----- A neurologist says that if he can get to a stroke victim within 3
hours he can totally reverse the effects of a stroke...totally. He said the
trick was getting a stroke recognized, diagnosed and getting to the patient
within 3 hours which is tough.
RECOGNIZING A STROKE
Thank God for the sense to remember the "3" steps. Read and Learn!
Sometimes symptoms of a stroke are difficult to identify.
Unfortunately, the lack of awareness spells disaster. The stroke victim may
suffer brain damage when people nearby fail to recognize the symptoms of a
stroke.
Now doctors say a bystander can recognize a stroke by asking three simple
questions:
1. *Ask the individual to SMILE.
2. *Ask him or her to RAISE BOTH ARMS.
3. *Ask the person to SPEAK A SIMPLE SENTENCE (Coherently) (i.e. . . It is
sunny out today) If he or she has trouble with any of these tasks, call
9-1-1 immediately and describe the symptoms to the dispatcher.
After discovering that a group of non-medical volunteers could identify
facial weakness, arm weakness and speech problems, researchers urged the
general public to learn the three questions. They presented their
conclusions at the American Stroke Association's annual meeting last
February. Widespread use of this test could result in prompt diagnosis and
treatment of the stroke and prevent brain damage.

Hydrogen is a clean-burning fuel, but using it as an environmentally
friendly energy source requires finding clean ways to produce it.
One of the most promising approaches is solar water-splitting,
a scheme to use sunlight to drive the chemical separation of hydrogen
and oxygen from water.
The catalyst is the key to splitting water into oxygen and hydrogen. Much recent research has focused on titanium dioxide catalysts, and last year researchers found that nanotubes made of titanium dioxide are more effective than bulk titanium dioxide. The catch is pure titanium dioxide only works with ultraviolet light, which makes up only a small portion of sunlight. (See Nanotubes crank out hydrogen, TRN, February 9/16, 2005) Researchers from the University of Texas at Austin have found a way to add carbon to the titanium dioxide nanotubes in order to shift their catalytic activity from ultraviolet to visible light. They also found that the length of the nanotubes plays a key role; 3.3 microns is optimum. The carbon-infused titanium dioxide nanotubes generated more hydrogen from sunlight than pure titanium dioxide nanotubes.

In an attempt to rollout a Citywide Wireless Internet plan (TechConnect) two major approaches being considered by San Francisco significantly encroach on the public's privacy. While Supervisors and City Administrators pat themselves on the back for what the voters approved (2004) in a watch law ordinance that makes Patriot Act requests difficult for the Federal government, a privatized solution for any wireless internet usage will finance the solution by monetizing the public's privacy.
Two major funding mechanisms vendors are suggesting for the current TechConnect RFP (secret bids due 2/21) are targeted advertising and Homeland Security funding. The targeted advertising solution (google and others) would track all the email and surfing habits of any user. This information could be used as in Gmail and Amazon to send specific advertising. It is of course also available for National Security Letters and other legal methods which would not be presented within the legal context of San Francisco - avoiding the Watch Law. While there are questions about Privacy in the RFP, they were specifically written as Open Ended rather than Minimal Standards. Public Advocates and Organizations like ACLU, EFF.org and EPIC.org have all written and some have spoken about their concerns with this approach Before the RFP was created and released - no changes were made. Also DTIS has the ability to waive any RFP requirements in the contract negotiation process anyhow.

Overcoming Barriers to 9/11 Truth - Those familiar with the information
presented in part one know that a lack of evidence is not the limiting
factor in spreading 9/11 truth. Many people don't want to believe scary
stuff like that revealed by the reality of such things as stolen
elections and the truth of 9/11. This talk will look at the
psychological resistances to such truths, so we can better overcome
them. This talk will be shorter to allow more discussion time about
examples each of us have of the types of resistance we have encountered
in ourselves and others.
Part Three - February 8th, 7 - 10 pm
9/11 in Context: The Big Picture. Using the 9/11 truth issue as a
touchstone, this discussion will look at the nature of the overall
changes we are going through that include other such unsettling
realities as the stolen elections, lies leading to war in Iraq, and the
response by our government to Katrina. By seeing these in the context
of a global awakening that we are all a part of, we can be more
effective working on the specific issues that have the most leverage to
facilitate this evolutionary process and thus create a better world.
Ken Jenkins has been a 9/11 truth activist for over four years. He was
a speaker at both the San Francisco and Toronto 9/11 Inquiries and has
produced numerous 9/11 DVD's. He is an award winning video and media
producer with an education in engineering, psychology and metaphysics.
He brings a multifaceted and balanced approach to the 9/11

