Our lineup of panelists includes esteemed Marin County attorney Carl Shapiro, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Kevin Murphy, Victoria B. Henley, Director & Chief Counsel of the State of California Commission on Judicial Performance (CJP), Cesar Lagleva, the Chairman of the Marin Human Rights Commission, family law attorney Barbara Kauffman and civil litigator Claudia Brisson. Independent audit findings: Inappropriate judicial behavior, perceived judicial bias favoring friends or social acquaintances, records mismanagement, inadequate staffing and organizational inefficiencies. Our courts have been the subject of complaints, stories, headlines, inquiries and audits (both internal and external) for many years. We think there needs to be greater communication and collaboration between the Courts and the Marin community. We'd like to know what's being done to improve our Courts and how the community can offer support.

Marin Ranked Voting
JOIN ASSEMBLY CANDIDATE JARED HUFFMAN
FOR A DISCUSSION OF RANKED VOTING
Jared Huffman, Democratic Party candidate for State Assembly from the 6th district, will meet with Marin Ranked Voting activists on September 27 to learn more about our strategy for promoting ranked voting in local elections. The meeting will include a brief demonstration of ranked voting and a question-and-answer period.
Marin Ranked Voting works to make local government more representative by promoting better methods of choosing public officials in which voters can rank candidates in order of preference. When voters can rank the candidates, election results more accurately reflect the views of the entire community. Ranked voting also increases voter turnout, reduces negative campaigning and--in many situations--saves money.
Republican Party candidate Michael Hartnett and Libertarian Party candidate Richard Olmstead attended our August 23 meeting. Both endorsed ranked voting and joined our list of supporters. Green Party candidate Cat Woods has been an active supporter from the beginning.
Our monthly meeting will be held at the STAFF LOUNGE OF THE Student Services Building on the College of Marin campus in Kentfield on Wednesday, September 27, at 7:00pm. Everyone interested in better ways of choosing public officials is encouraged to drop by.

On 9/28 join local activists for meetings with Senator Feinstein, Senator Boxer, and House Minority Leader Pelosi to demand an end to torture.
Meet Thursday, September 28, 8:30am at Senator Feinstein's office (Montgomery & Market)
We are arranging appointments with both senators and House Minority Leader Pelosi, and we'll start with our visit to Senator Feinstein when her office opens at 9am.
We'll be wearing orange jumpsuits and bearing a very large gift: an orange-ribbon-wrapped cage to represent the reprehensible torture and indefinite detention that our legislators have enabled or failed to prevent over the past five years, at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba, Abu Ghraib in Iraq, Bagram AFB in Afghanistan, and in secret prisons and other torture-sites all over the world.
Since it's pretty unlikely we'll be allowed to deliver a large cage in Sen. Feinstein's building, we plan to carry it around the city -- to Pelosi's and Boxer's offices -- looking for an elected official who will take responsibility for the government's heinous activities.
We'll have about a dozen jump suits on-hand (or bring your own!), and will also have orange t-shirts with demands (and our URL) printed on them for folks to wear (and, optionally, to buy).

Exit 101at the Tiburon exit then go about 3-4 miles along Tiburon Blvd. At the San Rafael Avenue stoplight, turn right. When the water on your right ends, take the second right onto Golden Gate Avenue. Drive up to the second stop sign, which is a 5-way intersection. Take the soft right onto Belvedere Avenue. About 1/2 mile, the road will widen and on the right you will see a row of matching mail boxes beside a gray/white garage. A hairpin right takes you onto Cliff Road.

Panelists include Reverend Jeanne Sutter, Unity In Marin Prayer Ministry; Ken Smokoska, Chair of the California Sierra Club's Energy-Climate Committee; and John Schlag, Vice President of Sustainable Marin.

FREE PIZZA AND SALAD FOR FIRST 200 PEOPLE

Join the SMART campaign team at our Grassroots Kick-Off and Rally for SMART on Tuesday, October 3rd from 6:30 - 8:30 PM at the Coleman Elementary School in San Rafael. The first 200 SMART supporters at the event will receive a free slice of pizza and salad.
The evening will include live music, and a rally with Congresswoman Lynn Woolsey, Supervisor Charles McGlashan, and Jared Huffman. Optional training sessions will be offered so that you can feel even more comfortable talking with your friends, neighbors and family about SMART, and why we need the SMART rail-with-trail as a transportation alternative. There will be an opportunity to sign-up to do phone banking, precinct walking, and tabling for the campaign.
The event will be held at the Coleman Elementary School at 800 Belle Avenue in San Rafael, starting at 6:30 PM. Redwood Landfill Expansion
Hearing on Final Environmental Impact Report
on the Redwood Landfill by Marin County Planning Commission. Room 328, Marin Civic Center, 3501 Civic Center Dr. This hearing is the next rallying point to oppose expansion of the Redwood Landfill (just north of Novato in our northeastern wetlands). It will be extremely important for members of the Novato community to attend in support of the local coalition that is battling Goliath, i.e., Waste Management Inc. Please note that this date is tentative, and that this hearing has already been rescheduled several times. Next month's Awareness Newsletter will have an update on the hearing and the date. No Wetlands Landfill Expansion is a concerned citizen's watchdog group created to review Redwood Landfill's proposed expansion in Novato, along the Petaluma marsh. This expansion is of critical concern for residents of Marin and Sonoma counties and environmentalists throughout the Bay Area. It will negatively impact the environment and surrounding communities. Citizen input and support is essential during the environmental review and permit process. Expansion of the landfill will turn it into a state regional dump to increase Waste Management, Inc.'s big corporate profits. It will result in a substantial increase of large truck traffic on highway 101 and increase the risk of degrading surrounding wetlands as well as air and odor pollution throughout Novato and surrounding areas.
