Pay attention folks. If you understand 'intel', then this is a missing piece of the puzzle. A fairly important one! This IS NOT describing Capitalism, as envisioned by the founders. Seems that pure Capitalism is only surving in the small business world, and they're being SQUEEZED to the sidelines! Sure there is the opportunity for ordinary people to 'invest', and I had a pretty good run through the eighties at that, but while skill & savy helps, the big guys have the 'fix in', and when they move, they do it to take the largest number of nominal businesses out of the game, and the smaller ones are the most volatile so that's where the LUCK comes in. If they went up, & you're quick on your feet, you can still turn a profit as a small investor, but the deck is definitely stacked, perhaps not as well as Vegas, but they're working on that too!
Warren Buffett graduated from Columbia University and learned 'Value Investing' from Benjamin Graham. He started an investment pool in Omaha in the mid fifties, and I spoke to several who had the opportunity, but lacked the means, to enter the pool. $10000 was the minimum stake, which was pretty close to the beginner morgtage in that market. After only a few years, he closed the pool, and the stakeholders were handsomely rewarded, but he stated that the rules had changed.
From that point forward he invested for himself, and eventually got control of Berkshire Hathaway. He seemed to have learned the new rules pretty well, or perhaps at that point, he was invited to join the club that eventually led to his alliance with Bill Gates. This was the point of this entire post. If you're 'not in the club', and you put most of your eggs into the equity basket, you will eventually be burned. Not saying don't invest, but learn the basics, and set limits for risk, and stick to them. Diversity is important, but even that can be wiped in a steep decline. THE DECK IS STACKED! Yes, gamblers sometimes win, but for every winner, there are multiple losers, and almost none of them are 'club members'