How can an open society balance demands for security with democracy?
"State of Fear" dramatizes the human and societal costs a democracy
faces when it embarks on a war against terror, a war potentially
without end, all too easily exploited by unscrupulous leaders seeking
personal political gain. The film follows events in Peru, yet it
serves as a cautionary tale for a nation like the United States.
Filmmakers Pamela Yates, Paco de On and Peter Kinoy masterfully blend
personal testimony, history and archival footage to tell the story of
escalating violence in the Andean nation and how fear of terrorism
was used to undermine the democracy, making Peru a virtual
dictatorship where official corruption replaced the rule of law.
Attacks by the Shining Path guerrillas provoked a military occupation
of the countryside. Military justice replaced civil authority,
widespread abuses by the Peruvian Army went unpunished, and the
terrorism continued to spread. Nearly 70,000 civilians eventually
died at the hands of the Shining Path and the Peruvian military.

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith 2005
Written and directed (in a manner of speaking) by George Lucas
Of the three most recently produced Star Wars films, "Sith" is the least objectionable. Its storyline is not completely ridiculous, and the darkness of the subject matter restores some measure of balance to the series, which is equal parts saccharine and treacle. Beautifully designed and rendered, "Sith" is further hyperstimulus for a generation of borderline autistic Nintendo babies. However, no amount of hard work and aesthetic vision on the part of the film's many designers and artisans can possibly compensate for cliched dialog and truly Gawd-awful performances. Lucas has an uncanny knack for bringing out the absolute worst an actor can muster. Respected actors Samuel L. Jackson and Ewan McGregor appear visibly embarrassed to deliver such cheesy lines, while lesser talents such as Natalie Portman and Hayden Christensen can do little but founder as a result of Lucas's astonishing lack of direction. At a worldwide gross box office take of $800 million, "Sith" is the most profitable B-movie ever made.

On Friday, January 20, 2005, Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi hosts the monthly
Third Friday’s Art Reception in his City Hall office, Room 282. This
month’s featured artist is Andy Diaz Hope.
Andy Diaz Hope, a Bay Area native, questions the stereotypes and cliches
circulated by popular media. By refabricating the form in which we sustain
our self-image and protect ourselves from our image as an enemy, Diaz Hope
wants to draw our attention to the threads with which our very social
fabric is bound and fashioned. Often funny and always telling, his work
permits candid interactions to deconstruct our stereotypes, prejudices and
preconceived notions, be they conscious or not.
Diaz Hope has shown his work in the MoMA permanent collection, the Museum
of Contemporary Art Denver, the National Gallery of Victoria in Australia,
and the London Crafts Counsil, as well as in numerous shows throughout the

Join us at the Cell Space January 20th for an outrageous line up of DJ's donating their talents to raise money and awareness for the antiracist, grassroots movement taking root in New Orleans! Many of us just returned on the Oxygen Collective bus from an intensive three week trip doing relief work in New Orleans. We will share some of our images and stories from our experience, and will donate 100% of the proceeds to the dedicated people at the Common Ground Collective working for justice on the Gulf Coast.
Common Ground Collective formed in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, to provide immediate aid and long-term solidarity along the Gulf Coast. Common Ground is a local, community-run organization offering mutual aid and support to New Orleans communities that have been historically neglected and underserved. Common Ground's teams of volunteers include: medical and health providers, aid workers, community organizers, legal representatives and people from all over with broad skills from all walks of life.
100% of the proceeds will go directly to the needs of residents in New Orleans. The funds will fuel the need for environmental clean up, providing safety equipment for volunteers and residents alike. Money will also go to a school that's starting up in one of the most impoverished areas in New Orleans, an area still void of any school for children. Common Ground oversees these, and other projects, all directly benefiting the residents. Volunteers leave their jobs, their homes, and comfort for weeks on end, anything that we can offer to assist in their safety is a great service. Offering $20 to the cause is a small way to effect positive change in an area in great need.

