[ctrl] FBI Files Posted Online ctrl-subscribe@yahoogroups.com to receive more like this Hi everyone:
Just wanted to let you know that the first portion of my collection of FBI files (along with supplementary material) is now available online on the Internet Archive website, here:
http://archive.org/details/lazarfoia
All of the remaining individual pdf files should be online within the next 2 weeks. As you can see, there also are links to zip files containing the entire content of each DVD. And in the near future, the annotations which I included on my Alpha List of Subjects will also be posted online.
Couple things you might like to know:
1. Some of the FBI files in my collection probably have been posted online previously by other parties. However, my files often contain many fewer redactions because I provided the FBI with extensive death record info on persons connected to the subjects of my requests.
2. I originally requested and received many of these files as paper documents in the 1980's and 1990's. About 6 years ago I started requesting them again but I asked that they be released to me on CDROM's so that I could ultimately donate them to interested universities and organizations. Unfortunately, in many cases, I discovered that FBI files were destroyed or they were transferred to NARA.
If (like me) you are interested in saving the enormous portion of our history which is archived within FBI files, I encourage you to make FOIA requests on whatever subjects interest you -- if only to delay the time when the FBI plans to destroy files or transfer files to NARA. Once they are at NARA, they become inaccessible to most researchers because NARA charges 75 cents per page (!) for photocopies and, (last time I asked), NARA does not offer the option of obtaining files on CDROM as does the FBI.
I hope my collection of files proves useful for all students and researchers!
