New Science Smorgasbord: Viruses, Stars, Brains, & Shapes Four short talks presented by four Wonderfest Science Envoys:
1) "Viruses: Ancestors or Aliens?" Lauren Popov, Stanford
Biologists can’t agree if viruses are truly “living” entities. So if viruses aren’t alive, then how did they evolve and where did they come from? Together we will explore the mainstream hypotheses about the origins of viruses and marvel at the diversity of the ever-expanding viral family tree.
2) "Star Formation Through Radio Eyes" Chat Hull, UC Berkeley
How do stars form? And how do magnetic fields affect the star formation process? I focus on both of those questions in my research, which involves using radio telescopes to observe the dense blobs of dust and gas where stars like our sun are just beginning to form.
3) "How to Grow a Primate Brain, and Why You Should" Drew Halley, UC Berkeley
Primate brains (including yours) have some remarkable differences from those of other mammalian species. This talk will look at what’s different about primate brains, how development produces these differences, and why evolution selected them.
4) "What Is The Best Shape?" Otis Chodosh, Stanford
The best shape?! A question for the ages! What do geometers and physicists mean by “best”? And which shape is the winner?

East Bay Bike Party is a monthly mobile party for riders of all ages, experience levels, and types to meet, ride, and play together in the streets. Rides are 12-16 miles long with 2 stops at public spaces along the route. Rides move at a slow pace and volunteers assure everyone makes the correct turns. Riders express their creativity through the ride’s theme. Music is a big part of the EBBP experience along the route and at the party stops where dancing is common. Each ride is a unique, once in a lifetime experience right here in your own backyard.

A word from a ninja: Pirates are loud, undisciplined, disease infested, dirty, mangy, crude and rude. It is impossible to think they would ever be better at killing than me or any of my ninja breatheren. I dare any amount of Pirates to attack me so that I may silently kill you and whisper away into the night to meditate on your death.
A word from a pirate: Arrrrrgh you kidding me? Silently kill me? discipline? arrrgh... cleanliness? you m'igh think you are better at killing and we'll debate that over mead any ole day, but we both know, Pirates are better at living! Arrrrgh, we do pilliage and rob and drink and drunk and i dont bathe unless i trip and fall into the water, and what a life to live!