Intended for experienced movers, with a regular (but not necessarily advanced)
dance, yoga, or movement practice.
The cost: $155/ weekend for food, indoor camping, and facilities, but not
including instruction. For that, participants will make donations
there to the teachers for the classes you attend, and managed
centrally/anonymously with one check if you wish ($10-25 per class
suggested). Everyone also helps with one meal. A couple of spots
are available for those not able to afford much in
donations: you can help by coordinating a meal (shopping & bringing
the food up), setup/strike or otherwise volunteering (contact us for deets).
Limited to the first 20 people to sign up.
Fee allows use of all the harbin facilities (hot warm and cold pools,
hiking, movies, yoga, kirtan ... see harbin.org) from noon on Friday
until 9pm on Sunday. Indoor camping will be relatively spacious: for
the 20 of us we'll have two private rooms, three large tents set up,
at least one van, and two large floor areas in the lodge, so everyone
should be able to sleep early/late/when they want and be relatively
undisturbed, and we won't be cramped in like sardines although a
cuddle pile may form :-)

week of the event.

Rightwing fundamentalists have announced their second
annual “Walk for Life” anti-abortion march in San
Francisco on the anniversary of the historic Roe v.
Wade decision. Repressive government policies have
emboldened our opponents – their platform is
anti-choice, anti-birth control, anti-equality, and
anti-gay-marriage. Pro-choice advocates are
organizing to remind the anti-abortionists that San
Francisco is a reproductive rights town. Join
community activists – from the Women’s Choice Clinic
to the Raging Grannies – and help line the anti-choice
march route in a grassroots, multi-issue reaffirmation
of a woman’s right to control her body. On Saturday,
January 21, assemble at 11:00am, Pier #1, Embarcadero
and Market Streets in San Francisco.
We must join together to show the rightwing that we

Wade, acknowledge the women today who cannot access safe and affordable reproductive health services because of restrictive policies in their state, and to share our intentions and hope for the future - when reproductive freedom is recognized as a fundamental human right for all. Clergy members will share how their faith brought them to be pro-choice and discuss clergy involvement in the reproductive freedom movement pre-Roe and today.

