, and preceded by a demonstration at the headquarters of war profiteer Bechtel Corporation at 50 Beale Street in San Francisco (Embarcadero BART) from 4:00-6:00 p.m. The protest will be led by Global Exchange/CodePINK and other members of the Declaration of Peace coalition.

Tickets are $10, and are available online at http://www.countercorp.org or at the door starting at 7:00 p.m. There will also be refreshments available for purchase at the theater (cash only). Proceeds benefit the 2006 CounterCorp Anti-Corporate Film Festival in November.

# How Architects Can Reverse Global Warming (2 HSWs)
Sep 28 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm AIA San Francisco 130 Sutter Street, Suite 600
Ed Mazria, AIA, believes architects must become leaders in the fight against global warming. His recently launched 'Architecture 2030' www.architecture2030.org <http://www.aiasf.org/%20http:/www.architecture2030.org> draws a connection between building design and global warming, with research indicating that building design and construction could have a greater effect on reversing global warming than any other industry sector. Considering this research, the AIA Board of Directors released a policy statement calling for a 50% reduction in use of fossil fuels for buildings in four years, with additional reductions leading to eventual carbon-neutrality by 2030. Mazria will present his vision for how to meet these goals.

FireDrums IV
Thursday, September 28th - Sunday, October 1st, 2006

FireDrums is about bringing the global Fire Arts and Drumming Communities together to share knowledge and to propel these burgeoning Art Forms forward. The past 3 FireDrums were blessed with some of the most epic Fire and Drumming Jams of all time with participation from some of the world's most amazing Fire Dancers and Drummers. Truly inspirational!

FireDrums will always be open to everyone at any skill level even if you've never lit-up. Whether you're learning, teaching, sharing, inspiring, or being inspired, we welcome anyone interested in being part of the abundance of advancement that occurs when a convergence of this magnitude transpires. We look forward to revisiting old friendships and creating new ones with those who love the beat of the drums and the warmth and glow of the flame.

Everyone was a beginner at some point in their development and you can often learn just as much from teaching as you can from being taught. There will be organized and impromptu interactive workshops in the various disciplines of the Fire and Flow Arts and Drumming throughout the gathering.

LOCATION: We've secured the beautiful Cutters Scout Reservation exclusively for our next FireDrums gathering. Cutter Scout Reservation is a full-service camping facility located in the coastal mountains of California above Santa Cruz. This breath-taking 300 acre camp ground is located 25 miles from Santa Cruz and 67 miles from San Francisco. Cutter is about 2,200 feet in elevation and it's in some of the last old-growth redwoods on the West Coast. There is a full-size swimming pool, a small lake with canoes, hiking trails, bathrooms & showers with running water, bbq's, and so much more!

Things to bring: Your highest self, fire toys, drums, fuel, fire safety equipment, whatever you need to be happy in the woods, camping gear, tent, food, drinking water, friends & family, flashlight, sun screen, bathing suit, layers for varying temperatures, love & good vibes.

Things not to bring: alcohol, dogs, bad vibes.

As always, this is a LEAVE NO TRACE gathering!

Please car pool as there is very limited parking!

These 2 previous topics are VERY IMPORTANT POINTS!

This is a scout camp located within a beautiful national forest and it's our 1st gathering at this location. It's imperative that we show absolute respect for their beautiful land or we will not be invited back again. We have conveyed to Cutters how wonderful and respectful everyone has been at our past 3 gatherings and that FireDrums is not a rave or party scene.

Total capacity is strictly capped at 600 attendants by the Cutter Ranger!

Advanced Purchase Tickets: $40
*Only the 1st 450 pre-sold tickets are available at this price*
*The last 150 advanced tickets will be $50*

On-Sight (Gate) Tickets: $50
*Only available if FireDrums doesn't sell-out from Advanced Purchase Tickets*

To purchase tickets and for more info, please go to www.firedrums.org

Ticket price includes entrance to the gathering, use of all of the features listed above, up to 72 hours of camping, swimming, and lots of fun! By securing the reservation for our exclusive use, we can now put the funds received towards making this an even better experience for everyone at a lower individual cost than past FireDrums gatherings.

# OCTOBER 5: There is a way! There is a day!
http://worldcantwait.net/

Well as some of you might know (maybe all) there is a plan for a "nationwide" protest against
the fascists in power. This is being organized bz WorldCantWait I think Cascadians should
get involved.... this group involves people like Gore Vidal... their idea is to stimulate the
begining of a Colour Revolution like in the Ukraine with its Orange Revolution. I think this is
a means to get the idea of an Evergreen Revolution in the collective thoughts of
Cascadians ... so after the coming November election fraud and mostlikely WorldCantWaits

WORLD CAN'T WAIT

Oct 5 the world can't wait.org
?We're in a situation today that demands a lot of people in this country. We have to create a political situation like that in 1969 where 5,000 people went to jail rather than serve in Vietnam...I was contemplating releasing documents, which could have carried a sentence of 115 years. Was that too much to take on? I'd been to Vietnam. In combat it's very common for people to risk their lives and their bodies for a lie. Bravery in a bad cause is not uncommon, and often we see it on both sides. Often both sides are bad causes.

What we need at home of course is people who will change their lives, risk their careers and their jobs and their relationships with their families and their bosses and their church groups by taking a stronger stand than most people were ready to take; by saying truths that most people were not ready to hear. Without that courage things like this can't be changed. With it, they may still not be changed, they may fail, but without it, and without mass mobilization there is no chance.? Read more
This is our moment to act. Momentum is gathering. At worldcantwait.org you can read why Gore Vidal, Ralph Nader, and others are supporting protest on October 5. Recent ads in The New York Times, Chicago Reader, SF Bay Guardian, LA Weekly, and DC?s City Paper, and the first weeks on Air America Radio which you helped place have attracted many thousands. Last Thursday more than 1300 people met in 50 cities and towns to make plans for October 5th.
Spread the word. Spread this message. Send all you can today.

As the night unfolds, people will talk, debate, and work together on visions and plans for driving out the Bush Regime and reversing the whole direction it has been taking the country and the world.

OCTOBER 6 FRIDAY 8AM: Press Conference and Rally. Greet the new day with a morning rally, reporting on the historic events of the past 24 hours around the country -- and plans for upcoming days as this mass movement looks ahead to its next steps to drive out the Bush Regime.