"Whore College" is a series of educational and entertaining evenings by long time sex worker, activist, artist and dean of whores, Carol Leigh AKA Scarlot Harlot. 1. Sex Worker Political Art from Around the Globe- Saturday, January 21st
Introduced by Annie Sprinkle Ph.D., prostitute/porn star turned performance artist/sexologist. Her autobiography, Post Porn Modernist (Cleis Press) is a cult classic and her last book, Hardcore from the Heart: The Pleasures, Profits and Politics of Sex in Performance, won the Firecracker Alternative Book Award (2002). Her brand new book, "Dr. Sprinkle's Spectacular -- Makeover Your Love Life" (Penguin/Tarcher) is her first mainstream how-to self-help book.
Scarlot introduces her series with her slide show about sex worker culture from around the world featuring a report about her recent participation at the European Sex Workers Conference in Brussels in October. This show has screened internationally and at colleges in the US and presents a unique view.
2- "Sex-Mart Expose and Ho' Theater" Sunday, January 22nd
Carol Queen introduces the evening, performing segments from Peep Show. We go behind the scenes at the pre-union Lusty Lady Theatre with Queen, who worked there as Minx Manx in 1990! In her solo spoken word piece Peep Show she introduces you to her colleagues in tall boots and blonde wigs and to a few of her most notable customers as she found her calling (and her exhibitionistic self) in the Private Pleasures booth, where anyone could come to Talk To A Live Nude Girl!
Carol Queen is the author of "Exhibitionism for the Shy," "Real Live Nude Girl," and "The Leather Daddy and the Femme" and the co/editor of seven other books. She's been in several sex ed videos, including Bend Over Boyfriend, and is both the director of the Center for Sex & Culture and the staff sexologist at Good Vibrations.
Leigh performs pieces from her book, Unrepentant Whore and screens videos of sex worker performances, focusing on self-representation.
3- "The Truth About Trafficking and Other Stories" January 28th
Robyn Few of SWOP and Scarlot Harlot combine talents and passions as they educate you about recent trends in anti-prostitution legislation.
This evening of song, film and politics features Robyn Few, Director of Sex Workers' Outreach Project. Filmmaker Few will screen her recent documentary about decrminalization in New Zealand and discuss SWOP's recent efforts in their campaign to decriminalize prostitution. Leigh and Few also launch their musical debut in "Puttanesca."
Leigh's Power Point show "The Truth About Trafficking" presents a sex worker rights perspective on the current discourses about trafficking. Providing little known gossip and facts about how mainstream feminists (even Gloria Steinem!) sold out the sex workers tracing the current anti-trafficking framework to the 19th century white slavery movement.
Few and Scarlot will talk about recent legislation and policies which target all commercial sex from porn to prostitution and could have an effect on San Francisco's economy and the welfare of our city's residents. Due to the flurry of emails asking for an intermediate class, I have decided to set one up! I usually only teach intermediate once every two or three months, so if you are interested now is the time to jump in... Two intensive Sunday seminars from 12-2pm. This INTERMEDIATE LEVEL class provides a total of 4 hours of training. Designed for those who want to master more complex moves, create supple transitions and cultivate the awareness of a performer. All students who enroll must already have mastered all skills from beginner class. First meeting focuses on torso and arms. Second meeting focuses on off body moves including advanced jumps, spins, body rolls, tosses. These seminars take moves you already know and has you perform them on many other dimensions and angles. More challenging moves and tricks also provided. Emphasis is on creating more flow in transitions, integrating dance with your complex moves. will speak about post-Katrina organizing in New Orleans and among displaced
survivors of Katrina in the Bay Area and elsewhere.
CC CAMPBELL-ROCK is Editor at the SF Bay View. She is a native New
Orleanian and earned a bachelor’s degree in mass communications from Loyola University of the South. A veteran journalist, she has been the managing editor of three New Orleans-based newspapers and associate editor of a national magazine, and she has penned several hundred articles. Prior to her mandatory evacuation from New Orleans, Campbell-Rock produced and co-hosted “Speak Now or Forever Hold Your Peace,” a live weekly public opinion cable broadcast, for four years. She currently resides in Pleasanton, Calif, and has been organizing with Katrina evacuees in the Bay Area.
JORDAN FLAHERTY is a writer and organizer based in New Orleans, and is part of the editorial collective of Left Turn Magazine. He was in New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit the city, and has been writing and organizing in New Orleans since then, working with grassroots organizations for justice, human rights and the right of return. Flaherty's articles from the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina have appeared in publications around the world, including Die Zeit in Germany, Clarin in Argentina and Juventude Rebelde in Cuba, and on hundreds of websites including ZNet, CommonDreams, AlterNet and CounterPunch. Three recently produced documentaries will acquaint viewers with Venezuela's remarkable developments in literacy, health care, food and nutrition programs, and land reform.
Showing at 6:45 PM will be "Chavez, Venezuela and the New Latin America." This is the exclusive February 2004 interview with Hugo Chavez conducted by Aleida Guevara, daughter of Che Guevara, and includes information about the blockade of information imposed by the US.
At 8:00 PM will be "With the Poor of the Earth." The profound social and economic changes taking place in Venezuela come to life, with emphasis on the participation of Venezuela's millions of poor in the revolutionary process.

• Operational Expense: A media center must have enough income to keep running. This can be provided by a viewer choice fee (less than $1 a month) on cable bills.

Overcoming Barriers to 9/11 Truth - Those familiar with the information
presented in part one know that a lack of evidence is not the limiting
factor in spreading 9/11 truth. Many people don't want to believe scary
stuff like that revealed by the reality of such things as stolen
elections and the truth of 9/11. This talk will look at the
psychological resistances to such truths, so we can better overcome
them. This talk will be shorter to allow more discussion time about
examples each of us have of the types of resistance we have encountered
in ourselves and others.
Part Three - February 8th, 7 - 10 pm
9/11 in Context: The Big Picture. Using the 9/11 truth issue as a
touchstone, this discussion will look at the nature of the overall
changes we are going through that include other such unsettling
realities as the stolen elections, lies leading to war in Iraq, and the
response by our government to Katrina. By seeing these in the context
of a global awakening that we are all a part of, we can be more
effective working on the specific issues that have the most leverage to
facilitate this evolutionary process and thus create a better world.
Ken Jenkins has been a 9/11 truth activist for over four years. He was
a speaker at both the San Francisco and Toronto 9/11 Inquiries and has
produced numerous 9/11 DVD's. He is an award winning video and media
producer with an education in engineering, psychology and metaphysics.
He brings a multifaceted and balanced approach to the 9/11
investigation.
Ken is currently producing a series of DVD's of illustrated lectures by
David Ray Griffin, noted author of the books The New Pearl Harbor and
Omission and Distortions in the 9/11 Commission Report.

solely on the physical aspects of menopause misses the stunningly powerful and often disorienting changes we are undergoing in all

with sexuality as well. With so much profound restructuring all happening at once we can certainly feel lost on rough vast seas. But we are not alone -- by the year 2010 there will be 50 million women experiencing some phase of menopause. That much upheaval will shake up the whole culture, and just in time.

This is a wonderful opportunity to start the New Year by sharing compassionate and cruelty-free foods with like-minded folks. Everyone is welcome, both veg and non-veg people, members and non-members. In fact, we encourage non-veg folks to attend so they can see the variety of wonderful vegan foods available.
Our Vegan Food Parties are potluck-style, meaning each person should bring a vegan dish that provides six generous servings (or if there are two of you, one dish that serves 12, and so forth), a serving utensil, ingredient list, and your own place setting and beverage.
Please share a homemade vegan dish with us -- it could be your favorite dish when you were a new veg*n, the one to you always serve to non-veg friends, or simply one you enjoy making. We also welcome folks to "animal test" new vegan recipes -- you'll find many willing volunteers to try new vegan foods at our VFPs.

"Food as Advocacy" with Alex Bury
Leafleting, tabling, and protesting are great forms of advocacy to help animals and promote vegetarianism, but a great veg*n dish can speak volumes towards promoting veg*n foods. Alex Bury will share strategies and tips useful towards creating veg*n dishes that are particularly appealing to your non-veg family and friends, as well as aspiring veg*ns. She will demonstrate - live and in person! - how easy it is to create this type of dish.
Alex Bury is a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America, where she learned all about cooking meat. Now she is a vegan chef (formerly of Sparks restaurant in Guerneville), a full-time PETA staffer, and a chef instructor for the McDougall program.
This presentation is geared towards new or aspiring vegetarians as well as those wishing to use delicious food to promote vegetarianism.

This film is a video version of Eric Hufschmid's book, Painful
Questions. It provides an in-depth analysis of the Twin Towers'
sctructure based on a scientific approach as well as careful
observation and simple common sense. Eric was the first person to
bring the mysterious collapse of Building 7 to the attention of the
public. Building 7 was a 47-story building near the Twin Towers that
disintegrated into dust in 7 seconds a few hours after the Towers
fell. Eric points out that the same demolition crew was hired to
clean up the rubble of the World Trade Center and the rubble of the
Oklahoma City bombing -- another cover up and inside job. Eric takes
a very close look at the Pentagon crash and points out a number of
obvious facts that make the official story fall apart.

dancing (yes, Dick dances), speeches (Dubya, much to Dick's
consternation, has decided to write his own) and a raucous press

Barbara Bush is so encouraged by her son's derring-do that she is
flying out to assist him.
Ed Holmes, a navy veteran and San Francisco Mime Troupe member for
nineteen years, instigated the annual St. Stupid's Day Parade, now in
its 27th year. Amos Glick, a San Francisco Mime Troupe member since
1997, represented the troupe on the Lollapalooza '95 Tour doing
political sketch comedy and guerrilla theater. Masters of political
satire, they honed their impersonations of Dick 'n Dubya during the
Mime Troupe's outdoor shows. Bill Allard (director) is a founding
member of Duck's Breath Mystery Theater. In 2004, he directed Merle
Kessler and Raoul Brody in BROKE at The Marsh, San Francisco.

A reminder...the first Tree Walk will be January 14 from 10 am - 12 pm.
In 2006, Canopy will be celebrating our 10th Anniversary. As part of the yearlong celebration, Canopy volunteer arborists will be leading a Tree Walk every month. Each Tree Walk will focus on a different area in Palo Alto. The leading arborist will cover the trees in each neighborhood and answer participants' questions. The Tree Walks will be held on the second Saturday of each month from 10 am – 12 pm. See the schedule below for locations. Named one of the world's top ten parades, Chinese New Year Parade in San Francisco is the largest celebration of its kind outside of Asia. Over 100 units will participate in the parade, many of the floats and specialty units will feature the theme of this year's Chinese zodiac sign. Nowhere in the world will you see a lunar new year parade with more gorgeous floats, elaborate costumes, ferocious lions, and exploding firecrackers. Board of Supervisors' Chambers at Marin Civic Center. Lynn Woolsey will preside, Sen. Sheila Kuehl has been invited, and we hope to have numerous other legislators present. The object is to tell them what's wrong with our health-care system and to demand a system that works. There will be many people testifying. These hearings are being held around the country with the support of Rep. John Conyers; it's all part of building an irresistible groundswell for a single-payer system.
This is all part of building the mass movement that we will require before we can hope that a single-payer system will pass. There are too many monied interests opposed to expect that mere good will and good sense could overthrow the disastrous system we have today. Like civil rights, like the anti-tobacco movement, we must first have a sea change in public thinking.

February 2006 event will unite thousands of People demanding Justice and Peace!

Overview
This 14th edition of the Digital Be-In combines its lineage of invention and cultural evolution marking the dawn of the digital age with the emerging green economy and sustainable culture movement. Producer Michael Gosney (whose Verbum magazine began the Digital Be-In during the late 1980s) developed the Paradox conferences on sustainable communities at Arcosanti, Arizona in 1997, 1999 and 2001 http://www.greencenturyinstitute.org/paradox.htm and formed the Green Century Institute in San Francisco in 2002. Planetwork, founded in San Francisco by Jim Fournier and Elizabeth Thompson in 1998, fosters the creative application of digital tools for positive global change through a series of conferences and monthly forums in major cities. The Green Century Institute and Planetwork are working with several San Francisco Bay Area groups that were involved in the seminal World Environment Day week in San Francisco June 5–11, 2005 http://www.wed2005.org in the development of this combination daytime symposium, evening rally/celebration and late night dance party. As in the past, the Digital Be-In will reach beyond the physical event with a live netcast, information-intense website and new kinds of exposure and interaction via social networks and blogs. The unanimous Declaration of the thirteen united States of America,
When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation.
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. --That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness. He has refused his Assent to Laws, the most wholesome and necessary for the public good.
He has forbidden his Governors to pass Laws of immediate and pressing importance, unless suspended in their operation till his Assent should be obtained; and when so suspended, he has utterly neglected to attend to them.
He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only.
He has called together legislative bodies at places unusual, uncomfortable, and distant from the depository of their public Records, for the sole purpose of fatiguing them into compliance with his measures.
He has dissolved Representative Houses repeatedly, for opposing with manly firmness his invasions on the rights of the people.
He has refused for a long time, after such dissolutions, to cause others to be elected; whereby the Legislative powers, incapable of Annihilation, have returned to the People at large for their exercise; the State remaining in the mean time exposed to all the dangers of invasion from without, and convulsions within.

He is at this time transporting large Armies of foreign Mercenaries to compleat the works of death, desolation and tyranny, already begun with circumstances of Cruelty and perfidy scarcely paralleled in the most barbarous ages, and totally unworthy the Head of a civilized nation.
He has constrained our fellow Citizens taken Captive on the high Seas to bear Arms against their Country, to become the executioners of their friends and Brethren, or to fall themselves by their Hands.
He has excited domestic insurrections amongst us, and has endeavoured to bring on the inhabitants of our frontiers, the merciless Indian Savages, whose known rule of warfare, is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes and conditions.
In every stage of these Oppressions We have Petitioned for Redress in the most humble terms: Our repeated Petitions have been answered only by repeated injury. A Prince whose character is thus marked by every act which may define a Tyrant, is unfit to be the ruler of a free people.
Nor have We been wanting in attentions to our British brethren. We have warned them from time to time of attempts by their legislature to extend an unwarrantable jurisdiction over us. We have reminded them of the circumstances of our emigration and settlement here. We have appealed to their native justice and magnanimity, and we have conjured them by the ties of our common kindred to disavow these usurpations, which, would inevitably interrupt our connections and correspondence. They too have been deaf to the voice of justice and of consanguinity. We must, therefore, acquiesce in the necessity, which denounces our Separation, and hold them, as we hold the rest of mankind, Enemies in War, in Peace Friends.
We, therefore, the Representatives of the united States of America, in General Congress, Assembled, appealing to the Supreme Judge of the world for the rectitude of our intentions, do, in the Name, and by the Authority of the good People of these Colonies, solemnly publish and declare, That these United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States; that they are Absolved from all Allegiance to the British Crown, and that all political connection between them and the State of Great Britain, is and ought to be totally dissolved; and that as Free and Independent States, they have full Power to levy War, conclude Peace, contract Alliances, establish Commerce, and to do all other Acts and Things which Independent States may of right do. And for the support of this Declaration, with a firm reliance on the protection of divine Providence, we mutually pledge to each other our Lives, our Fortunes and our sacred Honor.
